Fantasy football: Gwinnett vs. the state; QB updates

I’m tired of fighting my alleged Gwinnett bias and have decided to embrace it.

Gwinnett has more talent than any other county in Georgia and is the only county worthy of coverage.

Think I’m wrong? You’re right, but prove it.

Each week during the season, my esteemed colleague Kurt Aschermann and I will each draft a fantasy team made up of strictly Gwinnett high school players.

We will draft one QB, two RBs, two WRs and a defense.

You can participate by forming your own team made up of players from any other county … heck, the entire state for all I care. My team will still be better.

Simply post your team (QB, 2 RBs, 2 WRs and a defense) on Wednesday’s or Thursday’s blog. (Due to a late start, this week we will take submissions up until noon Friday.)

Kurt and I will select one reader’s team based on the creativeness of their screen name. (Hint: Crudeness will not be rewarded. Mentioning my Sooners or Saints might)

The chosen team will be posted on Friday’s blog along with Kurt and my teams. If your team out-scores the experts—both of us—then you win a shirt out of one of our closets. Try hard because we’ve got some dope threads. We pick the shirt.

The scoring system is below and will be adjusted to benefit the experts throughout the year.

Passing

100-200 yards — 6

200-300 yards — 9

More than 300 - 15

Rushing/Receiving

50-99 yards — 6

100-150 — 9

151-199 — 12

More than 200 — 15

Rushing/Receiving/Passing TDs — 6

Defense: Every point the opposing team scores is subtracted from your total.

Results will be posted on Tuesday’s blog.

Gwinnett QB updates

Just callNorcross coach Keith Maloof Charlie Weis. Neither Maloof nor Weis is revealing who will be their starting quarterback for their season openers.

“You’ll find out Friday night,” said Maloof, whose second-ranked Blue Devils open at Duluth Friday.

I was almost certain senior Nick Sorel would be the guy last week. But it seems like Maloof wouldn’t mind announcing that a senior had won the job. Junior Charles King is the other candidate. With those receivers, does it really matter?

Senior Taylor Smith will start at quarterback for Dacula. Senior Ryan Meyer, who is recovering from knee surgery, has returned to practice, but would only be used at quarterback in an emergency situation. Junior Hunter Watts was in the mix, before breaking his collarbone in a scrimmage against Grayson.

At Wesleyan, junior Brent Pugh will start, but sophomore Conor Welton will have his chance in the first four series against Dawson County.

I’m at Dawson County-Wesleyan Friday. Come up and give me a hug. I’ll be the bald, sweaty guy.

Citi … Gwinnett has 16 players already committed to D-I programs this season and something like 25 last year. How many does DeKalb have?

i dont know the exact number, but here r sum off the top of my; head mlk has 5 alone on its squad, chamblee has 2 or 3, stone mountain has charles reeves goin 2 tennessee yea rocky top, ceadar grove has 2, and o yea tucker has 3 or 4, there are other schools who will have a few. eventhough, stepheson and mcnair will be great there prospect numers will be down.because, they have mostly juniors on its roster but look out for them next year. i am not sayin gwinett is not talented. norrcros looks great so does buford. but dont disrespect dekalb/atlanta/s.fulton or even cobb or any other regoin in georgia; by saying gwinett only deserves coverage. because, hey man this georgia there is not 1 dominant region in the state there is talant all over the state, even in small areas.also, rivals.com said out of the top 5 schools in georgia prospect wise were westlake, stepheson, and tucker.also, historically dekalb has more supper 11 players then any other county in the state case close

If Dekalb has all these great players why don’t the schools there ever win anything?

Dekalb does not win because they are individuals and not teams.

DP—-brave move on draft, you should win alot. Grayson has Sophmore RB named Ean Pemberton, might be surprise to everyone. Then take Brookwood’s Terence Davis or whoever is starting at Norcross at QB. Norcross QB can just air it out, those receivers will catch everything. Might want to draft them too. Good luck in your endeavor.

because dekalb/atlanta schools dont have the support and facilties. and anyone who grew up in the hood or inner city anywhere in the united states will know that those schools have even better taent then the guys who actually play some platers get lost to the streets jail or drop out to support there family cedar grove is a prime example now the great coach bonner has them displine and the students has bought into his system. of that mcnair washington used to have this problem but now there coaches are winning over players showing them a better life is possible i am sure gwinett are not lossing any players to the mean “streets of gwinett” lol.

David, WHY did you make this blog. lol. We all know Gwinnett breed their players and all the teams were playing together since they was 6. So don’t you think that would give them a slight advantage over schools around here. OH YEA! Every school has 2,000+ students. That’s a deep talent pool right there. Oh yea, the facilites issue, those schools would rival a small college. Everything is handed on a silver platter up there. But you know what. Tht’s still no reason for anybody else anywhere to loose. We just gotta work harder. Because we all know, how many players from Gwinnett actually reach the big time.

Gwinnett gets the players from dekalb and atlanta. Look at the basketball players and most of the football players. half of them are not from gwinnett. need I say more.

50-60 kids on bowl game rosters each of the last two years. 2 of the top 15 D-1 preseason ranked RBs last year in Walker and Irons. 2 first round draft choices the year prior in Green and Pollack, 10 pros and 11 if Darius gets picked up. Feeder youth systems that are better then most in the country not just GA (and thats not just a stab) Football mania in most communities. A tremendous amount of D1-AA and d2, 3 scholarships. If anyone actually did the research they’d have stories on Gwinnetts football production - its more then a hotbead.

It took me a lot of research and 3 years coaching in the youth programs and following the HS programs to gain the respect I did for this county - because I come from the best HS in the country for sports and you can watch them at 12 on ESPN today.

But pit OH best against the top 6 teams in Gwinnett - we’d win the royale. Funny and none are nationally ranked - one day someone will figure it out.

We’ll pull Stephenson in with us — because they do produce D-1 guys very well.

Gwinnett County has the largest school system in the state. It seems reasonable they have more talent. If you cast in a lake with more fish you net a better quality catch. I’m not from Gwinnett County, but I’m just sayin’…

It starts with the youth league. You won’t find a better organized, better funded youth football organization in the state or probably the country than the Gwinnett Football league. Most counties around this area group ages together. 7 and 8 year olds, or 8 and 9 year olds playing together. What happens most of the time when you have age differences, most of the time you have size, strength, and speed differences as well. If little Johnny is a QB and he is 8, and little Will is a QB and he is 9, and both are average for their age, most likely Johnny will have to sit the bench for a year. If he has to sit the bench every other year, because he is playing behind Will, Johnny just lost about 3 to 4 years playing/development time. That matters alot when you get to high school, facing someone whoeven though both of you have been playing 6 or 7 years. You have started every other year and the opposing player started every year. For those of you outside of Gwinnett, how many Coaches clinics do your Little League Coaches go to? As an Youth assistant coach last year for 9 year olds, I attended 6, 2 hour long clinics put on by the high school coaches at North Gwinnett. They provided handouts, booklets with diagrams, and even VHS tapes of drills to make our players better.

Gwinnett has more talent than DeKalb…..yea right most of the black players from G-County schools are from dekalb…Caleb King, Brad Lester, Cam Smith..the list goes on..not one DeKalb or Atlanta Public school has their own stadium and the financial backing that the “powerhouse” gwinnett teams have. Give DeKalb county the money and facilities, and the support. Its gave over period..
