No turkey for Thanksgiving, just crow

Darryl Maxie

I am like that character in Forrest Gump, Benjamin Buford Blue, the one more commonly known as Bubba. If ever there was a way to prepare shrimp, Bubba could run it down until he had shrimp oozing through your pores.

So it is with me and crow.

It is with the taste of crow fresh upon my tongue that, undaunted, I venture back into the shark-infested waters of the second round of the high school football playoffs.

I said North Cobb would win in Class AAAAA and Fayette County wouldn’t in Class AAAA. Then, I had a wonderfully prepared crow souffle as I looked forward to Fayette County’s next game against Bainbridge and North Cobb’s next game sometime in the fall of 2008. That being a little far into the future to worry about now, I came back to the Fayette County game.

First, let’s dispense with the formalities. Fayette County’s going to win Friday. The Tigers were impressive in their completely-unforeseen-despite-winning-every-other-game victory over Baldwin last week. Certainly, they have more than enough left to take down Bainbridge. I would predict the rest of their playoff run right now, but maybe it’s better to wait until I’ve finished off the last of the crow dogs in the freezer.

Let’s instead turn our attention to the championship rematch between Roswell and, uh … Peachtree Ridge.

Yes, that Peachtree Ridge.

The one I doubted in favor of No. 1-ranked North Cobb, which has probably turned its uniforms in by now. The one I said would not once again run the table from Region 7-AAAAA’s fourth seed. The team I said everybody would see coming a mile away, knowing what it was capable of, the element of surprise gone for 10 games and an offseason of heightened expectations.

Amazing what crow aftertaste will do for a man, isn’t it? Peachtree Ridge will win Friday. There is no way I can doubt Bill Ballard’s Lions, not with visions of crow-flavored gum, crow tarts, and crow a la mode dancing in my head. Does it even matter who the Lions are playing? What’s that, you say? The other team is a champion, too? Champion, schmampion.

As far as I’m concerned, Peachtree Ridge is Bad, Bad Leroy Brown … baddest man in the whole (you know what) town and I have to say that because the song was popularized by a man named Croce, which is pronounced Crow-chee. This cannot possibly be a crow-incidence.

The last time I was right about a Peachtree Ridge loss was when Grayson beat the Lions at home. Then, of course, I had to get carried away with the feeling. I picked Grayson to beat Norcross shortly thereafter.

Three points, however, is not usually enough to beat Norcross, and it wasn’t nearly enough on that day. And now, here they are, about to play again. For the fourth time in two years. Grayson hasn’t won once.

I picked against Norcross twice. And each time the Blue Devils won decisively. So never mind the fact that the Rams looked like world-beaters against Chattahoochee last week. This game is Norcross’ world, and Grayson — blessed with speed and skill as it is — is just trying to get a nut. The Rams are 0-for-Norcross and 0-for-Norcross they will remain.

The only way to make sure this happens, of course, is to send the Blue Devils word that Grayson has been picked to win the game. By the time they figure out what the real deal is, I’ll be able to hide the rest of my crow supplies safely in a dog’s mouth somewhere.

M.L. King takes on Valdosta Friday. Back when Valdosta was falling on its face and going 1-9 last season — the worst season in its history — I told anybody who would listen that Valdosta would return much sooner than later. Now, here they are in the second round of the Class AAAAA playoffs and on metro Atlanta’s doorstep.

That having been said, MLK will win at home, if for no other reason than if they don’t, I’ll have several new friends to help me wash down the rest of these crow-kebabs I’ve accumulated. Fat chance of that happening, right?

Right. Because if one thing has proven true, lo these many years I’ve been in the prognostication business, it’s this: Predict well and the world laughs with you. Predict poorly, and you eat crow alone.

Those predicted against will chortle when you were wrong and they were right, but when the house inevitably wins — and I think we know who the house is here — you stand a better chance of finding Hoffa than finding them.

So, is it crow soup yet? Yep, and you out there who chortled amiss need to come get some.

well, you got most of that right, i say go Valdosta! get those trouble makers out. you really think they can win, without their suspended players? were they starters?

hope grayson puts that taste back in your mouth. things are different with grayson, but like last week, the hooch kids had their funny little bashing song on 95.5 the beat all day, and the grayson football players heard it, it only makes them play harder to be picked as the underdogs. so thank you. ill pass the word around.

