How assertive should Obama be before Jan. 20?

Barack Obama won’t be inaugurated until Jan. 20, 2009. President George Bush’s approval ratings of 20 percent are the lowest ever recorded for a president. The nation is fighting wars in two countries and a jittery world worries about financial and economic meltdown.

So what should Obama do now as president-elect? Should Obama stick to protocol, defer to the sitting president for the next two and a half months, while going about the business of interviewing and selecting appointees. Or do these times call for extraordinary actions — a president-elect stepping out front, making pronouncements on the issues of the day and pushing an agenda on financial and foreign fronts?

Of course he should stick to protocol. He’s not president YET!!!!! Last I looked,January 20 was inauguration day. He’ll be president soon enough….don’t need to change the rules for the messiah, yet. By the way, the look captured on BO’s face on the front page of the web edition was priceless.

Obama better have a clue and not touch Capital Gains rates unless he wants to erode the economy even further than the Bush Administration and democratic Congress has thus far. Hopefully, he will wait until the economy has recovered, before he lowers the boom on all Middle Class tax payers with higher taxes. He has been lying through his teeth about his inevitable tax plan to fund his welfare system.

The President elect better spend all the time he has preparing himself for the job he has persuded the majority of people he can do. While the libral media and all of his supporters would love to have Obama step up and make pronouncements and push his agendas, George Bush is STILL The President and will fulfill his constitutional responsibility right up till 12:00p, January 20th, 2009.

Red…

Don’t you think the liberal democrats were looking for blood? I think they were with the way they and the liberal media aligned to blame GWB for anything and everything. Not saying there shouldn’t have been some fault laid, this has been excessive. But, once the 94 election was over and the libs lost so roundly, they have been looking for a way to draw blood. I haven’t seen much bipartisanship coming from the other side of the aisle lately.

So, you can’t blame us too much if we’re not quite ready to reach across to the other side, yet.

Such awful comments. It will take extreme aggression starting today. The easy days are over. The next four year will require action on all Americans. Being that I’m 34 years all, those previous generations before us, in all colors has left a destructive cycle of debt that my generation and younger must deal with. So it’s time to roll up our sleeves and work extremely hard.

The Dems need to keep in mind that while Barack Obama won an electoral college landslide that their victory based on popular vote was nothing like a landslide. Don’t forget that almost 50% of the people voted for John McCain - so take the opportunity to bring people together and stop the divisiveness we’ve experienced to much during the last several years.

In an election where the Republican president has the lowest approval ratings EVER, we are fighting two unpopular wars, the economy is in the tank and (until recently) gas prices were an issue - the Democratic candidate should have run away with this election. You have to ask - why didn’t he? The reason is because not all of his policies are popular - so please don’t rush to make costly changes that will be very hard to undo.

Take your time and make sure you do this right.

I’m afraid we have allowed ourselves to elect someone that will destroy what our fore fathers fought and worked fore. People have elected not by principal of what a canidate stood for but people voted according to skin color, a large number of people donot even know the differences between the two canidates. I pray Obama will surround his self with quaified people and we get thru the next four years .

You have stinkin’ thinkin’ and no heart. And the change that has been echoed in President-Elect Obama’s campaign is the change that first starts within ourselves.

Senator McCain’s concession speech was heart felt and moving. I am just sad that I had a chance to see these side of him after defeat as oppose to when he ran his presidential campaign.

Obama has a pretty clear-cut mandate, but it’s important to look at what that mandate’s for: Voters trust him to make even-handed but pro-active steps on this economic crisis, to take steps towards insuring more people (especially children), to pursue a progressive agenda on education while empowering state and local boards to better deal with aggressive teachers’ unions (sorry, teachers! I’m just saying what I think got him elected), “rebuild national infrastructure” — whatever that means, renew international commitments, step it up in Afghanistan, liberalize relations with Iran in the same way that Bush, on his hands and knees, has had to concede in the North Korea case, and articulate a withdrawal plan that includes accountability in Iraq (his grand strategy), while generally going by the on-the-ground strategic recommendations of someone like Petreaus. Oh yeah, and give really inspiring speeches.

The tricky thing is, to get all of that passed, he’s going to have do some things the public would probably prefer he’d not; to put it another way, he’s going to have to take steps to fill that mandate that would lose him votes if he ran talking about them: First of all, forget taxes — there’s a consensus that the deficit’s too high. He’s going to have to raise the federal deficit fairly significantly to get the economy back on track, and to coordinate with international economic recover efforts. Along the same track, he’s going to have to pass future bailout bills if it’s indicated they’re needed. That’s really not so bad, as you saw a vituperative public at first, but then a much more equivocated one later. Chambliss, after all, wasn’t recalled. The other big fight with the public is going to be the environment. Yeah, the public in theory supports doing something about global warming. But it’s not going to take much of a raise in energy prices (to be fair, McCain had a very similar carbon tax initiative) for them to lose their interest. Especially in a recession. It’s a double-bind: Pass environmental legislation early on to move it under the radar before elections, but then risk economic growth, or pass it in a few years, after we recover a bit, and watch legislative majorities diminish, or a tough re-election bid. Obama says he’ll give Congress 18 months. He’s letting them, in effect, decide their own mid-term fates. Expect Republicans to see the opportunity in delaying action until 6 months before the next vote.

