Stephenson Six an unshakable core
The Atlanta Journal-Constitution
From the first weekend of the season to now, Stephenson has gone from shaky to unshakable. Week by week, the Jaguars gradually cemented their play, to the point where they now have as much chance as anyone to be the last AAAAA team standing.
If the number of Division I-A players on the roster were the barometer, Stephenson assuredly would wear the crown. A half-dozen big-college athletes make it happen for the Jaguars, almost certainly more than any other team in the state.
And come the playoffs, when the deeper into it you get the tougher the competition, having six studs is quite a luxury.
Friday night at Hallford Stadium, the Stephenson Six — Marcus Ball, Jermaine Cunningham, Kelvin Sheppard, Mario Tynes, Andre Anderson and Perry Riley — held together a team that was challenged throughout by game East Coweta.
In that core of talent lies Stephenson’s heart. Oh, the Jaguars have loads of skilled players who contribute mightily to their cause. But the aforementioned seniors ignite the fire.
Their 46-22 victory over East Coweta was a case in point. The Indians made a strong statement to open the game, marching down the field mostly with power runs by splendid Stanfred Philpot for a field goal and 3-0 lead.
Stephenson looked lackluster, to say the least. But then the game turned in a matter of minutes. Underrated quarterback Michael Harper connected with Sheppard, a linebacker playing tight end, for a 52-yard gain, to the Indians’ 4 to get things going. Anderson used two plays to score the touchdown and Stephenson led 7-3.
On the ensuing possession, Cunningham led a defensive surge that allowed East Coweta only three plays. The punt to Stephenson was received by senior Jordan Jackson, who split three defenders, broke a tackle, cut left across the field and sprinted to paydirt — a 67-yard touchdown return that moved the Jaguars in front, 14-3.
Suddenly, the Stephenson contingent, which had been rather subdued, warmed itself in the cool night air by exchanging high-fives and hugs. Resilient, East Coweta battled back to within four, but the Jaguars’ leaders led.
Riley took the kickoff 41 yards to the Indians’ 49. On third-and-8, Ball received a pass in the flat with no blockers in front and fought his way to a 10-yard gain and first down. Anderson burst for a 24-yard gain. Finally, Ball took it 6 yards for the touchdown and a 20-10 cushion.
That’s leadership. One of the top players in the country, Ball is the ultimate leader. He moved from linebacker to safety, allowing him to cover more ground. Translation: He could wreck more havoc.
Ball, who scored three touchdowns Friday, has his choice of the top programs. Sheppard and Riley have committed to LSU. Tynes might end up at Central Michigan. Cunningham is debating among Auburn, Florida, Tennessee and Virginia Tech. The hard-running Anderson is considering Georgia Tech, Stanford, Ball State and Boston College.
“Those guys lead us,” coach Ron Gartrell said. “We have better chemistry on this team than we did on the other really good teams we’ve had in the past. And it’s the best defense we’ve ever had.”
Big things were expected of Stephenson four years ago, when Ball’s brother, Reggie, and Kregg Lumpkin led the Jaguars. This Stephenson team is better. It’s still well-coached, but more sound defensively, more diverse offensively and more explosive on special teams.
From a 21-point loss to open the season to Brookwood to one more victory to get to the Georgia Dome. That’s a lot of ground covered by a team with realistic visions on traveling even further.

Half time score at Lowndes. Lowndes 34 - Union Grove 0. “Despite” three Lowndes turnovers, a Lowndes touchdown and a Lowndes 2 point conversion called back for holding. All of this in the 1st half. Now that is scary! Good thing Lowndes wasn’t hitting on all cylinders. Huh! A very illusive and good throwing quarterback for Union Grove couldn’t stay off of his back side. A common problem for opponents of the Lowndes defense. Lowndes got off to a slow start this year, but trust me State of Georgia.
They’re Baaaack!!!!!!!!! So Stephenson, take down Parkview and we’ll see ya in the Dome. Be sure to be there.

