4 questions, including who will win Grayson-Brookwood

Who wins the Grayson-Brookwood game?

For the record, I have been on the Grayson bandwagon from the start of the season. I also have been one of Brookwood’s biggest doubters. I even picked the Broncos to win less than six games.

But unlike a stubborn coach who continues to run dive plays up the middle with no success, I’m not afraid to make an adjustment.

I’m taking the Broncos, but still believe they’re out in the second round of the playoffs.

Kenny Miles is on top of the MVP race, and coach Mark Crews is my Coach of the Year right now.

Should be a dandy.

What’s your biggest coaching pet peeve?

I do not understand how coaches choose not take a shot at the end zone on the last play before half, even if you’re ahead.

I’ve seen it several times in high school games this season, where coaches elect to allow the clock to run out rather than throw a Hail Mary. I realize high school quarterbacks might lack the arm strength to attempt a deep ball from anywhere beyond midfield. But doesn’t tossing one deep have more potential of getting lucky than kneeling down?

I don’t buy the fear of an interception being returned for a score, either. How many successful Hail Mary’s have you seen? Now, how many have you seen intercepted and returned for touchdowns?

Whose offense is worse: Georgia’s or Georgia Tech’s?

At first glance, I would have said the Yellow Jackets are much worse. But there’s really not much difference between the two.

Georgia is tied for 55th in the nation in total offense, averaging 28.14 points per game.

Georgia Tech is 57th, averaging 28.13 points.

Still, I’ll take Stafford over Bennett any day.

Am I the worst high school fantasy football player ever?

Yes.

Am I still giving it 110 percent? Absolutely.

Am I Meadowcreek? Only time will tell.

Want to prove yourself worthy of taking on staff writers David Purdum and Kurt Aschermann, as well as 680 The Fan’s Play-by-Play voice Karl Werl in a game of high school fantasy football?

Post your team —- 1 QB, 2 RBs, 2 WR, 1 defensive team —- on Purdum’s blog on ajc.com/sports/content/sports/highschool before 2 p.m. Thursday. (Look for the cool-looking bald guy on the left side of the page to find the blog.)

Feel free to e-mail your team to dpurdum@ajc.com or kaschermann@ajc.com as well.

You can use any combination of players from across the state, while Aschermann and Purdum will use only Gwinnett County players. Because, as everyone knows, Gwinnett plays the best brand of football.

One reader-submitted team will be selected each week based on the creativity of the team name. That selected team will be posted on Friday’s blog and in the Gwinnett News, along with Aschermann’s and Purdum’s teams.

If that reader’s team outscores both of the writers’ teams, they will receive a special prize from the wardrobe of Aschermann and Purdum.

D.P., you skurd?! Thought you would stay on the wagon. Guess I am opening the passenger door and kicking you out. I will ride the Grayson wagon into the ditch and it bursts into flames if Brookwood beats Grayson. Just kick me and roll me around so I cook evenly. I will admit homefield and the coaching of Crews is intimidating. But if Grayson loses, it may be better for them in the playoffs from what I can tell. They, and I, will rise from the flames like a Phoenix. There is nothing to fear but fear itself!

T.J. … From Grayson’s standpoint, who would you rather face in the second round: Peachtree Ridge, Norcross or North Gwinnett?

D.P.—first off, did you write off Grayson right before writing this blog? Look what Todd Holcomb wrote. “Brookwood wins at home Friday against Grayson, essentially locking up the No. 1 seed in Region 8. My colleagues from Gwinnett, David Purdum and Larry Hartenstein, who watch their games and then study film on Sundays, each tell me that Grayson wins this one” What changed your mind. I got some inside news (key injury) that worries me about Grayson this week. Want to see if you heard the same thing.

Easy to answer your question. Game I would most like to see for Grayson would be Peachtree Ridge. They are way overated, can not believe they are still in the top 10. North Gwinnett would be the last school I would want to see Grayson against. I definately think they are dome bound. Norcross air attack still scary, but a healthy Grayson sack happy defense vs. Norcross air attack match would be great to see. This match up is probably the most probable the way it looks now. And unfortunately it will most likely take place in Norcross. I know it is a dangerous ride on this bandwagon, but I won’t jump off like others I know…(cough-cough)

Mr. Holcumb, I dont know how long you’ve been following high school football in Ga. but I can tell you this…dont rule out south Ga in AAAAA so fast…especially Lowndes.

David,

I believe Brookwood should beat Grayson, but it will be by a whisker.
I also agree that Brookwood has a good chance of losing by the 2nd round of the playoffs—-presumably against either Peachtree Ridge or Norcross. I understand your hesitation. Brookwood is a bewildering team to figure out. They’ve got the talent enough to win state, but they could just as easily crash and burn early on. Who knows?

T.J. I totally sold Todd down the river. I changed my mind Monday night because I just don’t know if Grayson can keep up on the scoreboard. Not that I expect a high scoring game, but I believe Brookwood gets to 20. Will the Rams? What’s the injury scoop?

Farsider …We think alike.

I think that Brookwood and Grayson are alot alike. Both depend on the run, Brookwood has better feature back with Miles. Grayson has solid Wing-T choice of backs, can not key on one back. Both are weak on pass defense. This is a problem if either team meets with Norcross in playoffs. Biggest thing tilting Brookwood’s way is the coaching. I am still going with Grayson on a win by a field goal, 17 to 14, in this game based the fact they have their kicker back that can hit from 40+ yards out, Grayson’s defense is healthy and nasty, and every feature back Grayson has has faced has been stuffed for under 20 yards. Can Brookwood pass? Realistically, I know it will be brawl at Brookwood on Friday night, and the winner will be limping out of the fight, just hope all the wounds are healed by playoff time.

