Gwinnett vs. Gwinnett
The Atlanta Journal-Constitution

Blogging about football in the Big G.
I didn’t realize how rare Gwinnett vs. Gwinnett playoff football was until my colleague Buddy Pinkston told me about research he did on the Georgia High School Football Historians Association Web site.
Buddy found that Gwinnett schools have played each other in the biggest classification just twice. Brookwood beat Parkview in the 1996 quarterfinals, and Parkview returned the favor in the 2002 championship game.
We’re about to double that.
So how do you think these games will shake out?
Berkmar at Dacula
Central Gwinnett at Collins Hill
North Gwinnett at Parkview
Norcross at Brookwood

The Bulldogs will rise to the occasion this weekend and everyone will be able to know that we are for real. Red and Orange dont mix well so I hope the goal post are secure in the Jungle. Cause they are coming down with a sea of RED. Suwannee Ga in tha house!!!

I think Brookwood, Parkview, Central, and Dacula move on this weekend. With Central vs. Collins Hill being the best game.

it’s a shame that half of gwinnett’s playoff teams will be eliminated after the first round…but i see brookwood, north, dacula and central moving on.

I agree, it is weird to see Gwinnett playing Gwinnett in the post season. But the cream rises to the top, and Brookwood and Dacula breeze on through.
Two excellent match-ups loom in the other games. It’ll be mano y mano as Beau takes on the Rock; whichever back has the better game will win. I like Central to eke out a close fought victory.
North is great one week, and maddeningly inconsistant the next. Same could be said for Parkview. I like the Bulldogs to pull off the aerial upset.

I still like this format better than the old one in the old AAAA. That was back when you only had one team from each region make the final 8. The first two rounds were all region games with the second round being a true region championship. Brookwood had a 4 year stretch in the early 90’s where they played Central Gwinnett 8 times in 4 years. 4 in the regular season and 4 in the playoffs. The loser in the playoff games was usually better than half the teams left in the playoffs. Once they changed the format, the Gwinnett teams started making deaper runs into the playoffs.

Central at Collins Hill - Central will simply be too much for Collins Hill. The Knights’ offense is explosive and their defense greedy. Those factors combined will be too much so for the Eagles to overcome. The Rock is for real, but Beau knows. Central by 14.
North at Parkview - Are you kidding? North is a good team, but the Bulldogs way outclassed, plus Parkview has something to prove after stumbling a couplr of times this season. I’m not the biggest Parkview fan, but facts are facts. Panthers in a walk, say by 21.
Berkmar at Dacula - Wow. This could be the best game of the night. Berkmar is sky-high this year, but has been manhandled a bit toward the end of the season. Dacula is on a roll, but finished strong last year, too, only to get bumped off in the first round. It won’t happen again. The Falcons are that much better than toe ‘04 squad, have the region title to prove it and are hungry. Never mess with a half-starved bird of prey. Love ya, Patriots, but you’ll be taking inventory come Monday. Falcons by 10.

Look out for Norcross, they are going to make it a close game. Brookwood will pull it out, but the last time these teams met, Norcross took the win. Dacula Blows out Berkmar. Parkview wins in overtime against North, and Central beats Collins Hill by a touchdown

Playing three playoff teams and then the tough region schedule has its advantages. Black Knights gallop past Collins Hill. Coach Warren makes his 2nd run for the dome with another surprise team. Brookwood, Parkview, and Central in romps. A narrow Dacula victory salvages Region 7-AAAAA from a sweep.

Collins Hill is a very young team that has improved much during the year. They are ready to prove how much this is true. Collins hill will beat Central by a nose.

Enough already…..
Parkview nor Dacula will make through round 2. Dacula definetly will not make it through Camden…as for those other schools other than Brookwood it’s just wishful thinking….

With the exception of Brookwood, Region 8 has been very unimpressive this year. Most of the teams, including Parkview, appear to be pretty thin, depth wise. Norcross will be the only loser from Region 7. They’ll give Brookwood a good game though.

I’d like to see how Brookwood adapt to having to travel 6 or 7 hours outside of their environment to have to play during the playoffs, again it will not happen this year. They will face Camden, but it will be in the Dome. It makes me wonder is it designed that way for a specific reason. Why can’t the team with the best record or standing in the state have home field advantage, they earned it, wouldn’t you think. I don’t think playing in the Ga. Dome is neutral or fair to the teams that has to come from the south. Why not Macon, or someplace in the middle of the state. Or is that we wouldn’t won’t the Brookwood’s or the Parkview’s of the state to be a little tired and out of their safe zones, if you will. Lowndes and Camden succeeded the last two years. Do Parkview and Brookwood have the programs for such a task outside Atlanta. If so, let’s get it on. Feel me….

