Time for another wake-up call

Darryl Maxie

North Gwinnett ran the table last season, right up to the moment it went into a 9-0 vs. 9-0 game against Norcross and went thud in the night.

The Bulldogs get another chance tonight when they play host to Peachtree Ridge, in a battle of teams that enter the game with unblemished Region 7-AAAAA records.

Nothing in 7-AAAAA happens the easy way. Thoughts that Peachtree Ridge would enjoy a defending champion’s honeymoon were squelched in the second week, when Grayson defeated the Lions in a nonregion game.

And just when it looked like Norcross had what it took to run the table again, only a week later Peachtree Ridge rose up and knocked the Blue Devils off their perch.

Now, comes North Gwinnett into this mix, looking as impressive as ever. The Bulldogs started the season with quality wins over Walton and Brookwood. Since then, they’ve played 7-AAAAA foes Mill Creek, Collins Hill and Duluth — a combined three wins among them. They’re members of the region, so it was required duty, but that’s the kind of thing that can make your feet fall asleep.

North Gwinnett does a lot of things right. On the strong left arm of Michael Tamburo, it passes as accurately and more often than anybody in the region. With Tyler Jarry leading the way, the Bulldogs run the ball effectively. They are unbeaten, unblemished and until Friday night, as untouchable as ever, lacking only the thing that’s fueling Peachtree Ridge.

The wake-up call. Losing to Grayson wasn’t pleasant at the time, but Peachtree Ridge has been a house afire since. And, as evidenced by its victory against Norcross, it has the kind of defense that can shut a pass-happy team down.

Beating Walton and Brookwood shows that the Bulldogs are for real and should be included in any discussion of title contenders. Strange as it may sound, they should be all the moreso after Peachtree Ridge gets their attention and issues a wake-up call they can’t get anywhere else. It also happened to Lowndes, Roswell and Harrison, so a one-loss North Gwinnett will still be in some pretty good company.

•Stephenson vs. M.L. King: Here comes the biggest threat to Stephenson’s status as Class AAAAA’s No. 1 team. And the Jaguars know it. This one’s on the defense. It says here Stephenson has what it takes to remain king of the mountain, especially after Douglass almost clipped King last week.

• Flipping the script: I’m trying to hold off on sentencing teams to the anonymity the Winless Protection Program affords, although soon picking against the 0-fers will become too easy and they’ll require official shielding for their own good. Wins this week will help Clarkston, Lakeside-DeKalb, Lithonia, Montgomery County and Northside-Columbus avoid that fate.

I am not educated on the Atlanta area 5A school, but when Coffee played Stephenson in the playoff’s last year they did not impress me much, aside from the fact that Coffee beat themselves. The Coffee/Tift game should be very exciting. There are many great QB’s in the state, but I hope someone is paying attention to Coffee’s QB- Burke Batten. He is 6-1 @ 220 lbs, deadly raffle of an arm, very smart on the field and can motor when need be. Coffee 28, Tift 14

NORTH COBB HAS THE BEST HIGH SCHOOL FOOTBALL TEAM IVE SEEN IN A LONG TIME.THEY HAVE WAY TOO MUCH TEAM SPEED.AT LEAST 14 OF THEY’RE TEAM STARTERS SHOULD BE CONSIDERED TO BE ALL STATE CANDIDATES.I DONT KNOW WHO CAN STOP THEM AS OF RIGHT NOW.I MEAN SURE THEY HAD A ROUGH WEEK AGAINST CAMPBELL LAST WEEK WHO ALSO IS VERY TALENTED ,BUT GREAT BALL CLUBS WIN TIGHT GAMES.THE ONLY TEAMS THAT I THINK HAVE A CHANCE OF COMPETING WITH THEM MAY BE AMONG THE LIKES OF PEACHTREE RIDGE,STEPHENSON, AND DEFINITELY NORCROSS.THIS TEAM HAS A NUMBER OF ATLETES ON BOTH SIDE OF THE BALL THAT CAN MAKE PLAYS SUCH AS #8 MATT ROARK,#20 CALVIN MIDDLETON,#52 ALONZO JONES,#7 JARVIS WEST,#14 MICHAEL EMERSON,#23 BRIAN PRESUME AND THE LITS JUST GOES ON…I BELIEVE THAT THIS TEAM IS THE UNDISPUTED 2007 GEORGIA AAAAA STATE CHAMPIONS.

BR…Scrimmage Game? Ask the fans from Prattville and all the people who watched that game if it was a scrmmage. They sold tickets, played 48 minutes, had a half time with a band, and it was TELEVISED!!! USA Today even wrote an article about it. Scrimmage…hummmmmm!!

Darryl is on the money. North Gwinnett will have to step it up to beat Peachtree Ridge. I’ve seen NG’s home games and they really have been unchallenged. So, the second half of each game they have let down. They will need a solid 60 minutes to compete with these guys.

