Time’s running out for Memorex teams

Darryl Maxie

There used to be a popular television commercial in which a glass would be placed on a table and the great Ella Fitzgerald would be heard — but not seen — hitting a high note.

The glass would shatter and the voiceover would ask: “Is it live or is it Memorex?”

Week four of the high school football season is upon us, and it’s one last Memorex moment on which several teams better capitalize fully. Because after this week, it’s going to be live.

Stockbridge is going to be 4-0 after tonight. Berkmar is going to be 3-0. Underdogs of the world, unite!

When Stockbridge is finished beating Dutchtown, the Tigers will be 4-0 for the first time since 1967. Once-in-40-years-occasions deserve their due, and Stockbridge fans should enjoy the Memorex while it lasts.

What follows for the Tigers: Baldwin, Northside-Warner Robins, Upson-Lee and Westside-Macon. According to the Georgia High School Football Historians Association, Stockbridge is a combined 0-15 against those teams.

Berkmar will be 3-0 for two reasons.

A) It is 3-0 already.

B) It does not play tonight.

Every now and then, I have to slip an absolute certainty into a column in which sometimes there is no such thing.

The Patriots have been 3-0 in three of the last four seasons. From Games 4 through the end of those four seasons, they are a combined 8-15. They’ve lost 20 of their last 24 to Central Gwinnett — their next opponent — and 19 of the last 22 to Brookwood, the team they play the week after.

For some teams who have arrived at this moment unscathed, the challenge is to prove that what we’re seeing is, in fact, live.

Take Tucker, for instance. The Tigers go into a big game against St. Pius tonight, not only unbeaten at 3-0, but unscored upon at 135-0. Whether they’ll keep the Golden Lions — who are averaging 45 points a game — off the scoreboard is dicey, but the bet here is that what we’re seeing is as live as it gets. Tucker is going from team of question marks to team of exclamation points, and one that can win tough Region 6-AAAA.

North Cobb is 3-0 and has passed its first live-or-Memorex test. Shane Queen’s Warriors squeaked by Harrison 13-12 last week. Assisted by eight penalties, yes, but there have been years where the Warriors would leave such gifts unopened. This year, they capitalized.

Now, the Warriors have another chance to prove they’re for real — against McEachern. It wasn’t that long ago that North Cobb ended an 11-game losing streak in the series against the Indians. But they’ve won three of the last five meetings and this season’s momentum should carry them to four out of the last six.

For some of the underdogs out there, live or Memorex isn’t the question. It’s when will the suffering end? Week four should provide at least a brief respite for them.

Our Lady of Mercy, roughed up on the field and in this space (though not maliciously), will beat Towns County. Morrow will beat Newton. Like Stockbridge, they should enjoy it.

Last week: 128-34 (.790) •Season: 381-113 (.771)

Ok Maxie, I can completely understand your pick for the East Paulding / Alexander match up. Logically, yes - EPHS has TWO distinct Varsity Squads and they boast over 200 young men in their football program. Their past records do speak for themselves…but what you haven’t taken into account is Alexander’s secret weapon…we have convinced our young men that they only have to take 11 of them at a time….for added measure - we let them watch the first half the movie “300”. Anyone who saw the movie knows why we didn’t let them see the second half :)

The Cougars are tracking pirates….watch out Raider Brigade -The Pack is hungry.

Hey, Darryl, how about an analysis sometime this season of “battles between 0-fers?

Monroe Area against Clarkston this week, by all rights, ought to end in a 0-0 tie.

Meadowcreek, God bless ‘em, will they ever crack the “W” column? I had hopes after their first game in which the had a decent showing, but they’ve quickly faded. Still, I’d love to see this David knock off a Goliath sometime soon.

We all look at teams that are bound for glory, but let’s remember that there are those out there who still hope for a fleeting glimpse of mediocrity.

Just a thought…..

Are you kidding me Maxie? We held ACA to a good game last week, which you probably thought was going to be a knock down drag out, and we are going to BEAT Towns County this week. We are a strong team this year way better than we ever were. Can you give us a little more credit?

Ok Maxie, keep giving predictions on Metro area football. You have no idea of the real football played in Middle, South, East, and West GA.

Hey Maxie,

Cass and Cartersville are both off this week, but face each other next week in the Battle of Cartersville.

Cass actually stands a chance at going 4-0 THROUGH Cartersville this year.

If they can pull that off, you might well see them in the Dome for the first time in school history…

Maxie, Jeff has fallen and bumped his head. Commenting on the CAss/Cville next week and predicting if Cass pulls it off they are going to the dome. He doesnt know what it takes to get to the dome if he is basing on that. Neither team will see a dome this year unless they buy tickets.

Jeff, if you can get by Cartersville you still have Carrollton, Haralson County and Villa Rica all undefeated still. Good luck you will need other players other than Richard to step up this year in 6AAA.

Honestly guys, I would be happy seeing Cass make it to week 2 of the playoffs!

Beating Cartersville, much like UGA beating Tech or Florida, means you had a good season.

Getting to week 2 (or further) of playoffs means you made school history.

September 21, 2007 10:36 PM | Link to this

Maxie you need to come out of your ivory tower and go watch some games so that you will be a better at picking winners.

Had you go to the scrimmage between walton and norcross before the season you would have known that based on the relative poor playing of roswell that walton should beat them. And if you had been watching norcross you wouls not have picked grayson to beat norcross.

Lets get the number 1 AAAAA team right this week after beating north forsyth 48-0 NNNNNNNNNorcross.

By NC; YOU KNOW =)

i do believe that you second guessed north cobb; and i think they kicked some butt tonight and won 36-3. think twice next time. =)

What’s up with the rankings? Cherokee defeated a 10th ranked team in the Dome at the classic. Still undefeated we are not ranked. And there are a few of 2-1 and 3-1 teams in AAAA and AAAAA! What a joke!!
