Lowndes-ward bound wisely seek edge

Darryl Maxie

Maybe it’s nothing more than a mind game, motivating his team to coax another yard out of a play where it wouldn’t appear there’s another yard to be gained.

It’s understandable why Roswell coach Tim McFarlin fought for the interests of his team’s fans when it came to the scheduling of today’s quarterfinal game at Lowndes. It’s about a four-hour trip down I-75, and for many Roswell fans - working folk just like the good people of Valdosta - getting off work early enough to arrive in time for the kickoff is a hardship.

So he didn’t sign the contract to play Friday at his first opportunity, though truth be told, he didn’t have much of a leg to stand on. What’s more, he painted himself into a corner by publicly admitting as much.

It’s Lowndes’ home game and therefore Lowndes’ call, he said. If the principals for both schools can’t work it out, the decision will go to the Georgia High School Association, he said. The GHSA almost certainly will rule in favor of Lowndes, he said.

Reading that, I wondered what motivation - other than goodness of heart - would the Lowndes principal, Wes Taylor, have for ceding any of his team’s home-field advantage.

McFarlin seemed to make it easy for Taylor to take a hard line, knowing Roswell didn’t have any leverage, knowing that McFarlin had already made it easy for the GHSA - which famously rocks the boat as little as possible - to simply rule in Lowndes’ favor, since McFarlin had already prepared fans to brace for the worst.

Yet, McFarlin pushed for an extra yard out of a situation where no extra yardage was to be gained. While the game wasn’t moved to Saturday, as McFarlin had hoped would reduce the strain on his team’s fans, you’ve got to give him credit for trying.

That may not sound like much, but if you’re going to the Concrete Palace - Lowndes’ Martin Stadium - you try to take whatever you can get. Toe hasn’t even met leather yet, to coin an old Ciraldoism, and the gamesmanship has begun.

Roswell isn’t a champion without reason, but it’s gotten some breaks along the way. The extra yard McFarlin tried to bargain for this week, Alex Daniel got last week for the decisive touchdown in overtime against Peachtree Ridge. That the ball popped free before Daniel broke the plane is a break - no different than hundreds of breaks that everybody gets in a season - but it must be remembered that the Hornets made their own breaks to position themselves for the freebie.

The fourth-down conversion on the last drive, the touchdown pass to Garrett Embry. Without those, Daniel is peeling off his jersey in the locker room rather than rumbling with determination in overtime toward Lowndes.

That said, the Hornets would have their hands full with Lowndes on any day of the week. Of the past three Class AAAAA championships, Lowndes has two. Roswell has a half. The Vikings have come up with monster home games when least expected. The nail-biter that was supposed to be the 2005 Class AAAAA championship became a Lowndes laugher, 49-7.

The moral of that story: One bets against the Vikings at home at his own peril. They’ve won 11 in a row since losing to Harrison in the season-opener. Says here they make it an even dozen.

Elsewhere, it’s time to break some “laws.”

The Law of Reverse Polarity: “Every time you pick against us, we win.”

No doubt, some find the little extra motivational oomph to win when their name appears below the “loser” column. Conversely, some seem to misplace the juice when their name appears below the “winner” column.

This week, we’ll flout the law. Some of these picks are fake. Next week, after the games are over, I’ll reveal which ones were actually real, thus proving once and for all that The Law of Reverse Polarity can be faked out.

The Law of Playoff Syllogism: Grayson crushed Chattahoochee. Chattahoochee beat Camden County. Therefore, Grayson will crush Camden County.

No.

Remember when North Gwinnett defeated Peachtree Ridge and Peachtree Ridge defeated Norcross and then North Gwinnett was supposed to defeat Norcross but got smacked in the head and coughed up a region championship?

That’s the commonplace exception that makes high school football so compelling. There are just some things you can’t count on, even though Camden County has been known to make a brother nervous (home playoff losses to Dacula in 2005 and Warner Robins in 2006).

The Law of Charlton County Kryptonite: Charlton County has been Buford’s lone weak spot these last three years, but that all ends tonight in the swamp. Ralph Bolden’s torn ACL will weaken the Indians, though strengthen their resolve. But it won’t be enough. Buford wins.

The Law of Playoff Syllogism. You had a dictionary next to you didn’t you. Grayson is grounded and knows the ball can bounce either way here, it is the playoffs. Same thing was said with Norcross and Grayson beat them on the third time when it counts. In the playoffs. Interested to hear if you have a prognostication of the final score between Camden and Grayson. Both defenses are very sound. Will this be a game of field goals? Leg up goes to Grayson. Get it—-kicking—-leg up—-nevermind. Would like to see how Grayson handles the road trip to Camden. This is their first time this far in the playoffs against a team that makes it to the playoffs often. Think this will define region superiority as well. Tough call here. Should be a really good game. Thoughts?

