I’d say that list is just about right. I think if I had to add a #6 today, it would be Peachtree Ridge.

The number of former Stephenson players currently playing college ball is absurd. I think it’s in the neighborhood of 18. That’s only players on current rosters. If you tossed in past college players, I suspect the number would be in the trillions, at least.

I think you would have to consider the defending AAAAA state champs, Northside, and their cross-town rival, Warner Robins. Lowndes County and Valdosta have had their fair share. North Clayton consistently has top prep stars as well.

I would have to say that STEPHENSON HIGH SCHOOL does produce grade A football players!

You would be hard pressed to keep Buford off of a top 5 list. Since 2000 they have had more D-1 signees than any Gwinnett school I believe.

The talent level might not be the same but it seems every year Northgate is near the top in number of D-1 signees. This year Mike Davis full ride to Memphis the same can be said for Andre Morris to Air Force and TJ Jackson to Northeastern. While at the same time Ty Statham will be attempting to walk on at GT. No its not your big name recruits and they dont take any state titles with them but they compete here and at a national level. In the past weve seen Zach Peterson, Army, Carson Bird, Air Force, and countless others. If the list were expanded Northgate could in my opinion land in the top 15.

I’d be SW DeKalb would be top 5 if you’re looking at total numbers and not just blue-chip or Division I guys. There have been 33 in the past 5 seasons.
But for school size, I think it’s Buford. Here are just the D-1 guys since 2000. I don’t have the latest season handy.
2000 1. P.K. Sam-Florida State
2001 1. Aaron Scranton-UGA 2. Lorne Sam-Florida State
2002 1. Mikey Henderson-UGA 2. Trey Chandler-UGA
2003 1. Darius Walker-Notre Dame 2. Zach Smith-Duke 3. Ryan Wood-Duke 4. Kyle Manley-Ga. Tech 5. Shun Williams-UAB 6. Neil Brown-Auburn
2004 1. Yvan Banag-South Carolina 2. Thor Merrow-West Virginia 3. Patrick McGlon-Troy
2005 1. Steven Singleton-LSU 2. Matt Pridemore-Duke 3. Justin Roper-Oregon

Always a star prospect at Dacula, Marist, GAC , as well as any podunk school in South GA.

How is Westlake not No. 1? I read somewhere there are more former Westlake players in the NFL than any other high school in the country (and this was before PacMan Jones)…that’s tough to beat. But Jeff is right, it does seem like Stephenson has kids on every roster in the country. Washington is another school with highly talented kids. Even Meadowcreek has put a lot of kids into programs. There are so many schools just in the metro area where talent is rich that a top 5 doesn’t do it justice…

Hello, did anybody forget Douglas High School? We had 14 D-1 signing’s in 2001. If you need the list ask me. I have it in my yearbook. A couple of years ago they had 8 D-1 signings I believe. So that’s about as deep as any school on that list. But by far the list does speak for itself. Those are football factory programs.

Hey, even though it is of late. Pound for pound clinch county high school may be up there. Alot of good ball players from this part of the state. Charlton County has to be in there also. Anyone remember the bailey boys But yeah, the list is right on the money.

Coach Gartrell (Steph) works hard to stay in contact with D1 & D2 coaches. During evaluation period 4-5 coaches a day are at the school. What we give up in championships we certainly make up for with our kids attending college for free.

At the end of the day it all comes down to coaching. Stephenson has one of the best staff, that is comprised mostly of community coaches working for free. The school produces nothing but phenoms. The weight training program is second to none. As long as the staff stays in tact, you can say Stephenson is going to be a contender. Quick Question? Who is the greatest player to ever come out of Stephenson? Top three: Kregg Lumpkin, Marcus Ball, Jermaine Cunningham. Tucker and SWD are some more schools school with fine recruiting pipeline… The list goes on and on.

That’s a great question but the jury is still out on the younger two. However if Marcus can stay healthy, he is one heck of an athlete. To play DE at the next level, Jermaine will have to put on a lot more weight than he has. Kregg will go in next year’s draft but probably in rounds 5-7.

Cartersville has to be considered with the athletes they currently have playing college. Remember, Ronnie Brown was the 2nd pick in the draft 3 yrs ago and next year Andre Fluellen (FSU) is projected as a 1st round pick in the NFL draft. Not too many 3-A schools have players drafted in the NFL. Not too mention, the players at UGA & Tech from Cartersville. And with Donovan Tate & Morgan Alexander (two of the best juniors in the state) on the horizon, Cartersville will continue to send prospects to D1 Schools.

I would have to give Stephenson & Tucker its props / however if we are looking at the past 6 years, Buford should be in the top five schools. I think the quality of colleges these kids are being sent to should also matter. Buford has place kids @ (SC-GA-GT-DUKE-WV-AURBURN-OREGON-NC-ND-FSU-LSU)as well as (FUR-UAB-GSouthern-UTC-Valdosta-Troy) in the pat 6 years. This speaks volumes for a Gwinnett County School (2A)at that.
