Strong start for Region 1-AAAAA
The Atlanta Journal-Constitution
When Tift County won the Region 1-AAAAA championship by a hair, head coach Jay Walls immediately realized the title came with expectations.
He gathered his team and explained to them that being the champion of a region known for winning state titles adds a little pressure.
“I said, ‘Hey, we’re Region 1-AAAAA champs, we have to represent,” Walls said. “There’s been a tradition that the top teams in this region have done well in the playoffs, hopefully we can too.”
Walls said he felt the pressure before Tift County’s first playoff game against East Coweta, because he felt like the Indians were much better than a No. 4 seed. His biggest fear was winning a tough region, and then losing in the first round of the playoffs.
But Tift County beat East Coweta 22-7 as Region 1-AAAAA went a perfect 4-0 in first-round playoff action.
The Region 1-AAAAA sweep validated the contention that the best region in the state is outside Metro Atlanta. Both Warner Robins coach Bryan Way and Houston County coach Doug Johnson said they weren’t surprised with the first-round sweep.
“No, we’re not [surprised],” Johnson said. “It’s a really tough region. I know y’all get tired of hearing it, but we’ve been in it three years and you just fight to get in [the playoffs]. And we left some good teams at home.”
Those good teams not playing include reigning champ Lowndes and Colquitt County, both teams who cracked the top five in the Class AAAAA AJC rankings at some point this season. Heck, Walls agreed that Region 1-AAAAA might have gone 6-0 if those two teams were somehow allowed in the playoffs.
“I’m going to tell you this about Colquitt, they have a group of athletes that are as good, if not better, as any in the region,” Walls said. “There’s no question they would do well in the playoffs. Lowndes would do well too.”
Now the question remains - Can the region pull it off again? Can half of the Class AAAAA quarterfinalists come from one region?
The biggest obstacle of that happening this week is Camden County, Warner Robins’ opponent on Friday. Way said the Wildcats have the best front eight he’s seen all year, and Camden isn’t exactly an easy environment to go win a playoff game.
But Way hopes the playoff-type atmosphere that comes with playing in Region 1 prepared his team for the biggest game of their season.
Camden typically blew out its region opponents, allowing only 13 points total in region play. On the flip side, Warner Robins played close games all season long. That might give the Demons an edge if this game is a tight one.
“I sure hope so. That may be the only edge we have,” Way said. “Every week in the region this year was like a playoff game - big crowds, a lot at stake. Every game was close and came down to the end. We’re battle tested, if nothing else. “

Region 1-AAAAA is tough. But, you haven’t mentioned the only team that beat the highly ranked Tifton Blue Devils. How about the Coffee High Trojans? Some strong Coffee is brewing these days and it’s not de-caf!!!

I saw Coffee Co. play Warner Robins a few weeks ago and they looked good. Their offensive line and balanced attack is awesome. Stephenson better fasten their seat belts because they are in for a ride. Stephenson defense is good but I am not sure if they can hold off Coffee’s balanced attack. One thing is for sure, its going to be a battle for the ages. Also, MLK’s game with Houston Co. will be a good one too. The question is will MLK be able to stop Houston’s RB O’Niel because no one has done so thus far. Union Grove heads to Tift Co. to face the agressive spread offense of Tift Co. In all, I think Region 2 playoff run will end this weekend.

Michael who ever you are let’s be for real man. You really think M.L.K will end their playoff run this weekend. lol, I don’t think so. People was saying that M.L.K couldn’t stop douglass RB but what happen,he got under what 90 yards. WE the LIONS are ready for Houston Co. Hell let’s play on Thanksgiving. This will be Houston Co. last week playing football. M.L.K on top by 14. Trust me when I say that, you will see.

