Football: Still a team sport

Curtis Bunn

So where is the lesson in what Buford did to Caleb King and Greater Atlanta Christian Friday night?

That King is overrated? No.

That GAC’s line didn’t do the job? No.

That Buford is the better team? Now we’re getting somewhere.

King’s transfer from Parkview to GAC was supposed to catapult the Spartans to sure-fire championship status. And it very well may do that. King is that talented.

But Buford showed that the sum of a lot of good parts can conquer one dominant player. With a committed effort, the Wolves stacked the line of scrimmage and put on a strong display of tackling in limiting King to less than 60 yards. Sixty.

In the process, GAC was rendered ineffective. Buford never let up; King was a nonfactor, and the Wolves took an impressive 20-7 victory.

This is not to minimize the impact of King, who justifiably is regarded among the top running backs in the nation. He deserves the accolades because he has shown this year in AA, and previously in AAAAA, that he is a force.

But that he was contained in a significant way, effectively shutting down GAC’s offense, shows the power of team. The best player on the field does not mean the best results.

The team that performs better as a team will conquer the team with the best player every time. If GAC did not know it before Friday, it does now.

I didn’t know where else to post this comment. I hope this is an OK place. Sure, Colquitt County hasn’t beat a giant this year, but for them (5-0) to be ranked behind a Camden County team with a loss? That’s crap.

I had the blessed opportunity to be at the Buford-GAC game in person and just have one comment…Both teams deserve everyone’s applause. I am a Buford fan but I also feel as if GAC is a team to be reaconed with. King, even though shut down by the wolves, has so much potential (not that this is a surprise to anyone out there). The other players on GAC showed such talent and pride all throughout the game. Way to go both teams!

since you’re talking AA take the time to look up jareon smalls(WASHINGTON WILKES).HE’S A TRIPLE THREAT.but he’s being overshadowed by a senoir rb who have not tasted any playoff pressure(sat on the sideline half the season last year with a bum ankle, while jareon came in as a sophmore and led washington wilkes to the state championship game).he’s like a seventeen year old reggie bush. if you think i’m kidding you need take a serious look at this kid.he got 4-2 speed,he’s got the moves and most important he’s got the will.check him out .

Since the topic is high school football. Someone from the AJC or ABC or channels 2,5,11 or even 17 should have been at the Cartersville / Cass AAA game last friday. I have witnessed alot of football in my day and have never seen anything like that. I am the guy who goes to the GA Dome during playoffs without a team to root for and sit all day from morning to night to catch some good hs football. That game takes games of all games. If you have the means I suggest you get a copy of that tape and view it.
