Lots of lists, lots of winners
The Atlanta Journal-Constitution
Today’s “journalism” is about lists. You don’t have to be able to write, to structure a sentence or to craft anything that will hold somebody’s tiny attention span more than two minutes.
If you build a list, the clicks will come. So say the online experts, and they have lists of stats to back them up. So instead of lamenting the loss of prose, this week will be about naked capitulation. As in three lists that will be relevant today.
•Three teams that will be 3-0 after this week: 1. Tucker. 2. Carrollton. 3. Chattahoochee.
Tucker, it said here last week, had no chance to beat Marist four in a row, since nobody else had done it in 33 years. The Tigers then beat Marist worse than ever. That’s how you spell rebuttal. If you’re going to miss a prediction, miss spectacularly enough to ridicule yourself about it publicly.
Carrollton has to go 3-0 if for no other reason than to spare me from being spectacularly wrong about Westminster for three consecutive weeks. If Westminster wins, I may never pick against the Wildcats again — which may not be good news to their faithful, given that they only seem to win when some fool says they won’t.
Chattahoochee shocked Camden County, and not because Camden’s former defensive coordinator and current ‘Hooch coach Terry Crowder remembered the secret handshake. Wheeler is good for a shocker — remember Roswell last season? — but surely the Wildcats are not gauche enough to ruin the ‘Hooch’s flow. Are they?
•Three W teams that won’t have any W’s after this week: 1. Warner Robins. 2. Washington. 3. Washington-Wilkes.
Warner Robins lost to Central Gwinnett last year before going to the Dome. Now, having been outscored 54-10, the Demons look anything but Dome-bound as Dennis Roland’s Black Knights Central Gwinnett visit Saturday.
Washington encounters a Marist team that was embarrassed by Tucker. Uh-oh.
Washington-Wilkes resumes its U.S. 378 series with Lincoln County, looking nothing like the team that clipped the Red Devils 3-0 last year. Meanwhile, Lincoln County still looks like Lincoln County.
•Four groves and their fortunes: Cedar Grove wins, which means Miller Grove does not. Hillgrove wins, which has nothing to do with why Groves does not.
Cedar Grove hung with both Southwest DeKalb and Mays before losing. Miller Grove surprised Washington last week, but came nowhere close to surprising Tucker the week before. If Cedar Grove is really about to be something, Miller Grove is a team it has to beat.
Hillgrove is a relatively new school with a friendly schedule, and Southeast Whitfield, which last had a winning season in 1986, is nothing if not friendly. Groves, from Savannah, got whacked last week by Brunswick in a game that had that pattern-forming scent rather than an aberrational one.
•Last week: 127-34 (.789) •Season: 253-79 (.762)

The Cedar Grove - Miller Grove game should be interesting. A must win for Cedar Grove. Surprised that Miller Grove got the signature before Cedar. However this should be close till the end. I like Cedar Grove in a nail biter but would not be suprised at all by a Miller Grove win.

There is a sleeper up I-85 N off of Indian Trail - GAC - If Buford takes them lightly, look for an upset - GAC has a player (Robinson) who plays quietly and then at the end of the game, stats show he was all over the place. I live in Roswell, but I’ve been watching GAC every since Caleb King put them on the map - look over their history - if they were not 2A and private, we would be saying they have a “program” over there - my prediction: they will be in the Dome this year.

Did you know that Valdosta beat the #1 team in Utah (Jordan High) who is national ranked at #8 in prepnation. How can you pick against Winnersville (Valdosta). Considering that Brookwood’s defense is young and inexperienced, you did not carefully think out your prediction instead you just jumped on the Metro Atanta Bandwagon.

Carrollton has played up over the last two weeks and you picked them and they won. So you are on a roll picking Carrollton. Question will the rain help Carrollton more, I think so. Westminster needs the pass game more than CTN. The O and D line will win the game and turnovers.

I believe Eagles Landing has a good shot at beating Peach County. Peach lost a lot of seniors to graduation. Including, there starting qb. Mike Lee may be able to lead his team to a huge upset. The freshman are looking really storng this year. In a couple of years this team may be loaded. Julian Turner is a great defensive back who can make big plays. Jeremy Brantely star kicker may help them to a victory if the game is close. But since the freshman won’t be playing this game will be close. We have faith in our Eagles and they will pull through. So, I’m going against your prediction and saying Eagles Landing will win 24-21.

Eagles Landing(not elca) has a great shot at winning against Peach. Mike Lee is a great running back that can make the big plays. Brock Callahan is a receiver that catches anything that goes his way. Ben Barnes is a force at fullback and linebacker. If these 3 can get help from their teammates, they have a shot. Eagles Landing will win 21-14.

Hey Darryl. Every other sports writer has perdicted Norcross over Grayson so tell us why you are picking Grayson?
Remember Grayson had several injuries to key player last week and will be traveling to Norcross for the devil’s first home game. Remember that Norcross has a strong offense with one of the best passing attacks in the southeast.
So what are you basing your perdiction on?

