GSWA Basketball Poll: Feb. 13
The Atlanta Journal-Constitution
Two weeks ago, Whitefield Academy got everyone’s attention with a 71-39 win over defending Class A champion Southwest Atlanta Christian. It was the Wolfpack’s statement game. Saturday, the Mableton school ended the regular season with an exclamation point. Whitefield traveled to Columbus and defeated Class AAA No. 6 Carver. Coach Tyrone Johnson loaded his schedule with some top in-state and out-of-town teams to prepare for another run at the finals. The tough schedule seems to be paying off with the region tournament now in full swing. Griffin has awakened in time and should be one of the most dangerous teams in the tournament. The Bears grabbed first place on their side of the Region 4-AAAA subregion.

Once again this week you have Armuchee girls listed in AA top 10 and Model girls left out. Don’t forget that Armuchee is 1 out of 4 in tough games, with 2 of their 3 losses coming from Model, including a 25 point loss!

Where is Pickens County Girls? They are 21-4 and ranked #8 in the gasports.com poll. They won the 7B-AAA sub region. You have a team ranked that has been beaten 3 times by opponents in the same region. Pickens has only lost 1 game vs someone in their region and that was East Hall.

OK Derrick, hopefully you’ll make plans to be at Miller Grove HS this week for the 6 AAAA regional playoffs. I feel comfortable in saying you will probably see 3-4 final four participants playing. The consolation and championship games will be held on Saturday. Hope to see you there!
I’m also rooting for the boys Atomsmashers from Johnson HS in Savannah. Beach is probably the leading favorite from that area however I’d like to see teams from the Coastal area do well.

Fayette lost to North Clayton twice, and play in a weaker region, and jumped Riverdale and Westlake in the rankings?

Nobody cares about Fayette! When was the last time they made it out of the first round? How many championship banners do they have? I just want to know how a team(Fayette)loses to another team(North Clayton) and is ranked ahead of them son!

In the last message, I left out the word “twice” after “loses to another team.”

The Marietta Blue Devils Men’s team is on the rise. After losing four early games they have won their last ten with wins over Wheeler (17 pt.margin) and McEachern (twice). They are very TEAM oriented and it will be very interesting to see them roll towards the title. I don’t know how far, but I like their chances.

Lithia Springs boys beat Osborne last night (2/14) in an awesome game. They play Alexander on Friday night (2/17) at 7:30pm at Cherokee HS. They are UNDEFEATED in their region. It does not matter who starts, the LSHS lions bench is awesome.

Lithia is strong and seem to be getting better as the season rolls along. I was at the game last night, and you’re right, there is no drop-off when the bench comes in. Last night’s game was incredible to watch.Devron(sp?) -#23- is so fun to watch. He is so athletic and a game-changer.Cross your fingers for a Lithia/Cherokee rematch.

And Lion Supporter…….I guess we shouldn’t be proud of our undefeated region season, because the guy who puts the polls together a couple of weeks ago stated that our region stinks so basically it doesn’t mean a whole lot. So that is why they ranked Cherokee ahead of us even though they are in the same stinky region and we beat them. Who knew???

During the course of a 20+ game season, some of the better teams will not have a pretty record. Some of that is do to the fact that some regions are stronger than others and scheduling. When I place my vote, that is something I look at. A pretty record may grab my attention, but I look at the region teams are in and the non-region schedule.I have seen most of the teams in Region 6-AAAA, and feel that is the strongest AAAA in the state. Talk to any coach and they will say the same thing. Fact, the state champion has come from that region the last three years and in 2003 South Atlanta (which is a produce of that region) played for the state title. If you look at both polls, they are almost similar with teams flip-flop in some order or the team you are rooting for is in the other poll, but only receiving minimum votes in the GSWA poll. I still think Cherokee is a solid team with potential to go far. I saw Lithia Springs Saturday and thought they were good, but I don’t think they are 20-2 playing in Region 6-AAAA. I remember three seasons ago Woodland was 27-2 and their fans were all upset because they weren’t ranked. They played Mays in the second round of the playoffs. The Raiders played their worst game of the season and won 64-39. I can’t speak for the other nine voters, but I also look at other factors beside record. I still think that some of the teams like -Randolph-Clay - will be around the playoffs for a few rounds. Wheeler is still a top 10 team, and has earned the respect. Marietta was one of those team that our Cobb writer Todd Holcomb has been telling me about all season. I was waiting on a quality win to vote for them. Hey, you only get ten (10) slots on your ballot. You just have to make a decision on which ten you feel are the best in each class. I’ve talked coaches over the course of the season who said they agree with the GSWA poll and the process in which we exchange information to inform each other of the teams in their area. If fact, several coaches said they don’t vote in the coaches poll because they don’t know about the other teams in the state. They say their focus right now is own their team and they will worry about the rest when, and if, the time comes. Again, thanks for your comments and suggestions.