You all will never give region 2AAAAA any credit. We still have 3 out of 4 teams left in the playoffs. I think so much attention is given to Gwinnett in the AJC that you all probably haven’t been to a region 2AAAAA game. Anytime you have Roddy Jones from Chamblee as the Dekalb player of the week 5 out of 10 times tells us that you don’t even go to Dekalb County games. So its unfair to say who is gonna beat who because all the teams have not been looked at fairly. We’ll see on Saturday morning. Then you’ll want interviews with Steph, MLK and Union Grove.

This is the type of weeekend you dream of if you are a football fan. Coffee vs.SHS, HCHS VS. MLK, TCHS vs. Union Grove, and WRHS vs. Camden. These will four good old-fashioned, smash-mouthed games with a lot of school pride and respect on the line. Who wants it more? Who will display the heart and grit? By midnight Saturday, all these questions will be settled. And in the end, I think that Region 1AAAAA will once again, shock the football world here in the Peach State. GO BEARS!!!

MLK player, I admire your dedication to your team. Remember to watch the RB O’Niel from Houston county. He helped Houston Co. accumulate nearly 500 yards in rushing offense against a good Newnan team last week.
Clubhouse, I have been to games all over the state of Georgia (and watched some on comcast too) and have seen teams such as Stephenson, MLK, Douglass, SWD, Cloumbia, Mays, Washington, Brookwood, Valdosta, Creekside, Riverdale, Griffin, Greene Co., GAC, Heritage, Salem, Lowndes, Harrison, McEachern, North Cobb, Coffee, Warner Robins, Cherokee, Starrs Mill, Roswell, Marietta, So. Cobb, Etowah, Campbell, West Lake, Statesboro, Camden Co, Central Gwinnett, Dalton, Decatur, S.E. Whitfield, Sandy Creek, Tucker, Marist and Cartersville. In all 40 teams so I think that I have seen enough football to formulate an opinion.

All the teams in 1-AAAAA are very good .Tift ,even though I have hated on them all year .I have to give them credit ,they are a very good team .They have great D and two very good players in #11 and # 42 on defense, the kicker puts the other team in bad field position.Overall I think Coffee is our most complete team.Warner Robins have always been good .Houston and Mr. O’Neal will be hard to beat.Good Luck to all the teams. My Packers should still be playing ,we just happen to be in the toughest region in the state.Lowndes,CChs and Valdosta are at home 1-AAAAA is a mans league. All these teams are battle tested.

HAPPY THANKSGIVING EVERYONE.
We (MLK) seen the tape against Newnan and Houston Co. Mr.O’Neal will have a very bad game when he play MLK. Newnan have no Defense MLK is known for their Defense. If Lithonia HS(1-9) scored on them anyone can. That was a win for Houston Co. from the start. One player can’t win a football game. Mr.O’Neal is not good against a good defense team anyway. (1AAAAA)You will have one team out the playoffs this weekend sorry Houston Co. Try it again next year, this year is not your year.

What many of you don’t understand is that O’Neal isn’t are only running threat. Our wing back had 100 yard games against Newnan and our fullback had 83. If you focus on one of them than the other two will hurt you.

What are you thinking saying Mr.O’neal is not good against a good defense.Wtf have you seen our region .All the games are close .All our teams have very good defenses. You guys up north play 1 or 2 hard games .Down here every game is hard .We are 4-0 in the playoffs for a reason and you will see how we do it DOWN HERE.When you play a 1-AAAAA team we play defense and you BETTER button up your chin strap.Tift County hit O’ Neal and he kept coming He gained 194 yards on the #2 team in the state. .Houston with their running backs run the wing -T better than any team I’ve seen.Yall barely beat Union Grove and Tift destroyed them..Houston runs that wing -t way better than Ug.You guys will be in for a long night.I love Martin Luther King the man ,But your team will have to stop 3 good running backs and a running Qb .I don’t know his name but Houstons #4 will break 1 if yall key on#22 to much.Put the women and children to bed .1-AAAAA will be coming to a town near you and they won’t be smiling.Smash-mouth football at its finest. The south is back.We will be 8-0 after this week.Houston County is our 4 seeded team and they can win it all.Dirty South baby!!!

