Take 10: Our dream games

Such great matchups last weekend. Tucker-Mays. M.L. King-Stephenson. Parkview-Grayson. North Gwinnett-Peachtree Ridge. Just to name a few.

At Take 10, we’re a sucker for a big game. Give us two great teams, an electric atmosphere, some overpriced nachos and we’re set. And while the schedule always gives us plenty of those each season, there are always games out there we dream about. Maybe we’ll see them in the playoffs; some of them, we know we’re not going to get this year without a genie bottle.

So here are the top 10 games we’d like to see played in the metro area this year … if we suddenly had our dreams come true.

10: Washington-Douglass

It’s one of the state’s best rivalries when they actually play, but they haven’t been on each other’s schedules since the last reclassification. The crowd at these games gives it an atmosphere you won’t see in too many places on a Friday night.

9: LaGrange-Chamblee

It may not seem an obvious one, but this would give us Class AAA’s top scoring offense (Chamblee) against its top scoring defense and No. 1 team (LaGrange). Both teams are undefeated and ranked in the top 10. For those saying Chamblee hasn’t faced a great defense, this might just answer that question.

8: Thomas County Central-East Paulding

Region 5-AAAA has two 6-0 teams in East Paulding and Cherokee, but neither is getting much attention. The Raiders have wormed their way to No. 7, but they’re still ranked behind three one-loss teams. I think we’d all like to see if they should be higher.

7: North Cobb-Walton

Let’s decide the Cobb County title here. North Cobb already has beaten Harrison, so this could be a Round Robin-style finale. Plus, the Raiders already have knocked off one No. 1 team this year — Roswell. Why not another? We’re not quite confused enough about Class AAAAA yet.

6: Stephenson-Southwest DeKalb

If it’s not enough to pit two of DeKalb County’s best programs against each other and see the county’s two longest-tenured coaches match wits, the battle of the bands at halftime would be enough reason to be there. At the end of the game, at least 10 percent of the crowd won’t even know what the final score is.

5: Camden County-Tucker

This could be a preliminary test for Tucker’s defense before the big one down the road against Northside-Warner Robins. Camden has put up huge offensive numbers against some inferior competition, averaging more than 55 points in its past four games. But could the Cats keep it up against a Tucker D that has allowed seven points all year?

4: Northside-North Cobb

Is Northside the best team in the state regardless of classification? There might be a few people who think so. But isn’t it easier to decide these questions on the football field than in silly, amateurish blogs? I reckon so. And matching up the two No. 1 teams seems logical enough. If Northside beat North Cobb, we could set up a game for Northside with Georgia or Georgia Tech the next week.

3: Buford-North Gwinnett

Many of Buford’s fans seem to think their team could be one of the best in any classification. Beating that team out in Ohio and a decent Class AAA Cartersville squad did nothing to quell that belief. So let them prove it on the field. Call it the Cross-Class Gwinnett Clash. It’ll draw a crowd. Trust me.

2: Northside-Tucker

The Tigers’ D looked impenetrable until last week, when Mays erased the scoreless streak on a short drive to the end zone. Northside still looks like, well, Northside. Could Tucker’s defense shut down the Eagles, and do the Tigers have enough firepower to score points if the defense couldn’t clamp down? Hopefully, we’ll find out in seven weeks or so.

1: Peachtree Ridge-Roswell

This might have been better as an opening-week showdown, but it could still be a tiebreaker of sorts after last year’s title game tie. Sure, they’re different teams than they were last December. But this could be a theraputic experience for all those who left the 2006 title game in a zombie-like daze.

Go on. Take Ten. What are your dream matchups? Which games would you like to see that aren’t scheduled to happen this year? Which teams need to find a way to get each other on the schedule, even if it means giving up someone’s first-born child? Here’s your chance to plant the seed in the head of your favorite school’s athletics director.

TCC - East Paulding??? East Paulding has played nobody but losers with opponents only winning 8 games and losing 28. If you look at the GaSports Coached poll they aren’t even ranked like the AJC has them. TCC would win by at least 30. Oh I forgot this is ATLANTA.

Anyone who has actually seen them play will tell you that Northside WR and Buford are two of the best teams…in the country. Northside-Buford would be THE game to decide the best in the state. Nobody in 5A coud match up with the speed of NSWR or the strength of Buford. Both teams have a little of the other as well.
Also in the states ultimate top 5 would be a pick-3 of Charlton County, Harrison, North Cobb, and Thomas Co. Central.

Northside WR is a National Top 5 team and Buford is possibly a top 20 team if they were in 4 or 5A.

