Gwinnett vs. DeKalb

The girls Class AAAAA Final Four brings two Gwinnett vs. DeKalb matchups:

South Gwinnett vs. Stephenson

Collins Hill vs. Redan

The Comets broke Campbell’s press, but can they do the same thing to Stephenson? I think the Comets can, because they are great ballhandlers and passers. They can score on anyone. However, Stephenson probably will hurt them on the boards, and the Jaguars are much deeper. This should be a classic.

Redan gets a rematch of last year’s title game, won by Collins Hill 69-52. It will be interesting to see how the Eagles respond to their first true test of the tournament. The Raiders are big and experienced. They return all their key players from last year. Maya Moore vs. Porsha Phillips will be fun to watch.

In Class AA, the championship game could be the fourth Wesleyan-GAC matchup this season. Wesleyan won the first three, but the last one wasn’t decided until the final seconds.

So who do you think will bring home the state titles?

It would be great to see a South Gwinnett vs Collins Hill matchup in the championship game since Stephenson has already had a chance against the Lady Eagles this year. South seems to be peaking at just the right time. Hopefully they will dispatch Stephenson and get their chance.

A great accomplishment for both Gwinnett teams (and DeKalb for that matter as well). South is groovintg, but so is Stephenson and they have more talent. The Jaguars win by 4. Collins Hill wins by 25 in the semi-final, and then by 22 in the final. Yes, they are just that good.

Forgot to metnion that Wesleyan was going to win AA. A shocking prognostication, I know.

To NY Joe - I think the South vs Stephenson game will be the opposite from your pick. In looking at their common opponents this season, Stephenson beat Brookwood by 12 points and Campbell by 10. South played Brookwood twice and won by 17 and 22. They beat Campbell by 17. Either way, it will probably be a great game. I don’t think Stephenson has more talent than South. The Lady Comets have a great offensive team and play great defense as well. It will be a battle, but I predict a South victory. Good luck. It is a great accomplishment for all the teams to have made it this far in the playoffs.

I really think south is gonna take it all the wat this year and bring home the hardware. I go ther and trust me they peaked last year it’s just that antionette howard wasn’t eledgeable to pay and gia locket was injured. A very sad way to end our great run last year.(we had the exact same record this year). And don’t underestimae south’s depth talent-wise. Either way it will be a great game. Good luck to all.

Ask anyone who has played at the Gwinnett Arena.. it is hard to shoot from the outside there because of the whole depth perception concept. South Gwinnett relies on outside shooting. What happened when they shot terribly against Shiloh? They lost. Stephenson has no outside shooting what-so-ever. Redan is talking too much.. and really motivating Collins Hill. In my opinion, that would be the last thing you would want to do.

Last year the cheesebrain who covers high school basketball for the AJC commented, after South Gwinnett had won the championship a total of ONE time, “Can you say dynasty”? That was just before they lost to Wheeler of Cobb County. This year the headline blog here is Gwinnett vs Dekalb. Huh?? This is a little after the fact. The 5A state championship was played last Saturday between two Cobb county schools (South Cobb and Wheeler). Wheeler who is ranked #1 in the state and has won the title three of the last four years (Can you say dynasty??) was the winner. Teams from Gwinnett and Dekalb may now go home and argue over next year.

If James (above) had read the article he is writing about, he would see that it is discussing girls 5A basketball. If I am not mistaken, there are no Cobb County teams playing in the final four for the girl’s title. In regards to the boys, if Wheeler thinks they have already won the state championship, they have given Beach, Redan and Norcross something to post in their locker room as they prepare for the next 2 games. I would certainly wait until after the last game to crown myself champion.

South is going to win vs Stephenson no doubt… adn then the South / Collins Hills game is going to be VERY close!!

I’ll give Gwinnett their props but Dekalb, get real. I think Dekalb girls deserve to be where they are but 5A boys Cobb is much better. Dekalb got there because they played in the South brackets. If they were in the North it probably would’ve been a second Cobb county team in there.

