Unbeaten start not enough for some

Being unbeaten apparently doesn’t automatically mean being No. 1.

In the latest Georgia Sportswriters Association poll, released Wednesday, only three of the state’s 10 unbeaten teams sit atop the polls. Hancock Central boys in Class A, defending Class AAA champions Jordan and Randolph-Clay boys in AA go into the weekend games unbeaten and top-ranked.

Hancock will get a big test Friday, when it plays at second-ranked and defending Class A champion Wilkinson County.

The majority of the metro teams’ losses have come against other ranked teams in the area or on the road against some stiff nationally ranked teams.

Norcross will again test itself when the two-time defending Class AAAAA champions take on previously nationally ranked Helen Cox of Louisiana in a nationally televised game on ESPN2 Thursday.

Only seven points separated Jordan and second-ranked South Atlanta, which has lost only to St. Benedict’s Prep of New Jersey, the No. 1 team in the nation. The final score was 57-43 Dec. 28 in a Christmas tournament in Charlotte.

One pollster gave the Hornets their No. 1 vote.

Post up: The sportswriters in the state have made their choices. Are these teams you think are the best in the state? Who did we miss? Have any suggestions?

A tear came to my eye when I saw that the Lady Panthers of SWD were a unanimous #1 in AAAA. As I’ve stated many times before, they will prove to be worthy of that ranking.

Of note, of the 50 top 10 boys teams, 8 of them are in DeKalb County. Now if that isn’t making a statement regarding the talent in our county, I don’t know what is. We could have champions in multiple classes again this year. I think it is a lock that we’ll see champions for AAAA.

HS Basketball Fever, I’ve got it!!!

Are you shing me? Jordan played probably the worst 4A team in the state and all 3A teams none of which are ranked, but S.Atl looses 1 game to the #1 ranked team in the nation and you rank Jordan #1 in the state. No wonder prep sports in GA are in trouble. Leave it up to these dumb a coaches to screw up a simple task.Having won the championship last year should not have an affect on this years rankings.

why that it seems to me that the ajc have a problem with ranking and respeting atlanta metro teams thruogh out the years .please if there ever been honest play for the love of it ,it should be in prep sports . case in point douglas high basketball program boy playing great right now but no corvage from ajc and the girls the same story its obviOus that KHAALIDAH MILLER IS THE BEST PLAYER IN THE STATE SINCE MYA MORE LEFT. WHY are you called the atlanta jaournal if you dont respect the atlanta schools accomplishments.

To Will, just for the records Jordan has not played a 4a team, and yes the teams they have beat are not ranked, but they have just about all their players back from last year championship team and they are in very good shape.

My bad on the 4A thing, but as far as rankings are concerned, S. Atl should be ranked higher because of their national schedule played.

I’m not trying to take anything away from s. atl but, why is it a problem that jordan is ranked ahead of them, its not like they are #10 or not ranked at all they are #2 to the team that won the state last year, and i know last year does not have to do with anything about this year, but jordan does have everybody, and me personally i dont care about rankings, but it all we tell come deep into playoff time.

By afan

January 10, 2008 2:59 PM | Link to this

and another thing, thats good their playing teams outside of ga. but, it really does not matter who you play, it does not mean that their going to win a state championship, what matters is if a team is in good shape during the playoffs.

Jordan is still No. 1 because they started the season off at No. 1 and haven’t lost a game this season. They were ranked No. 1 coming into the season based on the that they had four of their starters and top scorers back from a team that won state last season. South Atlanta started the season at No. 2 and hasn’t moved up because Jordan hasn’t lost. South Atlanta is getting invited to all the big tournaments and playing against out-of-town teams because of Derrick Favors. It gives him a chance to play against some other top big men in the junior class.

Big game in at The Palace in Irwinton when new No. 1 Hancock Central puts it unbeaten record on the line against No. 2-ranked and defending champions Wilkinson County.

Big metro game, with No. 1 Columbia hosting No. 4 Miller Grove. Others: Creekside at Westlake GAC at Decatur Redan at M.L. King Harrison at McEachern South Atlanta at Southside

Trying to decide where to go.

Somebody at the AJC is not researching to good, AAAA boys Miller Grove beat Tucker and have two losses one to Columbia and to the #10 National ranked team on the USA Today poll from Cinncinati. There is something wrong with this picture.