As I was traveling on I-75 tonight coming from the Northside WR vs, Thomas Co. Central game which was a very very good game, I listened to two different High School football shows on the radio. Both of them predicted a Parkview vs. Lowndes match-up in the Ga. Dome. They totally looked past Stephenson. Warning!!! Stephenson has one of the best defenses in the state and Parkview has already proven if you stop Caleb King…they lose (ie…. Norcross held him to less than 80 yards and he barely got over 100 against Brookwood). You do the math…Stephenson has a very good chance of beating Parkview on Stephenson’s home field next Friday. But if they let Caleb run wild, the same thing will happen to them as Roswell (Caleb got about 250 yards to lead Parkview to victory).

THe Jaguars WILL win the game v.s. the highly over rated parkview panthersand their over rated running back will be shut down. The Jags defence is immaculate and with backs like Andre Anderson, Perry Riley and Marcus Ball they will get all points needed to knock of the Panthers. OH YEAH LETS GO JAGS

Stephenson might beat Parkview this year because Parkviews QB SUCKS!!!!! But, Stephenson will get blown away by Lowndes or Brookwood. With as much talent as Stephenson supposedly has, you think their scores throughout the year would be more dominant. STEPHENSON…..NOT ALL THAT but they will beat Parkview.

Ok Curtis, Stephenson has six D1 prospects on their team. What makes that different then any other year? So why are they not ranked #1 in the state with those six D1 prospects? Same reason as every other year. They don’t have the discipline, selflessness and teamwork that is found on championship teams. Stephenson does not put a team on the field. They put 11 individuals on the field that spend the entire night either running their mouths, beating their chest or a variety of other things in an effort to draw attention to themselves, not their teammates. They are great players, but are playing for the wrong reasons. They have to many guys that think like Terrell Owens and Randy Moss instead of Marvin Harrison or Warrick Dunn. If the Stephenson coaching staff can ever fix that problem then watch out. Stephenson could have a program that is spoken as highly of as Parkview, Camden or Lowndes.

I read where Stephenson gave up around 360 yards of offense to East Coweta!!!!!!
Great defense????????? And it is not like their offense left the defense on the field the whole game. Great defense?????????

Yo and Jeff…You mean that Stephenson has too many African American Players on their team?..cause thats what its sounds like you want to say. ( i.e no discipline, ) what evidence do you have to support any of your comments besides the simple notion that all majority black teams play that way…Stephenson is a Great team that is still not even 10 years old yet..give them credit where credit is due, and stop drinking and that huge bottle of Hatorade…Even if Stephenson wins on Saturday you red necks will find some reason to bring down the Jaguars.

Supaman, where did race come into this? Though many of the other quality, disciplined programs in the state may have fewer African-Americans then Stephenson, their rosters include many and in key positions. Being African-American does not mean that you have to play without discipline or like a team. Don’t bring race into this. Stephenson’s parents and coaches accept this behavior out of many of their players like Ball. Parents and coaches from other programs don’t. It is that simple.
and by the way, how can you assume we are rednecks and not African American? You sound like the hater to me.

Joe, you are right on with your comments, latter and former. Nowhere in these postings was race ever mentioned or inferred. Thank you….
How do you know what a Stephenson parent allows… i take offense to that because i am one and i dont allow…what is it ” no discipline ” or whatever bs you said…point is you know nothing about Stephenson, the community or the parents/coaches besides the fact that they are African American which gives you the notion that they are a bunch of T.O’s…would you be saying the same thing if Parkveiw was black and Stephenson was white?….And dont give me this bs about putting race into this because it already was in it when Jeff Foxworthy the Redneck wanted to call Stephenson a bunch of monkeys…oh yea when did Reghie Ball become selfish?

I saw Stephenson play in the Dome against Brookwood and saw how Marcus Ball acted that game along with a couple of other Stephenson players. If you are a Stephenson parent that does not allow his child to act like the game is all about him then I applaud you. Teaching our children how to act with class and to respect others has nothing to do with our race. As for Reggie Ball, hard to believe that Marcus comes from the same family tree.
Hopefully it will be a great game Friday night.

