Will girls basketball upsets continue?
The Atlanta Journal-Constitution
The seedings didn’t hold during the region tournaments. Shiloh surprised South Gwinnett, Grayson ousted Parkview, Dacula made it all the way to the finals and Hebron won a region crown. Collins Hill and Wesleyan restored some order, playing like top seeds. Now we’ve got eight first-round state tournament games to look forward to, and to break down:
I like Collins Hill, Wesleyan, GAC and Hebron to advance with relative ease. Buford, on the other hand, faces a monumental task going to Augusta to play Laney. A local coach who scouted Laney said the run-n-gun Wildcats deserve the No. 1 ranking they share with Wesleyan.
South Gwinnett is more talented than Dacula, but the Falcons are at home and they are not the two-girl team (Abbie Daniel, Brittany Jarrard) some people think. All five starters can score. That said, I expect the Comets to come out with more urgency than they showed in the region tournament.
Shiloh is on a seven-game roll but again, Mill Creek is dangerous, thanks to shooter Shelbie Pool. Watching the point-guard duel between Jessica Baker and Porsha Porter should be fun.
In Brookwood-North Gwinnett, points will be at a premium. This one could come down to whether North’s Jolie Efezokhae or Brookwood’s Chioma Okoli asserts herself as the best player on the floor.
Those are my thoughts. What are yours?

Shiloh has a great chance to meet up with Collins Hill in the region semi’s. Can we beat Collins Hill, everyone has their day. For us to get through our first two opponents, our two shooting guards (Bell and Parker) are going to have to step up. Our “big girl” in the middle (Strothers) gives everyone fits and she has just gotten stronger as the season has progressed. It’s going to be fun to watch.

ShilohDad - Shiloh-Collins Hill would be the quarterfinals, Elite Eight, whatever you want to call it. I agree it’s a good possibility but you’ve got a long way to go first. Personally, I’d love to see Courtney guard Maya. I think she’d defend her well inside, maybe keep her off the glass, but Maya can step out and shoot and I don’t know if Courtney can keep up on the perimeter..In any case, good luck this weekend.

If Okoli has to assert herself as the best player on the floor, then Brookwood is in trouble. Ashley Green is the key to their team, and she will outplay Jolie. Even still, North has played inspired and disciplined all year so I think they win here but lost to talented Campbell in the next round. Mill Creek has a great chance at an upset over Shiloh. The Hawks have some girls who can play.

If South Gwinnett can win their first two games, they have a tough task of Campbell in the quarter finals. They lost to Campbell last year, barely, without Gia Lockett. Should be a good game.

Here we go again. It doesn’t matter what Stephenson does, they get no respect. It is unfortunate what happened to Morrow, but I think the way Stephenson is playing now, the two players lost would not have mattered, only possibly a closer game.{ By the way, just in case you didn’t get the news, Stephenson won the Region AAAAA championship.

Larry, I agree with you whole-heartedly. I think Courtney/Maya match-up would be pretty awesome. Courtney can guard the perimeter player as she did against South and Brookwood. We’ve got a shot (a long shot) but a decent shot. There should be some great games this weekend.

Top Cat - Even though this is a Gwinnett blog, you are welcome here. Congrats to Stephenson on the region title; that is a brutally tough region. The big question I have is whether Morrow will be back at full strength for the tourney….

I too would love to see Courtney/Maya match-up. Courtney is very quick for her size and as long as she stays out of foul trouble she will be a formiable opponent for Maya who rarely gets much of a challenge. Shiloh overall has a complete team. Offensively, they have can break your back inside and outside on a good night. Not to mention the awesome defense they’ve been playing lately. I BELIEVE they can go all the way.

I agree, a Courtney/Maya would be a great game to watch. Shiloh has come a long way this season and they are a great defensive team. I would stack their defense up against any other team.

How could Etowah not be a higher seeded team that North Clayton? Etowah’s only losses have been to St. Pius & Marist both top 3 teams. This could be a rallying cry for the defending state champions.

To the Shiloh supporters: Do ya’ll really think Shiloh could even challenge Collins Hill? The Eagles have the best team, offensive or defensive in the state of Georgia! They have too many offensive weapons for any “good” defense to try and contain.

Jim, any team can have their day but I do believe that Shiloh has a great chance against Collins Hills. As someone stated, Mya has not had a formitable opponent that is going to challenge her on both ends of the court…..Courtney is one and probably the first. You don’t receive a “full-ride”/scholarship to a top-tier D1 college because your game is one dimensional. Our point guard doesn’t get interest from Tennesse because she is an okay player. Shiloh is solid on the boards (Lori), deadly from the 3 point line (Caneisha and Amanda) and can take you off the drive or bust a 3 in your face (Jessica).
I take nothing from Collins Hill. Collins Hill is very, very good but on their squad, if you contain Mya and that point guard, those other girls may have a tough time picking up the slack. Just by the way, no one thought that we had a chance against the then ranked number 6 team in the state but you see what happened to South, right? It was one of those nights and it we’ve have 9 of those nights in a row….coincidence? You tell me.