In any case, Obama has no mandate, and it would do him questionable political good, to pass things like the “Fairness Doctrine,” or dip into the cultural battles of the 80s and 90s (abortion, gay marriage, affirmative action). I mean, he probably won’t lose a lot of votes directly on those issues, so he should push what is right, with the caveat that they’ll all somewhat damage his bipartisan promise, and risk future credibility for his policies.

The last group is things people really aren’t going to vote on, so he can do whatever he thinks is right. You hear a lot of passionate people talk about the risk of an activist court. Well, as long as you appoint someone who’s credible on jurisprudence, they can be as activist as you want. Bush did not lose votes or support on Roberts or Alito, as Clinton did not on Ginsburg. Bush did lose support on Harriet Meirs, Ashcroft, and Gonzalez. If Obama wants to expand reproductive rights, I’d forget about all that stuff he told the radio show that got played back like he’s a socialist, and stick that goal in the courts. It’s a good way not to get any more blame on the issue than you already do. The union card-vote thing is probably also something voters will, in the end, be ambivalent about.

My main point: Obama was very careful in describing bipartisanship as not necessarily giving up your mandate to lead, but in drawing people across the aisle in on it. The first set of things are what he’s won over a lot of Republicans on (not the Jim Wooten types, but the ones looking for re-election in, I dunno, Ohio, or Pennsylvania if there are any left). If he keeps those policies reasonable, and doesn’t complicate the political situation, he can get a lot done. The real test of Obama commitment to bipartisanship is how he treats issues like the Fairness Doctrine and the union card vote thing that he probably could get away with, but would tick of Republican elected officials.

(My disclosure: I’m a Democrat, and I support almost every Democratic Party platform at the national level, or something more aggressive or liberal, regardless of what I’m saying Obama should or should not do. So don’t be all like, “you don’t support affirmative action? you don’t support teachers’ unions?”)

I keep thinking about that foolish woman at the Obama rally who said that with a Barack Obama presidency she “wouldn’t have to worry about putting gas in her car and wouldn’t have to worry about paying her mortgage.” There are so many like her – people who sincerely believe that an Obama presidency is going to be a substitute for work. Give these people about six months and they’re going to be wondering what happened … where their gravy train went … why they’re still having to work for a living.

The big question for me today is whether or not freedom, economic liberty and self-sufficiency can make a comeback in America. Right now it seems that a dismaying number of Americans think that they are owed a living; that it is the government’s job to guarantee their economic security. Can we ever turn that around and return to a time when people accept the responsibility for their own lives and eschew the idea of using government as a tool of legalized plunder?

WHAT WE HAVE TO LOOK FORWARD TO

The end of the secret ballot in union elections A return of the Fairness Doctrine A tax code punishing the wealthy, businesses, entrepreneurs, achievers More federal government in government schools Universal healthcare Cap-and-trade policies on coal (no nuclear power, no drilling) Supreme Court justices who favor a vaporous idea of “fairness” over the Constitution The security of our nation and our allies (particularly Israel)

Obama does not have to push anything. Once he is in office the media will quit running stories on the homeless and uninsured. When unemployment hits 8% the story will be that 8% is really good and all the people now have good jobs and CEO’s now make minimum wage.

Obama won this election big time and should immediately start making big changes. He needs first to get all these white racists out of the government in Washington D.C. We’re still trying to do that in Atlanta. Then, he needs to end that stupid war in Iraq and take all that money and invest it in inner city projects, where it is needed and programs for homeless and low income. He’s got the power and needs to use it!!!

I would like Obama to start this week by calling in Nancy Pelosi and Harry Reid and saying, “You guys suck; you’re fired.” He is going to need more effective, less partisan leaders in Congress to push through his agenda, and those two ain’t it. One thing Obama has going for him is a big of a swagger; Reagan had it, Kennedy had it, the great ones have it. He needs to cash in on his popularity right away and enforce his will on those in Washington from both parties who will drag their feet. Remember, Carter and Clinton had more trouble with their own party after taking office, and with the Democrats in charge of Congress, that could happen to Obama as well if he doesn’t get in their faces.

This is a time for people to be coming together, not tearing apart. The question was asked “how assertive should Obama be”. The answer is, as assertive as the reigning president allows him to be. Obama has not stated that he has any intention of jumping into the president slot today or tomorrow. Therefore the assumption should not be that his plan is anything other than what is allowed by law. It is overwhelmingly obvious that some are not be happy with the election results. But, it is the result of many people feeling that he is qualified that has gotten him to this point. Not just black people, or minorities, but a large percentage of all people, Americans looking for a brighter future for themselves and their families.

I think Pres. Obama has to be very assertive; that doesn’t mean partisan, but decisive in addressing the financial crisis. The REAL unemployment and industrial productivity numbers will finally be released to the public, and I think the US will really see how big a hole we’re in.

Judging by the number of “dead enders” in the GA electorate who still cling to visions of the bizarro universe we almost entered under McCain/Palin, I think Pres.
