7 over/unders for the 2007 Gwinnett football season

1. Over/under Meadowcreek wins: 1/2

Come on, Mustangs. Make this the year your 32-game losing streak comes to an end.

Prediction: Under

2. Over/under Parkview wins: 6

Coming off the first losing season in coach Cecil Flowe’s illustrious career, the Panthers have plenty to prove.

Prediction: Over

3. Over/under Brookwood wins: 6

After a difficult offseason, the Broncos must replace 10 starters on defense.

Prediction: Under

4. Over/under Peachtree Ridge wins: 13

The 2006 Lions set the bar pretty high for new coach Bill Ballard. The Ridge certainly has the talent to back up last year’s AAAAA co-title. But do they have the quarterback?

Prediction: Under

5. Over/under Norcross wins: 13

Last year’s 12 wins was the most in school history.

Prediction: Under

6. Over/under Buford wins: 14

As good as Peachtree Ridge is supposed to be, the county’s best defense may live in Buford.

Prediction: Over

7. Over/under state championships won by Gwinnett teams: 1 1/2

Buford, Peachtree Ridge, Norcross are bona fide contenders.

Prediction: Under

Watch out for a sleeper team in Cherokee County. Woodstock Wolverines are going to surprise a lot of people.

JC … What’s the over/under on Woodstock’s wins?

You really think Brookwood will win less than 6 games? The Broncos always have turnover on the defense, I don’t recall it ever being a problem.

I think North Gwinnett will win alot of games again this year. Last season was incredible and we had a Sophmore QB and it was Coach Sphire’s first year there.

Nathan … Actually I think the Broncos will win exactly six, but I definitely don’t think this will be a typical year at Brookwood.

Tim … I’m a big believer in Sphire, but just don’t know if there’s enough talent surrounding Tamburo, the junior QB, for the Bulldogs to repeat last year’s success.

AFTER DEFENSIVE CAMP AT THE UNIVERSITY OF WEST GEORGIA, I CAN TELL YOU NORTH GWINETT IS PRETTY DAMN SOFT ON THE DEFENSIVE LINE. I PANCAKED ALL THREE NOSE GUARDS STARTING WITH THE BIG WHITE BOY. PEACHTREE RIDGE IS ALRITE, THEY HAVE SPEED ON THE DEFENSIVE LINE WHICH ALWAYS HELPS, BUT I DONT SEE THEM WINNING STATE.. HONESTLY THE NEXT BEST TEAM TO CAMDEN THAT WAS THERE HAD TO BE CHATTAHOOCHEE, (NOTE I REALLY DONT HAVE A CLUE HOW TO SPELL THAT)BUT I DONT SEE A STATE CHAMPION FROM GWINETT IN AAAAA THIS YEAR, SORRY GUYS.

Don’t doubt Dacula this year David. After losing 34 seniors last year everyone thought they would struggle. The Falcons finished 10-2 losing in the state playoffs to state runner-up Marist in a game that even Marist’s fans, coaches, and players admitted they were lucky to win (14-7 with Dacula missing 3 field goals and driving to the 10 yard line before time expired). Dacula will be better than last year. Kevin Maloof, who is the best coach in the county bar none, will have the Falcons ready as always.

Dacula … You don’t have to convince me about Maloof. I was there when he coached the Falcons past top-ranked Camden in the ‘05 quarterfinals. But I’m not sure he’s got the quarterback to work his magic with this season.

What is your reasoning for Brookwood only winning 6 games? Who are they losing to? They have a tough first couple of games, but that will only make them better come region play…I just don’t see it. Who do you have winning region 8?

By Farsider

I admit I am surprised you’ve got Brookwood winning 6 games or less this season. I assume this is based on their tough schedule, new QB and brand new defense. But if their defense reloads and the new QB gets it done—-I believe this team could accomplish much, much more than some people think. Time will tell.

BBFan, Farsider … Grayson’s the favorite in Region 8, with Parkview, Brookwood and Central or Berkmar battling for the remaining playoff spots.

