10 killer state tourney brackets

The brackets are set, and the state tournament kicks off in a couple of days. We’ve been sitting around at Take Ten headquarters since Sunday studying these things like it’s March Madness in February.

What we notice every year, besides the fascinating matchups and the potential for big games down the road, is that some teams have it tougher than others. Some of them deserve that fate, and others sort of stumbled into it. But the nature of the bracket is that the best teams aren’t going to be evenly distributed, and some spots are going to make for difficult roads to the high school version of the Final Four.

So here are our top 10 toughest quadrants of the bracket in the boys and girls tournaments. For purposes of this list, think of the top left as No. 1, bottom left as No. 2, top right as No. 3 and bottom right as No. 4.

10. Boys AAA No. 1
Defending champ Jordan is No. 1 in the state, and the Red Jackets could have a huge second-round game with Region 3-AAA champ Glenn Hills, the No. 4 team that hasn’t lost to an in-state team this season. In the top half, you’ve got No. 5 Central Macon traveling to Northside-Columbus and a Dougherty team that took out No. 6 Westover to win the Region 1-AAA title.

9. Boys AAAAA No. 1
There are only two top-10 teams in this quadrant, but it’s a very strong grouping. No. 3 M.L. King may be the least known team in the state that’s ranked that highly, and the Lions have to travel for a tough game at Hiram. If they get by that, they should get Region 3-AAAAA champ Johnson-Savannah, which has the players to make a run at the Final Four. And No. 10 Coffee lurks on the other side with two solid teams, Stephenson and Newnan.

8. Girls AAA No. 3
No. 1 Hephzibah suffered its first in-state loss Saturday, but the Rebels are capable of winning state. But they likely will have to get through a second-round date with No. 4 Southwest-Macon, which eliminated Hephzibah last season. The winner could get No. 3 Kendrick, which came within one point of the state final last season.

7. Girls A No. 1
The top three teams in the state reside here, and the second round could look exactly like last season. No. 1 Terrell County has a potential second-round rematch with Treutlen, which ended the Greenwaves’ season last year. On the bottom half, No. 2 Savannah Country Day and No. 3 Taylor County could be bound for a rematch of their own, this time on the Hornets’ home court.

6. Boys A No. 4
Defending champ and No. 3 Wilkinson County barreled through this bracket last season but should have a tougher time. The Warriors’ reward for winning Region 7-A was to get No. 9 Eagles’ Landing Christian in the first round, with No. 10 Athens Academy possibly awaiting in the second. No. 6 Southwest Atlanta Christian is in the top half, looking to give Wilkinson one more tough one before making it to Macon.

5. Girls AA No. 4
No. 1 Wesleyan made it to the final last year, but the Wolves will have to work hard to get back there again. If they can get by Fannin County in the first round, they could have to travel to No. 9 Model in the second, while No. 6 Rutland and No. 10 Buford battle it out in the top part of the bracket, if they can get through their own difficult first-round matchups.

4. Boys AAAA No. 2
It’s proves how deep Region 6-AAAA is that defending champ and No. 4 Tucker is the No. 4 seed from the region. That leaves fans with a surprising first-round matchup between Tucker and No. 6 Dacula. Next to them in the bracket sits No. 9 Lithia Springs. On the bottom half is No. 7 Miller Grove, the Region 6-AAAA champs, and a well-coached Cherokee team.

3. Boys AAAAA No. 4
No. 2 Norcross vs. No. 8 Harrison is one of the most intriguing first-round games in any class, while a rematch of last year’s state final could come in the second round, if Norcross and No. 6 Centennial make it there. Another familiar matchup could come in the third round, where No. 5 Marietta lost to Norcross last season.

2. Girls AAAA No. 4
This is the only quadrant with five top-10 teams, and those aren’t the only quality teams there. No. 2 Marist will have to go on the road to make it back to the state final, first traveling to No. 10 Madison County before likely going to No. 9 Cherokee in the second round. On the bottom half, No. 7 Rome plays No. 6 Hillgrove, the first-year team that has had an excellent season. Also, Mays, which nearly won a very difficult Region 6-AAAA, hosts Salem, which has one of the best players in the state - Courtney Hurt.

1. Boys AAAA No. 4
Clarke Central made a nice run to get the runner-up spot in Region 8-AAAA, but playing No. 2 Columbia can’t be what the Gladiators had in mind. The winner of that game could get to travel to No. 5 Pebblebrook, a team that deserves much more attention that it has gotten. On the bottom side is No. 3 Rome, which hasn’t lost to an in-state opponent since early December, and No. 10 Stone Mountain, which proved its toughness in an upset of Columbia during the region tournament.