From everything the TCC fans have been saying for the last few weeks, I suppose the other 15 teams still left in AAAA may as well call it quits. I would prefer to wait and play the games myself. I have a feeling strange things may happen along the way. For instance, I haven’t given up on the Eagles of Northside, in spite of losing Marques Ivory. So, TCC fans, just relax and enjoy the ride…at least as far as your Train will take you.

Typical Atlanta writer, giving no credit at all to the Coastal Empire area schools. You obiously haven’t seen Savannah Christian play this year. They only by two points to the mighty Charlton County without their star running back, so I doubt a trip to Thomasville will phase them. And ECI is the number one team in the state, yet you think Dooly County will beat them at home. How about a little bit more respect and research on your part Maxie.

BlueDevilBaby I guess Peachtree Ridge was just lucky when they beat Norcross. Norcross had less than 50 yards at halftime. Also Mr. Maxie we liked when you picked against us because that made the players play even harder. So this week I guess you are going to jump on the bandwagon and pick us to win.

Maxie, I have taken a look at the teams East Coweta have met on the field and needless to say with the exception of Newnan they hd yet met any competion after their loss in the season opener, up until they met Newman they pretty much went unscathed, yes they beat the Jaguars, but the Wildcats are not the Jaguars. I think that it will be a good game, East Coweta is a young team on the rise, I will give them that. If the Wildcats avoid the turnovers committed against Tift, this will be one for a friday. I don’t see the Cats giving the same performance as last friday. The passing atttack surpised many socuts I am sure, since Tift was determined to stop the run, the Wing T is difficult to contain when you can run and pass, I epxect a good game from both squads. The Wildcats region is what it is, some folks ahve to deal with it, remember they did go 15 and 0 and won a State Title coming out of the same region. It’s not the region it’s the heart of the kids on the field. Maxie come and visit us some time.

Some of these predictions are wrong! Darrly Maxies always picking the same teams to win and lose. Why don’t you actually watch these games instead of guessing to who you think will win. Maybe if you had some information on these teams you could possibly get a prediction right. Chamblee, Brookwood, Camden County, Shaw, and Mays all have chances to win this friday. Just because a team is ranked higher does not mean they are better. Im sure you learned that last week with the so called number 1 team North Cobb! So next time you make a crazy prediction know that you are 100% sure. You have been counting our team out this whole season and we have made it to the second round.

Well finally someone with reason answers the bell…THANK YOU Darryl for picking East Paulding over Mays!…You at least are showing common sense!

East will NOT let you down either…They are pumped and ready!…The stands will be full, the bells ringing and our cannon (REAL RAIDERS HAVE A CANNON AND A SHIP)will be firing all night long as the “Beast from the East” kids keep lighting up that scoreboard!…

This has been an interesting week and myself and several other posters have taken a lot of negative flak from Mays supporters (or folks climing to be Mays fans)for calling things like they are.

This is all over and we are all celebrating with family today for Thanksgiving and then we let the teams play!

I wish both teams the best of luck and want to see a hard fought, CLEAN PLAYED game. All we ask is that after the game the Mays players have the class to take the field and shake the East Paulding players hands, congratulate East Paulding on its victory and wish them luck next friday against Thomas County Central!…

To Wake Up: You meant to say, Camden having the BEST DEFENSE in the state, in the 5A CLASS. There is one team in 4A with a better defensive stat, Tucker (3.3 pts allowed). Don’t mention the classification difference, because the region that Camden plays is real weak… 4A top 10 teams be at top in Camden’s region…look at round one, the other 3 teams was drag, not even a score. So if you meant to say 5A, it’s all good…

Just in case you didn’t know, Camden 5.0 pts allowed, against VERY weak region schedule…East Coweta wins this one…Maxie, you got this one right…

Like many of the people who blogged above, I disagree with your pick of Valdosta losing to MLK. Although MLK is a good team, they haven’t played the level of competition that Valdosta (beat the # 1 team in Utah and the # 3 team in Florida this year) has played this year. Both teams are speedy and execute will so this game will come down to coaching which I feel Valdosta has the edge in this area (thye have a bigger play book than MLK which is kinda vanilla).