The best region in the state of Georgia in any classifcation Boys and Girls has more teams ranked and beat up on each other. AAAA Region 6 - Miller Grove, Columbia, Tucker, Marist, Pius, Stone Mountain, Mays, SW Dekalb. The state champion stays in this Region.

For some reason people forget about Dunwoody. Please don’t forget that these guys know how to play. I also think that Flowery Branch may be overrated, they got beat by a very average White County team. For anyone who care Amanu from Norcross may be the best player in the state, followed by Chris Singleton. He is lazy but good

I FIND IT AWFULLY HARD TO BELIEVE THAT MR. DERRICK MALONE DID THESE RANKIKNGS. HE IS AN EXPERT AND THE AAAA RANKINGS COULDNT BE FARTHER AWAY FROM UNRESEARCHED. HOW IS IT, THAT A MILLER GROVE SQUAD THAT IS RANKED #2 IN EVERY STATE POLL AND HAS LOST ONLY TWO GAMES TO #1 RANKED COLUMBIA (#19 IN THE NATION) AND MOELLER CINCINATTI (#7 IN THE NATION)ARE RANKED BEHIND A BARELY .500 REBUILDING TUCKER SQUAD WHO THE DEMOLISHED EARLIER THIS YEAR AND A WESTLAKE TEAM THAT THO GOOD PLAYS A WEAK SCHEDULE. MILLER GROVE PLAYS THE TOUGHEST SCHEDULE THIS STATE HAS TO OFFER. #1 COLUMBIA TWICE, #6 STONE MOUNTAIN TWICE. #2 IN AAAAA WHEELER, #1 IN AA WESLYAN, #7 IN NATION MOELLER CINCINNATI. WITH ALL DO RESPEST, AJC IS THE ONLY POLL IVE SEEN TUCKER EVEN MENTIONED IN AND IM SURE THAT THEY ARE EVEN SUPRISED TO BE N YOUR POLL. IF AJC IS GOING TO BE RESPECTED 4 THEIR VIEWS, PLEASE DONT CHEAT FANS WITH UNRESEARCHED POLLS WITH FALSE INFORMATION. THANK U.

By Derrick Mahone

January 11, 2008 11:28 AM | Link to this

Ike9 Thanks, and you are right. It is voted on by about 10 sports writers from across the state, hence, the Georgia Sportswriters Association poll, not AJC poll. If it was the AJC poll it would have been a lot different. To address Michael Stewart, Miller Grove probably should have been over Tucker, but came up six points shot. Ironically, Tucker only lost to Miller Grove by eight early in the season when the Wolverines were playing great and Tucker was struggling with three sophomores and two juniors in the lineup. They only returned one starter from last year’s championship team. Tucker losses were to Redan (56-52), Miller Grove (70-62) and Berkmar (77-64). Miller Grove beat Redan by 1 point for the DeKalb County championship. Talked to James Hartry, Tucker’s coach earlier this week, and he called those three losses the best of his career and should go a long way in helping this team at the end of the season. Tucker is a top 10 team based on its 11-3 record, which is way above .500. They have played a competitivie non-region schedule. Won a tournament in Florida. As far as Westlake, they are a very good team with Oklahoma signee Raymond Willis, Winthorpe signee Gideon Gamble and a host of juniors and sophomores that will be Div. I signees in the next two years. There schedule is competitive too with a win over Provine, a 5A powerhouse in Mississippi and IMG of Fla. Loss to Neumann-Goretti of Pa. and top-ranked Norcross (62-57). They have beaten a talented Fayette County team on the road and will play against Fla. power Arlington Country Day on next Saturday in the Prime Time Shootout. With all do respect, maybe Tucker is GSWA poll because someone has done some research.

By Derrick Mahone

January 11, 2008 12:08 PM | Link to this

Thanks Ike9 for clearing that up. The Georgia Sportswriters Association Poll is voted on by writers throughout the state and each has an input on providing information about teams in their coverage areas.