Stephenson Girls are a good team, but they do not have the best athletes and best attitudes on the court. If South can get ahead which they proved they can against Cambell, then I can see Stephenson self-destructing. I went and saw the game where C.Hill played @ Stephenson. And correct me if i’m wrong but the game was in Stephenson’s favor for maybe most of the first half. I remember seeing a few bad fouls called and some tempers flaring and C.Hill taking over the game. I see South taking over this game because of there ball handling skills and there ability to shoot not only from outside (Winchel, Clarke, Lockett, Dudish, and Howard), but also from the inside (Clarke, Lockett, Richards, Howard.) On another note from a previous post from J.B. I have talked to a starter on the South team. Actually i’ve talked to all of them, but they say it is weird shooting at the arena because of the advertisment band that goes all the way around the arena. It changes colors every 5-10 seconds or so, and if your not used to it, it could temporarily distract you and put you out of your game. I think the experience that South has playing at the Arena will also contribute to the winning this game.

On the real… Stephenson has had a pretty rough start to the season but don’t sleep on them. Because they’re peeking and playing there best ball of the season. Not only did they get passed their 2nd round of the region against Redan but also WON their 5th straight region title and this is their 4th straight final four appearance. Don’t get me wrong souths a good team but stephenson’s aggressive defense is second to none.Collins hill will beat Redan but it will be closer than most expect. Stephenson will be the next State Champs!!

I agree… Stephensons attitudes are horriable and South has good attitudes. Stephenson is going to get knocked out and the South vs. Collins Hill game is going to be the best game ever to happen in Gwinnett.

It is amazing how good your teams are NOW that they are in the final four.. Fair weather fans are the worst.. Ain’t nobody sleeping on Stephenson, Redan, South.. Enjoy your time in the Arena. Stephenson wins a good game against South.. Jags are too deep and don’t have to rely on the outside shot, that is brutal in the openess. Stephenson wins with tenacity and putbacks on the offensive glass. Redan should be in the final four.. They should have won games all season.. They should have been ranked in the top 4 all year but once again they have failed to really play together as a team.. Well, things get worse for them on Thursday. They play a true basketball team. Eagles roll and match up again with the JAgs for the title..

HONESTLY, IF YOU THINK ABOUT IT, WHO ARE ALL OF YOU TO SAY WHO IS GOING TO WIN OR LOOSE. ANYTHING COULD HAPPEN AND I CAN TELL YOU NOW THAT THESE FEW LITTLE NEGATIVE COMMENTS ABOUT STEPHENSON PLAYERS WILL ONLY DO THE ONE THING YOU DONT WANT, *FIRE THEM UP IF YOU ARE A TRUE SCOUT, YOU WOULD SEE THAT DOING THAT ONLY GETS THERE GAME AT ANOTHER LEVEL. IM NOT SAYIN THEY WILL LOOSE, IM NOT SAYING THEY WILL WIN, ALL IM SAYING IS POST YOUR DAMN COMMENTS AFTER THE GAME!!

By bballfan

February 28, 2006 10:01 PM | Link to this

I agree with “unknown” above that a team or fan should not get another team fired up by saying negetive things about the team. However, I feel the South girls are an excellent all around team, and will be able to get by stephenson. As far as living on the 3 point shot, South has proved throughout the season that they are able to score “in the paint” as well as shoot the 3-pointer. The Lady Comets are a class act, and, win or lose, they have shown that they are deserving of being in the final four (as well as the other 3 teams). I think everyone can agree that Collins Hill is the team to beat in the tournament. In my opinion, South is the one team that would have the best chance to do just that. All four teams worked hard all year to get where they are, and the coaches, players and fans all deserve a lot of credit.

Stephenson will win the big dance

By JAB

March 1, 2006 08:05 AM | Link to this

Stephenson has already won a state championship in it’s young life and has been there every year. Be real about it Gwinnett County, Collins Hill just have one good player in Mya once she is gone that’s it. Look what happen to South Gwinnett boys. They get one great player who has moved or they recruited from Dekalb or Atlanta area. Gwinnett doesn’t have the coaches or talent to win or compete year in and out with Dekalb! BE REAL FOLKS!!!