Michael - I have few illusions, but I am a fan. While team, coaches, and most of the fans would disagree, I see EPHS as an overachieving team this year. We had three 2nd half comebacks, one with 8 seconds remaining, to finish 10-0. We should be delighted to turn our perfect season and home field advantage into one more win and a quarter final game against the invincible Yellow Jackets. Not looking forward to the long drive, I’ve been to Thomasville, but maybe we’ll win the coin toss!

MLK certainly has the talent to win over Valdosta. They can throw and they can run. That is a proven fact! However, if they were to lose tonight, I would have to agree that it would only be because they were out-coached, but not out-played. I have watched a lot of teams play this year and kept up with them all; however, MLK whether they have started out ahead or behind seems to come out on top in the end. These young men love the sport, love and respect their coaches and teammates, are extremely proud of the school name that they represent and it has given them momentum and the desire to win. Valdosta certainly has a great history, but they will have to pay a visit to the “Lion’s Den.” It proves to be a great and exciting game.

By Just Fair

November 23, 2007 12:58 PM | Link to this

Mays,

Wishing you the best tonight in the playoffs. Unfortunately my nephew is not starting because he is one of the three that was suspended this game, but if you stay focused and want it bad enough, you can still win. He admitted that he was wrong for clearing the bench and getting involved in trying to break up the fight, but I do support him in standing up and defending his teammates simply because Cedar Shoals started the incidents and Mays just was not smart enough not to fall into their trap. Cedar Shoals’ thinking was “we could win this game if we can either hurt Mays’ key players or get some of best players thrown out of the game.” Well, it worked. Win and the suspended players will return.

By EastBeast

November 23, 2007 2:46 PM | Link to this

Mays - Sorry you’re not at full strength, but bring your best game and all your fans. We’re tired of seeing half empty stands across the field. TCC - You’ve got a good bracket with only the NSWR-Tucker winner in the final. But the remaining teams aren’t Dutchtown, or Meadowcreek, or Lee County, or Colquitt County either. So far you’ve only proven you’re the best of those weak South GA schools living on memories of the last millenium. Lowndes got shutout by Harrison and Valdosta got stomped by Brookwood. You’re next. Go Whitewater and MLK, and turn loose the Beast EPHS!

By Dave

November 23, 2007 4:21 PM | Link to this

Camden’s defense will be fine, its their offense which is scoring less than 21 points outside their region. Major Herron is a beast, but he’s all they have. The offensive line just isn’t playing as well as they should. Camden runs a lot of misdirection plays and by the time Major hands the ball off, there are three defenders in the back field. This will be a defensive game on both sides. Camden has no kicking game. I mean the kid has a monster leg but has missed at least five extra points this season. The game Camden lost in OT was because Camden couldn’t hit the extra point. If the O-Line can’t step up, it’ll take a defensive touchdown or two to win the game.

When the regions and classifications reflect realignment next year, will you still be a rabid 6-AAAA fan? Or will you continue to cheer for Marist and St. Pius when they are in different classifications and/or regions?

Just wondering. Go Rome and East Paulding, because I’m tired of hearing about the greatness of Mighty 6-AAAA!

And go Habersham Central Raiders.

Thanks to MLK for shutting-up the Valdosta bloggers. Because of their bloggers everyone rejoices when Valdosta loses. Let’s see now…Valdosta had two trips to metro-Atlanta this year and two very long bus rides home. I suggest that Valdosta only play below the gnat-line opponents if they want to continue padding their “world’s greatest program”.

Coffee bloggers are not in the same irritating class as Valdosta’s bloggers but, sorry, you are guilty-by-association being from region 1. Thanks to Newnan for getting rid of the 3rd team from region 1. Lowndes will be taken care of next week and we will not have to listen to the region 1 folks again until next year.

Of course the statement I made about the Camden Wildcats being lucky to be in the play-offs was simply a reflection of the lack of respect the Wildcats recieve from the AJC. We do not worry about predictions, we simply play the game by giving 100 percent all the time. Games are played and won on the field; therefore, Maxie, I recon you do a grerat job predicting the outcome of games but somehow the Wildcats find a way to win. We will continue to be humble and play as hard as we can.

My earlier posting did not appear on the blog. The statement I made concerning the Camden Wildcats being lucky to be in the play-offs was simply a sarcastic statement since we were predicted to loose to East Coweta. East Coweta did a great job against our Wildacts but we seem to find a way to win. You have to tip your hat to the East Coweta Indian because they played the game with class. The wildcats will continue to be humble and give 100 percent each and every time they walk on the field. The prediction that the wildcats would loose to East Coweta was simply that, a prediction. Hopefully we will continue to play hard because I am certain Grayson is a very good football team. Good luck to all teams in the third round of the state play-offs.