Go on. Take Ten. Who do you think has the toughest road in the playoffs? What’s the deepest side of the bracket? For that matter, what’s the weakest?

Hey devil lover, non-ranked opponents does not mean down for the count. I believe that McEachern has the ability to beat any ranked team on any given knight. Stephenson is also a worthy opponent. I know for a fact that Johnson of Savannah, should be ranked and mathces well with Wheeler. I strongly believe that Wheeler, if caught not playing defense liked someone said on another blog, will loose against Johnson-Sav. I do not believe Wheeler has it as easy as most would think.

Devil Lover, you can gripe all you want about brackets but if you don’t take them one at a time, you’ll end up using the crying towel. Wheeler, Norcross, Jordan, Columbia—-teams like that have a target on their back every time they take the court. Their opponent is going to bring everything, including the kitchen sink, to try to knock off the premier team(s). With the upsets that have already occurred, you should be well aware of that, including a few ranked teams that didn’t even qualify for state. I agree with cross%over; just because a team isn’t ranked doesn’t mean they aren’t a quality team and it darn sure doesn’t mean they can’t beat the ranked team. That’s why they play the games and not just annoint the highest seed as the champion.

One of my fondest sports memories is still the Villanova win over mighty Georgetown in the ‘85 championship game.

Good luck to all the participants in this year’s tourneys in all brackets. Well earned and well deserved!!

Jordan does have a tough bracket but this is a team with many seniors with experience. We put ourself in the position we are in by losing one game all year at the wrong time. I don’t think too many people want to face a 3 seed that has a 26-1 record. We are not looking ahead to Glen Hills though because we have to worry about Perry first. They are 20-6 and deserve respect. I fully expect to win though because I know how good this team is when they are motivated. They really want to go back to back. If we win this year we will certainly earn it. We may have to play Glenn Hills who haven’t lost in state yet then possibly South Atlanta and Dunwoody back to back. We will be putting our running shoes on so I hope the rest of the state is prepared. Go Red Jackets!!!!

Mia-

I’d say Dunwoody is in one of the easiest brackets. They’re the only top-10 team in that quadrant, and they’re probably one of the top 5 teams overall teams in the state. I’d guess the biggest competition from them there would be Flowery Branch. Coach Cottrell has a very nice team up there. They’ve only lost 3 games, and they beat a really tough East Hall team two out of three times this year. If a new top 10 came out right now, they might very well be in it. That could be a fun game to watch in the quarters at Mt. Zion if it happens.

There is no crying in basketball. if your team is stacked then don’t worry about it. Play ball. It’s the playoffs and you have to play. Now I don’t agree with singleton named an all american. Aminu, yes the right choice.(What the **&&!!!! singleton) What about Howard, Jones from Wheeler, or Williams, the kid from Meadowcreek. Please he’s not the top player in Georgia. He’s not disicpline, no hustle, and a coach killer. Who did the voting. I rather put Graham on than him. Well, enough hating…… Prove me wrong.

Do not count out Osborne Girls in Region 5AAAA. Remember they came in 2nd in Region, where as Hillgrove, who had gone 19 games without a loss, placed 4th in the region.

Norcross is the class of high school basketball. Just ask why your team locally has never been on ESPN? Norcross High School has been on 3 times. Look for Norcross to win it all “again” this year. Apparently Norcross whose average margin of victory is 38 points , must be a VERY good team ! In fact the best this side of the Mississippi !

I truly believe Savannah High is going to beat Norcross in the state tourney. Norcross and Wheeler fans better stop judging teams they no nothing about, so much. Listen, please, please, stop putting yourselves in the championship game already. There’s alot of basketball to play.

All it takes is one bad or off night. I smell a defeat out there, somewhere.

Jeff, how does one qualify for the McDonald’s game anyway? Do they compete for a spot on the court, or is it by a voting? If Im correct, Singleton wasn’t even able to carry his team to the second round of the playoffs two consecutive years despite playing home. Guess playing on the eventual champs home floor in the next round scared the $^%! out of him. On the brackets though, this is ths GHSA playoffs baby, aint nothing gravy.