Hey Max, I am glad you came to your senses or maybe it was a typo. In your video it showed you picked Rome over NSWR. Could it happen? Sure, at this stage everyone is tough but NSWR should be favored. Thanks for the correction (in print). Boy, there is going to be some crow eating after Friday. On to the dome NSWR.

i dint think the road trip will not be a factor.left a while back and they seem focused. i would like to think, camden will take them lightly, because of their trip. im sure they are practicing at this time as usual on a thursday night. dinner, and prob. to bed earlier then if they were at home.

grayson is a very physical team, they are going to be hard to beat!

you know, ive been thinking about all the taems that have traveled to camden and lowndes in the past, on the day of the game. sure it would be hard to compete after a drive like that. the problem is, and camden even says,”we cant help it if we have a weak region”. ok, so they are in a weak region, and they will prob. take 1st place in their region, which gives them at a home field advantage in the playoffs. so now we know why teams have to travel down there. well, maybe that has something to do with why they make it to the playoffs so often? hmmm, just a thought. everyone seems to think, a team cant play after traveling, and they admit to having a weak region. well, im just glad grayson players didnt wait until tomorrow to leave.

some schools better take their money they make from the post season and increase the size of their stadiums too. now, on the subject of stadiums. i always said, roswell wins some of their games at home because, others are not use to playing on their tuff, well, kudos to them for having it put in! seems to work to their advantage. slighty concerned about that, if anything, when it comes to camden.

coaches, schools, take a look at the big pictures of these teams that make it year after year. its not only what players you have on your teams, it everything, and some of these schools have it down to an art.

As you all know Camden is located in the Southeast corner of Georgia; therefore; every away trip is at least two hours. To my knowledge, Camden always drives to Atlanta for the Corkey Kell Classic as well as the final four (if we gwt there) on the day of the game. Our kids are somewhat accustomed to playing after very long road trips. Therefore, will the road trip affect Grayson? I think Grayson will be ready to play regardless of the long trip; however, there is something to be said about sleeping in your own bed the night prior to a big game. Both teams will certainly have their game faces and be ready to compete. Some people choose to talk negatively about thier oppositions; however, I certainly see little room for any negative comments when a team reaches the third round of the State Play-Offs. Classful teams never talk negative anyway, they just play the game. Camden Fans, show class tomorrow night, pull for the Wildcats and keep all negative comments to yourself. The game will be won or lost on the field, not in the stands. Good luck Grayson. Camden Wildcats, simply continue the winning tradition by exhibiting sportmanship as well as hard offensive and defensive play. GO WILDCATS——WE HAVE BEEN HERE BEFORE—-PLAY HARD SHOW CLASS——THE REST WILL WORK ITSELF OUT ON THE FIELD. I also want to say thank you to our coaching staff. You guys do a great job.

Maxie, thanks for the positive words on behalf of the Plowboys. Coach Mac Pherson stated on his radio show earlier this week that high school football is played on Friday nights, not Saturday. Obviously this is a traditional thing for the Coach. I’ve heard him state before that he does not like playing on Saturday. If all goes well this Friday I guess He’ll just have to suck it up and head toward the big city next Saturday. I believe this will be a great game tomorrow night.

the only thing i have said about either teams talent is, grayson is very physical team, they will be hard for anyone to beat. GO GRAYSON. and thats not to say camden is not, i dont know.

MLK Fans & Supporters,

So many are convinced that Walton will defeat MLK and here may be one reason why …. READ ON…

I just received a phone call informing me that the referees for the Walton v. MLK Game on tomorrow are all coming from Cobb County and have officiated Walton’s games this year. What???? Walton High School just happens to be in COBB COUNTY. How convenient, for Cobb that is. Normally, in the playoffs, the officials for the games have not seen either team play (especially not ALL of them). This supposedly allows some fairness for both teams. Every Monday, the MLK coach receives an email letting him know who the officials for the next game will be. That did not happen this week. So, when he attempted to contact the head of the officials’ organization about not being informed, he was given the run around. When he finally reached someone, they decided to inform him that they have been doing their job for 29 years and threw their credentials in his face. All he wanted to know was who would be officiating tomorrow night’s game. Well MLK, if this is indeed true, and it is, no one has to say wait until tomorrow night and “let the cheating begin.” Sorry Lions, “the cheating has already begun.” Well coach, you never got the email because no one wanted you to know ahead of time what tricks were being played. You should play the game under protest.

MLK we believe in you and support you. I trust no other teams in the playoffs are having to endure the same. JUST PLAY BALL AND PLAY YOUR BEST.

Concerning this weak region thing. Let’s Review. Region 1-AAAAA is hands down the toughest. No question No arguments. Region 2-AAAAA MLK has been okay but just starting to peak this year. Stephenson has been the toughest consistently and Camden is 2-0 against them. No one else worth mentioning. Region 3-AAAAA I admit only Camden lives there. Everyone else is garbage. Region 4-AAAAA is a laughable region. Newnan is probably the “best” but East Coweta as a second seed is a joke. No one else worth mentioning. Region 5-AAAAA Etowah?? Kennesaw Mountain?? Never heard of the guys. North Cobb only one worth mentioning though Harrison did show promise in the beginning. Region 6A-AAAAA I almost want to skip this region. Kell? Pope? Wow what a strong region (sarcasm). Walton only one worth mentioning. Region 6B-AAAAA Roswell the only one worth mentioning. Maybe Hooch in a few years though. Camden had a really off game I admit. This region has potential just not in the next 5 years. Who are Milton and Northview anyway? Region 7-AAAAA This region is pretty legitimate actually. I give props to North Gwin, Norcross and Pea Ridge. Pea RIDGE you were robbed this year!!! Tough break. No one else worth mentioning though. Finally Region 8-AAAAA Brookwood and Parkview are pretty consistent but Parkview has gone downhill. Grayson is very good this year. No one else is worth mentioning. Bottom line our region 3-AAAAA teams got beat in the 1st round by 1-AAAAA teams because they are in fact THE BEST. But….I’m willing to bet our Windsor Forests and Savannah Jenkins would give your Kells, Luellas, Mundy’s Mills, Kennesaw Mountains etc. a run for their money!!!