By Buck

March 1, 2006 11:59 AM | Link to this

How can anyone say that Gwinnett doesn’t have the coaching ability or talent to win or compete year in and year out when for at least the past 5 years, a Gwinnett team has been at least to the Final four. And for “UNKNOWN” up there. We are fans of the game, and we are discussing our thoughts on it. If it really doesn’t interest you, don’t read it. but we have the right as fans to talk and discuss this topic. Nobody is putting anyone down on here. And Fre, i’m not a fairweather fan. I don’t even like south. I’m a fan of all sports. I just happen to know alot of people and have a lot of time on my hands to watch all these games. We can talk baseball and golf and swimming if you want to…. And i’ll be at the Arena Thursday and Friday night to watch the games. No matter who is in it.

OK Jab,

Guess you didnt watch the last Collins Hill vs Stephenson game. Maya Moore wasnt the highest scorer. As a matter of fact she wasnt even the second highest scorer. Shantell Black,SR(signed with Ol Miss)and Jordan Jones,JR(being recruited by several ranked DIV I schools) were the top scorers. So, if a team wants to believe it is only Maya…they will lose like everyone else.

By KD

March 1, 2006 01:37 PM | Link to this

Jab, you are letting your stupidity show through. Maya Moore is definitely great and most certainly is a stand out on Collins Hill’s program. But, Maya only has one State Championship ring. Now I know that Collins Hill has won 3 of 5 State Championships and this year could make 4 of 6. Most people, you Jag may be an exception, go to high school 4 years…Oh yeah, let’s see if they win it Maya’s senior year that would be 7 out of 9 years! I am pretty sure the lineup would have changed some over a decade!!!

OK. Anyone really want to know AAAAA has only been in existence since 2001. Since that time in Girls basketball out of 5 State Tournaments, Collins Hill(Gwinnett)3 Wins, Parkview 1 Win(Gwinnett) and Stephenson 1 Win (DeKalb). Going back 26 years when AAAA was the largest it appears that DeKalb County only had one other State Title and that was Stone Mountain High School in 1997. If you dont believe me check it out at GHSA.net it will give you the history of winners both boys and girls. Sorry Jag you just arent right on this one

By Facts

March 1, 2006 02:15 PM | Link to this

Not to rub salt in your wounds Jag, but, in the History of State Championships and All Divisions A - AAAAA a span of 60 years. It appears that in Girls Basketball DeKalb County has only won three State Championships. To put that in perspective that is 3 State Championships out of a possible 275 Championship Winners. I dont know if math is a strong point of yours, but, that is not much to brag about! And, in the last five years across all A-AAAAA Gwinnett County has had 11 out of 25 State Championships Won! WOW that is impressive Gwinnett County! Gwinnett County 11 in 5 years, DeKalb County 3 in 60 years!

AGAIN, YALL ARE IN THE PAST OF THE CHAMPIONSHIPS. WE ARE TALKIN ABOUT 05-06 SEASON AND THATS IT! IT ISN’T LIKE THESE TEAMS HAVE THE EXACT SAME PLAYERS FROM LIKE 10 YRS AGO SO LETS JUST LOOK AT THE NEW TALENT GOOD OR BAD AND NOT EVEN DECIDE BUT JUST THINK OF WHAT A GOOD GAME THIS IS GOING TO BE. AND FOR BUCK, YEA THESE ARE THOUGHTS TO A REGULAR FAN, BUT IF U LOOK AT IT FROM A PLAYER’S POINT OF VIEW, STEPHENSON AND REDAN ARE THE UNDER DOGS. AND ABOUT HALF OF THE COMMENTS ABOVE ARE IN FAVOR OF COLLINS HILL AND S. GWINN. HOW WOULD YOU TAKE SOMETHING LIKE THAT. LIKE I SAID ITS ONLY ADDING FUEL TO THE FIRE IDIOT!!

I don’t know who will win, but, I’ll tell you what - the Lady Comets of South Gwinnett have an amazing support system! The teachers, the students, the administration, all adore and support these young ladies 100%! And besides being amazing athletes, these young ladies are awesome scholars and good people! And that overshadows any basketball victory. Rock on, Comets!

Okay, Gwinnett County teams is Good and deserved to be there but Stephenson High is loaded; how many High School programs that you know about has won championships and compete every year like Stephenson. I really like competition and Stephenson girls is just the team who develop girls and boys. The most girls over the past 3 years to play division one basketball. Go Jags! I just like to bragg on those middle class neighbor hood students…