David-

That’s part of why I’d like to see that game. You’re right that East Paulding hasn’t played any elite teams. So I’m always curious to see these undefeated teams exposed to some tough competition. Either EP or Cherokee will probably finish the regular season undefeated. Sometimes, teams without a loss are much better/worse than you might think they are.

All growing up with North Gwinnett being a triple A school in the 90’s, Buford was the only other team. The rivalry was huge! The North Gwinnett school district totally surrounded the buford district and it was always the buford city kids versus the country kids around them. I remember kids transferring to and from our schools just to play for the other side. That was a great rivalry, one that I would like to see again one day. Man these suburbs make life rough.

We would love to play North Gwinnett. We played them for years and years until they (NG) decided to stop playing us about 5-6 years ago. They were are HEATED ARCH RIVALS….it would be good to play and beat them on a regular basis again. Nothing’s changed…..we are still BUFORD!

  1. North Springs - Riverwood - an old rivalry with two pretty bad teams, but I have to give the props to the rivalry from my HS days…

  2. Northside WR-Parkview - Got to take the two big names on this one.

  3. Seminole County - Rabun County - A true fight for the state as two teams from complete opposite ends collide

  4. Oconee County - Stephens County - Back in the day when Oconee was bad, this was THE rival game to go to in East Georgia

  5. Banneker - Washington (Atlanta) - Call it Battle of the Bands because that’s what you’d really want to see!

  6. Brunswick - Savannah - Call it the Beach Brawl or the Coastal Crash

  7. Valdosta-Carrollton - Two great state programs with college programs that hate each other to boot!

  8. Marist - Roswell - Nothing like a bunch of rich snobby kids playing a bunch of rich snobby kids. You figure out which is which!

  9. St. Pius - Marist - Call it the Catholic Bowl

  10. Clarke Central - Cedar Shoals - The greatest game in Athens in HS football every year, bar none.

Though they have not even made the radar yet, which I am sure they will before the season is over, there is but one game in West Georgia and it takes place the last game of the season for both of the teams. It is the Newnan Cougars against the East Coweta Indians. This game is as good as it gets, defensive struggles, lighting up the scoreboard and even triple overtime. How can the AJC not mention this storied rivalry?

Excuse me? Buford/North Gwinnett? Don’t get me wrong, I think Buford is a great football program, a real machine, for AA football. However, they could not compete with a 5A schedule. I think people might be surprised how easily NG would win.

Let me explain why I feel this way. I witnessed a smimmage between Buford and Grayson 2 years ago, when Buford had 6 or 7 DI committments on the team, including the 6’6” QB who went to Oregon and Grayson had none. BUFORD DIDN’T EVEN GET A FIRST DOWN IN THE ENTIRE GAME! The QB must have gotten a scholarship based on his height and winning a state championship, but he looked confused against the Grayson defense and I don’t think he completed a pass. Buford has some 5A caliber talent on their team, but not a team full. They have enough to continue their run on state championships until something drastic like a class change happens. But Buford will make sure that doesn’t happen, because they don’t want to compete against higher class schools.

And the Ohio thing? The rumor is the team they were supposed to play backed out of the game, so a much lesser team was brought in at last minute replacement. Ever notice how the rest of the Ohio teams kicked the crap out of there opponents?

Sorry for the epistle, but let’s not make Buford out to be something they’re not. They’re not the best team in the country, no matter the classification.

Fair points, George. You may be right. I’d probably lean toward agreeing with you. But I’m surprised by games quite a bit. I’d like to see on the field how Buford would stack up against a good AAAAA team, especially one that used to be a big county rival.

George Gipp,

Saying that Buford cannot compete with 5A schools is a joke. Everyone knows that Buford is one of the best teams in Georgia. You have to remember it’s not the quantity of players, it’s the quality. Buford has proven year in and year out that they have a top program. Take a look at the top schools and you’ll find two-way players. The depth thing is important, but the quality of the players is what matters the most. You have to face facts. Look at their record. It speaks for itself. If you do not agree after reviewing the facts, then you just have a personal issue against Buford.

By Jeff Haws

October 17, 2007 3:30 PM | Link to this

Absolutely, George. Can you imagine the atmosphere for that one? I bet a bunch of people who went to school up there would come out of the woodwork for that game. And all the people who proclaim Buford the greatest team of all time would have a chance to see where they stand. It’d be a lot of fun.

Having seen Northside Warner Robins play several times, ranked Nationally at #6 by Sports Illustrated and something like #10 by USA Today, I will let you combine Buford and any other team in the state and I will still have the give the edge to Northside Eagles. Way too much talent!