Secondly, don’t try to start making up excuses for why MLK is going to lose. Walton has not been given any respect this year, even though they fully deserve it. To Camden Fan: No offense, because I think the most of St. Mary’s and Jeff Herron is one of my favorite coaches in the state going back to when he was at Oconee, but the only competing that Jenkins and Savannah and Windsor Forest and Beach will ever do in regards to the rest of the state is on the basketball court. Oh, and I hear Windsor Forest has a great one act play this year, but the days of Savannah schools being relevant in the state’s highest classification on the football field are over. Beach: hasn’t played 12 games in a season since 1988. Jenkins: has never played more than 11 games in a season. Savannah: Went 10-2 in 93, losing in the first round back when they still had region playoffs. Since then, one winning season. Windsor Forest: Not a single playoff win since the 70s? Groves: See Windsor Forest. Besides, the best team playing out of Westside Stadium is Savannah Christian. Johnson: Nine wins in the last seven seasons.

Not much of a pedigree. So the bottom line is that Region 3AAAAA teams may have played the best in 1AAAAA, but that wasn’t why they lost. They just aren’t that good. I grew up there. I covered those teams. I know.

Just fair: There are 5 football referee organizations in the Atlanta Metro area and 21 in the state. The GHSA assigns the games to one of the organizations and the organization then assigns officials from a list submitted to the state prior to the play-offs. At this time of the year it is almost impossible for the best groups not to have seen a team sometime during the season. If all the officials of the game happen to live in Cobb Co that would be a coincidence as the 5 Atlanta metro groups pull their members from all over the metro area. As the third team on the field, we hope our game is just as good as the other two teams.

Oh, it’s very true, and no one is looking for any excuse for a loss, because MLK will still prevail over Walton. Actually, bad calls and sometimes even cheating is a part of the game. MLK has disrespected no one and to my knowledge, Walton has not either. The media and biased fans have done enough of that for both of them, as well as a few other teams. I wish them both the best on the field, but we all want to see a good and fair game. Both teams and their fans deserve that. This statement was not about disrepect against Walton, it was about fairness to both, and we all trust that the referees will be fair to both teams. I was going to the Lowndes/Roswell game (it should be exciting), but I will be at Walton/MLK’s instead (it will be interesting and exciting). I have followed many of these teams for years, even Walton, and just love the sport. Do not misunderstand, I actually like Walton.

For example, Roswell is one of my favorites and yes I am happy to see them advance, but even I must admit that it was clearly a fumble and not a touchdown in last week’s game after watching a videotape of the game, but fortunately for Roswell and unfortunately for Peachtree-Ridge, those are the breaks. I am just being fair to both, but it is history now!

Best wishes to all tonight.

Habersham Central has the distinction of being the true road warriors tonight. Travelling from extreme NE GA to extreme SE GA, they will log a round trip of 660 miles. Hopefully two records and a win will result from this road trip. Taverras King setting the new state record for receptions and receiving yards. My prediction, Hab 28 Ware 21. Go Raiders!

What student athlete was mentioning, which you and others condescendingly refer to as the “race card”, is relevant. This is America and racism is embedded in its very foundation (e.g., Constitution…remember the 3/5 compromise?). I’m sure you’re also aware that the constructs of “black” and “white” were created here also, right?

GRAYSONFAN You stated and I quote:

we are all equal! its a free country, live were you want, go to school were you live!

In a word…laughable. For every one example you can give me of “equality”, I could provide 8-10 refutations and I pray that you try me…

That said, go MLK, go Charlton, go Northside, & go Perry.

The comments about the officiating are very true, we will have the same officiating crew from last week and yes it is not fair. Why do we have to prove ourselves this every week. It feels like we have to prove ourselves to the state of Ga when we should not have too. This is football not a politics. It is obvious that we are no closer to inequality now than we were back in 1957. My point is if it was Valdosta, or Harrison, or Marist, or St. Pius, you get my point they would have nothing to prove. What really ticks me off is the comments about our mental capacity. We have coaches with (MASTER) degrees from establish institutions, and coaches with College and Pro Experience, why can’t we just coach like all the other coaches instead of us just being (STUPID) and having talent. Like the game last night, is the packers coach stupid or did Bret Farve just have a bad game. Oh yea it is easy to down play the race card when you have never been affected by it. You wouldn’t understand….