I forgot. Injury rumor is a Senior on the offensive line of Grayson is injured and is questionable on playing this Friday. Backup is a Sophmore. Not sure who or what specific position. Good news is Grayson has it’s starting RB and kicker back from Peachtree Ridge game. Kicker hit a 44 yarder during Central game.

I’d like toss my 4 cents into the ring…

About Brookwood:

I love Kenny Miles (not literally); he is strong, fast and he and the offensive line have carried this team so far. But can they throw? I’ve seen them play twice and I didn’t see much of a passing game. Miles is a phenomenal tailback, but if that’s all they have, then I can’t see Brookwood getting more than a win or 2 in the playoffs.

Agree with TJ as well. I’d rather play Peachtree or Norcross than North Gwinnett. Right now North is my AAAAA champ pick.

So now even the reporters at the AJC are taking shots at Meadowcreek? You know, they are out there trying there hardest every week, just like everyone else. Is it really fair to make a joke about a bunch of kids? Not really. But then again I am sure you never played football in high school and probably couldn’t understand what these kids deal with. I graduated from Meadowcreek about 10 years ago(the last time we had a decent record 5-5). There was little community support then and there is almost zero now. Give these kids a break, remember they are kids.

please check out Wednesday’s (or Thursday’s, not sure which day) main sports section for a story on Meadowcreek. I think you’ll find there isn’t one shot taken.

IF North Gwinnett wins 8AAAAA and Brookwood takes 7AAAAA they would not meet until the final game for 5A the way the brackets are set.

Easy, McGregor… it’s all in fun. Besides, I was more making fun of myself than Meadowcreek.

Kurt, T.J. … I figure Brookwood’s passing game has to have improved since its opening two losses — and the Broncos were in both of those games. Is it good enough to beat Norcross or a second meeting w/ North Gwinnett? I don’t know.

If North Gwinnett wins it all, Bob Sphire is the greatest coach ever.

I got that backwards NG 7AAAAA and Brookwood 8AAAAA.IF Grayson wins this Friday they will be get a better draw having #1 slot.I think North will beat them in 2nd round if they are 2nd seed.

By David P.

October 23, 2007 6:07 PM | Link to this

NG17 … But if North loses to Norcross and doesn’t get lucky in a ridiculous draw-from-hat tiebreaker, then they might have to face Bwood in the second round. The Region 8 champ could meet the No 2 seed out of Region 7 in the second round. And, vice versa, meaning Region 8 No.2 seed will play Region 7 champ in second round. (If both teams survive the first round, obviously)

lets talk about other regions and players over here two like region 3-A and a player like Tauren Poole.

Pfft….3A—-you serious? Only regions of interest here are 7 & 8. Then I only chime in on the big AAAAA games. It is like Division 1 College to me. 3-A is like Junior College football, only time you would pay attention is if you have it in your backyard or your kids play there.

This game is not really important as far as the state championship is concerned because region 7 should dominate this year’s championship. The Only question is who in region 7 will step up to win. Will it be North Gwinnett, Norcross or Peachtree Ridge’s year to win the AAAAA championship.

It’s something that this Norcross fan brags so much, I would LOVE for Brookwood to meet Norcross in the playoffs. Norcross had a great year last year, an average year this year, yet brag as though they are the Second Coming.I didn’t want to go there, but felt compelled to: I guess when a team has been the so weak for so long that when they have a good year or two then they have to announce it to the world. I could see this coming from Lowndes, Harrison, Stephenson, or some other schools that have had years of success, but let’s be real here.

Devil Lover——Region 7 does seem stronger right now. But that all changes any given weekend. I give North Gwinnett my nod right now. Region 8, that was a good game between Brookwood and Grayson. The 3rd qurter was the turning point with the turnover by Grayson on crucial punt return with in Brookwoods side of the field. Hats off to Coach Crews and the Broncos. Grayson’s coaches forgot to rotate their Defensive line and they got worn down. We all know in the playoffs the season starts all over, with one win at a time. I have been driving the Grayson bandwagon since preseason, but I will tell all of you, Brookwood has gotten better. Have a funny feeling we will see a Brookwood vs. a Norcross game in the second round, I have a feeling Brookwood will win.

David P Now if Norcross Gets beat by North it will be a 3 way tie for 2nd place. Will that be a draw from the hat like 1st place. If so lets say Mill Creek draws 2nd then Norcross would goes to 4th place.I like the odds of Norcross going deeper in the play offs from the 4th place. No matter what happens 2nd place will be tough having to play Brookwood. If north Gwinnett wins out I think they will beat Grayson and go deep in the Playoffs

Now that Brookwood beat Grayson, - what changes in your thinking? Passing, are you kidding me Brookwood has passed more with success in the last four games than it has in the past four years!

Go Broncos!

BBFan, Farsider … Grayson’s the favorite in Region 8, with Parkview, Brookwood and Central or Berkmar battling for the remaining playoff sp

Unfortunately for Bwood fans, I see them staring 0-3 and needing to win 2 of their last 3 against Grayson, Central and Parkview to get to six wins. Right now, I’d say Grayson and Parkview would be the favorites over Brookwood.

You certainly nailed this one.
