GSWA Basketball Poll: Jan. 30
The Atlanta Journal-Constitution
Only 13 more days left until the region tournaments begin and several teams are beginning to make their presence known. Marietta is no longer flying under the radar. A 17-point win over Wheeler was what the Blue Devils needed to bolt to No. 8 in this week’s Class AAAAA poll. The Blue Devils will get a big test tonight (Tuesday) when they take on a surging Harrison squad that has already beaten Marietta once this season. Another hot team is Centennial, which enters the rankings at No. 9 after wins over ranked teams Milton and Chattahoochee. On the girls’ side, Westlake rides an eight-game winning streak to the No. 8 ranking in AAAA. North Cobb’s girls are also on a hot streak with wins over ranked McEachern and Marietta.
Who’s hot, who’s not - you tell us. Submit your comments below.

After watching Norcross demolish P Ridge, the best game in the entire state would be Norcross vs Wilkinson Co. There are probably 7 to 8 major D1 signees/prospects between both teams. Can the AJC arrange a matchup? Also, the East Hall girls are overrated. I have seen them play numerous times. They are lazy on defense and have no perimeter game. Buford boys are overrated as well. They got destroyed by a weak Gainesville team. No inside game. Look for Jefferson boys as a sleeper to make the final four (unless they play Wilkinson earlier).

I think Douglass girls should be in the mix somewhere their only lost have been to three teams that are rank Stephenson , Mays and Redan but came back this past week and beat Redan by 20

What about the 18-4 Newton Rams out of region 2-AAAAA. They won their first 11 straight including a Christmas tournament and have won 6 out of their past 7. They are ranked 10th in the GAsports.com coaches poll for the 2nd straight week. Why can’t the AJC give them any respect? They beat 17-5 Stephenson 74-50. What’s up?

I cannot believe that Camden went to number 10 while you rank Beach at number 3. Camden defeated Beach. Give me a break! Maybe it’s time that the AJC have someone do these polls that knows what they’re doing.

As stated Monday, this is not the AJC polls, but the Georgia Sportswriters Association poll. It consist of writers from throughout the state.
Eddie Hood: I am not sure if you saw my post on the previous rankings, but I will respond again. I had an eye on Newton at the begining of the season, but since we started back with the rankings, they have fallen off some. It would be hard to rank them when they are in fourth place in their region. Since the rankings picked back up in January, some other teams have started to catch fire.
Wildcat fan:
Beach over Camden, I think there is an argument for that. The score was real close (75-72) the first time they met. Camden’s losses have come against Bradwell and AA Tatnall Co. I saw Beach a few weeks ago, and they are my choice as a final four team. They have the same lineup from last season that reached the finals, and a proven winner as the coach. They have a chance to make a statement tonight with Beach in town.

What little love the SWD Lady Panthers had by recieving votes now seem to be lost in AAAA. Jeez, only having one loss to an out of region AAAA school along with their margin of victories doesn’t seem to impress the GA sportwriters. Hopefully after they defeat Mays and St. Pius over the next week, folks will see what I’ve been blogging about.

I THINK BEACH IS RIGHT WHERE THEY SHOULD BE IN THE POLLS. CAMDEN DID BEAT BEACH AT HOME THIS YEAR SO WHAT LOOK AT THE FLORIDA GATORS BASKETBALL TEAM. THEY LOST TO SOME TEAMS THAT NOBODY KNEW THEY WOULD AND THEY’RE STILL #1. WE WERE BOUND TO LOSE AT SOME POINT NO TEAM IS PERFECT IN THE AAAAA POLL THIS YEAR. WE HAVE THE SAME TEAM BACK AND IS GOING TO CAUSE SOME PROBLEMS IN THE PLAYOFFS. CAMDEN HAS THERE CHANCE TO PROVE WE SHOULDN’T BE #3 TONIGHT. I REALLY DONT THINK CAMDEN IS GOING TO HAVE A SEASON SWEEP OVER BEACH. LOOK OUT FOR JAMES FEILDS AKA BOOM 6’1 JUNIOR 2 GUARD 23.0 PPG 5 APG AND 5 RPG. THE BOY GOT GAME LIKE WADE WITH A GOOD SUPPORTING CAST LOOK OUT.

If the bulldogs win the next two, what can one say. They have the power to win or fight for the win. We may see the bulldogs again in the AA title game. Can the bulldogs hold off the known powers of AA basketball. The powers are in the same region as the bulldogs(east hall AAA).May be in Macon for the title(Thomasville bulldogs).

