Gwinnett vs. Cobb

Blogging about football in the Big G.

My colleague Todd Holcomb points out that Cobb teams haven’t fared well when visiting Gwinnett in the playoffs.

They’re 2-15, to be exact.

Now Marietta travels to Brookwood, Kell goes to Dacula and Walton plays at Central Gwinnett.

Will Cobb be 2-18 late Friday night? Or 5-15? Or something in between?

Everyone knows that Gwinnett dominates Cobb and North Fulton in Football. When was the last time a Cobb or N. Fulton team won a 4-A or 5-A championship in football? The record speaks for itself. I’ll say that Walton has a chance against Central, but that’s it…and Walton is certainly not a lock against the Black Knights.

Maybe wait for Wheeler and basketball season???

well i think that a cobb team can beat a Gwinnet team, and Marietta is gonna prove that too, i play for the blue devils and its time that teams in Cobb start getting the recognision we deserv, specially Marietta

Brookwood over Marietta. The Broncos are warming up for a December home game against, oh, say Camden? Marietta, a solid team, just picked the wrong year to go into this bracket. Broncos by 14.

Kell at Dacula: The acid test for the Falcons. They’ve been brilliant this year, but how will they fare against OTG (other than Gwinnett) competition? Pretty well, I’d say. The Falcons will put a cork(y) in Kell’s game plan. Dacula by 10.

Walton at Central: Make or break time for the Black Knights. Walton is a strong team in a strong region, but so is Central. GC’s “D” stuffs Walton while Beau geaus wild on the other side of the ball. Central by 14.

December home game against Camden? The only time Brookwood will be able to play Camden is in the dome.

Brookwood only takes a home game if Lowndes somehow falls and either Parkview, East Coweta, Union Grove, Central, or Walton pull some magic out of their rectum and make it to the championship game.

Gwinnett is Great! We consistently dominate the playoffs every year. It’s not that the Cobb schools don’t have good teams, we just have better ones. It’s as simple as that. The only possibility that a Cobb team can beat our boys this year is if Walton can pull off some magic and knock off the Knights. I hate that stadium anyway.

Cobb vs. Gwinnett? I predict that Gwinnett will put an end to the Cobb football season tonight. Although I am a Parkview fan, tonight I will definitely by in favor of Brookwood winning just to prove that once again Gwinnett teams are superior in this game.

Gwinnett Sweep.

Congrats to Central Gwinnett on the comeback tonight. The refs helped you out at the end, but it should never have come to that. Somebody needs to talk to your students (NOT the football players, they were very classy for the most part) about good sportsmanship though. That display after the game with the taunting and trying to pick fights with a team that just lost a gut wrencher was completely classless and needs to be dealt with. Lowndes will bring you back to reality really quick next weekend. Leave your students at home…they need to GROW UP!! If I were a CGHS staff member, I would have been totally embarrassed by those kids behavior. There is no place for that garbage in high school sports PERIOD!!

Speaking about garbage… During most of the game, while Central was on its knees, quite a few of the Walton students were taunting and even throwing a plastic bottle of two. My question is, why is it that Central has bad sportsmanship and not Walton? …hmm…

By Steve

November 12, 2005 01:32 AM | Link to this

Okay, Jay, I didn’t look at the brackets, but the point was made tonight. The Broncos are on a roll. Dacula was dominant as well! Parkview and Central are going to have to step it up a notch or three next week, though, or they’ll both be taking inventory the following Monday. I don’t envy Central its road trip next Friday. Into the belly of the beast go the Black Knights…..

Well Friday night has come and gone and the real winners prevail GO GWINNETT!!! Walton may have had a chance against Central Gwinnett but they didn’t come thru now did they? Central Gwinnett has the leading sacker in the county and no one really says much about Damomd Wilson The defense in the second half literally stomped the Walton and Raiders, it was a fantastic second half played by Central Gwinnet, (I graduated from Walton) my kids go to and Graduated from Central so I was pulled but Central was fantastic!!!! I understand the following behind the quaterbacks and all but I think too little is said about the defensive teams and I think thats wrong the defense needs more recognition!!!

