Don’t let final loss spoil tremendous seasons

Gwinnett high school football fans are more passionate than some college fans (especially if you root for Georgia Tech). And with Greater Atlanta Christian, Buford, North Gwinnett and Norcross all seeing their seasons end on Friday, there are a lot of fans, parents, players and coaches hurting this weekend.

Losing is painful and depressing. Don’t let it be. Fight it. Every time a bad memory from Friday night’s game creeps into you head, do some thing positive; do something that benefits your program, your family, your friends and the world. Moping, feeling sorry for yourself and dwelling on the loss doesn’t make anything better.

Easier said than done for sure. If my Sooners lose in Saturday night’s Big 12 Championship, it will hurt, and inside I’ll be depressed. (Don’t even mention Oregon to me). But I’ll put on a happy face and pretend to deal with the loss, even though it will be killing me on the inside. I’ll call my best friend, a lifelong Nebraska fan, and congratulate him. I’ll try to lose with class. Emphasis on try. I’m sure that’s what all Spartans, Wolves, Bulldogs and Blue Devils have been doing since their season came to an end.

With all that said, it’s often beneficial to vent your frustrations about a big loss. Here’s your chance. I was at the Peachtree Ridge-Stephenson game. The Ridge is the only Gwinnett team still alive in the playoffs. But why? I want to know why your team lost. Maybe it was a bad call? Maybe it was a flaw in the game plan or lack of adjustments? Maybe the other team was simply better?

Tell me what you think was the reason your team lost.

— Why can’t Buford slow down Charlton County’s spread offense?

— What happened to North Gwinnett’s spread offense that had been so explosive all season but was kept without a first down in the second half in a 13-0 loss Tift County? Eight sacks couldn’t have helped.

— It sounded like sacks also doomed Norcross in the Blue Devils’ 14-3 loss to Warner Robins. What else stymied Norcross’ potent offense? Why couldn’t the Devils’ defense get Warner Robins’ offense off the field?

— If GAC quarterback Lee Chapple was healthy—not to mention star running back Caleb King—would the Spartans be headed for the Dome?

Let me know what happened.

Congratulations to every team on what was another thrilling season of Gwinnett County football, and good luck to Peachtree Ridge the rest of the way.

Like I said earlier: the only way a Gwinnett County team is ever going to win state again is if all their daddies get their money together and pay off the GHSA to make a Division 6A(AAAAAA), so all the big Gwinnett County teams only play themselves. GC teams are never going to win an AAAAA state championship now that so many south GA teams are now AAAAA.

Me … I definitely appears that way, and I think that’s a good thing. South Georgia hasn’t exactly struggled against Gwinnett, at least recently. So I’m not sure there’s this big shift in power. I’m leaning toward Tift vs. Warner Robins right now, but don’t count out the Ridge. You’re not going to simply line up and run it down their throat. Not with Cameron Heyward in the middle, anyway.

Ye, he was O.K. Sometimes I think some of these kids are over rated, because of who they know or related to. Where was Heyward when #3 ran two of there player in the end zone. The jags have a good team and did good this year, although people was thinking they wasn’t going to make it this far with most of the star player being jrs. If we were going to lose a game it should have been the one in the DOME.

Stephenson needs an Offensive Coordinate so Coach Gartell can be a Head Coach. Over six years, Stephenson has had the most talented teams in the State. Stephenson should have won at least two State Championship in this period.

Peachtree Ridge is a good team but Stephenson is better team. Gartell and “Buck” at SWD have a common problem, EGO. Every Coach in the State of Georgia knows, when they play Stephenson just stop the run. Stephenson has not passed the ball since Reggie Ball and T. J. Gartell graduate. In other words, I know exactly what three plays Gartell will be calling tonight. Gartell is a good Head Coach, however, he is not a very good Offensive mind coach. Coach Seller do a good job of breaking down the opposing team offensive, but we don’t do a very good job of break down opposing team defensive team. This is true of how we attack each team Stephenson play. Gartell attack each team the same way. This is the reason SWD only have one championship and Stephenson cannot get over the hill.