JOE YOU DO NOT KNOW ANYTHING ABOUT STEPHENSON PARENTS IF YOU SAY THEY ALLOW THEIR CHILDREN TO ACT OUT OF ORDER. YOU KEEP MENTIONING MARCUS BALL, SOUNDS LIKE YOU HAVE A PERSONAL PROBLEM WITH HIM….ONE STUDENT..DONT BE IGNORANT AND BASE A WHOLE PROGRAM OFF ONE STUDENT! I HAVE FOLLOWED STEPHENSONS PROGRAM FOR YEARS AND I HAVE NEVER HEARD ANYONE SAY THE WERE NOT DISCIPLINED. IF THEY WERE SO BADLY BEHAVED YOU WOULDNT HAVE SO MANY OF THEM THRIVING AT MAJOR UNIVERSITIES.
THIS YEAR STEPHENSON HAS PLAYED MORE LIKE A TEAM THAN EVER, YOU DONT HEAR ABOUT ANY STARS BUT INSTEAD YOU HEAR ABOUT A TEAM EFFORT. THE ONLY PROBLEM SHS HAS HAD IN THE PAST IS THEIR LACK OF EXPERIENCE(ONLY 9YO), THIS YEAR THEY ARE WISER AND MORE EXPERIENCED AND WILL TAKE THE W.

Never said I wasn’t pulling for Stephenson over Parkview. Beat Parkview?? Been there, done that. Ready for some new meat. I never said Stephenson wasn’t disciplined. Just said “360 yards offense to Coweta?” “Great defense?????????”
Lowndes has just as many African Americans (I thought blacks was a more politically correct term these days) as they do whites. The blacks are just as disciplined as the whites and with both we won the State Championship last year. As a youth pastor who ministers to both black youth and white youth I don’t have time to look at the color of ones skin. Nor do I go around using terms such as Redneck, Niger, Cracker, etc. I just look at the color of the uniform of the team on the other side of the line of scrimmage when Lowndes is putting a hurt on them. I must confess, my neck does get a little red sometimes when it gets a little too much sun. Called sunburn. So you caught me Supaman. I am a part time redneck, too!
So why you hatin and dissin on me like that? Lowndes is still going to throw down on whoever they play in the Dome. Pview or SHS.

First, nice article by Curtis.
Second, I am tired myself of hearing Stephenson has nothing but thugs and we are so undisciplined and all of that. I am a proud 2003 SHS graduate so I KNOW first hand what kind of program we have. Many people say we are undisciplined and we are thugs based on what a few have said and have never seen us play.
Third, let’s not turn this into a race issue because I firmly do not believe that is true.
Fourth, SHS is well coached all the way around. We have not gone 60-14 over the last six years just being an ok coached team. We have not gotten to the third round of the playoffs three of the last four years based on having ok coach’s.
Fifth, we are a very young program (this being our 10th year) and we just have not gotten over that hump of getting past the third round. Many talented teams throughout professional and the collegiate level don’t win championships every year even though they have the very best talent. That is just a part of the game.
So SHS let’s just get a good win this weekend against Parkview and take each game one at a time.
Anyone care to email me regarding anything please do so: slimatlsoulja@yahoo.com

all I have to say is say what you want, but stephenson will be in that fourth round game, and for all you out there who is still stuck on that brookwood game get over it because stephenson at that time wasnt team we our now. we’ll line up against any body and wup em.
every one wants to say we have no discipline. we have disciplin and if it seems like we dont we still have the talent to make up for it (11-1)while these other teams that are “disciplined” dont have our level of raw talent to make mistakes so they have to be.
what every one should do is stay off of stephensons back and see what happens cause we could care less of what you think of us.