Mays High came to play football and that’s just what they did. They had good team speed and exhibited an imaginative game plan. They displayed good sportsmanship and in the end they met East Paulding in the middle of the field and shook hands. Their band was a totally different story. They were an embarrassment to their school and to the Atlanta school system. They should be ashamed of themselves.

hmm, can anybody say GRAYSON DEFENCE! this momma had it right. want rub it in norcross face, because they beat us once this year, but to any that may remember, i said graysons defence had changed for the better! the first touchdown norcross made, was from a ball stripped from our running back. so graysons defence allowed only 10 of the 16 points scored by the norcross offence! oh, and two of our touchdowns, was scored by our defencive playas! im sorry, yes im overwhelmed, i still cant believe it! just a proud defence playas mom!

Great Game EP Raiders, two well matched clubs and as predicted the team with the fewer mistakes came out on top. Good sportsmanship all the way around by the teams and coaching staffs.

Mays BAND: Can a Mays fan please explain the amazing display of disrespect that was exhibited. It has to be put on the Band Director. The band played not to the home stands but to the away stands and after completing they left and did not have the decency to even watch the EPHS band from the sidelines before leaving. That Atlanta School District should seriously think about handing down a reprimand to the school and specifically the band director for the shame brought about by their blatant disregard for tradition and classless act.

Thank you football teams for playing a clean hard fought game even with the additional pressure of previous events. Go Raiders, next stop TCC.

Well the Blog was fun, interesting, controversial, and a bit “in the gutter” the last few days. But after all the “trash talkin’”, hype and dare I say “BS”…LOL!…a football game was played in THE BONEYARD!!

The Mays team was there early, already on the field at 4:30 in the afternoon checking everything out. To the Mays team credit, on this night, they came to play football. This is a team with size, speed, and a quarterback that could throw a looooong acurate pass. He just needed a few receivers who could catch!

Mays scored first on a field goal and then the REAL RAIDERS took over!

Final score East Paulding 21 / Mays 3!

After the game the Mays players took the field and shook hands with the East Paulding players, again hats off to them for a hard fought game, tonight they should raise their heads high!

Also Mays had a player hurt in the 2nd half who was taken off the field by ambulance…Our hearts and prayers go out to him and his family as we all hope it was not serious…nothing was said after the game and nothing seems to be in the AJC about him.

A final note the Mays band should be ashamed and embarrassed by the way they acted this night. They played facing their fans stand and not the East Paulding Stands as they should have and then finished and LEFT THE FIELD without staying to watch the East Paulding Band play! This is nothing short of complete DISRESPECT for the other band!…A VERY CLASSLESS ACT! All the time they were saying over the intercom how they were the FINEST and BEST band in The City of Atlanta!!!…

Anyway good game and bring on TCC…!

Does the AJC intend to give Chamblee High School football any more respect and a bit more black and white…EVER??? What do they have to do to get anything beyond the last page of the high school football playoffs round up? I have reviewed the AJC all season long and have seen so many other metro Atlanta teams get plenty of ink, well deserved but no more so than this high school. I have seen a lot of high school football over the years and I can say with conviction and no hesitation that the game that Chamblee and Stephens County played last night (three and a quarter hours long) was one of the most memorable and well played ones ever that went virtually unnoticed by the AJC. The play calling by both coaches, the roller coaster drama, the ballsy calls to end the first half, the fourth quarter and the overtime were top notch, and the talent, heart and gritty determination by both teams should’ve been a featured article for today’s paper. Perhaps deadlines, perhaps bias, maybe aliens, most likely the lack of regard and interest for one of the best academic public high schools in this country prevented any more notice for this game…What a shame and an embarrassment for this flagship school.

