Saturday night lights less bright?
The Atlanta Journal-Constitution
Friday nights are special during the fall. They’re what players practice for, coaches prepare for and fans look forward to all week.
But what happens when teams and fans have to trade Friday Night Lights for … Saturday?
It’s a necessity for DeKalb County Public School teams to play Saturday games each week because there are only so many stadiums for them to share, but that doesn’t make it easy for the teams to adjust.
“We lost a lot of our [junior varsity] players on Thursday, which is some of our scout team, so it made practice more challenging,” said first-year Tucker coach Franklin Stephens, whose team beat Marist 30-0 Saturday at Hallford Stadium. “It also gives you a short turnaround. We’re having to work all day today [Sunday] instead of working Saturday and Sunday on a normal week.”
The Tucker-Marist game started about the time South Carolina and Georgia went into the fourth quarter. With so many other events in town, the competition for attention was fierce.
“We’re never going to have as large a crowd on Saturday night as we do on Friday night. That’s just a fact,” Marist coach Alan Chadwick said. “We’ve got softball tournaments and volleyball tournaments. Families are going to the lake. Our student body is tuned into Friday nights more.”
And from a media standpoint, a Marist-Tucker game on Saturday night has to compete with much stiffer competition — Georgia, Georgia Tech, Falcons, Braves, etc. — for newsprint space in the Sunday newspaper.
What do you think? Are you as likely to attend one of your favorite team’s Saturday games as you are their Friday ones? Do you have a problem with high school football being played on Saturdays?

It’s amazing to me that Marist, who just got pounded, by an above average team, gets a bye every time they lose. Chadwick thinks they lost becuase some kids went to the lake?
I was there, John Davis and his boys kicked their butt. They should have scored 10 more, but they ARE kids and screwed up a little when they got close twice.
I wonder what the AJC and Chadwick’s line will be, when somebody like Mays lights them up for 40+. Earthquake? School Dance? Altar Boy Training?

true fans show up and support their team whether the game is played on a friday or saturday.
tucker’s side of the stadium was JAM PACKED… and the marist side was barren…i just think the marist people didnt want to witness such a beating like the one tucker laid down that night.

I’d watch my Hornets Friday or Saturday. In fact, with traffic I’d prefer Saturday night games sometimes.

I played in the Atlanta Public Schools, back then there were 3 stadiums, (Grady, Lakewood, and the old Cheney staidum) which was shared with about 20 high schools. We played at all differetn times, sometimes 5 or 730 on Friday, and Saturdays could be 2:30, 5:00, or 7:30. From a playing standpoint, I dont think it really bothered the players, playing on Friday or Saturday. But it probably does hurt attendance, as kids and fans have more things to do on Saturday and less likely to take in a football game.
And the coaches loved to complain and say it throws their routine out of whack, but u know what, most failed to mention that they take advantage of it and go scouting future opponents.

Buzz is right on about traffic. Saturday much better than Friday travel to games.

I went to school in Atlanta we often played other city schools, Dekalb and Clayton, and we never complained about having a Saturday game. Sometimes it MAY take a lil muster out of the game, but once ball is kicked off, it all feels the same. In most cases the crowd is usually a bit smaller because students have jobs and the adults would rather be at home and relax. Sometimes we would get most complaints out of teams that have their own stadium, and they would use that as a reason to why they lost. But over all, I enjoy Saturday games just as much as Friday games. But like the person said above, TRUE FANS WILL SHOW UP.

To me, it’s obvious why Saturday games don’t draw as large of crowds – college football. Georgia played South Carolina that night, so unless you had a child cheering or playing, why would you go?
Large high school crowds aren’t made up of soley parents and family members. It takes true football fans to produce great atmospheres. And true football fans aren’t going to choose Marist-Tucker over Georgia-South Carolina.

Friday or Saturday nights really don’t make a difference. The schedules are out in plenty of time to plan around other events. Many of the Tucker fans sat with radios or tvs so they could have it all. Some Marist fans began leaving during 3rd quarter instead of supporting the players. Tucker fans always stay until the end regardless of the score. Win or lose! As a Tiger Fan, I just want to say thanks Coach Stephens and your players for making my Saturday night great!!!!!