I too think that the color of the skin has nothing to do with either being disciplined or not. I tend to think the “thickness” comes into play in how some people react to certain observations. Let’s call it something other than discipline then, but someone from SHS please describe in your own words the situation with the 3 personal foul penalties at the end of the Brookwood game involving the SAME player. Was it discipline that kept him out there playing, or indifference? Was it justifiable frustration that the other 21 players and thousands of fans ….just had to overlook and understand this one players lack of control. Should he be rewarded and coddled for showing us our own prejudices for daring to call un-disciplined play what it is; instead of labeling it a “cultural mis-understanding”? But, lets not label it anything but what you yourselves would label it. So here’s your chance…You tell us what was so on display there as SHS finally got the stage they rightfully deserved.

i’m back, and i need to make several addresses to these bloggers…
to mike scott: thanks for the clarification on blacks vs. african-americans. those types of statements let us all know who’s who.
i saw stephenson friday night for the first time this season. i’d heard the hype and read the press clippings and was very critical just like most others. but the stephenson six made believers out of me and the east coweta fans i sat with. stephenson just outran east coweta and from what i saw out of parkview, the panthers are not much faster.
to southga-boy: stephenson is not the most overrated AAAAA team, not even the most overrated in metro atlanta — that label belongs perennially to roswell. a few years back this title would have gone to lovejoy. mcfarlin needs to write book called “great expectations” because the hornets show you how to reach the playoffs and lose a lead every year. better yet, i’ll give you three more atlanta area teams ahead of stephenson: douglass-atlanta, harrison (marietta) and north gwinnett.
stephenson is notorious for slow starts but give them their due..the jaguars are one of eight left standing. 11 wins a in a row. maybe gartrell doesn’t doesn’t have all their recruits registered (kidding), but if stephenson is overrated, then dacula is equally overrated…brookwood pounded the falcons and they haven’t lost since. brookwood grounded parkview and they haven’t lost since. three teams on equal footing, and none of them are overrated. the only other team central lost to was parkview…four of the final eight teams lost to brookwood. i lean toward the broncos to win it all.
to the gwinnett faithful, let’s make a comparison: last year collins hill won a region championship (7-aaaaa) for the first time in school history. 10 years of football, 1 region championship, and that was after the eagles moved out of the region with parkview, brookwood, and south gwinnett. by comparison, stephenson in 10 years has won its region championship at least three times (because it’s been three of the last five years).
several of you will get your chance to see stephenson for the first time next week, when they play lowndes in the dome in front of a state television audience. win or lose, they are worth the price of admission, and who knows how fast they will be on that dome turf the second time around.
to everybody: let’s all do more homework. prep sportswriters all over georgia do a great job in capsulizing and explaining this kid’s game to us and the ajc is but one source for this great competition we are all obsessing about. yes the reporting is partisan but how could it not be? “your team,” “my team,” we all say it. i try my best to be fair in my observations, and i “observed” six of the better football talents in georgia friday night. bunn knows that college recruiters all over the country will read his column just like we did. look forward to signing day and wish these kids the best of luck.

I’ve stood on the sidelines of every Stephenson game and yes it is true at times there are discipline issues or lets say kids being kids. Leaders must be groomed and challenged to meet their destiny. This past game I witnessed what very few others did, Marcus Ball consoling #28 of East Coweta after he was taking the loss very hard. What a stand up move. Hey let the kids be kids and play a wonderful hard knee knocking game that fans from both sides will be talking about for years to come. Where the big boys in this game can we act like it.

This game will be close, it will come down to coaching decisions. Stephenson will have to play a great game defensively. The Parkview Panthers Offensive line will have to match the speed of the Stephenson Defense. They have one of the fastest Defenses in Georgia. Since Defense wins Football Games I give Stephenson a slight edge if they tackle Friday.

My son is a starter for the jaguars. The kids play together as a team and also do things together on the weekend as friends. Yes there are a lot of talent on the field and only a select few are being mentioned, but do believe there are other kids out there being noticed by colleges also. When comparing two individuals we must remember god made each different, so it is not fair to compare Marcus to Reggie. Let the kids play football and may the best team win.

