Playoff roll call

Darryl Maxie

Athens Academy will win the Battle of Mismatched Nicknames. Sparta is where Athens Academy’s second-round opponent, Hancock Central, calls home. But the Spartans are from Athens Academy, near where the Georgia Bulldogs call home. Which explains why Hancock became the Bulldogs, right?

Such is the intro for a light-hearted (or lightheaded, if you prefer) roll call covering the 40 teams that should be around next week.

• Baldwin: Starr’s Mill won’t find the Braves nearly as flat as they did Ware County.

• Bleckley County: The Royals have enough left for a second playoff stunner.

• Brookstone: Dooly County knows for sure, having played it and Johnson County, but Brookstone’s better.

• Brookwood: It lost to one former No. 1 (North Gwinnett) but former No. 1 Roswell balances the books.

• Buford: Tuning up for Charlton County.

• Calhoun: Greene County came up short against Washington-Wilkes and Greater Atlanta Christian, and Calhoun’s better than both.

• Camden County: It doesn’t come up short in big games, even when it looks beat.

• Campbell: They won’t stop Peachtree Ridge’s Brandon Davis, but will slow him enough to win.

• Cartersville: Too good for Hart County.

• Carver-Columbus: The Tigers keep proving better than expected.

• Charlton County: I’m not sure what the next level is for the two-time defending champion, but Dodge County isn’t there yet.

• Clinch County: The Panthers’ strong nonregion schedule (Charlton County and Coffee) has them in mauling mode.

• Coffee: Stephenson has yet to test itself this season against a defense of the Trojans’ strength. Hiram learned this last week.

• Commerce: Best it has looked since the Monté Williams era produced a 2000 crown.

• Creekside: Griffin coach Steve DeVoursney evicted the Seminoles from their beloved Swamp because it doesn’t meet GHSA playoff standards. Sounds like motivational backfire.

• Dublin: Unlike Cook, Laney has given Dublin no reason for revenge. So the beating may be just a little less severe than the 60-0 Cook got.

• Early County: Somebody, tell Brantley County the Jefferson County joyride is over.

• East Paulding: I picked against Rome last week trying to ferret out the inevitable upset. That’s not what this is about, though.

• Etowah: This, however, is what that’s about.

• Flowery Branch: Grady hasn’t played anybody this good. This is a culture-shock win.

• Hawkinsville: I bought into the ECI hype last week — and all the way down one bracket — and the Red Devils rebutted. They’re baaaaack.

• Heard County: Can Lovett contain Dontavius Jackson? The Lions sleep tonight.

• Houston County: Corey Jarvis’ Lions pulled a shocker last year (Carrollton), so the Bears are ready and wary.

• LaGrange: Crisp County’s coach said, “If there’s a better team in AAA football [than Peach County], I want to see it.” It’s here.

• Landmark Christian: At Landmark, they love giving Devils a reason to scream. Get thee behind me, Warren County!

• Lincoln County: Larry Campbell gets win No. 400. (Yawn.) Just another nobody-else-has-done-this moment. (Ho-hum.)

• Marist: The jig is up. The War Eagles can’t realistically poor-mouth themselves anymore.

• Mays: Impressive defense will carry these Raiders past Habersham Central’s Raiders.

• Monroe: Beating Shaw will mean it’s for real.

• Norcross: Grayson missed its best upset chance in the regular season. Rematch = too late.

• North Hall: McNair should be easier than Cass was last week.

• Northside-Warner Robins: Tuneup No. 2.

• St. Pius: Pebblebrook survived an upset bid to tell the story. Now the Falcons’ story ends.

• Stephens County: I didn’t go out on enough limbs last week. Upsets don’t end with Round 1.

• Thomas County Central: Last week, Westlake was on fire. Literally. Then, the football team was on fire, figuratively, in destroying Statesboro. Methinks both flames are out now.

• Tift County: Keep Charlie Edwards ready. Mr. I’ve Kicked Three Overtime Winners may be needed against Union Grove.

• Turner County: Because I said so. Hey, it worked for Dad.

• Washington County: Syrupmakers visit “The House of Pain.” Pain-givers win.

