GSWA Basketball Poll: Feb. 6

Greater Atlanta Christian girls team finally wrestled the top spot in the poll from Avondale with its win over the second-ranked Blue Devils last week.

This will make for an interesting Region 6-AA tournament with No. 6 Wesleyan still posing a threat. GAC was the only team to take over a top spot in the poll.

Fayette County boys played well while leading scorer Noel Johnson was out nursing an ankle injury. With his return, the Tigers have kicked it up a notch.

Johnson, one of the top sophomores in the country, has averaged 24.6 points over the last five games as the No. 6 Tigers are contending for the Region 2-AAAA championship.

It seems Whitefield Academy is peaking at the right time. Saturday’s 71-39 win over defending Class A champions Southwest Atlanta Christian was definitely an attention grabber.

Yo, big fan, I’ve seen Douglass and Morrow. As a matter of fact I saw both of them at the Peach State at the end of December and I think Morrow may have a slightly better team, though not by much. Doug has some good young players Kallidah Miller in particular, Morgan Jennings is an exceptional athlete and plays hard, and the Anderson girl is tough (though undersized for 5A) in the post. I think Morrow has a little more experience and depth. I hate to say it, but I also think Douglass’ coaching has a little to be desired. But as far as the city goes, other than Mays, the basketball is weak from the fundamentals stand point and coaching, Southside and North Atlanta are decent. but both lack depth and skilled, fundamental basketball players. But 5A is a mute point anyway, that’s Maya Moore’s party and everyone else is just an invited guest. Stephenson, South Gwinnett, and possibly Mill Creek are the only ones that have a glimmer of hope.

I somewhat agree on the coach thing but I think that she coaches to what she have. her plays seem to be for a big in the middle

How do you keep the Greenville Patriots Girls out of the top ten in single A @ 19-1? I thought this were GHSA not the WNBA where style points counts.

How are the Franklin Boys not in the AAA top 10? Last week they pounded the then 5th ranked Hart County team to improve to 19-3.

Derrick:

Looks like the SWD Lady Panthers are FINALLY getting some love from the sportwriters in the latest poll. The question still remains above this ‘love jones’ they have for Marist. Marist has lost twice to Mays, once to St. Pius, and once to SWD. I know you question the strength of our subregion however why is Marist ranked higher than Mays by two spots? I’m not ‘hatin’ on Marist but inquiring minds want to know.

BTW, SWD at St. Pius this Friday (2/9). IMO, the results of this game will tell us who the queens of 6 AAAA (and perhaps all of AAAA) are. Bring your photographer with you Derrick. It’s sure to be a barn burner.

Hold on ernest dont over look 4A&4B-AAAA we have just as good of teams in this region as well. Me myself i am a die hard North Clayton Eagles fan. We just finish the regular season with a record of 20 - 5 with a sub-region title not bad i guess! We beat some really good teams Campbell, SWD, (2)Jones County, and (2)Jonesboro. We will see who is the real queen of 4-AAAA only time will tell…

Smith:

Props definitely should go to the Clayton County teams! You are correct, North Clayton is the ONLY AAAA team SWD has lost to all season. Maybe the queens of AAAA will come from one of your schools however (I’m biased) I believe this is the year for DeKalb County to reign.

BTW, do you have any information about your regional tournament? It should be a good one. FWIW, I understand the 6 AAAA regional tournament will be held at Miller Grove HS. I’m trying to get the details on how the brackets will work.

Terrell County Girls as well as Seminole County Girls split with Calhoun County during the season and are all tied for first in 1A-W. They will be tough outs for playoff foes this season. It would not surprise me if two of them make it to Macon.

Marietta should be ranked in the top five, with a 17 point win over Wheeler and a season sweep over McEachern. They have really stepped it up with their pressure defense, which gives everybody trouble.

Don’t rule the boys out from 3-AAAAA. Watch out for Beach High tournament time with Seasoned Coach Russell Ellington @ the helm. This is the same team that made it to the finals last year (Norcross). There’s more basketball in the state outside of the parameter of 285. See ya tournament time.

Fayette Co. is ranked because they can hoop, Fayette lost to creekside by one point at creekside and Fayette didn’t have their leading scorer and they didn’t have their second leading scorer because of ankle and foot injuries…Fayette did win the game that was at Fayette Co. though. Also creekside has 9 loses and Fayette has 5.

Region 5AAAAA is the toughest region in the state. There are 5 teams ranked in the top 10 of the state. Campbell, Marietta, Etowah and McEachern are all tough athletic teams. Dont forget about SCobb. The Lady Eagles have batteled all year long with these teams, beating McEachern and NCobb twice. Losing to Mceachern by 4 the second time around and almost beating Campbell both times. If this team gets out of that tough region, they will be ready to contend in the state.

Griffin was not preseason ranked #2 in 4a and 10 overall for nothing. since they’ve gotten all their players back they have looked great. they are definitely a team that nobody wants to meet in the playoffs. Because of their amazing size power speed and quickness there are not many teams in the state that are going to match up with them. so class 4a better watch out cause the griffin bears are looking like a championship team.

FRANKLIN COUNTY BOYS deserve a top 10 ranking. They pounded then 5th ranked HART CO. by 20 for the second time this year. They have received votes but just can’t get in the top 10. Why??? They are 19-3 and undefeated in region play. Take note of the Sophomore point guard—6’4” and can score at will. This team will be very dangerous in the State Tournament!!!!!!!!!!!

watch out for the Fayete Co. girls, speed and quickness, they beat ranked towers high and have a few other big wins under their belt, Tessah Holt and Kristene Walker are the best guard combo in the state.

I can’t wait for the games this evening! I’ll be at the SWD vs. #1 St. Pius game. I’m just as interested in the Avondale at GAC game.

I guess I have ‘evolved’ where I’m as excited about the girls games as the boys! Go SWD Lady Panthers!

Congratulations to the Lady Golden Lions of St. Pius. It was easy to see why they are the defending state champions. Our SWD Lady Panthers hung with them for the first 20 minutes of the game, then Kelly Cain and her teammates began pulling away.

I’m sure we will meet again in the regional finals. Who knows, maybe we will meet in the state finals.