Last year, Stephenson did make the dome because Gartell coached a great game against Parkview. Stephenson made the Dome because Marcus Ball refused to lose. If you do not believe me, just look at the tape and watch Mr. Ball take over the game with his determination to win. His determination to win made the other players want it too.

In conclusion, Coach Gartell must make some changes in his coaching and staff. Gartell needs to find trust in his staff with the people in the booth to make changes. He needs to give up the job of Offensive Coordinator and just be a head coach. Finally, he need to coach with more emotion and passion and maybe his team will play with more.

Great job Stephenson can’t wait til next year!!!

I attended the North Gwinett-Tift County game Friday night and saw two excellent teams play. I know that the Blue Devils came out on top but in my mind I still do not know which was the better team. The officials at this game were the worst I have EVER seen in over 50 years of watching HS football. These guys should retire and enter the football hall of shame. They were terrible.

Ya, the Ref. was give the game to Peachtee also, but it back fired until our coach gave them the game. (football) I agree with you Coach Gartell need to get a new Offensive coach, they have talent all over that team, I think that’s what #3 was trying to do friday night “TAKE THE GAME BACK” but it takes a team to do the job and good coaching. I didn’t want to wait until next year, they could have went all the way this year.

Toby-I was at the game as well and I do agree with your comment about the refs, however, the majority of BAD calls went against Tift. With all due respect, I don’t know what game you were watching to say “I know that the Blue Devils came out on top but in my mind I still do not know which was the better team.” The Tift D totally dominated NG, especially in the second half, while the Tift offense began to overcome the stifling calls by the refs (botched fumble recovery, too many men on the field, etc.) and crank it up. The Tift backs we’re getting 15-20 yds a carry!! Minus a few bad calls and Tift has another 10-14 points and NG never got close to red zone.

Toby, I am a Tift fan, but I don’t know whether or not you were actually at the game. Anyone that was actually at the game could tell that Tift’s defense dominated that game after the 1st quarter. I will admit that the calls went against both teams, but I believe Tift got the worst of them.

By Toby Cash

December 3, 2006 10:27 AM | Link to this

Oh yes, I agree. Tift was on the receiving end of many bad calls. I think they were penalized close to 100 yards. My point is…If the refs would have let the kids play instead of calling for a consensus(which lasted forever) on every penalty, the flow of the game would have been different. I am surprised that some of the kids were not injured after starting play once the long referee opinions were voted on. Now that the game is over, we will never know how otherwise the game would have ended.

Doesn’t seem we’ve answered David Purdum’s questions on how these explosive and potent offenses were held in check ?

Of course my 2 cents will be biased as I’m a Lowndes Viking fan.

Ultimately, I believe the reason Tift and WR held Norcross/NG’s “explosive and potent” offenses… Guess that’s the first thing that is suspect ? Who and how were these stats compiled… in other words, who’d they play ? How can teams that sport these blown up stats get for the most part totally shut down ? Most likely, across the board they just don’t play the same type competition that the teams from mid and south ga play week in and week out.

During the Vikes 2 year run, they played a number of running backs that had gained 1800-2000 yards by the time they got to the playoffs… but against Lowndes they were lucky to get 25-40 yards on 20+ carries. One year a RB played at Meadowbrook (lots of yards), got about 25-30 against the Vikes, following year he was at Brookwood (i think), same deal against the Vikes…

I know the Metro ATL folks get tired of hearing it, but our little community based 1AAAAA,AAAA,AAA,AA,A play where if the high school games were played on Sunday…well, we’d probably have to move Sunday school to Friday nights ! lol…

Crazy year this year in 1AAAAA, really was a little SEC, every team (except Tift) had multiple losses against each other and most games were decided by a TD or less (for the most part).

Is this to say that it’s hands down Tift or WR wins the title - NO WAY - gotta play.