Supadad, my question regarding the SHS player with 3 personal foul penalties in a row was a fairly straight forward one: What would YOU call it if it wasn’t a lack of discipline? Take all the innuendo and stereotyping out of it. From what I see your answer being it appears that perhaps the answer is; unbridled emotion, or perhaps frustration at losing a close one. All justifiable given the situation. But does the fact that the coaches allowed the player to stay in the game after the second unsportmanlike penalty at least give the appearance that there is a “lack of discipline” involved? Either from the coaches or the kid? Granted, it was one kid in one game and by no means should we tarnish the whole program. But was there anything that could even resemble concern among the coaches or parents that his actions that night; on a pretty sizable stage, could have negatively impacted the image of SHS? Does it not occur to anyone that this kind of behavior and the coaches acquiessence to the players tactics actually promote this kind of negative stereotyping? Why call it simply “emotions”. Emotions are involved in virtually any competitive environment, that’s what makes the game fun. It takes discipline and a sense of respect for the game to play within the rules. I know SHS as a whole plays within the rules and does so with discipline. Discipline, by the way probably comes into the equation off the field as much if not more than it does on the field. As it takes discipline to commit your off season to workouts and summers to running and lifting. Ask any athlete about the discipline involved and the thing they will acknowledge is that the discipline most valuable is their own disciplining of their mind. If an athlete can start with the discipline from a program and its coaches or the parents supporting the program it certainly will go a long way towards disciplining himself to make the sacrifices necessary to accomplish more.

Stephenson is probably the most overrated, underacheiving program in 5-A. All these D-1 athletes they’ve got(supposedly)and yet they continue to LOSE YEAR AFTER YEAR AFTER YEAR in the early rounds of the playoffs. Personally, I think the problem is coaching. When you’ve got athletes this good(allegedly)their talent should be maximized(frankly, I don’t care what COLOR their skin is!!)and it simply isn’t.

Panther Till I Die Stephenson has been open for 10 years and Parkview for over 20. I would think Parkview would have more players in the Pros. Mostly, with the number of D-1 ball players coming out of college this year that finish Stephenson. Stephenson will be able to they have 4 if not 5 in the pros.

Please, let’s leave the racial incindiery stuff out. These kids have nothing to do with that. It just makes Georgia seem so…..GEORGIA. Maybe SHS can do better this year but if they don’t I won’t be surprised at all. P.S. GO GRANGERS!!

panther til i die,
you say you were a three year starter but where did you go after that, how many of your senior class are still playing football. Stephenson produces athletes and college students. i would to have loved having a state championship ring but……………..Going to school free and playing Four more years of football was much better.

Get them down and they start playing “brother ball
Why dont you just replace that word with the one that starts with the N so you can say what you want to say

Supaman All you Red necks are the same..this is the most ignorant comment that i have ever heard on ajc, but im not surprised but i really feel scared if the Jags win the Parkveiw parents will be riding through Stone Mountain with their white sheets and ropes trying to make amends for their lost.
Wow, Supaman this also is one of the most ignorant comments that I have ever heard on ajc or anywhere else. I live near Parkview and when is the last time anyone rode through Stone Mountain with sheets on their head? Halloween. I think Lost is a TV show on Wednesday’s so you don’t have to worry about the sheets & ropes. Your an idiot. Why don’t you & Panther Till I DIE go back to school together? Maybe you can both learn something.
I can’t imagine Panther Till I DIE is a former player for Parkview, because his comments & spelling are pathetic. If you are a former PHS student, then shut the F**K up and go back to school.

Panther Till I DIE I seriously doubt you are a former player or student at Parkview.

I’m sorry, but race issues are prevalent in athletics. Fisher DeBerry and Joe Paterno have both recently said that black athletes do and will greatly improve their schools’ chances of winning. Lou Holtz alluded to it while at Notre Dame. Adolph Rupp had to be beaten by a bunch of no-name black kids from Texas before he saw the light. Bobby Knight was on the ropes before he gave in to recruiting black players. And the list goes on.