When is the last time that you saw Camden play? You obviously don’t know that their coach has won a state championship (in 2003). Get your facts and I can also assure you that Camden will make a statement tonight.

Unfortunately for SWD they are on the weaker girls side of the subregion. They scored a big win over Redan, but lately the Raiders have lost 6 of their last 10 games. SWD has a chance to earn a spot starting Saturday against Mays and next Friday against St. Pius. The region tournament is shaping up to be very exciting on both the boys and girls side. They have an earlier season win over Marist, which is now in third place in the other subregion, but did lose to a talented North Clayton squad. Like I said, the Panthers have a chance to impress in the next week.

Newton is still the most feared team in Region 2-AAAAA. Asked the coaches. That’s what the coaches poll does. Three teams are tied for first with only 1 more win than Newton in the region. 1 win separates the 4 teams and Newton beat one of the 1st place team, Stephenson by 24 the one time they played them. When Newton played Redan and Luella, they were without McDonald’s All-American Nominee Troy Jones who missed a game and a half of those 2 games. With him in the line up, Newton is 18-2. Newton can prove its might when they play the last three teams in front of them down the stretch. Bottom line, Newton has been the most consistent team overall in their region and has the best record overall at 18-4, and they are only 1 game out of first. No one else in region 2-AAAAA has won 11 straight and also 6 of 7 in two stretches this season. When Newton is at full strength, they are a ranked team like the coaches poll shows. How many teams in AAAAA have only 4 losses and have Newton’s resume, which includes a Christmas tournament championship win over Tift County in the Finals and a Final Four appearance as recently as 2005, when they lost to Wheeler. Newton has lost to the eventual state champs in the state playoffs 4 times in the past 8 seasons. That’s pretty good company.

In the girls AAAAA poll McEachern is ranked at 5 and 7 also Douglass girls should be ranked they are in a tough region and could be the sleeper on the girls side of the tournament. They are athletic, quick, have good size and will have a good spot in the tournament bracket which means they will cause a lot of problems for teams. Watch out for Douglass girls!!!

This might be the first year where each class(for boys)seems to have a clear-cut favorite to win it all. Not saying they will win it all(that’s why we play the game), but each team that is ranked #1 deserves that spot.
Top contenders for: AAAAA—not sure anyone can beat Norcross. Wheeler, Meadowcreek, and Peachtree Ridge if they are on and Norcross is off.
AAAA—Personally don’t think any team in AAAA will top Columbia.
AAA—East Hall has the best chance to dethrone Dunwoody of anyone. Dunwoody is very good though, can East Hall’s pressure get to the guards of Dunwoody?
AA—Don’t know if any AA teams can run with Thomasville, but if they slow them down…these teams have a chance-Decatur, Manchester, Buford, Darlington, Coosa, and Wesleyan.
A—Believe Wilco is far and above others in A. Whitefield has the best chance, but would have to play great.

Thanks. We will make the change. It should be Marietta No. 7 and McEachern No. 5.
Douglass has been a big surprise with Morgan Jennings and freshman Khaalidah MIller with the return of Tanesha Hudson. I’ve been trying to get out to see them.

Are u serious with putting westlake girls in the top 10! Lets look @ their schedule they haven’t played anybody near the top ten and when they did they got blown out by Mays. Their schedule is among the weakest of the top ten. I wouldn’t be suprised if they bounced out in the first round of the state playoffs! Their are many more teams in 4A that are worthy of the top ten poll and westlake is not one of them.

Who in the world votes so stupid on these polls….AA boys- Why is Randolph Clay still in the top five after losses to TWO unranked teams in there own region??? Why is Buford ranked the same after losing to a weak Gainesville?? Decatur losses to a ranked team, and drops totally out of the top 5, but Buford and Randolph Clay stay about the same after a much week for them!!!!!!!!!!! Union still isn’t ranked on your poll and they are 20-2, and moved upto #4 on the GHSA poll……your rankings suck and so does whoever votes on them….Biased I must say….