There’s no “excuse” here, guys. Both the Tucker and Marist coaches said they weren’t thrilled about playing on Saturday, and both said their fans would be much more likely to show up on a Friday night. Neither coach came close to saying it affected his team’s play, only that it wasn’t the idea situation.

The Marist bunch sound like sore loosers. As one person stated the Tucker side was jammed packed and the game being played on Saturday night didn’t seem to have any effect as far as fans not showing up. I don’t believe the score would have being any different if the Marist side was filled up or if the game was played on Friday night. Marist was totally outplayed on both sides of the ball and threatened to score only once all night. Speed seems to always give Marist a problem especially when it is well coached.

Dang…some of us do NOT comprehend well. That coach did not say that was the reason they lost. He was asked a question about Saturday night game crowd turn-outs and he replied to the question. I don’t recall reading that he said or even implied that was the reason they lost. Jesus, people! Even the man who wrote the article has made this point. Hopefully, your jobs do not require you to have to comprehend written directions!!!!!!!!!!!

Of course Tucker would have a larger crowd. Marist has 750 students in the high school. There is probably almost the same number in one class at Tucker. Again, there was no excuse offered by either coach. Jeff, you may need an interpreter when you write articles that consist of more than the concept of who won and who lost. Maybe audio could be placed on here for those with poor comprehension to avoid posts that do not pertain to the article or do not answer the key question of the blog!!

Of the two coaches, the only one whose quote you could possibly interpret as saying Saturday affected his team’s play is Stephens at Tucker, since he talked about how different Thursday practice was. But since his team won 30-0, I think we can safely say he’s not making any excuses, just commenting on the differences of playing on Saturdays vs. Fridays. All Chadwick is talking about is the size of his team’s crowd and the tendencies of his fanbase.
I also wouldn’t say Tucker’s side was “jam-packed.” It was pretty crowded in the middle, but the sides of the stands were almost completely wide open. That’s not to knock on Tucker fans at all. They showed up in excellent numbers, as did Marist’s. It’s just to say I’m not sure the idea that Tucker’s fans were more loyal attendees than Marist’s doesn’t really ring true. The unedited version of the blog even had a sentence that talked about how both sides of the stands looked pretty decently full.

why dont the ajc give tucker some respect we beat marist 30-0 and all we can talk about is who had the most fans what about tucker getting almost 5-8 yards almost everytime they touch the ball, maybe if marist won they would have had it on the front page show us some love ajc

High schoolers live for Friday night
The bye week itself is hard enough to deal with, let alone playing on a Saturday night and what has become popular in tournaments, 11:45 in the morning!
The NFL and NCAA have already messed up their schedules with Thursdays, lets not do the same with Saturdays

coach junior-
Your question is pretty much addressed in the blog. The fact is, if you play on a Saturday, you’re simply not going to get the media attention you would on a Friday. Too much competition. I did cover the game, and we did have a story, but it was buried somewhat behind college and NFL coverage in Sunday’s paper.

To the guy who thinks Tucker has 750 students in one class, GET REAL. Tucker’s enrolment is about 1150. Anyway 30% of the people at the game was Tucker alumni.

Since you are correcting others, Tucker’s enrollment is actually 1483. Dang, did you think maybe the blogger was using a little sarcasm? So basically, Tucker has twice the enrollment as the other school. Guess that would account for more people.

Uh why don’t the schools host fundraisers and stuff to build proper stadiums in these places instead of the share share until it falls apart. A school should be able to raise $1 million for a proper stadium. There should be a mandate all HS football on Friday nights. End of discussion.

It’s usually a gurantee that any SWD home game will be packed…Friday or Saturday, doesn’t matter.

Nobody doesn’t complain about NOT having stadiums, so that’s why nobody has gotten together to fund raise for stadiums. WHY? Spend a whole lot money for stadiums in very close tight urban areas, when you can play for free in a stadium every year. Just like Rattler said about SWD, it’s the same way across the city at Doug, no matter what day it is. Friday or Saturday, Lakewood home side will be packed.