Correct me if I am wrong, but wasn’t Columbia nationally ranked in basketball before Tucker beat them for the state championship last year? National rankings are a good guess to sort of measure your team against, but they are just that…a guess. I think that if/when NSWR/TCC/Tucker meet this year it would be a nail biter either way. On to the Buford debate…Yeah, Buford looks great now. But if there starters had to play the whole game against real competition in AAAA or AAAAA week in and week out they would not look nearly as impressive. MARK IT DOWN, If Buford had to play Tucker, TCC, Parkview, Valdosta or NSWR’s schedule they would have at least…AT LEAST…2 or 3 losses year in or year out. Take a look at 6AAAA, Buford would lose (this year) to Tucker, Mays, SWD, Marist & Pius. Take that to the bank. 2007 Buford final record 5-5.

Mr. Gipp, I also saw the game you mentioned and based on that game I would feel the same as you about Buford and AAAAA schools. However, since i had a son on that team I know the rest of the story.

First of all, Buford did get a first down, 3 to be exact and the final score was like 14-0. Neither team played well, the game was sloppy and Buford had a new QB who was very nervous and it showed. Coach Cohn and Coach Wood are very good friends and both tried a lot of people and a lot of stuff. That was a rebuilding Buford team that came a long way as time went on. I can assure this Buford team is big enough, fast enough, strong enough and has enough of them to compete with any AAAAA school. would they win them all, probably not. We’ll never know anyway but it is fun to talk about.

5A State Champion vs 4A State Champion this year and every year

By Ted

October 17, 2007 7:07 PM | Link to this

I for one would love to see the renewal of the Buford/NG rivaly. But unlike a lot of the larger classification schools, the larger schools refuse to schedule Buford because there is a great likelihood they would loose a game the “larger” school is supposed to win. (E.g.,you won’t see DIV I college teams rushing to schedule Appalachian State in the near future)

Buford has had preseason scrimages with the larger schools like Grayson, Tucker, Parkview and this year Flowery Branch (34-0) after 2 quarters, and beat a 5A East Coweta team last year. The staff has been trying to schedule some of the larger schools because they aren’t in a strong region and need the competition to stay sharp.

I however, am a realist and realize Buford is not the best team in the country and may not be as good as the 2003 Buford team. Only time will tell. But, they could play with any of the larger schools in the state. If you don’t believe that, you’ve not seen them play this year.

Looking forward to playing Charlton Co. in the 3rd round if they can get by a good # 2 seed from 1AA (either Early County, Fitzgerald, or possibly Thomasville) in the 2nd round.

hey i know no one really cares about junior varsity football, but its the future of the varsity. hey george, ummm let me think here. o yea buford hasn’t lost a game this year to a gwinnett team on the jv level. do you know why they play gwinnett teams? Its because n one wants to play against them. Grayson scrimmage, buford had 9 starters out on defense, plus 7 on offense. Had to play young guys. Buford has killed flowery branch and tucker in the past jv games. 3 years ago we played parkview in a scrimmage when both teams came off winning state. Parkview won on a biased call by the ref to set up a fg as time dwindled. anytime baby anytime buford is ready

Good take on that, Ted.

Interesting comparison between Buford and Appalachian State. A lot of people criticized the Michigan AD for scheduling Appy State because — the line of thinking goes — if you’re going to schedule a I-AA team, don’t schedule the very best one out there since hardly anybody knows the difference anyway.

Perhaps the same could be said for those at AAAAA and AAAA schools in Georgia. If you’re going to stick a AA team on your schedule, why make it Buford when there are plenty of smaller teams you’ll probably be able to easily beat. If you lose to Buford, all a lot of people will notice is you lost to a AA team.

For all of you that were at that Buford-Grayson scrimmage. Lets take a look back….Grayson pretty much dominates a Buford team with 6 or 7 starters out, Including 2 OL and DL (everyone knows Buford’s strength is their lines.) Fast forward about 3 weeks into the season, Buford takes on Central Gwinnett and though they don’t like to say, were looking for revenge after they had their record winning streak broke at Central the year before. Buford goes on to win that game 43-21 against a 5A Central team that went on to the Elite 8(with most starters that were out in that Grayson scrimmage). The next week Central and Grayson play, the final score 52-21. Think about that long and hard. Buford then goes on to lose to Charlton County in the third round after a punt is muffed with around 4 or 5 minutes left in the game that allows them to score and win the game 26-21. That Charlton team went on to win the State Championship. Now since that situation is cleared up. Buford has a great team and would perform well in any classification. They aren’t as good as Northside but they would beat NG, because it would be hard for them to throw the ball with the best DT I have ever seen in highschool, Omar Hunter, being in the backfield every play.

