Smith should make Broncos’ season wild

  1. What might turn Brookwood football coach Mark Crews’ face red this season?|

Well, the sight of the athletics director — “Humorless Dave” Hunter — doing the “Electric Slide” as the Broncos’ marvelous band blasts one of its jazzy tunes would do it.

Or catching a peek at Meadowcreek’s halftime extravaganza, particularly when Jimmie McKinley’s ensemble breaks out some BeyoncŽ and the Blue Diamonds dancers do their thing. That might cause a blush.

Seriously, though, Brookwood’s vaunted between-the-tackles running game notched an insane upgrade with the addition of Cameron Smith, late of Meadowcreek and now one of the most sought-after rushers around. And with elusive, strong-armed David Pitman at QB, what’s a tradition-minded coach to do?

One may imagine Crews’ chagrin if, say, Pitman were to audible into a pass-play on third-and-one. Wonder still at what a glorious outburst a resulting long TD pass, or Mike Vick-like scramble, would bring?

New day at Brookwood. Crews — and Bronco backers — are in for one wild ride. It should be well worth the drama, though.

  1. Since there really isn’t an offseason anymore, not even for high school football players, who made the biggest strides since last fall?|

Parkview two-way lineman Greg Billinger, who actually started making waves during the Panthers’ playoff run to the Class AAAAA championship match, has raised his game — and recruiting stock.

Filling out at 6-3, 260 pounds, Billinger was a darling of Division-I suitors while on the camp circuit. A defensive tackle last season, he also has come upon a new position — defensive end — that better suits his next-level skills.

Billinger has accepted Georgia’s offer.

Also gaining renewed appreciation from college eyeballers were Norcross fullback Fred Munzenmaier, Buford quarterback Justin Roper and his teammate, lineman Steven Singleton.

Count on others to perhaps become this season’s Antonio Forbes and go from unknown to blue chip. One to watch is Grayson DE Conrad Obi.

  1. Jeff Francoeur does not get enough love from you guys. What’s it going to take to get more on Gwinnett’s Most Favorite Son?|

Sorry, like so many, we have been blinded by his torrid MLB start since being called up to the Braves. Who could have thunk it?

Far be it from me to toot my own horn, but … actually, I did.

In January, I predicted, “Francoeur fills lone known hole in his game — patience at the plate — and garners spot on Braves’ postseason roster.”

And in March: “The fact Mr. Gwinnett appeared chagrined over not making the big team points more to his enduring competitiveness than apparent cockiness… . Jeff would prefer his talents do his talking, and trust us, it will.”