The race card is only played when one can not compete in the arena of idea’s, it’s this notion of self pity that holds you back MLk fan (“student athlete”), if you haven’t noticed; on Saturday and Sunday most of the best athletes are black. So if Walton destroys MLK it’s not because of superior athletic play, but team work and coaching. Odds are that athletically speaking your team probably has the advantage. Just look at last weeks 4A match-up between Mays and East Paulding. Mays was a more talented team, but because of poor coaching and a lack of discipline (i.e.) “Mays will be without running back/linebacker Naeem Thomas, receiver Corey Heard and reserve linebacker Octavious Woods” “The three were suspended for one game after being involved in a fight during Saturday’s first-round game against Cedar Shoals.” East Paulding wins 21-3 and moves on while Mays watches from home. Race did not stop Clearance Thomas, but I highly doubt you know who that is, and that is what’s sad. The lesson here is if you want to achieve a goal, all it takes is work, so stop blaming whitey for your short comings and go achieve something notable! Good luck tonight too both The East Paulding and Walton Raiders.

it is truly sad that every single blog that runs on ajc turns into black vs white. Just go out and play the game, the team that comes to play will win. BTW, I happen to know who Clarence Thomas is as do my sons, both who attend MLK. You shouldn’t feed into stereotypes EP Alum. At any rate, Good luck to both teams tonight!!!! No matter the outcome, it is obvious that both schools have great teams that deserve to be in the quarterfinals!!!!

That is exactly why if my school was not in the state play-offs I would never be on AJC.com. I agree with what you wrote in bold print whole heartedly, I’m glad you and your sons are aware of Clarence Thomas and his achievements. Stereotypes are humorous to me for the most part. But what stereotype are you using; assuming I, myself am not black, Or Hispanic or anything besides White?

Just Fair and Coach Cal:

What is the source of your info. regarding the officials for the Walton/MLK game? Simply saying its true does not make it true. The implication of cheating is repugnant. Walton has played hard as a team all season, and fortunately has been successful. Even their coach stated that the team has achieved more than he thought they would at the beginning of the season. The game tonight will be fair, hard fought, and the best team will be victorious. It will not be decided by race, cheating, or Cobb officials!

By msbzzy

November 30, 2007 9:50 AM | Link to this

EP Alum I’m not assuming anything about you, you may be a purple-people eater for all I know. My point is your statement of highly doubting if student/athlete knows who Clarence Thomas is reeks of feeding into 2 stereotypes one based on race and the other based on the fact that he/she is an athlete. To be perfectly honest, if Jay Leno were to hit the streets to ask simple questions such as who are our SC justices, I doubt if the average american could answer correctly—-such is the state of our educational system. Again, good luck to your EP Raiders, MLK, Walton, Tucker, and all the other teams playing tonight!!! Even if they don’t come home with a win, lets all be proud of the players for making it this far. Also, pray there are no injuries.

A predominantly black Valdosta football team loses to mlk and all mlk can do is yell race card. Racism against who? Why would there be racism against one black football team over another predominantly black football team? You are right. I guess I just don’t understand. Has the word racism gotten so watered down that now racism includes hating against a new program over a storied program? Is that what the sick thinking is? If Maxie doesn’t pick me to win he must be racist. If Todd doesn’t pick me to win he must be racist. If a ref makes a legitimate call against my team they must be racist. If the ref misses the call accidentally it has to be racism. The thinking..those racist officials who are sending down racist referees have nothing better to do than make sure mlk doesn’t make it to the state championship…the referees are plotting night and day to make sure mlk doesn’t win. How sad that type of thinking. It is said that those who can’t trust others are those who can be trusted the least. Maybe with regards to racism the same holds true. Those who cry racist the loudest are the ones who struggle with being one the most. Yes racism comes in all colors. The best way to begin ending racism in this world is to stop being a racist. That way there is at least one less.

I will be sitting on Walton’s side tonight because they asked first, but MLK I will be on the cell hollering at you also. Now even though I think both teams are very good, I shared with all of you that MLK impressed “me” the most. Look for me on the 50, it should be a good game.

Now MLK, you never should have shared the word with me because you knew I would put it out there.

Now fair is just fair. My Walton folk, even though I am sitting with you and supporting you tonight, I am still going to my MLK folk get-together afterwards to celebrate with them win or lose. You guys did not offer up any food. I am not with that stadium hot dog thing (smile). The truth is, neither one of you wanted me to Lowndes/Roswell tonight. My aren’t we selfish. I can hear the Roswell excuses now - it would have been better if we hadn’t had to make the looooooonnnnggg ride down I-75 - it would have been better if we’d had our fans if those lousy Lowndes people had only let us play on Saturday. Surely there was a bad call somewhere that should have gone Roswell’s way - hey, remember, after those two touch losses to Hooch and Walton, they “deserve to win”, right coach?

Congrats to Walton for winning at the wire, and to Grayson for a great season.

MLK came, they played, they won, then then the coach cried, Walton received 3 seconds back on the clock and then they won. Now who was the real winner? It was predicted that the officiating would be shady. But this was shady at its epitome. True winners have integrity. Congrats to MLK, the road to victory is hard. You guys have the heart of a LION. Defense going forward we need to tighten up so we will have a total package.

On the Walton side I have to say, your quarterback has an arm from another planet. I was impressed.

First, I want to congratulate MLK. They have a great team and I thought they were the best team Walton played this year. After some of the comments on here I wasn’t sure how good MLK would be but they were very good.

As for the 3 seconds, that’s irrelevant. Walton spiked the ball with 13 seconds left and the refs blew the whistle. The clock ran down to 10 seconds and the refs put it back to 13. Then, Walton ran a play to put the ball in the middle of the field, called time out with 8 seconds left, and then kicked the gamewinning field goal.