Panther Till I Die,
If you’re even telling the truth, obviously all you did at Parkview was play football because you skipped ALL of your grammar classes!!
I did some fact checking. Firstly, Parkview has reached the quarterfinals for 10 consecutive years, not 8, and as a Parkview alum and THREE-YEAR STARTER harping on tradition, you should know that. Secondly, Parkview has never reached the state finals four consecutive years, which means you could have never EVER played in 60 games. 56-4 is wrong. In 1999 and 2003 Parkview finished 11-2. Did you redshirt or something? Maybe you needed a fifth year in the classroom, because you were d@mn good to start at Parkview as a sophomore. Answer this for all of us: Did you win or lose your last game as a Panther? And why have you not played in one since?
Thirdly, Parkview has been open nearly 30 years. Nine in the pros is not that awesome, especially if you’ve maintained status as one of the larger schools in North Georgia. That’s another lie…if memory serves me correctly, the AJC ran a story earlier this year stating that Westlake (south Fulton) has put more players in the pros than any other high school in the nation. Go look it up and bring us back the names of 9 active players (you can’t) and then answer why the two who are on a team (the Stinchcombs) have not even played this year.
Lastly, It’s Stephenson, not Stepheneson. At least show the kids the respect of spelling the school’s name right.
If you ever want me to put on you on blast again, hang some lies on this page anytime.

Thanks stat boy. Like I said I doubt that he has ever stepped onto the Parkview campus.

Cool beans David, I saw the Parkview alums the other day. But PTID’s comment was that 9 Parkview alums were active on pro teams (I guess he meant football, baseball, soccer, etc.) And exactly NONE (0) have played in 2005 and only (2) made a team this year. He’s dead wrong and I just wanted to call him on it.

Comcast will televise this game Friday night. It should be a great game.
My former neighbor and Parkview alumnus is shining at SMU. This is a great story. His dad died his senior year of high school & he went on to sign with SMU (where his dad played). I remember when he found out about his father dying. He scored 4 touchdowns the next night.

David, That is a nice tribute to “J”. This board needed something positive. “J” was an assistant coach for a youth football team along with myself and he showed up ready for our team on ths Sat after his father passed. “J” is a inspiration to all former and future Panthers.

David if you read the whole topic i stated that after a very racial comment from another poster..but fact of the matter is Parkview is a hell of a program with tradition but im sure they have struglled before, htey havent allways been perfect Stephenson is only 9 years old and is trying to get to the same level of tradition and winning as Parkview…Its not fair to put down the Jags ONLY because they havent won a state title i mean hell it is some pretty damn good teams in GA.

Great Job Stat Boy!
This going to be a great game. The Stephenson vs. Brookwood was a very good game, until Stephenson mad the bone head turnover late in the second quarter.

If Brookwood remember, Mr. Smith only had 11 yards on 7 carries in the first half of the game. In the start of the second half, failed to make the adjustment on defense on the opening drive of Brookwood.

I here all the talk. We all will see the results on friday night after STEPHENSON shows up and plays their game.
Why bring up old stupid stuff. How penalties has that stephenson player had since, only 1 if that.
Stephenson is a TEAM of about 56 not 6.
Stephenson will win with out a doubt!

What team scored the highest number points against Brookwood. “Jaguars” of Stephenson. Who held Brookwoods number one running back to just 24 yards at the half and less than 175 at games end. Bing Bing, right again. “Jaguars of Stephenson. Now if it had not been for two of Stephenson number one division college prospects being ejected from the game, I believe we have a diffrent outcome. Oh yes, one other note Brookwoods star running back has put up over 200 to mid 300 yards on teams they have played. Now, here is a little something for all of you that chose to overlook Stephenson, Put your best thinking cap on, crank it up to maximum thinking, and get it right. Mark My Words, Stephenson will win over Park View. It is thier destiny.
