Rankings, records mean nothing in regionals

This is the week high school basketball teams around Georgia will try to earn a trip to the state tournament. But not all the teams in the state have to play their way through their respective regional tournaments for a shot at a state title.

The Parkview boys’ and girls’ teams, for example, already have their playoff tickets by virtual of earning the No. 1 seed for this week’s Region 8-AAAAA tournament. The Panthers’ next game is Friday in the region semifinals.

“This is the exciting time of year for all the teams,” Parkview boys’ coach Tim Watkins said. “We are just trying to stay sharp until we play again.”

While the Panthers are lucky enough to have a comfort zone in the tournament, most teams in the state have to win at least two games before earning their playoff berth.

The top four teams from each region advance to the first round of the state playoffs, which begin Feb. 22. A team just needs to advance to it region semi-final round to earn a playoff berth. Some regions reward their regular-season top seed with a placement in the semifinal round. In other regions, everyone has to play their way into the state tournament.

“You got to come with it every night,” Miller Grove junior point guard Mfon Udofia said. “You have to bring your A-game, because someone is always looking for that upset win.”

Miller Grove knows all too well about upsets in the region tournament. Last season, Mays upset the highly-ranked Wolverines in the quarterfinals of the Region 6-AAAAA tournament at home. Miller Grove has a bye in the first round but faces the winner of the Mays vs. Washington game in the quarterfinals, with a trip to the state tournament on the line. Last Friday, Miller Grove beat Mays 58-51 in the regular season final for both teams.

“I don’t want what happen last year to happen again in the region tournament,” Udofia said. “I couldn’t sleep for about a month after that loss. We are real hungry.”

Ranking and records mean nothing at this point in the season. Westlake’s boys team cruised through its Region 2-AAAA schedule with a 16-0 record. The Lions are ranked No.1 with a 22-2 record, but the players said all that is in the past now.

“What you did in the regular season doesn’t matter,” Lions senior guard Gideon Gamble said. “I was a sophomore when we won every game and then lost in the state championship finals.

“If you lose now, your season is over. It is all about who plays the hardest and wants it more.”

Post up: Who do you expect to survive regionals? Which teams could prove to be this season’s biggest surprise spoilers? Let’s talk tourney.

Obviously Norcross guys will survive the regional tournaments and move on to state. Though upset by Peachtree Ridge last year for the number one spot from region 7-AAAAA going into state, Norcross guys will most likely come away with the region 7-AAAAA championship on Saturday. One of the biggest surprises could be Norcross. A win tomorrow night at North Gwinnett would put Norcross into the state tournament for the first time in quite a few years. The Lady Blue Devils are going into the region tournaments with a better then 500 record. They have won 7 of their last 8 regular season games. The only loss coming to Mill Creek, the number one ranked team in the state.

Derrick:

Thanks again for providing this outlet for HS basketball fans. I spoke to a friend the other day that agreed this is a GREAT sport to watch.

That said, I’ve got to give props to not a region but an entire county, DeKalb. We could see multiple champions from different classifications on the boys and girls side. In AAAAA, you’ve got the boys from ML King, Jr, Redan, and Stephenson. The girls from Stephenson have a good shot. In AAAA, you’ve got the boys from Columbia, Marist, Miller Grove, Stone Mountain, and Tucker with legitimate shots. Unfortunately at least one of those teams won’t make it out of the region tournament. My SWD Lady Panthers should win the state but could face either Marist or St. Pius in the finals. In AAA, you’ve got the boys from Dunwoody with a legitimate chance. In A, Greenforest has a chance. Yes, some of the schools mentioned are private schools but they are still in the county. Says a lot about the talented student athletes in DeKalb.

Can any other county match up with this? I think not. Jeff, this may be a good top 10 for you.