GOOD LUCK THOMASVILLE BULLDOGS.
They play the Randolph-Clay Red Devils tonight in Thomasville for the Region 1-AA Championship. Both teams are ranked 1 and 2, repectively, in this week’s GSWA Class AA polls. Thomasville has beaten Randolph-Clay both times in Region play, 87-73 and 78-74. I will be a great game to get them ready for the State Tournament. The rest of AA needs to beware. Both teams will be making a lot of noise in this year’s AA state tournament. And it is a strong possibility that both teams could play against each other again after tonight’s game. That would be in the State Finals. And while on it’s run to the Finals, I know the ‘Dawgs would love to run into the Fighting Irish of Dublin (Region 4-AA) and get a little revenge from last year’s AA State Championship Game. Sick ‘Em Dawgs!!!**

Whitewater Highschool in Fayette, County Georgia is in it’s third year of existence. However, last night Whitewater defeated McIntosh in order to place third in its division of 2AAAA. Whitewater has played close games against Fayette, County (ranked number four state wide, and Westlake (ranked number 6 statewide). The consistent weapon on Whitewater’s team is a senior guard and small forward, Trey Scales. When Trey has a great game Whitewater wins, when Trey has a mediocre game, Whitewater looses. However, folks in that part of Fayette, County appear to caught up in some old school politics as they continue to use the media and sports communication only to market and position players that have been in “the program” since the inception of Whitewater and/or have been a part of recreation sport prior to Whitewater- The Blue.
It is very unfortunate that parents, boosters, and small town newspapers are able to push levels of influence that could continue biases that would impact the educational opportunities for students not in the click or in the “minority” level of influences in the county.
In the best interest of marketing the school and the sports program, the community should be more concerned with what athletes have the most potential to further their education and become successful in their fields of endeavor. This will provide the Whitewater the opportunity to brag and say _ was a graduate of our program, and put this little small town school on the map.
Let’s leave the 1950’s and “Remember the Titans” in the past. Let’s see what happens next Saturday when Whitewater, only in its third year, moves on to the State Basketball championship. But I guarantee,if Trey Scales does not have a good game, Whitewater will be comming home early in the tournament.

This past Friday night saw the #2 ranked Randolph-Clay Red Devils play #1 ranked Thomasville Bulldogs for the Region 1-AA Championship.Thomasville can out of the lockerroom in some type of smoke, but when it all settled down and was clear RC had won the Region Championship 88-83.THE STREAK IS OVER!!!!!!Thomasville had won 26 in a row,but it still doesn’t stand up the the Ga. State High record of 90 held by RCHS!!! RC had the lead from horn to horn, baby…Yes, it’s true.Thomasville has beaten RCHS twice this year, and we’ll meet again for the State crown to even the score @ 2-2..RCHS will win the ones that count. We don’t have a “legendary” Coach with over 950 wins for nothing..I’m smelling Macon, what about you’ll..RCHS is ballin’…Please don’t forget about our 26-0 undefeated #2 ranked Lady Red Devils..Our kids work hard to be successful. This could be the year that both of our teams bring the AA State Crowns to Cuthbert..”We need bofus”…

Thanks for the props for Region 6 AAAA! Without question, when the #1 teams in the state (Columbia boys and St. Pius girls) are playing in the region finals (boys and girls), you know you’ve got something special. What makes it especially interesting is when the opponents are the #2 (Tucker boys) and #9 (SWD girls) teams in the state.
I picked 7 of the 8 teams that will participate in the state playoffs, with the Mays boys a surprise with their upset of Miller Grove. I stand by my earlier prediction, I believe 3-4 of these teams will be in the final 4. Heck, the #3 boys at Stone Mountain (#6 in the state) can surpise may teams in the state playoffs.
I give the DeKalb AD Charlie Henderson a call. GHSA may present several state championships in our county this year.

I see no love here for the Manchester Blue Devils, ranked as high as #2 in coaches polls. How can you guys ignore the 800 lb gorilla in the room? Washington-Wilkes gets it first this week, and then the rest of AA needs to watch out. This is a team with 10 (!) solid contributors capable of 15+ per game, and they are absolutely bloodthirsty on defense. OK, I’m a homer, but I think it’s highly unlikely that there’s a AA Final Four without the Manchester Blue Devils.

It has always been clear in our girls’ minds, but now that the Model Lady Blue Devils have knocked off Armuchee for a 3rd time in 4 meetings this year, there is NO doubt that Model is the better team! So let’s put these Region 7-AA champs back in the polls where they belong! Good Luck Ladies. We love you, Kendall Davis (#35)!!

Well I hate to say I told you so, but my the comments that I posted on Feb. 18 appeared to be gospel. Whitewater High School was defeated by Statesboro High School. However, it wasn’t that Trey Scales didn’t have a good game, he was very effective in the paint scoring off the dribble and his usually number of assist to Jay Bright and Zach Scurry. What is in question is why Trey Scales sat on the bench most of the second quarter and most of the fourth quarter. Whitewater was down by 12 points in the fourth quarter when Trey finally came back in the game off the bench. He immediately scored six points and had three assists and a steal. Well it was a little to late the excellent coaching of Stateboro kept baskets falling on the other end of the court.
The coach from Statesboro was overheard speaking with some of the parents from Statesboro after the game saying that he was glad that number 3 (Trey Scales) wasn’t in the game longer. He stated “That kid was really hurting us….”