To 1-AAAAA Alum: Northside respects all the teams in 1-AAAAA, but fears none of them. We have beaten all of you guys before and we will again soon enough. We’ll worry about that next year though.

On to more important things: it’s on to the Dome to take on Tucker. It should be a tremendous game, two 13-0 teams with great team speed and fierce defenses. This will be Northside’s toughest game by far this season. The Eagle defense, which hasn’t been scored on in the playoffs yet, will need to play it’s best game of the season to beat Tucker. I see a low scoring game, but think Northside will prevail 14-7.

You really need to make a trip South during the regular season. Take your pick….Camden, Lowndes or make a trip to each….it will help give your readers some perspective on how good these programs are….regardless of who they play…the facilities are also 2 of the best (if not the best) in the State. Interesting that the AJC was writing articles earlier this season about there being no football outside of Atlanta. Now, metro Atlanta’s only hope of winning a State football championship in the largest classifications rests in North Gwinnett, Walton (that is really funny), and Tucker. Let me rephrase that, North Gwinnett.

In 5A, either Lowndes or Camden hammers North Gwinnett and/or Walton (I’m still laughing…Walton). We all know how the 4-A script is going to be read, even with Northside playing (and rolling) with a backup QB. Friday at 6pm we will all see a backup QB lead Northside over another overhyped Atlanta team. I remember when MLK, Mays, and others were supposed to be special this season.

As much as many AJC writers hope, there is simply too much talent in Middle GA and South GA schools. The coaching is superior. It is not even close (remember the supposedly foundamentally sound Marist program facing a team of underclassmen at Northside). In 5-A, Lowndes will win another State Championship and nationally ranked Northside will do what nationally ranked Northside always does to poorly coached Atlanta schools. Same state of GA, same results (year after year after year).

Go Eagles! Maxie there is still room on the Northside bandwagon!

By Big Fan of 4A

December 1, 2007 2:18 PM | Link to this

Wow, “NorthSideOwns GA”, you make some interesting assumptions without doing your homework! “Assuming” that everything about your team is superior to everything about Tucker’s team, how do you explain that at least heading to the Dome, Tucker has outscored your team 477-448, and Tucker’s defense has given up 53 points to your 68? One would think that given the FACTS, you should expect this match-up to be a real game, played by two teams loaded with talent, coached by two terrific staffs…Your attitude certainly doesn’t speak well for your team…I’ve heard the Tucker coach lives by Galatians 6:14; what does your coach live by?

“By Northside_Owns_GA Friday at 6pm we will all see a backup QB lead Northside over another overhyped Atlanta team.” Put your attitude back in your pocket, fanboy. If anything, Tucker is the LEAST hyped of any of these teams. Obviously you’ve confused the Tigers with East Paulding or Hab Central. NS Warner Robbins and Tucker are in the semi-finals because they’ve both EARNED it. Nobody doubts that Northside is a very talented team, but they certainly don’t need you spewing a load of fertilizer and disrespecting the opposition. Contrary to the predictions of some of your neighbors of a Bainbridge upset, Tucker took the field and efficiently got the job done. Friday night at 6pm, fans at the Dome will be treated to what could very well be the game of the year. I hope you’ll be there, and you might want to bring along a little something for a nervous stomach. You might need it.

Congrats to the North Gwinnett Bulldogs. The game with the Newnan Cougars was one of the most evenly matched games ever. I’m just wondering if the AJC will EVER give any credit to at least a couple of our region teams. The Cougars were NEVER mentioned in the polls and look what almost happened. If NGHS was ranked so high (#1 most of the season), then Newnan should have been real close. With only 4 starting seniors, watch out next year 5A!

First, let me say to Walton that J.J. Jackson and Billy Burns are two of the most exciting and dynamic players that I have ever seen. AWESOME!!! No one can take that away from them. They deserve to be honored and I wish you two great success in the future.

MLK, you have so….. many weapons (#1, #2, #3, #4, #6, #8, #9, #11, #15, #17, #18, #21, #54, #55, #66, #75, & #76, to name a few). All of these young men are awesome as well. You also deserve to be honored and I wish each of you much success in the future.

However, I still must ask WHO really won this GAME?

Or, had the referees let these two fairly, evenly matched teams play, WHO would have really won the GAME?

Why do I say? Because of this.

STRIKES against MLK:

1) All of the referees were from Cobb County. GHSA allowed it. This infomation was confirmed. Therefore, because of the concern for unfair play calling, the GHSA sent additional referees (6) to stand on the sidelines (4 of which stood on Walton’s side the entire game and 2 were in the booth) supposedly to make sure that no cheating (the officials words) occured.

Now, even though there was no egregious, bad play calling as in the MLK/Valdosta game (16 penalties to 1), the few bad calls made against MLK cost them the game.

2) Walton did not earn their first touchdown. MLK was ahead 13-0 with a little less than 5 minutes left in the 2nd quarter. The referees began calling unnecessary and unfair penalties on MLK which helped Walton advance from one end of the field to the other. This was done in an effort to keep Walton in the game, because it would not have been good to end the first half with MLK leading 13-0. This would make the 2nd half even harder for Walton.

3) Whenever MLK’s momentum was high, the referees would call a penalty to stop their drive (i.e., call an outstanding play back). This happened on more than one occasion.

4) Walton played the entire game pretty much with their QB having considerable time to throw. Where were the holding penalties that many noticed that were not called on Walton? Is Walton that great and MLK that bad? The answer is neither.