During the course of a 20+ game season, some of the better teams will not have a pretty record. Some of that is do to the fact that some regions are stronger than others and scheduling. When I place my vote, that is something I look at. A pretty record may grab my attention, but I look at the region teams are in and the non-region schedule. I have seen most of the teams in Region 6-AAAA, and feel that is the strongest AAAA in the state. Talk to any coach and they will say the same thing. Fact, the state champion has come from that region the last three years and in 2003 South Atlanta (which is a produce of that region) played for the state title. If you look at both polls, they are almost similar with teams flip-flop in some order or the team you are rooting for is in the other poll, but only receiving minimum votes in the GSWA poll. I still think Cherokee is a solid team with potential to go far. I saw Lithia Springs Saturday and thought they were good, but I don’t think they are 20-2 playing in Region 6-AAAA. I remember three seasons ago Woodland was 27-2 and their fans were all upset because they weren’t ranked. They played Mays in the second round of the playoffs. The Raiders played their worst game of the season and won 64-39. I can’t speak for the other nine voters, but I also look at other factors beside record. I still think that some of the teams like -Randolph-Clay - will be around the playoffs for a few rounds. Wheeler is still a top 10 team, and has earned the respect. Marietta was one of those team that our Cobb writer Todd Holcomb has been telling me about all season. I was waiting on a quality win to vote for them. Hey, you only get ten (10) slots on your ballot. You just have to make a decision on which ten you feel are the best in each class. I’ve talked coaches over the course of the season who said they agree with the GSWA poll and the process in which we exchange information to inform each other of the teams in their area. If fact, several coaches said they don’t vote in the coaches poll because they don’t know about the other teams in the state. They say their focus right now is own their team and they will worry about the rest when, and if, the time comes. Again, thanks for your comments and suggestions.

Thomas ville,
You have to look at some of the ususal suspects in Randolph-Clay. I really like that Thomasville team when I saw them in the final four last season in Macon. In my opinion, Jamarr Moore might be the most underrated player in the state. I like his game - very unselfish. I think Decatur will make some noise. East Hall looks like they are ready for another run. I passed on an opportunity to see them a few weeks ago when they played Southwest Atlanta Christian.

Gilligan, 20-2 is a fine record…no doubt about it. BUT WHO HAS UNION PLAYED? Played White County 4 times. Lost to Dawson County. Union might be a fine team, but they will have to show it during the playoffs…because they play nobody during the regular season. I will agree with you that after a team(R-Clay) loses twice in a week to unranked teams, they should definitely drop some, if not out.

Single A girls should have ranked St. Francis Lady Knights this week. They have not lost a game since the Westminister Christmas tournament making them undefeated in 2007.
If there is going to be an All Frosh Team for girls in North Fulton County there is no doubt in my mind Judean Hanks from St. Francis should be on it.

Well, it is the day after and I have had a chance to think out what happened and what I saw at the Camden ,Beach game. I do believe that Beach has a good team( great no), they have to good players and one really good player. #41 is one of the best players I have seen in the state but he has such a bad additude. If Some one could change that for him then he would go far. Now for Camden had a good game. The game was coached very well but not exucuted. they also have 4 good player one being #4o,#12,#5 and #20. Two of them are Juniors and two are senior . They are great individuals but they still have not played a game as a team through the whole game but just for three quaters. Sorry for rambling, but for the game it self! Beach won the game and the score says by 12 I was there and it was alot closer than that. Beach excuted the game plan better and put Camden On there heels from the #3rd quarter on. Camden seemed to fall apart with 5 mins to go in the game . I believe that camden will go deeper in the playoffs than they have gone. I do believe that they will beat Beach if they cross them again. Till later Roger Phat Daddy Whitehouse

Bulldogs breeze past Camden County BEACH 64, CAMDEN CO. 52 The Bulldogs (19-2, 9-1)
Ellington’s Bulldogs got the double-digit lead during the first half and Camden County put up little challenge during a 64-52 victory that solidifies Beach’s first-place lead in Region 3-AAAAA.The win avenged a Beach 75-72 loss to the Wildcats in their first meeting Jan. 9.The Wildcats didn’t have much success shooting over 6-foot-10 LaDaris Green, who controlled the paint.Fouling seemed to help the Wildcats. Beach went only 13-for-26 from the foul line in the final period and a 20-point lead slowly whittled to a dozen at the buzzer. That’s when the top ‘Dogs of Region 3-AAAAA afforded themselves a chance to glance ahead at the weekend and games with Johnson- Savannah and Savannah High.
Records-Beach 19-2, 9-1 Region 3-AAAAA; CC 17-4, 8-3.

Mr. Beach High:
Is that Ellington, Sr. coaching the team again? I may have missed that if it is. Historians like me remember he won the first BBall championship after integration in ‘67. I think ‘Gator’ Rivers was one of the stars on that team. Wouldn’t it be ironic if he won again 40 years later.
Hey Derrick, if this is Ellington, Sr. at Beach, this could be a great story for you.