Go Vikings ! Go Cats ! Go 1AAAAA !

Someone said that the refs gave the game to peachtree ridge. I was at the game and actually they tried to give it to Stephenson. With 3:42 left in the game, the only thing that malfunctions on the scoreboard is the time. Come on, lets be real. That was the longest 4 mins I’ve ever witnessed.

Good Luck to all the teams left.

Nice story about how the 1aaaaa teams are the only teams in Ga. to play stiff competition week in and week out.Houston County lost to WR 10-9, lost to Tift 20-17,manhandle Lowndes 31-14 and were not even in the game this past week against a north team (Roswell) 42-21. You continue to make like 1aaaaa football is the only region that plays tough football and I believe that statement just isn’t true!!!

Anyone that was at the Tift - NG game saw the stupid calls that the referee’s called, like throwing a flag on a field goal and after throwing the flag start counting the guys on the field. When they counted the players 5 times, they waived the flag off. Number 1 they count before the snap, Number 2 it took a conference EVERY time they threw a flag for at least 10 minutes. The referee’s were doing their best to give the game to NG.

David P. I’m glad to see there’s another Oregon Fan on the East Coast (but your right, lets not discuss how there season went). Aside from that, I’ll tell you what happened to Norcross- The same thing that happended to us down here in camden. The Warner Robins we watched on tape was not the same Warner Robins that stepped out on the field. The reason that Warner Robins is doing so well is the fact that they have played near perfect football, and us (Camden), and possibly Norcross had a very off-night (it was 4 turn-overs that killed us). But just to give you guys something to talk about, you are likely- and I mean very likely to see a Camden County/Warner Robins showdown in the GA Dome for the Korky Kell Classic.

The reason why 1-AAAAA beat metro teams every year is b/c they don’t play anybody. Just face it. This is a different, better brand of football than you’re accustomed to. You put Norcross or North Gwinnett in this region, they may have won 2 game this year b/w them in region play. Who were these teams exploding against? North’s offense was about as quick as a herd of turtles and the QB couldn’t throw the ball 25 yards. WR fans, please don’t take this the wrong way. I’m on your side this time. The reason WR beat Camden and Norcross is b/c they got better playing in 1-AAAAA. WR and NSWR couldn’t beat 1-AAAA teams with any regularity back in the day. When you have to play a state championship game every single night, you get better. That is also our downfall. You play 6 championship caliber games and then the playoffs are sometimes a let down. Sure, the metro area teams could win a 1 game playoff, but Roswell would be a .500 ball club in 1-AAAAA. That’s what people can’t seem to understand. We might take a year or two off from winning the championship. But hey, we can’t recruit like you guys can either. Put together a Gwinnett all-star team and tour South Georgia and see what happens:-)

NG may not have brought their A game to Tift. However after a scoreless 1st half on both sides- I felt confident that NG was going to win that ballgame. They were the better team the 1st half. I can’t take anything away from Tift PLAYERS, they turned it on the second half. BUT the entire game was a travisty of errors from the officiating. The boos were deafening from both sides as the refs ran from the field at halftime. I would have to assume that the caliber of refs would be unquestionalbe in the playoffs to say the least. My son overheard the refs throughout the game questioning each other re: penalties. They did not know what they were doing!!!! How can that be?? When you play your guts out- and then have to contend with idiots- it kinda takes the momentum and rhythm out of your game. Then you have CLASSLESS (and toothless) Tift fans on North’s side planting their fannies behind our bench berating our players when they come off your sloppy wet mushy South GA field -what? do yall plant peanuts in the off season? I sincerely wish the TEAM luck next week in the dome. The fans, however, get a dental checkup.

