how in the world could you have left off lorenzo brown. not even honorable mention. you are so incompetent.

Ladies and Gentlemen, the AJC presents your all-Gwinnett County first team! (With a bone thrown to Wheeler because they got to the finals) How can they seriously pawn this off as an “all-state team”? No Lorenzo Brown in AAAAA? Anywhere on the list? That one is hard to figure. He had better numbers and is more highly rated as a prospect than most of the guys on there. He couldn’t get consideration over lesser players in his region I guess because he doesn’t have the same name as a famous NBA player. Grab the darts, AJC prep staff. It’s time to pick an All-State team!

One more note about Lorenzo Brown, just to drive it home. He was voted the 6-AAAAA player of the year by his opposing region coaches over both of the guys from Wheeler and ahead of Royal and Sampson and Rice. And he’s not even an honorable mention here. Brilliant!

Big time gaffe and there is absolutely ZERO excuses for leaving Lorenzo Brown off. I’m baffled…

It looks like the ajc posted a GA stars AAAAA state team along with their up and coming star, Kenny (who?) to be pushed this summer and next year. The celtics had to have one player represented in AAAAA, thus enters Ebuka. Daquan did make it to the state championship. Kenny Hall only won 14 games this year and lost in the first round of the playoffs. Go figure.

Editors note for AAAAA still a joke Lorenzo brown has to be 1st team. Ask anyone in the state and they will agree. Mahoney you have to do better than that. Honorable mention what games where you watching this year. I thought you kept up with Georgia basketball. Wasn’t he the Norhtside player of the year as well as Region 6-AAAAA player of the year. The easiest thing to do is to ask all of the coaches he faced and they will tell you he needs to be on the 1st team. U-N-B-E-L-I-E-V-A-B-L-E is all I can say

If Farouq was player of the year before he got arrested you cannot just take him off because he did. What he did on the basketball court has nothing to do with that incident. AND Lorenzo not being first team is a joke. He should’ve been in discussion for player of the year

By Reggie

Lorenzo Brown being listed as honorable mention is even a bigger joke. How are you ranked 17 on scout but not ranked in the top ten in your class. That’s abtruse.

i’m sorry but even after Lorenzo Brown was added to honorable mention that is still unbelievable. He won Northside POY and put up better numbers all year. Like Reggie said, scout has him as the

4 PG in the country and rivals has him at #8

the only PG in GA higher than him in rankings is Mfon Udofia That is ridiculous

By oracle

I guess politics will continue to override merit. Ralph Sampson III averaged 20 ppg, 10.5 rpg, 7 blocks per game. He recorded 7 triple doubles and led the state in blocked shots. There was no other player more meaningful to his team. He averaged more points per game than two players on the first team. Are these awards based on high school season or AAU reputation? Facts are facts. It is truly a disservice to kids to base these awards on hype and political agendas and not facts.

actually knights0705 Trae Golden is higher ranked at his position than Brown…and to oracle, the writers picked the best players, not the best stats, with the exception of forgetting about brown…i watched sampson play several times, for someone that is 6’11 he is nowhere near the offensive force he could or should be..so what if he blocks 7 shots, hes 6’11 and most of the kids he plays against are probably about 9 inches shorter than him, he should block shots…Sampson plays timid and needs severe work on his offensive skills outside of dunking putbacks…brown, golden, jones, howell, aminu, witherspoon are all far better players then Ralph, darius garrett from McEachern is another big man with athleticism i’d take over ralph any day…please dont try to make excuses and blame the AJC for being “political” and having an agenda..

By oracle

How does one determine the best player? Most basketball purists use stats, ability to make team better, and how far does a team make it toward the championship. You do the math. Your statements are entirely subjective, irrational and ludicrous. Why don’t these other tall players block as many shots? According to you, they are suppose to, but I guess they don’t want to.