5) Fast forward to the 4th quarter. Walton was on fire. The QB was working the sidelines and moving them down the field (very, very impressive with only 1:17 minutes left in the game). However, the clock was working against them. Then the unthinkable happened. The referees called a “defensive holding” penalty on MLK. The clock stopped, Walton booed, the referees put 3 seconds back on the clock making it 13, and Walton is now on the 23 yard line (field goal territory no doubt). Walton runs the ball to the 20 yard line in the center of the field. The kicker had missed two field goals earlier in the game, but now has a third try at redeeming himself, and he did just that. Now the problem is not that he made the field goal, the problem is that the referees interferred, stopped the clock, called a crucial penalty on MLK which would go on to determine the final outcome of the game because had they not, the clock would have run out on Walton and MLK would have won. That could not happen and thanks to the referees, it did not.

So, again I ask, who really WON the GAME?

There are 3 answers to this question.

1) Walton’s side of the story if you listen to them. 2) MLK’s side of the story if you listen to them. 3) The HONEST TRUTH, which can only be seen on the videotape of the game. Request one and then you be the judge.

Irregardless, the final score: Walton 20 and Domeward bound/MLK 19 and gone home. Thank you both for giving your fans and supporters a great game.

Congratulations Walton Raiders. We are looking forward to a WIN in the dome.

Lowndes lost to Harrison, who Walton eliminated from the playoffs this year.

I assume the penalty you are referring to in the first half was the personal foul call on the kick-off when an MLK player hit a Walton player who had called fair catch. That’s a personal foul. The referees called defensive holding because one of the MLK players grabbed J.J. Jackson when J.J. was going past him down the sidelines to catch a TD pass. Smart play by the MLK player to prevent the TD and good call by the refs. Additionally, the clock didn’t stop because of the defensive holding, the clock stopped because of the incomplete pass. You either don’t know the rules or are weren’t paying attention. Then, the referees put 3 seconds back on the clock when the clock ran after Walton spiked the ball. Finally, the kick was attempted with 8 seconds left so the 3 seconds didn’t matter anyway. You should watch the game and not spread untrue information.

I would like to start off by congratulating all of the Georgia teams that advanced to the playoffs. My team, the Grayson Rams, played the Camden County Wildcats. It all went well, until Camden scored their first touchdown. After that, their fans started to get cocky and go to the Grayson side to taunt the fans. There was no need for that and it just showed what little class they had. Several times the Camden County high school administration had to remove people, grown men and women, from the Grayson Stands. Camden played well and the fans could have celebrated that on their side. Grayson’s boys were faced with trash talk from the Camden players, fans, and coaches. The players threatend Grayson by saying they would leave them hospitalized. When the boys were shaking hands after the game, already in tears, one of the Camden players approached a player on our team and said, ” Man ya’ll suck, you ain’t nothin but a bunch of white boy’s.” and our Grayson player responded with a handshake and three simple word’s, “Good game man.” I am not going to turn this into a racial matter but when GROWN men and women are making teenage boys drown in tears, there should be something done about that. Since Christmas is coming up soon i know one thing that everyone in Camden County should be asking for, and that is class.

By Camden Fan

December 1, 2007 10:36 PM | Link to this

GRAYSON I’m speechless. I don’t know if that really happened or not but I know that Grayson didn’t exactly exude class themselves. Taunting went on before the game. When coming into town Grayson talked trash. I don’t know if racial slurs were thrown out but that is unacceptable. Apologies go out to whoever had to endure that. Anyway I don’t think you would be bringing this up if you guys had won. Just pick it up and try next year. Don’t be bitter. Camden has definitely had their share of seasons that ended in heartbreak. Show some REAL class and just come back stronger than ever next season.

First off, thanks to all administrative staff at Camden Co. for making every attempt to be accommodating. Soon after the game began, fans from Camden started coming over into the middle of Grayson’s crowd attempting to taunt and intimidate fans, students and players. The part that would make any parent sick was watching Camden fans heckling the players from Grayson telling them that they “suck”, were “overrated” as a team and that they needed to take their “sorry a**es home”. I may be able to understand that taking place if Grayson players or fans were disrespectful but to stand at the fence and trash talk to teenage boys that are doing their best to hold back tears of devastation is completely inexcusable. The Camden team clearly came to play and I congratulate them on advancing to the dome. The purpose of belonging to a team is to first learn life lessons on teamwork, dedication and sportsmanship. A much stronger statement could have been made by shaking hands of your opponents or hugging the neck of a boy that will never play football after graduating and telling them that they had a great year. A true winner displays integrity regardless of victory or defeat. To the few Camden Co fans/parents/players with character that came out and supported the program for the love of football, congrats and good luck. The rest of Camden Co fans/parents/players who continue to display stereotypical ignorance - try winning with class next time.