• Washington-Wilkes: Injured Caleb King doesn’t have to be the only GAC player enrolling in college early after this one.

I guess you got to pick someone in the Griffin-Creekside game. What a matchup though. I saw 6 Riverdale games this year, and by far the game they got thrashed hardest was the Creekside game. But Bobby Rainey put a Chevy big block on Riverdale’s D on their homecoming, which was just plain wrong. That one’s a toss up. Also with a p!sspoor aura coming out of Flowery Branch these days, how can the H.S. TEAM be that good? Grady got one of fye QBs in S.Kelly plus they fresh out off the Dome last year. Falcons suck!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!111

why would you consider it an upset if Stephens Co beats Carrollton. just like last year when we beat Cartersville in the 2nd round Stephens Co never gets any respect from the AJC. seems that smog in atlanta has clogged your senses.

Plus the Grady-Flowery Branch game is at Grady. I know, if Gwinnett can’t get shined on, let Hall Co. get some. Get your mind right Daryl. Who has Flowery Branch beaten/ played to be presumed good? Gaineville? Carrollton put the Trojan to those boys last week. Sandy Creek? Not the usual Sandy Creek. North Hall? 10-1 with the same credentials, no resume. Go Knights, Falcons suck, will the real ATl stand up 1111!!!!!!!!!!!!1

Once again Dekalb County teams get no respect. Stephenson and MLK WILL WIN! You can’t compare us to anyone because you have not seem us play. We have just been overlooked. It pi**s me off. We get no respect in Dekalb. But I guess the best way to show you is to win. But I have a feeling even when we win you will say that Coffee and Houston County had a bad game and loss the game on mistakes. We’ll see!

Stop whinnning about not being allowed to play a AAAAA game in a stadium that can’t seat 6,000 fans. As a booster, school tax payer and a fan, I don’t appreciate standing 6 deep behind the end zone to watch a game. (as at the Parkview crackerbox…will NEVER go back there again until they can provide adequate seating). The Georgia play-offs, especially beginning with the quarter-final round, should be played on neutral fields anyway. At that round the teams usually are evenly matched and it is not fair to provide one team with a significant advantage. But in the meanwhile, if your school can’t provide a 6,000 seat capacity stadium you need to get back on the porch….you’re not ready to run with the big dogs.

No cream for the Coffee. I told you that 1AAAAA was over-rated. A young Stephenson team just kicked the caffine out of the Coffee. Now let’s hear the excuses. Will it be bad referees, bad field, bad lights, bad dressing room, long trip, the grass to short, the grass to tall, the stripes to white, the goal posts leaned, the bench was to hard. What’s going to be your excuse this time 1AAAAA?

By Carver - Columbus

November 24, 2006 10:27 PM | Link to this

D. Maxie, I thought that you picking my Carver - Columbus Tigers would’ve jinxed us after you picked Thomson to beat us in Columbus last week. But, as it turns out. The two best teams in region 2-AAA will be playing next week, with the potential of an all Columbus showdown in the Dome to see who will go on to represent region 2-AAA in the championship. Lagrange went down tonight, but I wouldn’t be too happy if I were a Peach County player or fan. Carver - Columbus Tigers will see you in Ft. Valley for the championship. But, first we have business to take care of in Carrollton.

And, you picked a scrub Monroe team to beat Shaw? What have you been smoking? Mr. Maxie, please keep picking against the Columbus schools. We like it when you pick against us.

No cream, as you are patting your Stephenson team (that has NEVER won a big game in your program’s history—with some of the best talent and certainly the most speed in the Peach State) on the back Region 1-AAAAA’s #2 team has just finished running up the score on a real Georgia power, Camden County in St. Mary’s. That’s right. Warner Robins beat Camden County 27-7. I would hold off on the Region 1-AAAAA bashing.

There will be a Houston County (Warner Robins) spoon stirring the poor MLK cup all night tomorrow. Mark it down. Coffee (the #4 seed in the region) has never won a big game either. I can’t believe you are bragging about defeating such a hapless program. Then again, you are a Stephenson fan. Coffee and Stephenson are like two kids that do not really want to fight. I am sure that you danced lovely together, as Warner Robins hit Camden County directly in the mouth. HoCo will do the same to MLK. The Bears will hit them directly in the mouth.