Michael Stewart If it was just me doing the poll, I probably would have had Miller Grove ahead of Tucker, but not ahead of Westlake. MG did beat a young Tucker team, which has as many as three sophomores in the lineup early in the season by eight points. At the time Miller Grove was playing real well while Tucker was still trying to find itself after graduating four starters from last season. I still think they are pretty close and the points that seperated them in the voting reflects that. I think Tucker is a top 10 team, and if they can make it out a tough region tournament, will go far in the state. Tucker other losses were to Redan, by four, a team that MG beat by 1 in the DeKalb County championship and a good 5A Berkmar team. Tucker won a tournament in Florida. Tucker’s record is 11-3, which I think is “more than barely” above .500 against some good teams. On Westlake they are very good with senior guards 6-7 Raymond Willis (Oklahoma signee) and 6-7 Gideon Gamble (Winthorpe signee). They have some good young and tall inside players. Westlake has played a competitive schedule with wins over Jackson, Mississippi power Provine and Florida power IMG. Their losses were to Neumann-Goretti of Pa. and some team called Norcross by five. They have beaten a good Fayette County. With all do respect, may Tucker is in the GSWA Poll because someone did do some research.

Please check gasports.con before you finalize your rankings they cover teams from around the state. Sandy Creek High School girl’s are curently ranked 9th in the state AAA polls. They defeated Mary Persons 57-51 in the championship game of the Mary Persons Christmas Tournament. Then defeated Warner Robins and Jonesboro to reach the finals of the Jones County Christmas Tournament. They lost at the buzzer to AJC #2 AAA Carrollton 53-51 in a very tough match-up. Sandy Creek features Morgan Toles, the #3 point guard in the nation.

Did anyone see the N. Gwinnett game against Norcross? Some of you may consider it an easy win (which it wasn’t, considering Norcross beats many of the region competition by like 40 points. Tonight, it was only an 11 point difference. Norcross beat N. Gwinnett 61-50. I really cant wait for the game on Saturday, hope we win. Oh and some of you people who like to argue, N. Gwinnett was winning most of the first quarter or all I think. It was a really good game, and Norcross would’ve lost if they didn’t hog the ball and play monkey-in-the-middle with N. Gwinnett. Really good win though, hope we win Saturday (I doubt it though, but it would be great).

hey Derrick,

Can you see Marietta competing with the powers of class 5-AAAAA? They have size in Seniors DeAndre Cannon (6’6), JC Ward (6’5), and Scott Bartlemay (6’6). As well as range in Bartlemay and Senior Stanley Jennings who combine for 6.4 3-pointers per game by themselves. Point Guard Chris Tanzy is a spark plug who was the key missing in the early to losses, the Devils are 12-0 with him. Stanley Jennings actually outscored Trae Golden in the game against McEachern with 25 points and 6 3-pointers. Also, what exactly do you make of the girls losses to Wesleyan and McEachern?

I love this…South Atlanta running their mouths like they are the best in the state when they aren’t even the best in AAA. I go to every Jordan game and know that this team is even better than last years championship team. Jordan can beat anybody in the country, they just don’t get the attention as some teams. South Atlanta would get tired and want to quit in submission after Jordan ran them up and down the court to death. Jordan just never gets tired and on top of that they have 3 stars kind of like the Boston celtics have and have a GREAT supporting cast. The running they do would even make parish island look like a breeze. But I laugh as i read some of the comments on South Atlanta being the best because I know they just don’t have a clue about how good Jordan is…The point guard winford ivey would dribble circles around the defense of any team, he makes great passes, has great D, and can shoot when needed to, he is low to the ground and has incredible speed. Terrance Hill can shoot from anywhere on the court and make anybody look stupid at anytime and also is fast as lightning. Steve Peterson is a 6’3 forward that looks like he has a wing span of 7’0. He can shoot, block shots, rebound, steal passes with his long arms and can just flat out play. Jordan might not play nationally ranked teams but that doesnt mean they wouldnt beat them if they played them because i assure you they can beat anybody. But i mean who are you anyway i mean where were you last year while we dominated the final four and won the championship, wheres your state title last year? Yeah and the last three games we have played we have stepped our game up to a toally diff. level which is really scary. yeah you get on to us for barely beating hardaway EARLY in the year but we just beat the team that that beat them twice already 103-46 because we have stepped our game up for the home stretch of the season. Please win in the playoffs so you can play us because you will then know who we are.

Thanks INPAIN for the information on Northgate. A lot of people in 2-AAAA region have wondered why they still keep the boys basketball coach. Surely there are some good players at their school. I have heard from a parent that there were two players that were off the charts but were cut for not being coachable. We all know what that phrase means. Definitely no pressure to win when you are the assistant A.D. Parents will have to come together to get rid of him. I feel for your school.