Mistermak— I certainly do not believe in throwing blows about our football program. I am glad you know who I am. Some people are not afraid of putting their name on e-mails regardless of the situation. I am a huge humble Camden Wildcat Football Fan. The earlier posting which stated “Camden is lucky to be in the play-offs” was simply a sarcastic statement since Maxi and the AJC never give Camden Credit. Also Thanks for the rude comment concerning my ability to coach baseball. I am proud to be a Wildcat and I am certainly proud to be a former baseball and football coach for the Camden Wildcats. I would be more than glad to provide positive comments to you if you simply had enough intestinal fortitude to acknowlwedge who you are. I have nothing against anyone, isn’t that an attitide that a adult would have instead of a child? I hope you have a wonderful week and please pull for our Wildcats. To JC597: Yes, next year and the years after that I will be a region 6 fan and a DeKalb county HS football fan, so you need not wonder any more. As far as Marist and SPX, my guess is that Marist will play up 4A and SPX is going down to 3A, finally Buford will have someone to contend with, I will support both programs. As far as region 6 being the best this year, that’s been proven with the victories in the playoffs. Yes, beat downs in your region 8, first round…

Devil lover- I knew Norcross would have a hard time beating Grayson for a 4th time. They are just too good of a team and the odds were against you. I think both North and Norcross would be winners going to the Dome had you been 2nd seed.See ya next year without your big receivers.

By HSballfan

Considering the quotes I read today in the AJC from Alan Chadwick, it looks pretty certain that Marist will decide to drop back to AAA. I don’t know if that means an end to the Tucker/Marist rivalry. There’s a good chance that Chamblee and Tucker will be in the same AAAA region again. I’m hoping next year’s setup will allow Dekalb football teams to play at least a couple of games outside the region. I’ve not cared for the 100% region schedule the past two years, especially with Mays and SW Dekalb not having to play each other.

So why give him a look. He knows absolutely nothing about any team outside of the Atlanta metro area. My apologies to you I should not have been so crude!!

To Grayson fan: of course there is nothing about us in your newspaper. Even when we won it all there wasn’t much about the wildcats. We are just that team from nowhere, Ga that isn’t even suppose to be in the playoffs according to Mr. Maxie. We will see you on Friday and I expect it will be a hard fought game. Steve, Nice of you to welcome Grayson. I am sure the game will be a memorable one. I know Camden has a rich tradition and numerous regional titles. Only one point of reference for the teams playing is the only loss for Camden this year was to Hooch in a close one. Playoffs, Grayson dismantled Hooch at home. But this is playoff football and Grayson has a long drive ahead of them while the Wildcats rests comfortably waiting on the Rams for their next dinner. I have been talking Gwinnett superiority in numerous posts, this game should be the one to shut me up if Grayson happens to lose until North Gwinnett wins it all.

Peachtree Ridge got robbed!!!! Chicken refs ran after that crappy call. Hope they sleep well at night knowing they hosed all those kids. No matter anyways, neither Roswell or Peachtree has what it takes to go to the dome.

I still stick with my prediction, a Gwinnett team wins it all—-Only leaves Grayson and North Gwinnett to make it a reality. Grayson who? Can not believe it all of you can you? It may happen! Grayson vs. North Gwinnett is a long shot, looking to next week if Grayson wins will be another long road trip to Lowndes, if they win. Two long trips and wins?? Lowndes and North Gwinnett more likely to happen. But me being the driver for the Grayson Bandwagon driver, have to keep my foot on the gas and push for the dome. Good luck all!!! Will post this in other comment areas as well. Comon Grayson fan—keep the hope alive!!! OFFENSE wins games, but DEFENSE wins Championships!!!!

Maxie:

Like many of the people who blogged above, I disagree with your pick of Valdosta losing to MLK. Although MLK is a good team, they haven’t played the level of competition that Valdosta (beat the # 1 team in Utah and the # 3 team in Florida this year) has played this year. Both teams are speedy and execute will so this game will come down to coaching which I feel Valdosta has the edge in this area (thye have a bigger play book than MLK which is kinda vanilla).

You obviously underestimated the MLK offense. You obviously have never seen them play. They do a lot of things and do them all well. You guys should stop assuming you know something when you clearly have no clue. What is you pick this time?

It will be one to remember. Yea that loss to Chatahoochie was a tough one. I believe they were looking ahead to the next week to Aiken, SC. That is the team that broke their regular season streak last year in a tight one. If we had a decent kicking game we might have won that one. And it didn’t help us that their head coach and defensive coordinator were assistants under Coach Herron. It was like they were in the huddle with them boys. Good luck and Go Camden!!

This rivalry with Roswell is going to last a long long time. Next time the Lions face the Hornets we will be coming with a load of payback.
