GSWA Basketball Poll: Jan. 15

Monday night Wilkinson County gave a glance of why it was voted the top team in Class A with a dominating, payback performance against No. 4 Whitefield Academy. The Warriors, with three Div. I signees, looked as if they were ready to take on any team in any class. Speaking of payback, Meadowcreek got some against Beach Saturday in another thriller. Beach thrashed the Mustangs 72-46 last month, but lost 61-58 on its trip to Norcross. Wesleyan was expected to struggle, but new coach Skip Matherly has the Wolves in contention for the Region 6-AA title.

Redan girls are in the top 10???? SW DeKalb girls put a ‘whupping’ on them this past Saturday (1/13). They are a nice team but surely not a top 10 team in the highest classsification.

Another thing, why is Marist girls still ranked so high and recieving a first place vote? Again, SW DeKalb girls defeated them earlier in the season. SW DeKalb girls only losses occured to Stephenson (#2 in 5A) and to two schools during a Christmas tournament. Where is the love?

I smell ‘home cooking’ for some of these rankings. Someone must really want Marist to have a ‘lofty’ ranking.

Are you serious?? dunwoody girls #1…i must be seeing things and Southside #9….

WHEN WILL TOWERS HIGH SCHOOL GET SOME RESPECT? Last year the girls beat previously AAA number one champs- Avondale but still no one said anything. We beat Dunwoody and still no word. This year we beat “#9 Southside” and previously ranked #9 Westminster and i can probably bet we still won’t get any credit…

Regardless of what other people may and think I am REALLY proud of our lady titans….ya’ll don’t need to prove yourselves to any one.

Norcross’s boys looked unbeatable against North the other night. They led 27-1 and it just seemed like North couldn’t breathe at times. Peachtree Ridge is talented but has a long way to go. The state championship game preview is Jan. 23 at Norcross. We should all be there…

The truth is Towers lady titans has not got their just due over the years. The lady titans have been to the state now four years in a row, and went to the sweetsixteen the past two. They return all five starters from a 22-8 team that beat Avondale, Dunwoody, Westminster (all were ranked at the time) only to lose a heartbreaker on a buzzer beater to North Hall in the sweetsixteen. This year the lady titans are 13-4 and 8-0 in the region. After beating a tough Southside team tonight and beating #10 Westminster by 20 at Westminster, when will the just due be given? The 4 losses have all come from 5A schools including one in overtime in the xmas tournament. The coach does well with the players he gets from his own feeder school. Towers Q.Perry has been nominated for the Mcdonald All American Award as well All State scoring over 1200 points in her career- still no love. WHEN WILL THE RIGHT THING BE DONE AND GIVE CREDIT WERE CREDIT IS DUE?!

WOW!!! How exciting to see two of the mountain county’s schools getting some notice in the latest hoops rankings! The boys team from Union County received some votes - and deservedly so! I’ve seen those guys play, and they are amazing! And the girls team from MY home county, Towns County, is ranked #10!! Way to go, girls! And also kudos go out to head coach Jim Melton…who by the way is the happiest man in the county as he’s been a frequent spectator at the county park and recreation 12-under girls games, scouting future talent (and there is PLENTY OF IT! coming his way in a few years). And before those girls make their way to high school, he’ll soon be inheriting players who are currently playing for Towns County Middle Schools UNDEFEATED girls team! (Way to go Coach Jamesa Nelson!) Basketball is alive and THRIVING in the mountains!!!!

Well, looks like someone did as I asked and now they know that Camden and coach Paul Williams are a team to watched. I am telling you when camden beats Johnson this Friday then you will see more heads spin and that it was not just a flook betting the # two ranked team. Camden is good and they are coached by a coach that is going to be one of the best inb the state. One other thing that is puzzleing to me why is it that coaches poll has Camden at #8 and we are not ranked in this pool. Stop and take a deep breath and remember you are voting for all the school in Ga not metro. Roger

The Beach high bulldogs is one those teams to watch, they have been in the top ten over the last 5 years. They have a lot of experieced players and the are coached by the legend Russell Ellington. In coaches opinion, they talked about the kid chris allen, however, the beach high school bulldogs are lead by that fab five with james fields, ladarius Green, Musa Abdullah, marque williams and markeith cummings. This is the bulldogs year to bring it back to savannah.

The turner county rebels r being overlooked tremendously with only one lost coming from 1-AAAAA Tift county blue devils which is always a split season rival with turner winning the first game and tift winning the second. Hosting the playing wilcox county Jan 20, 2007 turner we be ranked with a win!!!!

Seems like the 5A rankings all seem to revolve around Gwinnett county?? wonder why that is? there are other counties and other teams. Like how about the Newton boys 14-3 (5-3) in region 2-AAAAA. why aren’t they getting any love?

I keep seeing these comments about Atlanta schools, but what about schools from Columbus. They have three boys teams in the top ten: Northside- Columbus, Carver-Columbus and Jordan. Shaw High also recieved votes. On the girls side there’s the #1 lady Cherokees from Kendrick who has done everything but lose and the Lady Hawks from Hardaway are #7. What else does the city have to do to get respect

Well, the Marist girls have lost again to another team in their region. This time it was to Mays, which is ranked 7th by this poll. SWD girls had a CONVINCING win against Columbia girls, 68-15 and will play the #2 Stephenson girls today (1/20).

Will the AJC keep showing love to Marist, despite the fact they’ve lost 4 games to teams in their region?

2 Much:

SWD and Stephenson has been and will always be a GREAT rivalry. Too bad we are in different classifications now which prevent the football team (and tremendous bands) from competing. We’ll be rooting for you when the playoffs begin, showing the state that SERIOUS basketball, both boys and girls, is played in DeKalb County.

With the boys teams at Columbia, Tucker, Stone Mountain, and Dunwoody along with the girls teams at SWD, Stephenson, and Avondale, we should see at least two state championships again this year. We should also show some love to the girls at Marist and St. Pius, DeKalb County private schools. They are quite capable also.

Does one victory vs Avondale last year mean you should get props this year? What happened the other 2 times Towers played Avondale last year? Both games were 30 point blowouts, including a reginal playoff game. You should get your props because you are playing well, but it should be based on what you are doing now. Your time will come to show everyone what type of team you have now. Never live off past success..only what you are doing now matters!

Lithia already beat Pebblebrook once this year but that was at home so it will be interesting to see how they do away. Playing Cherokee on their home court, that should be a good one.

Victoria

You are so right Towers should be recognized not for the past but for now and they are doing a great job, I know you would agree. The only reason the Avondale win was brought up was to show a pattern of not receiving just due. Avondale was not the only ranked team that the Towers lady titans beat last year and all were stated in the above post. Yes Towers did lose in the region championship game by 20, but this was also one day after the Towers Family lose their beloved Head Football JONATHAN MCKEE in a car accicdent.May he rest in peace.I know DeKalb will be cheering for all of its teams come State.

I agree as well, Towers may not get the credit they deserve for being a good team. They played good basketball last year, and are playing well this year..It happens, Avondale was in the same boat last year until they won it all. And still this year, they are being predicted to lose to teams like GAC and Wesylean. It’s sad but all the Dekalb county teams have to WIN Big to get props and even then it’s not that big of a deal. Imagine if Towers was in Gwinett Co,there would be tons of articles in the paper every week. But its not. In order for any of our Dekalb County teams to get there props, we have to not just win, but win BIG! Leave no doubt..Avondale plays GAC today. If Avondale wins, you would have to be there to hear about it. But if GAC wins, it will be front news!!! Believe that..
