Don’t crown AAAAA champs yet

To borrow from ESPN football analyst Lee Corso: “Not so fast, my friend.” Many are ready to anoint the Collins Hill girls and Norcross boys Class AAAAA champions.

I must admit they both have been impressive and have handled the preseason hype quite well.

Much of that has to do with a group of determined and experienced players; and a lot of credit must go to coaches Tracey Tipton (Collins Hill) and Eddie Martin (Norcross).

While most fans already have Collins Hill’s and Norcross’ names engraved on the championship trophies, there is still a lot of basketball to be played between now and March 9.

Remember, the Wheeler boys were an overwhelming favorite last season, but Beach emerged.

Speaking of both those teams, they also should be considered serious contenders along with Peachtree Ridge and Meadowcreek.

On the girls’ side, Collins Hill has showed a never-say-die attitude, especially during its trip to Washington over the holidays.

Contenders to throw into the mix include a talented Stephenson team and South Gwinnett, which is also a capable opponent. Mill Creek played the Eagles tough last week.

For sure, the AAAAA tournament will be another good one.

Hey- I know its AJC for ATLANTA Journal Constitution, but can we look at teams that aren’t so close to Atlanta. Like some Region 3 teams besides beach. I’m thinking about the ones down in the very bottom corner of GA- the Southeast corner that is. Well down there is this little place, much closer to Jacksonville, Fla than Atlanta. But any way, this place… They don’t seem to get any recognition for any sport. It’s CAMDEN COUNTY!!! They just upset beach, they’ve lost two games and they have busted the clock in one game already. Hello folks, Camden County is for real in more than just football. The basketball team is making a name for itself right now, and look at our wrestling team. NO one will be able to compete with us at state duals. Oh yeah, this year we are fielding perhaps the best baseball team to come through our small town ever, Featuring Georgia Southern Signee Vince Smith who is ranked in the top 25 baseball players in the nation. 2007 is Camden County’s break out year, ya’ll wont have a choice but to talk about us.

DSGB, you might as well give it up. Its hard enough getting them to write about the other teams here in the city and metro area. They mostly write about Gwinnett teams. Gwinnett Co has its own section online for sports. I have given up on them and I don’t buy the paper anymore. I wish we had another option here as I would surely buy that paper.

Guys … Since the AJC doesn’t have a bureau down there, don’t you feel that these type of blogs/forums are South Georgia’s opportunity to get the information out there. Instead of wasting the space by complaining about the lack of coverage, why don’t you provide everyone with info about the teams you’d like to see covered. For instance, I had no idea Camden beat Beach. Stuff like that may peak the interest of the paper to follow up. Clearly, it’s not your job, but it just seems like wasted time to whine about things that likely can’t logistically change.

Another option for Big Man’s and DSGB comments, Buy the Wall Street Journal, if you can read it. Otherwise put up with the coverage or shut up.

Commenting is open from 8 a.m. to 5 p.m. M-F