This is the time of year where you find out how much learned and accomplished during the regular season. How much of your team is really a team and will play like one? Who will play with confidence and poise? Who will be nervous wrecks? Time will tell. Coaches, are you ready? This time is not just for the players. How well have you done, teaching? Dunwoody team have a chance winning there decision but it will take lots of focus And much more discipline it comes down to who really wants it the most , Dunwoody point guard #12 has proven that he deserve to Be with his team art the finals he is quick and if you blink you may not capture his athleticism and his ability to assist he makes everyone around him look good that is the sign of a true Guard. Delwan and Chris is a force to reckon with and need to focus more on posting up under the basket I enjoy all of them however I along with the other Fans would like to see more defensive plays that are what wins championship. Derrick, So are you putting the rankings out anymore? If you are not, is it because you fear that your opinion of the top schools will be wrong, again, when the “other” schools beat your top ranked teams? Your article sounds like you are setting yourself up to play on the other side of the fence. Holla back if you don’t understand what I’m saying. I’ll explain it to you.

CAN ANYONE TELL ME IF SAVANNAH CAN BEAT WHEELER THIS YEAR LIKE BEACH DID IN THE SEMIS TWO YEARS AGO?

By thesmart1

February 11, 2008 11:08 PM | Link to this

Uhhhh… Excuse me, everyone. I have an important anouncement to make… “no one in the state of Georgia, under any classification, can beat Wheeler High School in basketball… period”!!! Not South Atlanta, not Norcross… No One! Favors would need a twin brother to help, and Aminu would need triplets to help. If you’re a school with 1 or just 2 superstars, you can’t beat Wheeler! They are a total team with at least 5 potential D1 athletes. You’d have to be a team at least 10 deep of “ballers” to even come close. Guess what… there’s no such team in Georgia, and very few, if any, in the country. I wish they would let each classification have their championship, and then have a TRUE championship by having the winners of each classification play each other for a true winner… that would be Wheeler hands down! By the way, if you’re one of those teams that THINK you have the ballers to beat Wheeler, they better be Seniors. Because if you’re an underclassman(i.e. junior or less)(i.e. D Favors, etc) Dequan Jones will NOT let it happen. A TRUE Senior and leader (i.e. Dequan Jones), doesn’t LET their team lose to underclassmen. Aminu, you’re a Senior… just too bad that Norcross isn’t nearly deep enough to beat Wheeler. Good Luck to all, and let the games begin…

Just like Wheeler beat Norcross the last two years. Let’s do a little stat comparing. While Wheeler is only scoring an average 3 points more per game then Norcross, the Blue Devils are holding their opponents to an average of 43 points while Wheeler is allowing 63 points per game. Schedule breakdown shall we. Norcross played a few more national teams then Wheeler. These national opponents included a win over New Jersey’s number 5 ranked team, a win over one of the tallest teams in the nation (which I believe Wheeler brags that they are so good because of their height), and rematch with perennial power Oak Hill Academy, which ended in a very close 3 point loss for Norcross. Oh I almost forgot about Norcross’ win, on ESPN2, against Helen Cox, who features one of the top forwards in the nation. I will admit that it will be a great matchup in the state if and when these two teams meet. Just be careful with absolute comments like nobody can beat Wheeler. Just ask Meadowcreek what happened the last two years at State when they played Norcross with that attitude.

Both of you are correct regarding Adam. He is a quality young man and it’s not hard to see why. Give me a little latitude by mentioning another paper in this blog. I opened up my USA Today this morning (2/12) and saw a familiar face in the cover story of the Sports section. Maya Moore of Connecticut by way of Collins Hill. It’s a GREAT article and I encourage all bball fans to read it. You can find it at: USA Today Maya Moore article

Yes, we’ve had 3 young men from GA drafted as #1 picks in the NBA draft. She very well my start a trend for young ladies being #1 picks in the WNBA draft.

BTW, I saw Kelly Cain’s father last week. He said she is doing well after season ending knee surgery thus is taking a redshirt this year. He expects she’ll be ready to play for UT next season pain free.

It’s good to hear that our local girls are doing well at the next level also!