Yeah, North Gwinnett and Buford used to play for years. Buford was always recruiting players. Not just football. Anyone remember Christi Thomas? Look at all the trouble they have been in during the past. Some players didn’t pay out of district tuition. It has gone on for years. Now they have coaches and facilities and have expanded their city limits to make them more attractive to all the former Atlanta Falcon player families to live. I have lived in the area all of my life. I KNOW what I am speaking of. If anyone says differently they DO NOT know the complete background.

Let me clarify one thing from my other comments. Buford and North Gwinnett used to have only one place to play baseball during the summer. We all played together. We all became great friends. Because football became so important it broke friendships between kids and families. I had rather Buford succeed and not play North. I had rather be able to root for both teams and keep friends rather than spoil it for a rivalry that is TOO close to being a feud.

Just because players transfer to different schools doesn’t mean that school recruited them. Recruiting is against GHSA rules and would be stopped if it was going on. It is just the concept of “If you build it, they will come”. Buford has won state championships and built some of the nicest facilities in the state and because of that people want to go there.

It makes me laugh when I see comments such as the one calling the Peachtree Ridge - Roswell AAAAA State Championship Game of 2006 boring! That game was one of (if not) the most exciting games that the state of Georgia has ever witnessed. Perhaps everyone would have rather seen Lowndes County BLOW OUT teams like Parkview (2004) and Brookwood (2005) in route to being back to back State Champs! Boy… those games sure were more exciting! Give me a break!

However, there is a DREAM MATCH-UP that occurs every year down in south Georgia… and it just so happens that it is occurring this week! The P-ridge 5A State Game was anything but boring

Northshide should be removed from this list. There would be no contest, no matter whom they played. It wouldn’t be a dream but a nightmare. The state champs with 90% of their starters back this year. I guess this is an article about dream games, so keep dreaming.

last year’s 5A game was between two under achievers and was not reflective of the strength in 5A. It was like watching two middle-school girls in a cat fight. Both schools played to ‘not lose’ and should be barred from the playoffs this year.

Played at Buford: Buford 45 NSWR 21 Played on Neutral Field: Buford 38 NSWR 24 Played at WR: Buford 32 NSWR 28

NSWR thinks they can play up and be successful? Wrong. They couldn’t play down for games against Buford and Charlton and be successful.

Now back to reality, Buford Over NSWR dreams over, tell me what the real score would be. I guess NSHS 30 Buford 7.

Why is everyone so stuck up on what class a school is in?? There are 3 teams (Lagrange, Buford, and Lincoln County) that I would put up against ANY school Class 4 or 5-(A)tlanta. By the way a BUFORD-LAGRANGE matchup would pack even the GA Dome even if they were the only two teams there. And who the heck is Chamblee??

I really wish all you dreamer 5A schools would remember the winning tackle in the Kentucky LSU game was made by a LaGrange graduate(Braxton Kelly). LaGrange has given up 6 points in 6 games this year and would dominate any 5A school- they have 5 kids on defense who run under 4.4 40’s They won 8 state championships in the largest classification and have 11 total How many do you have?

I want a piece of that action, Dream Match Ups.

Can I take on Maxie in the semis and get the Purdum/Holcomb winner in the finals? I’ve got a wicked right hook that’ll lay out any one of ‘em.

Alot of people are right about Douglass-SWD, Douglass-Mays, Stephenson-SWD, (Hey yall remember when SWD- Columbia was “THE Game” in Dekalb. But some others that would good to see: How bout seeing a cross Fulton North vs. South Showdown, Creekside vs Roswell, Westlake vs Chattahoochee, Banneker vs Northview, Tri-Cities vs Milton or Northview. I really wish we start doing something to bring opposite communities together. What about these for Gwinnett vs Dekalb, North Gwinnett vs. ML King, Norcross vs Tucker, Peachtree Ridge vs Stephenson, Brookwood vs SW Dekalb, Parkview-Chamblee, Grayson-Redan. Hey all of us in Dekalb want to see Tucker vs. either Stephenson or ML King. Just for their names Washington, Mays, Douglass, Carver and ML King should always play. Buford vs either North Gwinnett, Norcross, Peachtree Ridge, Marist, Stephenson, ML King, Tucker, Mays or Douglass (basically any good team from a larger classification, because the way they cheat and recruit the should be forced to play in a higher classification anyway. That’s a weaker than the past Cartersville team they beat and that Ohio team was overrated and SLOW. I get so tired a seeing how they beat up on some inferior, weaker sisters of the poor school. And I’d love to see Walton, North Cobb, and Roswell play some teams from Dekalb, South Fulton, or Clayton schools. Personally Id love to see Walton play someone like Westlake, Douglass, or Stephenson. How about it?! Let’s mix it up some. Because if I see another Chattahoochee-Centenniel game on CSS I’m gonna puke.

the refs didn’t lose that game for you puddin’ Tift had a touchdown taken away from them in that game and had an imcomplete forward pass called a fumble. what happened was the Bullpuppies had not been hit all year and they got their bell rung they couldn’t handle the Tift defense. is the reason you call yourself is puddin’ is because your brains have been scrambled.

