Toughest region lives in South Georgia

Which is the toughest region: 1-5A, 7-5A or 8-5A?

Without question, it’s Region 1. It has the most depth and could very easily have four teams ranked in the top 10. Right now, No. 5 Coffee and No. 7 Tift County are Region 1’s only ranked teams, but Warner Robins and Houston County have proven to be top 10-worthy. And don’t forget about the defending state champions, Lowndes.

Region 7 is top heavy, with No. 1 North Gwinnett and No. 3 Norcross, neither of which, by the way, has faced another top team at full strength. After North and Norcross, the drop off is steep. Collin Hill’s ultra-stiff defense hasn’t received much help from its offense, and talented Peachtree Ridge has not lived up to expectations.

Region 8’s big guns, No. 4 Central Gwinnett and No. 7 Brookwood, own victories over Region 1 teams in Warner Robins and Valdosta respectively. But, with Parkview struggling, 3-3 Grayson and 2-4 Berkmar are the next two in line.

Houston County and Warner Robins are the 2 best teams in 1AAAAA. (edge goes to WR as they beat the Bears) and each will be top 10 after this week. Tift, Coffee and Colquitt, Lowndes are all good teams but not in Central Georgia’s class.

Go ahead run the Wing-T if you didn’t have Eric O’Neal that had 193 yards on the ground you wouldn’t have done that good. The rest of your great running backs accounted for 61 yards if that much. Your QB was 2-9 for 22 yards ya’ll need to learn to throw good enough to catch these good D-Fence’s off balance. Anyway good game like everyone this year. I can’t wait to see some South Georgia teams smash a few Atlanta teams.

Please don’t forget about region 8-3A. Stephens County and the rest of the region has proven themselves as a tough region to compete against. Stephens County has an offense that can put up big points and a defense that could stop some of the one GA’s best offense.

Hey HOCO Loco, when was the last time Northside or WR beat Tift Co. in the regular season or the playoffs? You don’t know? I don’t either. I played on the ‘90 team that beat NS regular season and WR at their place when they were ranked NO 1 and had two thousand yard rushers. Central GA will never have the mystique of the South!!!!!!! GO BIG BLUE!!!!!!!

Hey “Big Blue”there is a good reason Northside or Warner Robins hasn’t beat Tift County recently.Hard to do when they’re at home every year come playoff time. They may make the playoffs once every 10-15 years.

Big Blue…it is interesting that you brought Northside into this conversation. The Eagles do not even play in Region 1-AAAAA. I agree with David. The region is the best team in 5A. I also agree with Warner Robins Football Fan. Tift County would have to reach the playoffs and actually advance to attempt to compare itself to Northside, Warner Robins, Parkview, Valdosta, Lowndes, Camden County, Stateboro, Griffin, Brookwood, or any other power in this state.

FYI…Northside has embarrassed the Region 1 representative in recent years (Coffee was run out of McConnell-Talbert 52-14 and Lowndes 28-3). The last time Northside played Tift County was December 4, 1997. Tift won 14-6. Since that loss Northside is 101-12 (0.894), with 5 trips to the Round of 8, 3 trips to the Georgia Dome, and two trips to the State Championship.

What has Tift County done in that timeframe? This is an honest question. I have not made it a habit of keeping up with programs that do not even reach the playoffs. Sorry.

Hey WR football fan, name another school in the old 2-AAAA that has won a state title besides you and Northside. You can’t. Middle GA has be a two man wrecking crew for many years also known as one of the weakest regions in GA. Now you have to play every night strating tomorrow. By the way, the GHSA changed the way the regions play in the playoffs about 10 years ago. Lucky for you:-) P.S. Northside is the best team in Houston Co. Go Big Blue!!!!!!!!!!

Hey Northside Football Dominates, all those wins came in an inferior region with no competition. So you won 2 out of 3 games against the South in 20 years. You want to hang your hat on that???? In case you forgot, TC has played for a title in the last 10 years. If NS is soooooo tough, MOVE UP!!!!!!!!!

Hey Big Blue..guess what! You still have been sitting home virtually every year come play-off time.By the way how many region and state championships do you have? And by the way it’s a three team wrecking crew right here in middle ga.How many high school teams from tift county make the play-offs consistantly virtually every year? I do like your one statement…Houston County does produce wrecking crews every year.

Big Blue give us your W-L record for the last 10 years.I started looking it up and was to embarassed to type it for everyone to see.Go ahead you fill us in!