Let it rain, let it rain——will keep Norcross air attack in check—-Grayson will squeak it out if it is ground pounding clock control type of game. They have their defensive line back. Will stuff the Norcross run. If Norcross goes to the air——Grayson may have problems. Safeties are good, not sure how the corners are looking after injuries. Then there is the kicking game. Back up kicker looks good but does not have the leg the first team kicker has for pushing kickoffs to touchbacks nor can he hit a 40 yarder if need be. Just observations from Peachtree game. —-GO RAMS!

all the other eagles landing fans are right. This team is loaded not just with key players like brock callahan and mike lee. The quaterback, Dylan Shaddix, has learned alot from game to game. and the defense has seen alot too. #6 better be ready. Now is is the eagles turn to shine. and win. it will be close but i strongly believe that the ‘GOLDEN’ Eagles will win 24-14

This game probably means a looooooooooot more to Grayson than Norcross. Grayson has played Norcross down to the wire of late and easily could have eliminated The devils from the playoffs last year. I have a feeling they grow up tonight. Something about knowing you can beat a team as oppossed to wondering. Grayson knows they can beat Norcross.

Hey TJ, Maxie and ME Garyson let you guys down. I tried to tell you guys that PG is not the powerhouse they were last yr because they lost 44 senior.
And Me, thinking or saying you can beat someone is not enough. Norcross not only thinks they can beat Grayson they have done it three straight times in a row and this time was the worst beating yet. At seven minutes to go in the game Norcross was winning 24 to 3 and Grayson was luckly to get the three.
Bad pick Maxie and it was obviously that Norcross was going to win. Grayson either still is hurting from last week’s game or they have no offense.
Maybe we will see you guys again in the playoffs and you can think that you are going to beat us once again.

Hey devil lover congrats on a big win for your team. Congrats to the devils on their big win. Not really much left on the schedule except for a date with the Ridge i think. Hey ME, the devils play PR at their place and then NG the last game on the regular schedule at the devil’s den.
Hey man we have a real passing attach. That is our key. As long as someone lets us pass, it will be hard to stop us.
The devils have scored 102 pts and only given away 22pts in three games. Roswell has scored 90pts and has given away 21pts.
The PR game should be a good one.

Wheeler took it to the Hooch on Friday. Overall, it was a great battle between two high school programs. Hooch definitley used its power running game to wear down the Wildcats defense, but Wheeler made plays when the time called for it. Wheeler’s offense a mixture of a speed running game and passing game were able to keep the hooch on its heels. Corey Towers has to be one of the most electric runners in Cobb County. I cant wait to see how they match up with Roswell again, nothing but speed on the field.

Norcross also looked good friday night beating no. 8 Grayson 24-3. I am hoping the ranking committee might rethink there bais toward roswell over norcross for no.1 for AAAAA.
Last year roswell lost to wheeler and tied the ridge in the final game. norcross beat the ridge and their only lost was to warner robbins in the third round of the playoffs.
This year the devils are 3-0 and just defeated no. 8 Grayson easily. Also, the devils have scored more pts than roswell.
So why doesn’t norcross deserve the no. 1 rating?

Just thought I would log in and say—Grayson did get stomped. Wheel fell off my wagon. Devil Lover called it right. Injuries did Grayson in, they won against Peachtree Ridge but may have hurt them down the road. When I showed up to game I saw Grayson’s sideline and saw their #1 kicker, #1 CB (stopped air attack last year), and #1 RB on bench with no pads and casts. RB should be back soon—-no cast. I knew they were done—-especially with no rain. Hats off to Grayson for trying, second stringers will not cut it against big blue. Not sure what the Grayson coaches were thinking putting a 5ft 6ish sophmore vs. Butler. Then the back up kicker shanked 2. Grayson does play nice run stopping defense!!! I think Norcross only got like 25 yards on the ground. But it was close to 300 in the air. If Grayson does not figure out the CB play soon, they will not win against passing teams. Then there was the special teams—Common Grayson, got to bring it playing #2 in the State!!! Congrats Devils. I said Grayson would be surprise this year (healthy). Would be sweet to watch them play at the dome vs. Norcross—make for a good story!! Guess the question now is who really is #1—Roswell/Norcross?

Hey Maxie,
What is with you and Brookwood. Did you go to school there? All you do is write how good they are. Bottom line they are 0 and 2. Then they played a washed up Valdosta team that won one game last year, opened with a coupel of wins against weak teams this year, and all of a sudden Brookwood is the greatest thing since sliced bread because they beat Valdosta.
Region 1AAAAA is one of the weakest in the state and they only compete against 7 teams in the region to make the playoffs. I believe the top 4 out of the seven get to the playoffs. Brookwood and region 1AAAAA is old school, and so is your coverage of Brookwood.
You need to start coverging Roswell, nothing in the paper on them in the last two weeks, other than a perspective on the community ( nice area, good restaurants, etc), Norcross, Peachtree Ridge, Wheeler, and other good fundemental football teams of today.
New school not old school

The Sleeper Team so far? The Marietta Blue Devils. All but forgotten after last years poor season, the Devils are 3-0 and looking dominant. They have won those games by a combined total of 86-16 points including holding Campbell to Zero last week. Their 2 toughest games? Harrison and North Cobb, both being played at home. Don’t look now, but a 10-0 regular season is not out of reach… Oh by the way, it is the 40th anniversary of the 1967 Marietta State Championship Team.