By Steve Skelton

November 12, 2005 10:35 AM | Link to this

Ok “Not”, I didn’t see that “taunting”, and I am sure some of it happened (Our folks don’t always behave…first to admit it), but that doesn’t make what the CG kids did at the end any better. Just hope no one got hurt. Good luck at Lowndes next week, you’ll be lucky to get three points. The whole “they did it too” mentality is lame and disgusting.

Well, I must say that Central Gwinnett doesn’t hold all of the ‘bad sportsmanship’ cards… At the Brookwood game last evening a group of Marietta students found it fun to pelt the Brookwood Band members with coins as they waited to enter the field before halftime. A Marietta police officer came over to help, but the coins continued to fly! And, a Marietta player (#22) actaully found it necessary to SPIT ON A BAND MEMBER and several instruments! Now, Cobb, please don’t preach to Gwinnett about good sportsmanship!!! Through 11 games this year we weren’t treated this poorly by the fans from any other school, INCLUDING CGHS!

Whether you think the Refs helped Central out in the end or not, the Refs must have helped Walton out in the first. Do you forget the backward lateral pass from you quaterback that the receiver dropped and Central recovered? Thats a fumble in highschool and the Refs let Walton retain the football. Central’s defense in that game, like the Collins Hill game was phenomenal and should get more recognition. It was an amazing game that came down to the last seconds but if Central was to lose, Walton’s defense would have stopped them. Refuse to Lose.

I can’t take anything away from the Central Gwinnett team, they played an AWESOME second half. Just wish that folks would teach their kids good sportsmanship, that’s all. The players were 100% classy. I shook several of their hands on the way out and told them good game. Some of the student body was classless, that’s all I can say. Sorry to hear that the Marietta folks were less than pleasant at Brookwood…not too surprising actually!

Hey alan, You look like a dum A$$, Marietta high school isn’t a cobb school. It is a marietta county school, no affelation with cobb. your probably a loser band parent anyway thats tired of johhny getting picked on in the band, suck it up life goes on its just a couple of pennies. If you can’t handle having coins thrown at you don’t go to the game stay at home with your mommy.

If you want to talk about bad sportsmanship look no further than the Brookwood-Marietta game! Not only was my car keyed by some Marietta students (next time don’t do it in front of a cop) but with the clock winding down the Blue Devils defense tried to take out Cameron Smith by continuing to pile down on him when he was already down. There is no reason why a team should try to intentionally harm another player!

John Scarbrough, If you are a proud Walton parent I feel very sorry for your kid. Calling someone a “loser band parent” is really sad on your part. Everyone knows Marietta High School is not part of the Cobb County District, but for this grid it looks like the AJC just considered it to be. Either way y’all lost so get over it. Gwinnett is better than Cobb in football. Period. The numbers don’t lie.

Just heard the game has been changed to Saturday, I wonder why. Is it because the 5 to 6

hour drive, and then having to deal with Camden is a bit much for any team. Camden succeeded

during their run at the championship in 2003. Another school from the ATL area catching a break

from the rigorous road trip during playoff time. If Dacula would have done what was necessary, they

wouldn’t have to travel. Same goes for the Brookwood’s and Parkview’s also. Lowndes and Camden

will ensure the title game will be played down in south GA. Why is it that the semi’s aren’t played

at a neutral site. The venure is good, but who benefits, teams traveling 20 to 30 minutes or

teams from down south that are undefeated traveling to the Dome. Things that make me say ummm. Camden over Dacula, next victim Brookwood.