Are we speaking of high school football teams or bank statements? Grayson & standards of english made a comment that gave only one side of a two sided discussion. And why wouldn’t they? They are very disappointed fans. However it is unfair to my Camden High to illustrate that our players initiated ( not responded to) “trash talk”. Why did you not mention the coach for Grayson that was warned by the officials to not “interact” with the camden student atheletes? Am I excusing any behavior that is not flatering of Camden? Of course not… With that said, every action has a reaction - so does that mean politics of football wishes to compare bank financials with that of the trailer trash of Camden? What a statement of class! It will always be regretable if a great team effort shares the spotlight with antics in the stands. With that said come see us in the dome- Go Cats!

took me a while to get use to the brown sand, but loved jekyl island. we stayed for a night and explored a little. great game camden, you have a very physical defence too, they were great. your offence, well, not much better then ours, with the acception of your QB. i thought it might be over after the first play of grayson defence, when #16 put major on his back. not so! ive only bragged on our defence in these blogs, never saying how i feel about our offence. there were reasons for that. anyhoo, you guys earned 15 of 22 points from our offence, so my boy went home feeling pretty proud. in his eyes, you earned 7 and they earned 7. who cares about the rest. if you think about it, he has to think that way. your defence earned 15 points! wow, they should be proud too. when i walked into the camden stadium, i was saying, what a great place. big, clean, high quality sound, etc. then………….the game started. i sat on the 50 yard line. and i was only assuming, the the huge family of camden fans that came over and took up 25 or more of our seats on the 45 yard line, just wanted better seats then they could get on their home side. not so. im sure they were their to start trouble. even the small children in their group were being trouble makers. we almost left, after the group of boys from the other side came over and was wanting to to fight with out student group. we grayson fans came as a family, we brought our babies and small children, why did you even have to bring that crap to our side? even your police officers that were over there breaking up the trouble and trying to send your rude teens back were they belonged, said they were sorry to us. they said they knew it would be all over the papers about their behavior. next time, you guys have visitors from far away, keep your trouble makers on the other side. how wierd is it anyway to section off an area for your overflow of fans on the oponents side? couldnt have put your band over there or something? at halftime, while standing in line to get an order of fries for our baby, your teens again pushed their way in front of us, and were laughing about it. this continued the whole time we were in line. of course, we never got our fries for our baby, because of all the line breaking. by the time we got to the front, they were sold out, and they game had started. yes, if we would have won the game, i would still have come back from my mini vacation and told my story about these poor sports. why wouldnt i , it still happened, win or lose. i was convenced by you bloggers, that we were coming to a classy town. i was glad, because around here, there is a lack of it at times. you would expect that living in a big city such as atlanta. im still in shock about your hospitality not the lose of the game. oh, were did all the people come from? we went driving around after the game, and didnt see teh over crowded subdivisions that we have around here. you guys must be really spread out.

no i didnt proof read this, so if there are any typo errrors, i hope you can read through them. thanks for the game. our junior and sophmore players got some really good expierience for next year.

“By NSHS FAN Correction for: By HSballfan. Bainbridge is on the Ga/FLA border. NSWR is in middle GA about 4-hours away. We are not neighbors!” You’re a lot closer to them than we are LOL. That was tongue in cheek… you know how we are here in the big city: anything the other side of the airport is “South Georgia.” Still, if Northside WERE hanging around 4A next season, you’d be in the same region with Bainbridge. One might make the argument that qualifies you as “neighbors”… possibly even cousins. :) The final four at the Dome should be a good one. For the first time in three weeks, we can leave the long johns in the closet and enjoy playing indoors. Is Ware County that good or did Hab Central get hypnotized on that long ride down there? We weren’t terribly surprised that you guys kicked Rome around, but the Ware score was a bit of a shocker.

Score, our Grayson football coach that almost got ejected from the game did not start the hassling, the crowd was telling the boys they were “overrated” and that they “sucked” and he just responded to it because the boy’s are like his own sons. If we were “overrated” why did we even make it that far and hold you throughout the whole first half? If we played to our ability, we would have crushed you.

lol sorry didn’t finish. I would love to take a trip to Grayson a.k.a. Pleasantville and see what’s it like in your “perfect” world. Get out of your bubble!!! They were rude. Please get over it. Have you never been disrespected in life???!!! SORRY SORRY A THOUSAND TIMES SORRY. This is the last I will write about it.

T0 sportmanship 101: Why do you even have that name? You’re a bad loser. I never heard Tift County and East Coweta saying anything. I wonder why!! Maybe because they actually have class. I wish you would’ve “crushed” us then you could be playing in the dome instead of us!! I admitted that you had a good team and so did Camden’s coach. He was saying that he was threatened by Grayson’s big play ability and defense. It’s over!! Move on!! Why are you all still on ajc??!!

To: HSballfan, thanks for the understanding concerning distance between Bainbridge and Warner Robins. Hey, we are only an 1 3/2 hours away from downtown Atlanta. Now, for that game with Rome. Rome is good but they run the same offense that both of our cross town rivals do. Therefore, it was easy to prepare for them. They have a RB name Whately who in the fastest guy I have seen. One error and he is in the end zone. Don’t know much about Ware County. We have never played them. We did play number 2 Evans from their region. They passed a lot. Ware does the same I heard. I am glad Tucker is not a passing team. We play better against non-passing teams.