If Brookwood beats Camden, they will have to travel down to Valdosta to play Lowndes (if they win their bracket.)
Brookwood won their only state championship against Valdosta, in Valdosta, in 1996.
Don’t say that Brookwood doesn’t have to, or can’t, play away from home.

Berkmar at Dacula: I see this as an easy win for Dacula and they advance to the next round. Central Gwinnett at Collins Hill will be a hard fought battle, but Central will be to much for CH to handle, even though they will have home field advantage. North Gwinnett at Parkview will be interesting to say the least. If North can get it’s high flying offense cranked and continue to get defensive plays from their play makers like Cameron Demps, they will have a shot to pull it out and proceed to the next level. Norcross at Brookwood is pretty much a given Brookwood win. Norcross beat Parkview early in the season, but simply can not outlast Brookwood’s power punches.

Count on Norcross trying Brookwood. Brookwood will be on top though.
Dacula will breeze through Berkmar. Count on A Brookwood vs. Camden Co or Brookwood vs. Dacula.
Central vs. Collins Hill will be a close game. N. Gwinnett could upset Parkview but count on a Parkview win.

Hey Tipp Smooth, get real. Do you really think the teams from the south are not thrilled by the notion of playing in the Ga dome? Come on, no one wants to relinquish a once in a lifetime opportunity such as that! The travel time is a non-factor when the focus is on the excitement and “thrill” of playing in the dome!

Dacula is well over due to get past the dreaded Quarterfinal curse. I hope this is the year. Go Falcons.

What ever happened to Timmy Smith from Central Gwinnett?

Timmy threw his life away. He could have been a dominant college player and a starter in the NFL… but he decided that drugs and a gang life were a better future.
Apparantly he plays in an adult rec league now.

You should do some more research. Until about 1999 or 2000, Gwinnett teams played each other in the first round of the playoffs every year.

I have to admit that I love that if Brookwood plays as well they have been playing then they’ll be in the Dome. I have to commend the Camden and Lowndes fans for making the long road trips. Even though the Dome is a great venue, it’s not truly fair (but I’m not complaining). I guess a somewhat a more fair location would be somewhere near Macon, but since I reside in the Atlanta metro area, I’m not familiar what venues near Macon could support the crowds. The playoffs just always seem very odd. I had once even heard that if Brookwood were to play Lowndes in the Championship that it could possibly held at Parkview’s Jungle. Crazy I know! But, again, even being a Brookwood fan, I have to give credit to Camden, Lowndes, and other schools with fans that make the long treks.

Good comment by larry. He is right they were called “Region” finals or as others might refer to it as first round of playoffs. Being a Dacula alumist and former player it is amazing to see the day that Dacula plays Brookwood and other big gwinnett schools but the other thing is how many more schools will gwinnett add? Enough is enough.

This Gwinnett vs Gwinnett and Cobb vs. Cobb thing will continue, more than it should, because the GHSA clings to this ridiculous North vs South format (regions 1-4 grouped as the “south” and 5-8 as the “north)
They should put AAAAA and AAAA on a 7 year cycle where each region would face all of the other 7 over a 7 year period — Why should Regions 2-AAAAA and 4-AAAAA, which are just as north as 5-8 compared to 1 & 3, have to do all that travel?
And why should they never be matched up against Cobb and Gwinnett in the first rounds?
GHSA would tell you North and South is because of the travelm but that argument doesn’t fly in this era, particularly in the top heavy AAAAA

KCB,
Let me drop some knowledge on ya, just ask Newnan about that long drive and then having to deal with Camden. The results 50 - 0. Every team that made the road trip from the ATL area to Camden returned to the ATL with a loss during the playoffs. Last year Stepenson, Starr’s Mills, Cherokee, this year first victim was Newnan. If traveling 6 hours don’t make a difference just ask some of those schools. Seems to me every time Camden meet Parkview or Brookwood it’s in the ALT area, let’s see what happens down south for a change. It won’t happen to Brookwood, but it will to Dacula, next on Camden dining list is the Wildcats of Valdosta. Feel me….We bring the Pain….

Camden the best playoff show in Georgia, will be coming to your area soon after we take of some business at the Den. We will arrive like a thief in the night, and snatch your playoff hopes and run at a title away from you. Do not fret, We be comin, We be comin.

KCB,
Let me set the record straight. What I meant by it won’t happen to Brookwood, is that, they will play Camden in the dome as usual. Come south and have a long miserable ride back home. Head in hand type of ride.

We need to why you have not said anything about the Mitchell-Baker eagles basketball since we have won all those CHAMPIONSHIPS. Is it all about the ATL AREA.

Uly,
Right now, we are talking about the Big Dogs, just stay on the porch. I know where Mitchell-Baker is, it’s near Albany. This thing with Camden is much bigger than Mitchell-Baker. See, Camden is in this thing to win it in class AAAAA. Once you get a taste of victory it’s contagious. Camden will ride or die. Bleed Blue Baby, bleed blue.