HoCo was a pretty good team but they were 1 dimensional all they could do is run. Tift County on the other hand can through and run the ball at one time in the season we were 1019 yards passing and 1013 yards russing! Therefore buckle up your chin straps and lets play some football.

boldyeller: I think it is very ironic that you call Tift fans CLASSLESS (and toothless) when it is very obvious by your remarks that you are the epitome of CLASSLESS. You mention the condition of the field. Most people who follow high school football in Georgia will attest to the fact that Tift County most likely has the nicest stadium in the state of Georgia. However, it is NOT a dome and guess what, when it rains hard the field gets wet! Maybe you folks up there have some sort of new variety of turf that will actually absorb or repel the rain. We would be real interested in touring your facility after a torrential rainstorm. But since you are so full of class, please accept the defeat of your football team with a little grace and CLASS.

About that 7-2 score against CH, it was the first game of the season with a QB that had never taken a snap before and he is a senior. Roswell scored 30 pts, but CH scored 28 pts in one of their last games. Hmmmmmmmmmm…….
Now, as far as the AJC, who cares! Lastly, the only people making excuses is a NG fan talking about his team not bringing their A game. To (By Football) I am SWD fan and I have to agree with you about the coaching at Stephenson and SWD. Both Gartrell and Buck are great coaches who really inspire their teams, but the play calling sometimes seems very uninspired. If you got some hogs on that line that can open holes against anybody then run that kind of offense. If not you need to get a coordinator who can get the most out of this great talent that comes through these schools. Discipline and creative execution will always give you a chance to win even when it appears the other team is better. Thats why St. Pius is still playing and Marist. Great Coaches at SWD and Stephenson with great programs, however if we want to get over that hump and into the Dome and further we need some creative offensive coordinators to utilize our talent to the fullest.

I SAY CLASSLESS TO THE FANS!!! NOT THE PLAYERS!!!! These boys have worked so hard this season on both teams. I wouldn’t wish a loss like that on our biggest rival! (due to officials and yes if we had the obivious pass interference called you might be typing your frustrations out on the keyboard) I was dissapointed that we were not allowed to have noisemakers (seeing that yall warned us all week how loud your stadium gets)- the police were in our stands taking them away and at the end of the third quarter when Tift finally scored a cannon explodes to our right so loud that someone could have had a heart attack. Explain that one. Additionally, I have to say- I could not believe my eyes when I noticed how segregated your side of the stands were. To the left almost directly down the middle you had black and to the right you had white. Get over it already- show some love to each other.

Let me just clarify- I said that NG may not have brought their A game to Tift. The boys played tough and with heart the enitre game- but it can be hard to overcome the momentum changes when there are eight minute conferences among the refs to determine where to spot the ball AFTER determining what the penalties were in the first place. Nothing from Tift impressed me in the first half. If that was your A game-it will be a long ride home from the Dome. With that out of my system, I want to thank my Bulldogs for the best season in the schools history…. to be cont.

Don’t get me wrong because Norcross had a great season, but what idiot ranked them 15th in the nation? Who compiles the info to be ranked nationally? Northside High school of Warner Robins is 27-1 right now over two seasons with two games to go.This is the most games Norcross has ever won in a season, so I ask again, WHO makes up this rankings. I’m a die hard Demon fan, but our rivals across town would have beaten Norcross a lot worse than Warner Robins did. Don’t tell me either that it has to do with what classification your in, because I remember a few years ago when Washington Co. was ranked. Northside is one of the best teams in the nation hands down. I’ve been keeping up with high school football for 25 years or more and they have the total package. Where is the respect?

I wouldn’t expect you to be impressed with our team, we were on the losing side of the game. Just a thought. What if we took all of Cobb/Fulton/Gwinnett/Dekalb best players from the ENTIRE county and put them in one school. Any one of those teams would probably qualify for the type of caress that south georgia hs football fans long for. now i really just say this for the region 1 fans who boast their football is SOOOOOOOOOOOOOO much better than that of MetroATL, be for real. In Gwinnett/Cobb/Fulton/Dekalb the schools are separated by blocks, not towns. Schools are being built around here every year. Talent is dispersed throughout the area, and it isn’t always paired with equal coahing talent. Our multiple REGIONS are represented throughout all 5 classes, with several sure bets to perform at a high level annually. With that being said, 1aaaaa has been strong this year but the final four is even. May the best team win.