Unfortunately for Bwood fans, I see them staring 0-3 and needing to win 2 of their last 3 against Grayson, Central and Parkview to get to six wins. Right now, I’d say Grayson and Parkview would be the favorites over Brookwood.

It’s your column and I respect your opinion whether I agree with it or not. But Brookwood has quite a few offensive playmakers, all-around athletes and a stout o-line. Obviously Broncos have rebuilding to do defensively but they’ve done it before. Grayson will be competitive but in my opinion they’re a year away from contending for region crown.

By BBFan

I know the Broncos have some question marks, but what exactly does Grayson have? We all know that region 8 is won in the trenches and that is the one experienced area for the Broncos.

This may be T. Davis’ first year at QB, but we all know he ‘s not going to be asked to lead the charge with his arm. He is an unbelievable athlete…you combine that with Brice Smith at FB and Kenny Miles at RB behind a massive O-line and I think the Broncos will be just fine.

The defense will have a lot of new faces, but when was the last time the Broncos weren’t at the top of the county in that area. Like I said, it could be my Snellville bias, but I just don’t see this team going in the tank and only winning 6 games this year.

Davidp, What is your take on Collins Hill?

By Robert Wood

August 3, 2007 9:42 AM | Link to this

Davidp, What is your reasoning for having Grayson so high? How are they going to score? They have no exp.QB and their rb that did well last year dont have the grades. Explain to me how they score?

By David P.

August 3, 2007 12:27 PM | Link to this

Robert … I expect to see the same old Collins Hill team: solid defensively, unspectacular offensively. I like their QB (McDonald) and understand there’s a talented young RB. I’ll say 5-5 for the Eagles.

From what I understand, Grayson’s strength is up front, which can make almost any running back look good. It’s not that I believe the Rams are going to be some offensive juggernaut, but they’ll be solid on defense and steady on offense.

The Broncos will be just fine they have some work to do at certain areas but with that massive o-line and speed of miles, they will turn some heads this season as for Grayson as far as I know The Bronco JV(Upcoming Juniors) demolished them last year.

Just wanted to remind everyone that last season Grayson hammered Parkview, should have won at Bwood and took Norcross to double-overtime in the playoffs.

By BBFan

August 3, 2007 1:15 PM | Link to this

The Brookwood v Grayson game from last season took place AT Grayson and as far as should of won…thats a ridiculous statement, they didn’t win. Brookwood should of won vs. Roswell, but they didn’t and thats all that counts.

Grayson’s strength probably will be upfront, but that doesn’t mean its better than anyone else’s front. It seems like you have based your predictions on things that almost happened last season as opposed to what the teams have for this season.

Grayson has to travel to Brookwood this season and could very well beat the Broncos, but until they win a big game in someone elses house I’m not buying the Rams as Region 8 Champs. I’m not saying Brookwood will win the Region, but they will definitely get more than 6 wins.

By David P.

August 3, 2007 1:36 PM | Link to this

Whoops … my bad, you’re right it was at Grayson. And, to be honest, I wasn’t at that game, but I was told the Rams severly out-played Bwood. Were you there, BBFan? Is that true?

Anyway … valid points. Until I see what Bwood puts on the field this year, I have to base my prediction on what each team has returning from last season. And, as of now, Grayson has more.

We might be sleeping on Central. RB Drake is explosive and you know Coach Roland will find a way to put points on the board, which, as we’ve discussed, could be problem for a lot of the team in the region.

It seems like your giving the least possible performance from every team. Collins Hill 5-5? Brookwood under 6 wins? I think that is the worst possible for these teams in their seasons.

Gwinnett Fan … I’m simply looking at the schedule and predicting which games they’ll lose and which games they’ll win. Collins Hill has to play Norcross, Peachtree Ridge, Valdosta, Gryason and North Gwinnett. To me, those are all losses. Bwood has to play Roswell, North Gwinnett, Valdosta, Grayson and Parkview. Those look like losses to me.