Who said parents don’t matter. That is where most kids learn their morals and values. We all know that Norcross, Dunwoody, and Wheeler, just to name a few, illegally recruit and enable kids to play for their schools when they really legally shouldn’t be there. Parents a big part of this illegal process, not to mention these I don’t know why but “well-respected” coaches. Sad that the tradition of coaching what you originally have in your area is gone. Don’t allow move-ins and only then and only then could we know how good these coaches really are. This is not college. Recruiting is not supposed to be a part of the equation. Give Eddie Martin or Doug Lipscomb the talent of Duluth and let’s see how good of a coach he is. They’d resign to avoid embarrassment.

Hey Bill. Good players like good students will gravitate to good sports programs and good schools. If you want to have a good sports program, first recruit a good coach and support the program. Georgia needs more good positive sports programs and good positive schools. What we don’t need are negative people like you accusing others just because you are a negative person. Bill try and have a great day.

By David

Yeah, seriously Bill, you’re an idiot. Just because Dunwoody, Norcross, and Wheeler are the 3 best teams in the state, you should’t speculate that they cheat, just because they probably would beat your team by 30. Its ok that your team sucks, just move on and let the big dogs play.

February 20, 2008 11:09 PM | Link to this

Bill it sounds like you’re a fan of a team that had a good player transfer to one of those schools you mentioned…AS stated previously, good players will always be more interested in playing for a good program….they are playing for college scholarships, and whats the best way to get exposure? play for a team that plays a national schedule and gets a great deal of attention…who are you to judge these kids and their families for doing whats in their own best interest? if their best chance to get noticed and have a chance at getting a scholarship is transferring to another school, then so be it…if they move into the district, which I’m sure most do, whats the problem?

Most of you are probably too young to remember, but Coach Lipscomb inherited a Wheeler basketball program that was a BIG JOKE. In the mid ’90s, Wheeler was a football school and basketball was pathetic. He took the talent that was there (no one was going out of their way to attend Wheeler for basketball) and turned it into a winner. This included coaching-up Shareef Abdul Rahim, who was already living in the district. Great coaching created success, and success has created a draw for great players who want to experience HS basketball at the highest level and be coached by the best. Know of what you speak, Bill.

Bill and Coach hit it right on the head. whether bball fans want to admit it or not, those teams (Norcross, Dunwoody, and the likes) recruit players. PERIOD. just look at the roster. How many of their players have been there for all four years and came from feeder middle schools…NONE. As a coach myself, Im not HATING on these programs or coaches. I choose to run a legitimate program and my school community appreciates that. Now we’re not playing on ESPN or anything, but my players are competative and earning college scholarships and thats the point….Isn’t it?

im sorry but i get tired of reading all these posts from people that have nothing to do with a program acting like they kno what really goes on. I was a part of the norcross program back in 06 when we one the first state championship and i can promise to you that there is no “illegal” business going on. All those transfers a legit and done the right way y do u think jordan and al-farouq sat and played jv a year. Coach Martin doesnt neet to recruit to get good players he has proven himself as an amazing coach long before the transfers rolled in and i would have my kids play for him any day! he is nothing but class. He knows the game he studies his opponents and he works those kids hard. I dont care what ur ranked nationally if ur lazy ur not playing for coach martin. Not only is he a good coach but hes a good teacher not in the class room but in life. he teaches those players to have class be good sportsmen and to achieve academic standards. So all yall that want to hate on norcross, dunwoody, and wheeler y dont yall stop passing judgments on things because u herd from someone else that they cheat and find out for yourself!

Hey you crying coaches, quit crying because other coaches work harder and draw better players. We need to focus on the under performing programs by firing the coaches and recruiting new coaches to improve the existing programs while attracting better players.

It looks to me that these better programs have developed an improved model that needs to be adopted by all schools so that we can continue to raise the performance of our basketball programs. Thanks to these high performance programs Georgia is finally getting the attention that our young basketball talent so desperately deserves. Thank you norcross, wheeler and others for your hard work and dedication. Keep up the good work!

12 I know for a fact is real talented and without him on the team the program would not be what it is today and Singleton his he not the kid from Cherokee that had a lots of problem and coaches could not deal with his A**that was why he transfered if you want the facts just ask.

Hey Metro Coach… I don’t think you understand or maybe you are part of the problem. Which is it? Go to USAToday/High schools and you will see why good players legally transfer to schools and programs like Norcross. Alfarouq Aminu is featured with a full picture. Now, do you really think that if he was struck at your program that he would have this much national exposure or selected as a Mcdonald’s All American? Probably not unless you coach for Wheeler. We need more programs like these.