Tucker will pass occasionally. Three TD passes in the NW Whitfield game but that was a season high. The thing that makes Tucker's rushing offense difficult to contain is its quickness and diversity... impossible to key on any one player and Tucker has five or six backs that play interchangeably. I'm guessing a low scoring game, one mistake or big play could decide it.

what do you mean, why are we still on the ajc? if we go away, it would be dead here. everyone that had to put up with your fans on the visitor side, has the right to tell all. after all, you were the one on here a couple days ago saying how wonderful it would be for us there. had you not led us to believe that, maybe some of us would not be so shocked.

no one here has their mouth hanging open fron the lose. we have lose before. we lost by a larger margine to norcross, then came back a couple weeks later and tore them up. so whos to say we couldnt do the same to camden? point being, i still have alot to say, well maybe. if i do, i will!

Tucker will pass occasionally. Three TD passes in the NW Whitfield game but that was a season high. Tucker's rushing game is so diverse, it's impossible to key on one guy, so the offense has been able to keep opposing defenses off balance without having to throw a lot. The defenses will decide this one though... a lot of pressure on Northside's QB to keep Tucker from overplaying to contain Tijuan.

SCORE: It’s not about a financial statement or ethnicity. It’s about CHARACTER. When I didn’t have money, I made up for it with character. No one knew I was broke. My economic reality still has me working hard for a paycheck but wisdom and character makes it multiply. Camden Co will never get another first chance to make a great impression.

Congratulations to ALL our Georgia High School Football Players for an exciting 2007 season. Win, lose or draw your all great kids. Nothing makes me prouder than to hear a college game announcer mention our kids from any Georgia High School. I’m not a fan of Grayson’s offensive play calling. It has been our weak point all season long. We loose 5 yards on a play, call a time out and run the same dumb a** play to the same short side of the field. Any Coach would exploit an opponent’s shallow playbook. Getting as far as we did was nothing short of a miracle on behalf of our Grayson player’s determination to succeed. Thank you for our most exciting season yet Grayson!

As a Northside Eagle fan, I would like to congratulate the Rome football team, and the many fans who traveled with them last Friday night. Your team fought hard until the very end, and demonstrated true sportsmanship throughout. Your fans leaving the stands at the end of the game to greet all of the players was real class. You should be proud of your team and fans. I wish you luck in the future.

south georgia has two teams left in the playoffs, gwinnett has two left. i have gained respect from the camden team, not so much the visitor side fans but the team was great. it was nice to have some comp. besides brookwood and norcross. believe me most of our other games were blow outs. south georgia seems to be as comp. with their football as gwinnett. there are just more 5a schools here, to talk about. you keep playing hard camden, you have set the standard in play for us next year. maybe if it happens again, we will have a better experience in your house. so, with that said, i now have to pull for the left side of the bracket! go camden! or n.gwinnett

Walton/MLK - Walton’s star defensive end, Chase Thomas, was held the entire game by MLK’s line, sometimes being blatantly tackled, but the refs did not call it. With time running out, MLK’s players laid on Walton’s players preventing them from getting back to the huddle and keeping the clock running. The refs should have called delay of game, but didn’t. The 3 seconds added to the game clock were the result of Walton having spiked the ball with 13 seconds left, and the play clock continuing to run after the spike. The refs did not decide this game. It was decided on the field in a hard fought game between to very good football teams. It was one of the most exciting games I have seen. I can’t wait to see Walton get its revenge against N. Gwinnett, a team they should have beaten the first game of the season.

Congratulations to Lowndes County. It was a tremendous experience for our program despite losing. You can actually smell Football when you arrive at the Concrete Palace. There's not much to say when you get punched in the mouth. Our kids punched back but there is a reason Lowndes has one 2 of the last 3 State Championships. There is something about "accomplished" programs and how the players react to one another in the aftermath. Players and Coaches from RHS have a tremendous respect for both Peachtree Ridge and Lowndes.

Now for you Hooch Dad and your “unaccomplished” program, we’re glad your victory over Roswell in the 6th game of the year was your Season Highlite. Hope you enjoy your bus rides to Gwinnett County next season in Region 7AAAAA and take the chip on your shoulder with you.

URGENT NEWS BULLETIN!!! A “train”, carrying the Thomas County Central football team, derailed in the Georgia Dome. Early reports indicate some Gators, who happened to be visiting from Waycross, had much to do with the incident. Thomas County Central fans have been noticeably absent, AND ARE NOT AVAILABLE FOR COMMENT. Prior to the derailment those same fans were saying how “their train” could overun Gators or Eagles with no difficulty. Stay tuned for further reports IF those same fans make themselves available.

UPDATE TO NEWS BULLETIN!!! At the half of the Tucker-Northside football game, Tucker Tiger fans were very concerned about possibly having to travel a long distance to participate in the AAAA State Championship football game next Friday night. When Conrad Nix heard of their dilemma, he dispatched his number one (he wears number 11) “travel agent” to resolve their problem. As a result of a 24-0 “beatdown” in the second half, the potential travel worries are over. When last seen, the Tigers were leaving the Georgia Dome, with their tails between their legs FOR A SHORT DRIVE BACK TO TUCKER. The Northside Eagles will now make a much shorter drive to Waycross to meet the Gators, the two elite teams in AAAA.

How in the ** did North Hall make it to the semis? Down by 28 late in the 3rd quarter, they didn’t throw a pass. Does the quarterback have a broken arm? If so, they should have had another one ready. That was a disgrace to “run up the white flag” in the 3rd quarter.

Tucker wasn’t much better. They threw the ball 4 times during the game and tried to sit on their lead. Now they are sitting at home. One dimensional teams are a joke.