It is true the officiating in the Tift/NG game was awful, there were bad calls for and against both sides, both teams played their heart outs. It’s a shame that the main thing that will be remembered is the pi** poor officials. With that being said…how did you expect to beat anyone ,let alone one of the top 8 teams left with 60 total yards of offense? True we did have 1 big play on a third and 20 something..but isn’t that what good teams do? you claim a pass interference was not called…but what about the three points taken from us for too many men on the field with 11?… what about the fumble recovery in your end zone which the official on the other side of the field overruled? or maybe you should’ve taken advantage of the incomplete pass at the end of the first half that was ruled a fumble..like I said it’s a shame that the officials will be remembered most in a tough game between two quality programs. but 60 total yards just won’t cut it .

Charlton County has passed the test and you can go ahead and PRINT IT. It don’t matter if all the games are played on the road. I have one question, CHARLTON COUNTY has a 22 game win streak, WHEN WILL WE GET THE RESPECT WE DESERVE?????????

ALSO, AS FAR AS THE COMMENT ABOUT US HOLDING, I THINK YOU BUFORD FANS CAN COME UP WITH A BETTER EXCUSE FOR LOSING. I THINK WALMART HAS PLAYBOOKS FOR SALE. YOU MIGHT WANT TO GET THERE EARLY.

STATE CHAMPS BACK TO BACK TO BACK If you didn’t know it means 3 IN A ROW. And for all those that don’t agree, just remember one thing—It’s in the blood. SORRY EARLY BUT I THINK YOU WILL BE A LITTLE LATE, TO THE STATE FINAL THAT IS

Holla at me in ATL GA DOME.

Boldyeller unfortunately you are right I have been to every game for the last 3 years both home and away.. yes we do have ignorant fans who feel like they have a right to trash the other players, no it’s not right but Tift county is not the only place that happens, I remember traveling to Stephenson last year and not only did they have fans trashing our players and coach, but also our band and fans.Sorry there is no cure for ignorance, but remember it doesn’t happen just in South Ga.

For the person that doesn’t know how to look up facts: Tift County 5-1 12-1 Warner Robins 4-2 9-4 Coffee 4-2 9-3
Houston County 3-3 8-5 That looks like a 4th seed to me.

boldyeller,

refresh my memory…

that “obvious” pass interference in the endzone…

was it NOT after a total miss by the refs on a Tift “lateral”?????????

That person who doesn’t know how to look up facts is YOU, BIG BLUE.I quote “Our third place team beat Gwinnett’s best…”I’m not saying that Norcross was Gwinnett’s best, but Coffee County didn’t beat them.I think it’s time for you to sign-off and take a nap.

To 1AAAAA and CHAD:

What about the “roughing the kicker” call, where the Ump actually asked the Tift punter if the ball was tipped!!! How do you explain that one?

I cant explain that one anymore than you can explain the ones I mentioned earlier like I said , bad calls were made for and against both teams. How do you explain -45 yards rushing by your QB or total of 60 yards offense? The officials were in black and white not on the Blue Devil deffense.

boldyeller: Maybe I failed to make my position clear about the Tift fans sitting behind your bench and heckling/berating your players. I DO NOT condon our fans doing that. I took offense to your comment because you seemed to be stereotyping ALL Tift fans about this kind of behavior. True, that WAS classless, but believe me, MOST Tift County fans would not behave in that manner. I can understand your disdain for that offense but your follow-up jabs about “toothless” and growing peanuts on our field was a bit juvenile wasn’t it?

My mistake, our #2 destroyed Gwinnett’s #1. Roughly 200 total yards and 3 points in two games against 1-AAAAA. What happened to NG and Norcross’ powerful offenses? Sorry. Blue Devil Block, you don’t have to defend the actions of the fans on the NG side last week. Those were probably fans from Cook, Irwin and Tuner Counties!