Yes, I had a story planned on Russell and that team back in Oct. when he got the job. We have spoken on a couple times this year. The story is planned to run the first week of the playoffs. We did a story on integration back in November for the football. That story was fun to do in talking with players from that era. We had guys from Carver and Brown come into the office for a photo and it was great hearing talk about the first time that all-black schools and the all-white schools played for the first time. Ernest if you remember that Carver of Atlanta won the AA title the following week. THe interesting thing about Carver was that they had no home gym during that time. On a blog on this page, I list who I feel are the top 10 coaches in the state and Russell is definitely on there. He is one reason I feel that Beach has a good shot at state.
Mr. Beach High:
I saw the Bulldogs when they played Meadowcreek. Although they lost, I think they are definitely one of the top 5A teams. I would like to see Johnson-Sav. If fact, that should be an interesting Region 3 tournament down there. Who is hosting the tournament. Also, who is #23on the girls team. She has is a player.

Derrick:
We are digressing (and I’m enjoying it) but I would definitely enjoy seeing a piece on Coach Ellington. He’s got an ATL connection to Morris Brown, so there would be local interest. I REALLY enjoyed the story the AJC did in Nov. for football. I heard Stan Prichett (former Associate Superintendent with DeKalb) scored the first touchdown after the ATL schools were integrated.
Back to Coach Ellington, I got to know him because his son was my best friend in HS (the mighty Johnson Atomsmashers, gotta love that mascot of Atom Ant). What was expecially interesting is that Savannah probably had the top BBall teams in the state at that time, with Beach, Johnson (who won in 68 with Joby Wright), and St. Pius (since closed). If your story was on how all black BBall teams were received in the statewide tournament along with the stories written about them, it would be a GREAT human interest story. What impact did sports have on bridging the racial gap?

I met Ellington when coached at MBC. I have studied the history of bball in the state since I have been around here my entire life (minus a few years in Alabama, Tenn. and Miss.). I have old clipping from 1947 (about five years ago I did a big piece on the GIA). If you remember, MBC just jumped to Div. I and was playing all those money games. The most surprising thing is that they rarely got blown out, much to the credit of Russell. It should be fun talking to those guys about the ‘67 season. Unfortunately, I think a couple of the players are deased from that Beach team. Great trip down memory lane. I am looking forward to the rest of this season. Just another week to go and the tournaments begin. I’ll be putting a lot of miles on the car bouncing around to the different tournaments. Where do you all think the best action will be?

If you do the story on Coach Ellington, save a paragraph for Johnson and Joby Wright. I spoke to a gentleman last week who graduated from Tucker in 66. He felt Tucker had a great team that year until they played Johnson.
I lived in DeKalb now and truly believe some of the best basketball, boys and girls, is in our county. Of the 10 potential state winners, I belive we’ve got a great shot to win 4 (boys from Columbia and Dunwoody, girls from St.Pius and Avondale). If the girls from Stephenson catch a break, they could surprise folks in 5A.
I’m biased but I believe the 6 AAAA region tournament could be the best in the state. I predict the boys will send Columbia, Tucker, Stone Mountain, and Miller Grove to the big dance. The girls should send St.Pius, Marist, Mays, and SWD. Heck, there is a potential for a DeKalb final for both sides of the AAAA tournament.
Have fun while you are in Macon and Albany. Contrary to belief, they take their bball serious in south GA.
BTW,I agree with your earlier story. The 79 SW Macon team should go down in history as the best ever in GA. I thought the Marietta team a few years ago had a chance however they didn’t win the state that year.

I agree with you on the Region 6-AAAA being strong. In last week’s blog I did a post of the league. The four years and the last five of six years a team that has composed that region has played for a boys state title. I will definitely be over at Miller Grove for a couple nights. Saw the St. Pius-Mays girls game last night. Man, it was a treat. Mays had there chance to win in regulation and overtime. Mays led 27-14 at halftime with Kelley Cain in foul trouble. Going to see Griffin on Saturday. They seem to have all their issues resolved and look to be peaking at the right time. They could be my darkhorse to come out of the South bracket. Keep an eye on Fayette Co. Westlake will miss Cameron Newton’s inside presence and their is a drop-off when they go to the bench with their guards. Hearing good things about East Hall, so Dunwoody could find a challenger for its attempt for a third straight crown. I think the Columbus schools (Carver and Northside) definitely have a shot at coming from the south bracket. I’m also hearing good things about that Glenn Hills squad. If not this year, if they stay together, it could in their future next season. I don’t know if South Atlanta will have enough to make a run. However, Derrick Favors is special. The Hornets rarely lose with him in the lineup.

