Girls — Best of Gwinnett

As of today, here are my top 5 Gwinnett girls basketball teams. Agree or disagree?

  1. Collins Hill (19-0), Class AAAAA: Tops in the nation, Eagles must be No. 1 in Gwinnett.

  2. South Gwinnett (16-2), AAAAA: Comets have won 16 straight, including victories over Mill Creek, GAC and Berkmar.

  3. Mill Creek (17-3), AAAAA: Hawks could have, probably should have, beaten Collins Hill 2 1/2 weeks ago.

  4. Greater Atlanta Christian (17-1), Class AA: Spartans’ only blemish is a tight loss to South Gwinnett.

  5. Wesleyan (15-4), AA: Wolves get nod over Berkmar (16-2) because of championship pedigree. Also, Berkmar got blown out by South Gwinnett on Saturday.

You’re telling me Berkmar, with a Louisville-bound point guard, can’t beat AA Wesleyan? C’mon …

Watch out for Dacula girls player Abbie Daniel class of 08. Great ball handling skills as well as a pure shooter. Already 1000 points in career early as a junior. Look for her to recieve many D-I offers soon.

I can’t wait to see Collins Hill and South go at it again. I would have love to seen South in the same tournaments as Collins Hill with the national talent they played in that stretch in December to get a true gauge of how good South truly is. On any given night anyone can be beat, take a look at what Mill Creek did against a tired and uninterested Collins Hill team(almost knocked them off).Collins and South from what I’ve seen are by far the top two teams but the jury is still out on South because their 2 loses where to national competition.

Jim, you’re right about Abbie, terrific player. Keep me posted on her offers…

Proud Pop, I would have loved to see Collins Hill play South in the regular season. It’s a shame we have to wait until March 9, if the rematch happens at all. Have you seen Stephenson this year?

Proud Pop - The 2 losses by South to Winter Haven (by 6 pts) and Bishop Moore (in OT) were the first 2 games of the season for South. Both of those teams had already played 3 or 4 games. I was in Orlando for the games and I can tell you that if the games were played today, you would see a different outcome. The Lady Comets had “opening day jitters” and did not play up to par. No excuses, but they are a different team today. While South beat Berkmar by 39 pts, they also beat Mill Creek by 16 pts. It would be great to see a rematch with Collins Hill for the AAAAA championship, but it will not be easy for South or Collins Hill - they will have to get by Stephenson who is “on fire” right now also. By the way, Winter Have only lost to CH by 2 pts.

Not to go back and forth on Winter Haven but they meant up with a tired Collins Hill team when they played that game. The schedule Collins Hill played before that game was borderline NBA-ish. 7 games in 9 days and to play that level of competition and travel across county twice to do it. I would love to see any high school team boys or girls duplicate that feat and go undefeated in the process. Not being bias but being a person who has played on a higher level then just high school, to do what they did is very impressive. And I won’t even get into the traveling nightmare they experienced before that Winter Haven game or the 5 am wake up call to do a taping of Cold Pizza for ESPN, BORDERLINE INCREDIBLE…..to come out of that undefeated.

C’mon on Harstein - stop propping up the Wolves. This year’s Wesleyan team is still good, but CERTAINLY a couple of notches below where they have done. And kudos to GAC for cracking Avondale and making a run for the AA title. Collins Hill of course, but I think they were better last year. PG being the difference.

Wesleyan is not the same this year as in years past, and their championship past should not get them a pass this year, Larry. GAC should be 3, Mill Creek 4, and Berkmar 5.

Good points, though what does a New Yorker know about Gwinnett hoops? Berkmar almost lost to Shiloh last night and they’re not playing like they were earlier…. And as well as GAC is going right now, I’d still give a slight edge to Mill Creek because of Pool, Porter, Towers-Solis, Williams, Watson, etc…. Let’s see how Wesleyan does this Friday vs. Avondale.

If everything goes as it should we will see Collins Hill - Stephenson at the Gwinnett Arena on March 8 and the winner of that game [CHHS] against South on March 9 for the Championship. But if it is like the football playoffs who knows?

I agree with your top 5. I would love to see Mill Creek play GAC. Berkmar also lost to Central. Can’t wait for the MC/CH game tonite. It is going to be awesome! Don’t underestimate Porter!