Just switch leagues then. What’s the real reason NS stayed in 1-AAAA? You want to switch leagues for about 5 yrs or so? We’ll see those hyper-inflated stats fizzle out. All I know is no school in that county beat me when I played from 90-92. We took down HOCO last night, and WR is next.
P.S. Ducthtown, Jones Co., Stockbridge, Westside, Baldwin, Upson-Lee, Forest Park, Jonesboro, Lovejoy, N Clayton, Mt. Zion, Riverdale. Great Basketball league. This is the Big East of High School Football MOVE UP!!!!!!!

Big blue,I know who you are and your lucky Tift County let you bring the water bottles on the field during time-out during the 90-92 season. Maybe you can make the waterboy hall of fame. Now how about that W-L record again. On a friendly note we consider middle ga part of the south Ga region. We are certainly not in N.Ga.

It’s not my fault they hired some terrible coaches the past ten years. And NS still didn’t beat us during that time. You play in a pansy league. WR I wouldn’t start talking yet. So you beat Valdosta. Who hasn’t????????? When was the last time you made it to the title game in the largest classification. Seems you always get stopped by a team from 1-AAAA or 1-AAAAA. Bottom line is the combined records of NS and WR is lousy against region 1. Just face it.

Do you even know how to play football? I was All-State Honorable Mention my senior yr as a DB and WR. What about you? What ever happened to Icky Woods’ nephew? The only time you’re considered truly a South GA team to us down here is when you play the hated Parkview, Brookwood or any other magnet shcool in the Greater Atlanta Area. Sorry.

Big Blue, congratulation you win a few games this year and you think your king of the waterboys. We made it and won the state in 2004 in the largest classification we were allowed in,4A. So how is it again we “always”get stopped by a team from 4A or 5A? If our record against region 1 is lousy…what does that make your record? I don’t think AJC will allow me to type that.Hey,what about that region/state/W-L record again.Maybe if you type it,you will have a reality check.I do appreciate TC’s defense this year, pretty strong.

Played DB from 79-81(38W-2L).Won state 1981(15-0).Ooops beat a couple of S.Ga teams to win state.I know TC has almost always been considered a whipping post for your”S.Ga” teams with a very few years as the exception.Just review your record or ask tham if your memory fails.

WR fan I looked up our record against the teams from Houston Co, NSWR, And WR, guess what? Tift Co. ownes your teams, we have a record of 2-3 against HOCO, 7-2 NSWR, and 3-1 WR. My math puts Tift on top by 12-6. So now go put that in tour pocket

WR yall’s record against region 1 is poor so maybe you need to go and re-evaluate what history has put on the table for you I’ll type the numbers for you ok, are you ready for them, “BRACE YOURSELF”, 26-14 region 1 wins, enough said!

WR fan, will you ever beat NS again? You guys are doing all this talking now b/c you may not make the playoffs this year. Where is Luella and Stockbridge when you need them. We have had 6 coaches since 94 and the only win from that county was on an alleged missed FG against HOCO. Now that you’re in a real region now, we don’t loose to AAAA teams.

Big Blue,I can’t help there’s no one in your county intelligent enough to hire a quality coach the past 10 years. Our Demon motto is “tradition never graduates”,we have hired from within.Hate talking past all the time but we do have 4 state championships, tied w/Lowndes for the second most from region1AAAAA.And yes 3 of those 4 went thru S.Ga.How mant state championships did you say you had again.Oh yea,by the way stop and look at your loses the last 5 years to schools less than 5A.I thought you didn’t loose to anything less than 5A.After thought,we are very much in the play-off picture.Where did you get we might not make the play-offs from?Wishful thinking!

I loved the comment from Northside Football Dominates!! I’m not a NS fan, but he makes one very important point, and it’s one most people have forgotten about. The Griffin Bears!! I played on the 1978 team that tied mighty Valdosta IN DEATH VALLEY for the State Championship. We have had some lean (by our standards) years lately, but WE’RE BACK!! Made the Final 4 last year, are ranked #2 right now, have the toughest defense you’ve seen in a long time. We just beat Riverdale 49-28 Friday. Those 28 points were almost more points than Griffin has allowed ALL SEASON COMBINED!!! We have outscored our opponents by a combined score of 326-61. Other than Riverdale, which has a great offense, Griffin’s 7 previous opponents had scored a combined total of 33 points. Since Griffin And NS are in the same region, I guess we’ll have to see who the “baddest” is; I’m sure we’ll wind up playing each other for the Region title. No-one else in Region 4-AAAA is going to come close to beating either us or NS. Whoever wins that game, we’ll BOTH make it to the State play-offs, and will probably be seeded 1st or 2nd in the State. So, to all you people who have forgotten about those Bears, ESPECIALLY the AJC’s sportswriters, pay close attention. WE’RE BACK!!!