The “scrimmage” was offiically billed as a pre-season game. Read more about it here: http://www.ngfootball.org/press.htm

Anyway, Darryl is probably right, but I’m going to pull for the home team and hope he’s wrong. Go Bulldogs!!!!!

I have relatives in Prattville and that community didn’t consider it a ‘scrimmage’. It’s likely North Gwinnett wouldn’t have either if they had won. They were smoked by Prattville so put the correct record by their name and move on.

To all the NC naysayers: being a former student there in the 90s, I am very proud of our school. You have to remember we suffered greatly with the creation of Harrison and Kenn Mtn, so yes, it did take us some time. But what’s even better is the support this team is getting period. In my day, getting a LARGE crwod to go to an away game was hard. From what I heard (I live in another part of the state and cannot attend NC games), there were hundreds of people at the Campbell, and, if it’s away, I bet there’ll be hundreds more at the Woodstock game. If it’s at Emory Sewell Stadium…God help the Wolverines. I always hear 1979…the loss to Clarke Central due to shoddy officiating, and I hope this is our year. I truly hope the Warriors make it to the Dome- that is one game I will certainly make it to.

Go Warriors!!!!!

Coffee’s back-up 9th grade kicker will fill-in. He has a great leg. Kicking will not be a problem. Loving is gone, but will have no effect on the Coffee/Tift game. Coffee has 3 other physical and fast RB’s and 1 FB that is very fast and wieghts 240 lbs and can run the ball! Go Trojans!!!

This is a blog not the whiners zone…please! Jenn: Blocked punts and field goals-special teams matter. It was a quality win over Brookwood whether it’s 1 or 20. Brookwood is a good team, just ask Berkmar and Valdosta. North beat them on special teams. dk & No Scrimmage: Prattville was a preseason #8 team in the country…not the county, the whole USA. They are now #3 in the USA Today Poll. It was a complete game scrimmage. The win did not count for Prattville either. Get over it. North is solid and here to stay. Suwanee Bowl 2 will be a fantastic game. Both teams need to play their best. It’s the kind of match-up you’d have seen much later in November years ago. Region 7’s top 3 are as good as any in the state. Special teams may be the difference in this one, both defenses don’t get the pub-they’re both real good. I’m glad Darryl picked the ‘Ridge. North is always better as the underdog with something to prove. Get there early and get a good seat!

“Here comes the biggest threat to Stephenson’s status as Class AAAAA’s No. 1 team. And the Jaguars know it.”; No, No, No My Brother You Are So Wrong….

The M.L.K. Lions understand that we need this win to finally get some respect in the polls and after being one of the winningest and most consistent programs over the last (5) years in GA while handling the transition from 3A to 5A with ease.

We’ve been licking our chops and waiting on this game all season long and almost slipped last week while over looking a proud Douglas program anxious to play our Dekalb County rival; lesson learned.

Don’t get me wrong, we have much respect for Stephenson, Tucker, and SW Dekalb for representing Dekalb County football, but there’s a new KING in town and the torch will be passed tonight baby. We fear no one!

MLK has the best football program in AAAAA. DO NOT be fooled, oh, Stephenson is good, but Stephenson is also nervous about the game tonight, and they should be. MLK is truly hungry for this WIN. They will not roll over and play dead. NOT TONIGHT! If Stephenson wins, MLK will give them their due, but that is a BIG IF!!!

By Just Fair

October 12, 2007 3:07 PM | Link to this

Reminder: Tonight is the first game that Stephenson will play thus far in the competition that is competitive and has an equal chance of winning. Stephenson is ranked No. 1 in the AJC poll. They are ranked No. 2 in the Region. MLK is ranked No. 10 in the AJC poll. They are ranked No. 1 in the Region. The Regional rankings are what count in the end, not the AJC’s personal opinion polls. Neither team has lost; however, Stephenson has yet to play a team that can compete (MLK, Douglas & Redan). These teams are not pushovers by any means. Although I love everybody’s team spirit, please do not overlook these 3 teams/facts.

You helped give North great field position to take it to the House! Then for the handful of plays you actually played, you did squat. North was lucky to be rid of you. Y’all got rolled. Put a few on the board in the 3rd quarter and then THA DAWGS got all up in yo faces. 31-19. Scoreboard there Da Ridge! “My disdain for Brookwood continues to grow.74-22? The Broncos were winning 60-7 at the half and then played 2nd and 3rd string the entire 2nd half and the mercy clock rule was in effect beginning in the 3rd quarter. So back off our coaching staff because you obviously weren’t at the game. Yeah you beat us in 2005 49-7, but if you remember it was only 21-7 at the half so really your scrubs didn’t play until the end so there really isn’t any comparison.