I know that there is no illegal recruiting in high school basketball. Coaches at Wheeler, Norcross, and Dunwoody built those programs up from little. Its like this: why deny a kid the right to play for better coaches and better staffs so that they can earn a free ride to college and get more exposure. People transfer for academics all the time, so why can’t athletes. If you deny athletes the right to transfer schools then you have to deny brilliant young minds them the right to further their education. Honestly, anybody whose mad about these transfers needs to spend less time on these blogs and more time fixing whatever sucking basketball program they have so that the rest of us don’t have to hear them whine about how unfair it is. How about all you spoil sports go build a basketball program up from scratch and when you do you come find me when some superstar kid wants to transfer to your school and you tell me that you denied him/her the right to transfer to your team. Thats right you wouldn’t deny them. SHUT UP AND GIVE THESE COACHES LIKE DOUG LIPSCOMB AND EDDY MARTIN THEIR CREDIT AND QUIT BEING SORE LOSERS!

Well, It’s good to know people are so enthusiastic about this recruiting biz. And its great to hear all this support for these coaches. First of all I’m not saying anything NEGATIVE about these coaches. I have respect for all these programs we’re talking about. What sets these programs apart is $$$$. Obviously many of you are not in the school system, if you were you would realize that the school districts determine how athletics are funded. Thats the main reason it is so difficult for Atlanta schools to compete at the state level. These county schools have budgets in the $10,000’s and thats just one sport. City schools get $16,000 for ALL sports. And you would think that having a successful season would earn the school more money, but truth is all ticket sales go to the school system not the school. After football theres nothing left! So the fact that Atlanta city teams even make it to the playoffs every year needs to be applauded.

By metro coach has no clue

how can you be so misinformed (i.e. - just play stupid)?

The “County” doesn’t give ANY money to athletics. Every DIME spent is RAISED.

Let’s say he’s not the only coach to contact this kid. So don’t say nothing about being man enough. Why so you can go report it to him and give martin the heads up. lil do boy? All you have to do is check phoe records and the truth will come out. So when U.N. (university of Norcross) is exposed what you going do then!!! Ha HA

By Metro coach

Exactly!!!! I didnt say the county gave anything.. The County ALLOWS the school to raise its own money through booster clubs, community sponser, partnerships etc. Which is great for the schools. The City schools Don’t allow that. So sounds like you need to learn a little.

Back to the main topic - from the coach’s poll on GASports web site, Norcross seems to have the tougher draw. There are 4 of the top 10 teams on their side. The other three have two teams each. The only two games tonight that have teams from the top 10 playing each other are: Wheeler vs Parkview and Norcross vs Harrison with this game being the tougher of the two. Will be interesting to see if there will be an upset. If Norcross wins and Centennial beats Meadowcreek, the two will meet Tuesday night for a rematch of last years final game! I’m glad to say that that game would be played at Norcross! Go Devils!

Eddie Martin has never and WILL never call a student-athlete. That will NEVER happen. Schools like Norcross, Wheeler, and Dunwoody have 10 calls every day from parents wanting to move their children. There is no need for Coach Martin to call anybody ever.

The fact that you can just make up a “fictional” story about him calling some “middle school” kid in some county is pathetic and gives you zero credibility.

I am not george bush, I don’t lie. Do you actually know him and spend every minute with him. I am inside the school system and you can’t imagine the things that coaches do. I was shocked but not surprised. So just like you put your faith in bush. You don’t have to believe, but Dekalb county has some great middle school players. The fact is that you are an idiot for trusting man. Have you seen these middle school kids!!! Watch for them next year. All I am saying coach your own players and if a kids move in your area that’s cool. Don’t pay rent or buy cars for them. Everyone heard about this so it’s no surprise. Put your faith in GOD not man. man will let you down.

I was glad to see that someone recognized that Hiram will be a tough game for M.L. King. Hiram has beaten Mundy’s Mill twice this season, a team ranked higher than M.L. King in the coaches poll. Hiram has a 21-6 record going into today’s game. They also have two players who reached the 1000 point mark this season; while others have been recognized for this by the AJC these two players have not.

It makes you wonder if academics holds any significance for the GHSAA at all. Teams and their fans being forced to travel for hours for a weekday (Tuesday, 2/26). Can’t we move the entire schedule to Friday/Saturday games?

Glenn Hills will beat Jordan in the 2nd round of the playoffs and they will probably go on to win state….the 2 games they lost however was without point guard Reggie Middleton the losses also was to a team from Tennesee and one from South Carolina…….Just my opinion i dont see them losing to a team in the state of georgia this year!!!!!