Shiloh shouldn’t be looking too far down to Collins Hill. If they get past mill creek, they look to face a #3 seed that is really a #1 seed in Milton. I believe they are ranked in the top 5 in state.
just because you guys had 1 good game doesnt mean yall are going to win state now. and i highly doubt that baker is getting interest from the university of tennessee.

If memory serves me correctly, Maya did play against the number one ranked senior in the nation…and she had more points than her. So if that isn’t competition defensively, then what is?? Not going to take away from Shiloh, but if CHHS plays their game, then I think it will be a done deal by the half.

Shiloh Dad: 1. “Maya has not been tested”-Maya guarded and was guarded by several of the top players in the country when Collins Hill went to Phoenix, Arizona. For starters, she played against Monica Wright (top 5 seniors in country, signed with Virginia) as well as Tina Charles (#1 senior in country, signed with UConn)-whom she had 41 points on. Courtney Strauthers will be no challenge. 2. Back to Phoenix, Collins Hill played the best teams in the country, and were beat in OT in the championship on a technicality. Enough said. 3. Shantell Black is the best point guard in the state. However, she is not the 2nd leading scorer and the Eagles have 5 future D1 players.
In conclusion, Collins Hill is ranked #2 in the United States, while Shiloh doesn’t even crack the top 10 in the state.

I think all of this back & forth is great, but the bottom line is, these ladies on every team go out every single day working to improve their game, develop their skills, and train to compete in the GREAT game of basketball. Collins Hill is truly a powerhouse team in it’s own right. Chances are, they will win another state championship but that is not a guarantee. It’s just nice to watch these ladies achieve the sucesses that they have and go on to whatever college or university they chose and become productive citizens who will understand and know better how to deal with life which is full of wins and loses. BEST WISHES TO ALL THE TEAMS!!!!

Okay, this is getting a little more intense than it’s suppose to be. Did you read my initial response in regards to Collins Hill? I said, and I quote, to the creator of this blog: “We’ve got a shot (a long shot) but a decent shot”. The Shiloh supporters on this page said that it would be a great match up “in our eyes” a Courtney/Maya match-up…..did you miss that part? And the one good game comment?….if memory serves me correctly, we’ve had 9 good games in a row now. Shiloh is not looking down the road at a Collins Hill/Shiloh match-up. We know that there are 2 formitable opponents standing in our way. And the other comment about Baker, unless you are a scout from TN, you don’t know what you’re talking about.
We like playing the role of the underdog. We’ve suprised quite a few people so far and we will continue to do so. And just for the record, it’s not a lock that Collins Hills can get to that point in the tourney either……remember this, every team has their night!!!!!!!!

I didn’t say it was a lock either. But if the Eagles play the way they have been playing the whole year to get to this point, then I do think that it is a great chance that they will repeat. This program is unbeleievable and I know firsthand that the coaches know what they are talking about and the players listen. Good luck Eagles…I will be rooting for you.

no… i am not a scout from tennesee. but i have seen jessica baker play many a time, as i have also seen the university of tennesee play plenty of times, and if jessica baker is getting recruited by UT, then shantell black should go to the WNBA out of HS.
my predictions.. shiloh gets knocked out in round 2.
my final four. South Gwinnett vs. Stephenson Collins Hill vs. Beach
all that said, i wish the best of luck to all of the gwinnett county teams and hope that they all do well in the tourney. i just hate it is gwinnett vs. gwinnett in the first round.

ohyeah, not bad choices based on past performances. My girls are playing well and I know that are going to “bring it” every night. I also hate that it’s Gwinnett vs. Gwinnett in the first round. If it wasn’t, someone from Gwinnett would win state easily. It’s going to be some great games this weekend and going forward.
Good luck to your squad, Collins Hill. I truly hope that we get to meet up in the elite 8.

Speaking of Upsets—-Probably the best team in AA/A basketball for the girls are W.D. Mohammed Caliphs…Those girls have all the pieces to win the state this year, however they lost to AA Paidea at the buzzer in a season finale, and then lost another buzzer beater to SWAC. They were the #1 girls team in the state before the lost two games…Its kinda of wierd seeing them as a 3rd seeded team in the tourney…This team is good when they want to be, but in a win or go home scenario…I’m kinda of sketipal as of late

All I can say is: Let the best team win!
Come on everyone, I thought you would see by now by what has been going on the courts as a GREAT example of what determines a WIN. IT’S DETERMINATION—-not rankings, history, or university signing. If you have a good mix of individuals who know the game and are determined to win—-they will WIN. Basketball is a physical game but it is also a mind game.
If a team is HUNGRY enough for a WIN believe me that will break any “Goliath” team down… and there is one Shiloh team member in particular that has a PERSONAL VENDETTA with Losing….. Let’s just say there is a trend in the regular season with Shiloh losts…that played out the “UPSET” when it came to the Regional finals and the latter games leading to the finals.
I always tell my sister that no team is an underdog or champion team. It all comes down to the GAME that the players bring on that day to that court when that whistle blows….Why?… because every game is different. There is always an underlining reason why a team may have lost a game and why a team may have won.
Remember basketball is both a physical game and a mind game.
So HATS off to ALL the players/schools that made it to the State Playoffs and let the Best Team win….
So BRING IT! ShilohSis