Derrick, This is my point. You say rankings go out the window during playoffs. If that s the case, why due any ranking at all. Makes me think that you don’t believe them yourself. If you are going to rank teams during the regular season, then continue during the playoffs also. what would happen if say a Norcross or wheeler team lost to a unranked team in playoffs? Would you still rank them in your end of year rankings? Would that go out the window too? Just don’t know why wait until end of the year to rank teams

To all you Johnson people. I attend Jenkins High in Savannah and Johnson is NOT the big dogs in Savannah as you like to think. It’s Savannah High. Savannah High has beaten Johnson and everyone else in Savannah twice so give them the credit be fair and stop being haters. Be fair. Savannah High’s record is 23-1.

Butta:

Please correct me if I’m wrong but isn’t that done in NCAA basketball also? You have end of the regular season rankings then rank teams after the playoffs end. I still recall when Villanova wore slippers to the big dance and upset Georgetown and Patrick Ewing years ago.

Regular season rankings can be subjective but they are for us, the fans. We wait until the ‘2nd season’ is complete to provide the final ranking.

Butta Rankings are never done throughout the playoffs. We do them at the beginning of the season, during the season and after the state championships. That is the way it is done in both football and basketball. Even in the NCAA they don’t do rankings throughout the conferences and championship tournament and in football they don’t do them throughout the bowls or playoffs.

Respond to Mike the hater on Why good athletes go to Dunwoody “no body can make anyone do anything They don’t want to do” Dunwoody has two championship under its belt and if players choose to go there or move into the Area it has nothing to do with the staff or the coach, people move for different reasons jobs opportunity is a major factor Stop hating Mike if that is your real name “You sound like a Cherokee or Druid Hill hater who is p** off because you lost the best thing that ever ran thru your school and when you had it you did not recognize how good he was till he left. Hey thesmart1, then tell me why did Wheeler get beat by Beach two yrs ago when they were suppose to win the championship again? And why did wheeler lose to Norcross in the 1st rd last yr when they were supposed to beat Norcross? You know they had great talent both yrs but for some unknown reason they blinked. And last yr they had the best player in the state-JJ Hickson but still could not find a way to win.

So I just wonder if those losses are still in their minds. I know Coach Lipscomb remembers both losses and still has some pain about the question, how could Wheeler have lost when they were suppose to win?

By Derrick Mahone

February 12, 2008 10:32 PM | Link to this

scout of the year Not sure what you are talking about because there is no all-classification section.

Hater? I hate on no team, player or coach. You probably missed the big headline when Derrick Favors had his big game against Therrell. Two weeks ago, when I did the story on building a complete player, Derrick Favors was in it with his picture.

And this: http://www.ajc.com/sports/content/printedition/2008/02/08/hsrail0208.html

I’m happy for the South Atlanta players and Mike Reddick for the recognition they are getting considering the obstacles they have overcome. Last week I mention about them not playing a home game in two seasons because of renovation at the school. I also mention about them having to attend school 14 miles from their main campus because of the renovations.

bwash21 The biggest upset so far that I know of is in Region 5-AAA where No. 6 seed Therrell beat No. 3 seed Druid Hills 68-67. A mild upset is in Region 5-A where No. 6 seed Landmark Christian beat No. 3 seed Atlanta International School.

Wheeler wins 76-59

Northview beats Walton 56-55 on a 3-pointer at the buzzer by Daniel Stryzinski.

To answer yor question devil lover, Savannah High can beat Wheeler, but it won’t be easy. Savannah is scrappy, and don’t fold under pressure. They have two good guards who can get up and down the floor with anyone. Wheeler’s advantage is the inside game, which is better than Savannah’s. Savannah’s game plan will be to run because they know that their front line is week. The winner of that game will be team that play the best on that day but I give a slight advantage to Wheeler. Score - Wheeler 75, Savannah High 70.