Obviously you clowns that keep spoutin Lagrange at ANYONE are now feeling foolish. The Carver Tigers are going to march forward and devour whatever is in their way. Lagrange! Ha. Bunch of country boys with a country attitude, ready to lay down and take it. So Now! Shhheee, Lagrange…there’s a new restaurant at the edge of town and you BETTER not try to go eat there… the tables be turnin on you.

For David of T.C.C. Yes the Raiders have not been the greatest team in the past but that has changed with the new coaching staff brought on last year. We made it to the Dome as you did but with a overall better record than T.C.C. Every time someone wants to put another schools record down it’s always, “they didn’t play anyone good”. That line is so used up it’s not funny. I can’t count the number of times we heard “E.P. won’t win because they are no good” Well those people found out diffrent as you would. You can say we played nothing but a bunch of losers but if E.P. and T.C.C. were to tangle I think you would think twice about your comment. 30 point win over E.P.? I don’t think you’ve been paying attention to us since last year. Maybe we’ll get the chance to meet one day and you will learn, maybe.

mill creek making the playoffs is a joke. You named the three best teams but its not like you beat any of them. It is just mill creek and the rest of the teams of in that region aren’t good.

BUFORD vs. NORTH GWINNETT, this year by far would be the top game of the season in any state. Being a alumni of BUFORD from the late 80’s, I remember those days when BUFORD/NORTH played. WOW talk about GATE MONEY!!! Niether teams stadium is large enough to hold all the people that would be at that game, that game you have to be played in the DOME!! Then again, that would not be RIVALRY HIGH SCHOOL FOOTBALL, play it at NORTH!! Would love to whoop em’ again on thier field! My senior year……BUFORD 32, NORTH 2. Took the opening kick off for a TD!! What a whooping NORTH took that night, and the bragging rights around town was OURS!!!

Now I keep reading about how BUFORD could beat anyone in the state, let me first tell you that is not true….being a BUFORD fan I think BUFORD could compete very well with anyone in the state and I think BUFORD is a top 5 team in any class. My top ten would go something like this..

1 NSWR 2 NORTH GWINNETT 3 TUCKER 4 BUFORD 5 HARRISON 6 THOMAS COUNTY CENTRAL 7 BROOKWOOD 8 LOWNDES 9 PEACHTREE RIDGE 10 (tie) NORCROSS/NORTH HALL

Got to give some love to NORTH HALL, they kicking everyones BUTT!!

What I would love to see is after each classifications state title is won, let’s have a extended season to see who the best in the state is, play another playoff with the top five state winners and one more team to be choosen to make it 6 teams.

OR LETS ATLEAST HAVE AN EXTENDED WEEK OF FOOTBALL AND LET BUFORD WHOOP NORTH AGAIN!!! DANG!!!

Buford could easily ELECT to play up in AAA. AAAAA and AAAA teams would be a lot more agreeable to a scheduled game against a AAA team.

Plus, then Buford could get beat by Stephens County every year and Hart County every other year.

I disagree with many of these comments as most have not seen the other team play not their stats. How many TCC fans have actually seen East Paulding play? If you really want the best opinions in this blog then ask the officials that do these games every week. As they see a large variety of schools and classifications and know who is actually good or not. Also, ask the coaches of schools which is a good way of gathering info. Ask the head coach of each school which school who would love to play in the finals and that will be the best matchups. For the rest of everyone…you are just stating one-sided comments without knowing all the facts. Yes, I am an official and have seen many great schools and yes I also live by East Pauling. Coach Reid has done a great job with that program and it will only get better! He will be up there with the Flowes, Cobleighs, etc among current outstanding coaches year after year!

If you think that Camden has put up some tremendous numbers on offense over the past several weeks…just think what those numbers would have been if Jeff Herron had left the starters in after halftime….admitedly the Region is by far the weakest I have ever seen…that is not Camdens fault…perhaps we should consider playing in Region 1 (for football only) and let the rest of the region drop down to the appropriate classification…or drop the sport altogether (in some cases)….the defense is as good as advertised against Warner Robbins in the dome…they can play with anybody