The focus is on Mr.Russel Ellington but most great coaches have a good coaching staff that surrounds them. I heard that he has great assistants that know his system and they can relate to the player. The likes of cyrus hunter who was big time scorer, Todd Ellis who was good defender so he has something to do with those boys playing that aggressive defense, todd played on that 1996 championship team at savannah tech with russell ellington. Kevin smith who is a good defensive coach, he was one of the johnson high staff in 1992 when they one state title. The likes of Dobson washington one of his assistant’s when he was a savannah technical college in 96 when they one there first junior college championship. There a new kid on the block with him also that bring a lot of energy and a lot of knowledge of the game kenneth simmons. Mark my words the bulldogs should be playing in the title game in march madness.

Fanman…Union has beat its share of teams currently ranked in the top ten over the summer at camp…..Tattnal fell to Union, and I do believe Dodge and one other fell. They also defeated last years champs handily. They played Newton (AAAAA #10) over summer camp, and only lost by 8…after Newton beat everyone else by 30+….They have played ranked out of state teams in a Christmas tournament, and won it. Union has played its share of good teams, and has done well. Union has two of its players on the YBOA final four team over the summer as well….Michael Ross and Austin Collins, both Union starters…Juniors, play as starters on North Georgia Heat along side josh Chapman and Trevor Bishop….two top East Hall stars….I think if they are good enough to start there, then they are good enough to play competition in the playoffs.

Where’s GACS, Do they get any credit they’re 13-0 in the Region and the’re 21-1 overall. The only lost was to 5-AAAAAA South Gwinnett by 6pts, They Beat Redondo Beach which is ranked in the top 10 in the Nation. They have the deepest bench in the County. What do they have to do to even be considered. They can run with anyone

Norcross all the way. I wouldn’t count out the Wesleyan Lady Wolves. Coach Azar will have them firing on all cylinders for the state playoffs. GAC and Avondale better be ready.

Single A Girls belongs to Landmark. Not sure SACA can take them out, but both should play one another for the state finals. St. Francis may be undefeated in 2007 but they haven’t beaten a quality team yet. There freshman can’t handle pressure. I’ve heard the Lady Knights lost their best player to Milton. Another Eagles team (namely Landmark) will crush them in the region tournament.

Dunwoody should be ranked higher we beat number one Norcross in a preseason game. We led them almost by twenty in the secound half does that not mean anything. We beat Pinecrest by 20 and they were one of the best teams in the nation

Derrick:
Frist off, thanks for giving props to 6 AAAA in your piece in Friday’s AJC. You may catch some grief from other regions in the state for it but I believe your prognostication will prove true.
My chest is out with pride because the SWD Lady Panthers defeated the #3 or 4 (based on the poll) team at Mays by 18 points on Saturday. Let’s see, they defeated the team that beat Marist (#4 or 5) twice and we also beat that team. We have ONE loss to a AAAA team, North Clayton, in a Holiday tournament. We are scheduled to play the #1 team, St. Pius on Friday, 2/9. Are the sportwriters noticing this? Like I said, 6 AAAA could also be the home of state champs for both the boys and girls brackets. Tell your fellow sportswriters to “Show us some love” in the next poll.

I wish all the teams would have a final play-off between the school…5A should get a bye in the 1st play-off and 4A should play 1A and 3A should play 2A and the winner of that match should play 5A in the second round…because I think there are some schools that are in 3A and 2A that can beat 4A and 5A schools!

Newton boys, #10 in AAAAA coaches poll for the 3rd week straight week, moved to 19-5 with big win over region foe Redan Tuesday night. Newton plays Friday at 2-AAAAA leader Stephenson. Newton beat them 74-50 the last time. This will decide the seeding for the tournament next week. This region is overlooked by Gwinnett schools, but has a lot of talent and parody in it. Both Stephenson and Newton at 19-5 are solid teams, as is ML King. Friday night will be big.

Franklin County beat Hart twice this year. Their last meeting was a Franklin County victory by appx. 19 points. How can you rank Hart 5th and Franklin County in the “others receiving votes?” I saw the game. Hart did not belong on the same floor with Franklin County. Stan Oliver Orlando, Florida

Armuchee just struggled and was behind late in the 3rd quarter to a struggling Pepperell girls team. Also, you don’t even list Model in the top 10, but let’s not forget that Armuchee’s just 1 out of 4 against tough teams, with 2 of their 3 defeats coming from Model girls.