Hey Derrick here are the scores from the region #3 5A standings. Just left Savannah, Ga. Great basketball. Any scores from region #1-5A.

1 Savannah High 92 - #8 Jenknis 46 2 Johnson 57 - #7 Windsorforset 52 4 Groves 77 - #5 Camden Co. 59 6 Beach 63 - #3 Bradwell Ins. 59

Hey Ernest your Sugar city boys are still a live. Give credit to Windsorforest it was a hell of a game. The crowd stood up most of the game. I’ll be back Friday night for the semi-finals to see Johnson vs Beach at 7pm and then Sav.High vs Groves at 9p. It’s said to be sold out at 4p, got to get there early.

To devil lover, your answer is NO. Wheeler is very strong and it seems that Savannh High will not be able to match up with Wheeler’s size. They had problems dealing with the 6’8 kid from Mundy’s Mill and lost the game by two. However to Savannah High’s credit they have one of the most dangerous underated back courts in the state. Seniors Kevin Williams and Norris Rumph are good. Kevin Williams is probably one the most consistent shooters in the country. It is said that he’s in range as soon as he walks in the gym. Norris Rumph is a pure slasher that will kill off the dribble. But if Wheeler can not defend a press then yes Savannah will win the game, because they press very well.

The best match up for Wheeler coming from the South regions in my opinion is Johnson, of Sav. They have height and talent. It would be a good matchup between Dequan and Toby Veal. I strongly believe that Johnson could get it done over Wheeler.

Pebblebrook 52, Cherokee 50 Chris Deny hits a floater in the lane with three seconds remaining. Chris Beasley scored only nine points, but got his 2,000th career points in the first quarter.

Thanks PeachJamm but no thanks. The problem is that Johnson will probably come in 2nd in region 3 which will put them on the right upper side of the state brackets. Therefore, Norcross will have to beat Centennial in the 2nd rd, Marietta in the 3rd rd and then the winner of Johnson Sav vs Reddan in the semis to play Wheeler in the finals. Wheeler only has to beat Savannah in the semis to play Norcross in the finals. Don’t get me wrong, last yr we had to beat Wheeler, Meadowcreek, Marietta, Tift County and Centennial all top ten teams to win the championship. Lets hope that Johnson beat Savannah in the regional championship then.

cross%over, thanks for the update! Please keep us posted on what you see.

C’mon Truth, show some love for our girls. Of the 60+ posts here thus far, mine was the only one that mentioned girls. Though I don’t have a daughter playing, I do like the style of ball they play. Also, Title IX suggests they should get some mentions from time to time…. :)

Scout of the year, You suck!!!!!!!!! You whine and cry all the time about South Atlanta but your reality check is coming because South Atlanta is actually going to start playing actual competition and not church league teams. I’m begging South Atlanta to make it to Macon so Jordan can blow right past them. I hope you come with them so I can see the pathetic look on your face when the pa announcer announces the final score. You guys have Blessed Trinity tonight and if you get past them you will more than likely play Dunwoody. Good Luck on that. I hope you guys have something in the tank to make to Macon. I want to know if South Atlanta has ever won a state title? if they haven’t you sure need to shut your mouth until otherwise.

Derrick Mahone is not a hater of South Atlanta. He is just a hater of Scout of the Year and his crying about a fantasy national ranking. I would have more respect for South Atlanta if they were on the other side of region 5-aaa. That region needs to be balanced out. The good teams are all on one side of the region

to eric woods. First of all isiah had some help leaving druid hills. We wanted him to stay, but they dunwoody coaches kept calling him for two years to come to dunwoody. Don’t believe it, ask grayson. I know for a fact they recruited him. Dekalb knows about it, bracco and hi staff now. The black coach from dunwoody called him for two years at druid hills. Everyone knows he’s they are dirty. It’s no secret that graham and grayson did not move. You will be exposed like clemens for cheating. Hey dunwoody an ** will be placed by your name. Mahone please report these schools for cheating. Please respond