Jenn sorry to hear about your car. I hate to see the kids behave that way, but unfortunately kids will be kids and emotions run wild at play off time. I have to fault the refs at the Brookwood-Marietta for the late hits and piling on. They were very slow on the wistle. There were many what appeared to be late hits (and should have been) especially toward the end of the game but the refs had not blown the whistle in most cases. A couple of tims the lin judge threw a flag for late hit and the head ref pulled the flag because he had not blown the whistle. I am not accusing those refs of favoritism, just bad officiating. Late whistles cause serious injury to the players. I think those refs are dangerious.

By Jenn

November 14, 2005 04:04 PM | Link to this

The refs have been horrible at the Brookwood games thus far. In the Norcross game they couldn’t count the yards correctly. In the Marietta game there was a phantom pass interference call did you see that? It was blatantly obvious the guy fell on his own there wasn’t a defender within 3 yards of him! Who gets to play on Saturday? This bracket system is seriously flawed. No way should Brookwood have to travel to Fayettville, we have the better record! Oh well we bring more fans to away games then most do for their home games. Sorry, but its true.

By Albert

November 14, 2005 05:41 PM | Link to this

I agree with you on the ref calling against Marietta, everybody makes mistakes but those late whistles are trouble. I have been waiting to watch the game again. The first half of the game is already on comcast on demand (I’m watching it now). The second half should be there tomorrow. Now I have instant replay.

I have to agree with Jenn on the bracket issue. Why with Brookwood ranked #2 in the state coming in to the playoffs, are they seeded below Starr’s Mill. In fact the same could be said for Lowndes having to play at Central, and Stephenson at Parkview. Also with Brookwood ranked #2 they should have been in the bracket oppostie Camdon Co. so they would meet in the state championship. With this screwed up bracket the real state championship will be in the finals. Who creates these brackets anyway?

Brookwood is a proven entity having already beaten four of the eight teams remaining in the playoffs as well as 9th ranked Marietta, and at least doubling the score on all of them.

The refs made a bad call last friday night at the end of the game and sent an unworthy team on to the next round of the playoffs. But good luck Central Gwinnett because you’ll need it… it should have been the Raiders.

Again I feel very sorry for you that the only way to feel better about yourself is by throwing insults and threats around. What kind of man would hit a woman who is speaking her mind? Anyway this is supposed to be about high school football. The question was will Cobb County schools start to do better in the playoffs vs. Gwinnett County schools. For this year, obviously the answer is no. LET’S MOVE ON!!!

John Scarborough - aka “Proud Walton Parent” - Please grow up!!!!! If you are going to classify yourself as a parent, act like one. If this is your normal behavior, what a disgrace and embarrassment you are to your family. Your may call yourself a “Proud Parent” but can your kids say that they are “Proud of their Parent”??

schwarz you obviously have no clue what you’re talking about…you should be hanging out with lowlife like john scarbrough aka big talkin beyotch. harrison hasn’t ever won a football championship. they lost to parkview in the 2000 championship game and it was probably the last time a cobb school will play for the championship. after that parkview won it two more times without losing a game. camden and lowndes have won the last two years. either way you and sissy scarbeyotch should be banned from posting your meaningless opinions. you for being clueless and him for being a such a pathetic example of a human being.

Albert & Jenn must be the same person. The brackets have been setup and rotated for years. How teams place in their region determines which part of the bracket they play in. I was not setup for #1 and #2 to meet in the finals. It was setup so that if the 2 best teams in the state come from the same region they could play for the state championship. Get over having to travel 60 miles, then try to get over Camden cleaning your clock in the dome. Chew on that!

Whoever that Scarborough guy is, I would bet he was drunk when he wrote that or completely ignorant. As a Walton alum, I would ask you not to judge all Cobb folks by his ridiculous comments. Good luck to all the Gwinnett teams next week. From what I read, Starr’s Mill is having to add a BUNCH of seats to handle the Brookwood invasion on Friday. GHSA did the right thing moving the Dacula / Camden game to Saturday. That is a BRUTAL drive, esp coming through Atlanta on a Friday. Hope the folks down south will be good hosts.