One more side note, Camden County is winless against Warner Robins…WINLESS. The Demons own Camden County!

By Northside_Football_Dominates

November 24, 2006 10:47 PM | Link to this

Maxie…Camden County came up way short. For a matter of fact, Camden County has come up short every time they have faced the Warner Robins Demons (winless versus Warner Robins). There are programs that are 10 year powers. There are other programs that simply demand excellence. Camden County’s offense stepped up for 7 points on their home field against the Big Red. Camden County’s defense stepped up to give 27 points to Warner Robins.

Maxie, you just wrote about almost 40 HS programs and wrote nothing about Warner Robins. It looks like you need to “step up!”

AJC: You guys really do stink at this, don’t you? There were a total of 40 games to be played this weekend, and you can’t seem to figure out a way to cover them? I realize it’s “hot-lanta” or “a.t.l.” or whatever you want to call it this week, but give me a break!

We’re talking about high school kids, most of whom won’t be playing organized ball again unless it’s at a military base in Podunk, Alaska or somewhere. With over 300 teams in the state, it’s understandable that you can’t cover everything, but as the biggest newpaper in the state, and the main paper of the state capitol, you have a bit more responsibility.

Really, you initiall published the brackets incorrectly for round 1, then published the scores wrong for one of the games, and now you can’t seem to be bothered with covering anything more than 30 feet outside your front door.

Then again, you’ve totally ignored some teams like East Paulding for so long that the other teams think we’re just a fluke.

Sequoyah found out (46 - 13 @ Sequoyah), and you had them ranked #5.

Rome found out (27 - 3 @ Rome), currently #6 in your “poll”.

The more you ignore EPHS, the easier it is for the boys to “surprise” their next opponent. Now that there’s only eight teams left, it will be harder for you to ignore them in your rankings, but I’m sure you’ll do your best.

Geaux Raiders!

By Sherrod

November 25, 2006 10:02 AM | Link to this

give it up Mark….give it up. ajc won’t cover you unless you fall under 1 of a few categories: 1. you’re in the metro area 2. you play a host of teams in the metro area or can severely impact how a “poster child” metro’s season will end 3. you play in gwinnett. for the record, only #3 guarantees you major coverage. otherwise, it’s a mini-write up (scores, yards, &….score) every four weeks. I’ve been wining for years regarding that one. anyway, you guys continue to do well and they’ll eventually grant you a photo op or something. Good luck in the playoffs…..

yeah, that “culture shock” of playing Flowery Branch really seemed to bother Grady as they advance to the round of 8 teams left standing in AAA - I wonder if that means a top 10 ranking this week … hmmm, do the math. Also - has any GHSA team ever gone to the Dome one year, then moved up a classification and gone back to the Dome the next year? Grady can do that with a win over Shaw - which might qualify as a “culture shock” for some prep writers …

Hey Mark and Sherrod—I have been trying to get AJC to notice Calhoun forever!! I guess it is because we are AA that they think that we are not important, but we can’t help how small our school is. We have Buford, GAC and Dublin in our group!! We are ranked #5 by AJC so you would think we would get some recognition. At least Maxie picked us to win!!

Warner Robins was the 1-AAAAA #2, Coffee Co as #3.

My issues is the lack of coverage about the biggest upset in the playoffs, Warner Robins cubbing the #2 Camden Co. Nothing in the AJC, even though Camden Co was a sure thing in the predictions for the dome. Even worse, no home press!

Unfortunately, the most heralded program in middle georgia was not even mentioned with an article after this momentus achievment. Granted our team has had it’s ups and downs this year, but to completely leave them out of the press in the Macon Telegraph is redictulous.

I’m sure the next game with Norcross will be covered in the AJC which will be the best press win or lose the Demons will get! Our boys are very tough, the Demons are far better than the 8-4 record.

Word of advise for city slickers. When you are not familiar with the program, never select against not only Hawkinsville, Dublin, Washington County or Johnson County.