Kevin Murphy not 1st, 2nd, or honorable mention or nothing what the hell 26ppg and 8rpg

By Actually

March 29, 2008 7:17 PM | Link to this

So oracle using your logic then that only stats matter, I guess the best players in college basketball include names like Lester Hudson, Charron Fisher, Jaycee Carroll, Bo McCalebb…these guys are all in the top 10 in scoring, so I guess they are first team all americans and lottery picks for the up coming draft…my opinions are far from irrational, I watched a ton of HS bball the last 2 months of the year, which included northview games in the regular season and region tournaments…I’m entitled to think what I want of a player, just as AJC voters are entitled to think and vote however they want…I guess we are all wrong about King Ralph, accept our apologies as we missed the boat on the best player in GA. He blocks 7 shots a game watchout

By oracle

March 29, 2008 9:12 PM | Link to this

Your apologies are accepted. I’m glad that you acknowledge that the player with the best stats and takes his team further in state playoffs should be considered first.Anything else if pure speculation and conjecture. You can’t average 20 points per game and shoot 60% from field and not be an offensive force. Estremely versatile with good mid range jumper, three point range, jump hook, can create own offense off dribble, and finishes effectively at the rim.

By Slim

I saw Sampson play several times over the past two years. “Offensive force” is hardly the phrase I would use to describe him. “Taller than everyone else” is a better description. Clearly he has some skill, but he’ll get pushed around pretty good in the Big 10, and he won’t sniff double figures without some serious offensive improvement. He did have a good year and his team went further in the tournament than anyone else in their region besides Wheeler. So there’s something to be said for that. If I were starting a team, though, I’d take Lorenzo Brown or Dequan Jones or a lot of other guys before I’d take Sampson.

By oracle

25 points and 22 points versus Centennial, 22 and 14 against Wheeler this year, and 23 and 18 points against wheeler last year. That looks like offense to me. Why put Sampson down unjustly because you like other players . He outscored some of theplayers considered ahead of him. What does that say about their offense?

Cashmere Wright is a 4 star point guard out of Savannah Urban Christian. He is ranked as the 11th best point guard nationally (Rivals)but not good enough to make your list? I think you missed out on this deserving player.

Please Georgia keep your eye on the young man from Tucker High School Manny Atkins. He reminds me of Stephen Curry from Davidson. No one talks about Manny but he is going led some one to the big dance.

Thanks for all your responses to the all-state team. If you have ever had the opportunity to be a part of an all-state or all-star team selection, you know it’s a very difficult task. When you have a state like Georgia that has abundance of talent, the job is even more challenging. There were over 10,000 boys and girls that were of a high school basketball team this past season and the AJC all-state team honored 250 of them with the distinction of being named to the all-state team. Hopefully the players are honored at making the all-state team with making it on whether it was on the first, second or honorable mention team. Coaches were mailed forms in February to nominate players from their team. From those nominee forms and the recommendation of other writers, the teams were compiled. Not all the players selected played in the final four, but there was a large part. Some of the players’ team didn’t make it out the first round or even make the playoffs. When you first start, you look at the last teams standing because obviously they have a combination of good players and coaches, and you pretty much go from there. I know not everyboyd’s favorite player made it, but feel that the teams are representative of the high talent level in Georgia.

That kid Mohamed Tarawally is the truth. He is a little small, but brings alot to the game with his natural ability. Look for him to do great things either here or overseas in the years to come.

No disrespect to any of the 4A allstate players but the list must be based off of the publicity the players had prior to the season or the nation wide hype they have. I can honestly say that Judson Dillard from Mt. Zion high school had a outstanding junior season and his stats do exceed some of the other players stats that made 1st team allstate. I was upset because he didnt even 2nd team let alone a honorable mention. My boy is good. Check him out!

It is a travesty that Jamail Jones is not on the Class A list anywhere!!! Not even honorable mention? That’s ridiculous! He was a 18 and 10 kid with a triple double this past year. 18, 10 and 7 to be exact. He’s only a 10th grader!! Must be personal somewhere, this is the biggest slight of the ENTIRE all-state team in any class

Jameal Jones should have made the Class A list not even listed as an honorable mention. If you missed him in 2007/2008, you definitely won’t miss him in 2008/2009. He will be on the top of the world.