Scout of the year your not going to come to our game. you will just say you did and trash us anyway. All I know is I hope South Atlanta traps us the whole game because that would be a costly mistake. Ask every team that has trapped us full court what the final score was in the game. We don’t care is Favors gets a 100 points in a game as long as the score says 101-100. You can joke about are region but your region is p** poor. The only team that has a descent record is Southside and they lost pretty early in the playoffs last year. It’s a good story with South Atlanta but I wouldn’t even know who South Atlanta was if it wasn’t for Derek Favors. Well good luck in the season. I just hope the two best teams get to play each other so we can settle this on the court. P.S. National rankings are a joke so stop talking about it.

Maybe it’s just me, but it appears that Chamblee High School can’t cut a break with any type of recognition. Granted the team is not undefeated but it does have an un-noticed talent here in the Atlanta metro area. Swingman Brandon O’Brien has had a solid season thus far and is on path to continue doing so. Truly he is a student athlete that is being over shadowed by those who carry bad attitudes and those who may not be playing at their true age. Hopefully AJC you can find someway to bring attention to those un-noticed gems that can easily play at the next level.

You people in Atlanta think you have class, well you don’t and if you did you would let your actions speak for itself. You people have too much mouth and not common sense. Talent is talent no matter where you are, Atlanta schools are not the only schools that can play basketball, so stop acting like a bunch of upset brats that you are. Jordan 17-0 and is ranked number one by the AJC, South Atlanta number two.

Scout of the year, You keep talking crap about who you play but the stars on Jordans team has played some of the best players in the country on their AAU team and have had no trouble with them. So that means nothing to me, and i have seen how bad your region is in basketball so you have nothing to say about our region. We have a AA size school playing in AAA, we run a clean program with every single player belonging to our school. We have a basketball TEAM that doesnt have just one star. I hope to God you trap and play man to man because if you do against us it will be the biggest mistake of your life. Ask East Hall which played a Jordan team last year that is even better this year about trying to trap us and play man to man. Maybe you should watch that state championship game from last year and then you will understand. Jordan would rather play against a bigger team any time. Northside has two 6’10 guys in their starting line up in our region, height mean nothing to us, our speed kills. Jordan 17-0 #1 …all that matters

I have to agree basketball scout; atlanta is not the only place where they can play basketball.I think the people from atl schools are trying to say is now we have some good talent and they are not getting enough coverage by thier home town paper ajc.But can atl schools really fault the ajc for this. I think not it has to be reported to the ajc. there has to be a relationship established with the local paper. Are schools like douglass mays etc reporting info to the ajc and the ajc refusing to publish the info? Effort has to be put forth on both parts. As far as talent GA has talent everywhere Yes talent is talent.Right now I can only speak for who ive seen and khaalidah miller has awsome talent and true maybe there are some other girls that have the same talent (like at jordan)So i think the issue is being able to establish relationships with the media and hs coaches puting the info out there to college coaches putting in the real work of sending out info like tapes etc. to different colleges. But parents sometimes you may have to do it yourself or make sure its done.

Northgate lost to Creekside last night by thirty points. It could have been worse. Yes the coach needs to be gone. The players want him gone. These young men should be having fun. Instead they have a loose cannon for a coach. As mentioned by a earlier post his four year record is beyond bad. We are the joke of our region. He was the girls coach also, until this year. They were terrible also. Now they are rocking and rolling with a new coach. Amazing.

Derrick,

I am still having issues with your unclassified Top 10 poll. Blessed Trinity remains undefeated and has beaten Marietta by 15 in THEIR HOUSE YET you have them in the Top 10 but claim “BT isn’t ready just yet for the Top 10?” You almost did the same with Dunwoody who BT also beat in their house by 5. You use the Etowah results as justification to put Marietta in, but not the head to head…go figure? If I didn’t know any better, I think it would be clear you have some kind of bias against well coached, scrappy, team-oriented Catholic Schools who consistently outperform more talented, larger, public school programs. A W is a W…teams are always going to have off nights, but it is the good teams that figure out a way to win even when their game is off. The BT Boys just got through that week prior to the Etowah game with a grueling Final Exam Week, which fully explains the close win, so let’s not even go there with Academics at Marietta :)…they were just shaking off the rust and stepping back up from the mental drain of Finals at one of the most challenging high schools in America.

That is fine, keep dissing BT, we’ll use all the dissing as fodder for additional motivation at State ! Go Titans!

vbakerjr, to me personally, i think BT, should be ranked in from of s. atl., because who you all have played and beat.