By Michael
November 23, 2006 10:00 PM | Link to this
George:
By the way, I checked the Northside Warner Robins’ website and their defense allowed 262 Houston Co. yards during the game as oppose to Northside’s 288 yards gained. Sounds like Northside has a hard time containing Houston’s offense but Northside won the game which is what matters.
By george
November 23, 2006 10:13 PM | Link to this
I totally agree that Northside is the BEST team in Georgia. Most of Houston County’s yardage came when the game was basically out of reach. In fact the last touchdown was a total fluke. My point was nobody runs against the Eagles. The great Fernando Pitts (Westside Macon) had 1,300 yards entering the game with Northside. He had 34 yards on 16 carries. The only way anyone will beat the Eagles is with a good passing game.
By george
November 23, 2006 10:16 PM | Link to this
If 1-AAAAA is the bomb then Northside owns the bomb. They beat two of the four playoff teams from that region, and the games were not that close. Tift should have lost to Houston County. A bulls* call on a fair catch, and then allowing the Tift returner to run the ball 40 yards was the difference in an overtime game.

Dear Warner Robins Football Fan, Little Brother has grown up. Prior to 1996 the Demons dominated the Eagles, but the worm has turned. The Eagles have won 5 of the last 6, 7 of the last 9. The Eagles have a 85-4 record in the regular season since 1998. Demons? Say what you want, if they played again, the Eagles would still win. They have also vastly improved during the course of the season. We have no control over when games are played. The idea is to be ready whenever that is. Northside is now 12-0.

Let me repeat myself “by george”,I want nothing more than the Eagles To Dominate AAAA and win a state title.I am a WRHS fan first and HC/NSWR second.BUT,I’ve heard this talk year after year with the same results…no state title. You see what happened to Griffin. They had convinced themselves they were state champs four games to early.Don’t do the same.Remember it’s all about the quality of coaches and players in Warner Robins that makes a difference not a loudmouth begging for attention. In the previous e-mails it sounded like you just wanted someone to acknowledge you.Play smart and you’ll get you due reward.85-4 means nothing and I mean nothing without the title attached at the end.Like it or not you’re still the little brother. Can you say I want a state championship too just like you big brother? All in good fun,I’ll be at the games when possible cheering you on.NSWR all the way

Just for the record, I was expressing an opinion in my original post, as I am entitled to do. Michael had indicated Eric O’Neal could not be stopped. I simply said NHS had shut him down (go back and read). I further have stated that NHS has shut down every running game, and to beat them you have to be able to pass. In responding to the various bragging about 1-AAAAA, I said NHS had beat two of your playoff teams (Fact). I’m well past the age of needing to be “acknowledged” or “heard”. I’m probably old enough to be your father or grandfather, but still entitled to my opinion. Just for the record I hope all of the Houston County teams continue to do well, and I have supported all of them through my attendance. I’ve been to all NHS games, including all away games, and I’ve attended all home games of WRHS and HoCo when NHS was not playing. I do know a little of what has been going on for the past 32 years of football in Warner Robins. I will continue to express my opinions. If you don’t like them, don’t read them.

This is a great site. I see where Houston beat M. L. King and Warner Robins beat Camden. Region 1AAAAA is 7-1 in the playoffs so far with 3 of the 8 remaining teams respectively. Even if they all lost next week it is still a great testament that these teams are better than good. NSWR Eagles is probably the best football team in the state of Georgia, but they only played two of the 7 Region 1 AAAAA teams. Go through 7 straight games of Lowndes, Valdosta, Colquitt, Tift, Warner Robbins, Coffee and Houston County. Tell me how good NSWR will be come playoff time. How many key players will be hurt. It is a different brand of football. I personally guarantee that 2 Region 1AAAAA teams will be in the Dome. The State Champion will be from Region 1AAAAA. I promise!

I think some people just don’t understand the kind of footall tradition that exists in the 1 AAAAA conference and number of region and state championships that exist within the conference.
