Obama answered his critics
The Atlanta Journal-Constitution
It was an audacious plan, but he pulled it off. Even though expectations were dizzyingly high, Barack Obama met them.
Critics said he tends to be too vague, so he gave details.
Critics said he tends to be too lofty and cerebral, but he connected with plainspoken rhetoric.
Critics said he is a wimp who couldn’t throw a punch, but McCain must have felt a couple of those left hooks.
Game on!

I remain open to Obama’s message. I find his approach to alternative energy, inclusiveness and global warming very appealing; however, I not willing to fully embrace just yet. I’m still trying to reconcile his constant call for a new post-partisanship kind of politics— in lieu of the fact that he gave a TYPICAL convention speech by throwing in Cynthia’s words “left hooks.” I guess I have a different definition—then again, I’m an independent that loathes party orthodoxy—Republican or Democratic.

Wow, Cynthia isn’t even trying to hide her partisan leanings.
He didn’t answer all of his critics. His plans to strip Americans of financial liberty, his extremist views favoring the destruction of free market economic policy, his naive views on foreign relations…
Barack had his night, and it was a good one for America. I’m certainly not interested in tipping my hat to Obama, but it is a landmark evening for the country. Now, let’s move on and elect someone who believes in personal responsibility, who doesn’t bow to international disparaging, and who cherishes the citizen autonomy which has built America.
Quite obviously, that individual is John McCain.

Good speech IMO…I’m not thrilled by his ‘brothers keeper’ slant but I am impressed by his ackowledgement of personal responsibility in regard to energy. I’m not going to vote for him but I do hope he beats McCain.

Details?? Obama’s details were fantasy!
10 years to Middle East Independence
150 billion to alternative energy research that will create millions of “well paid” jobs
More money for a failed education system
Lower premiums from a heavier regulated health care system, and a Congressional plan for all those who have none.
And, oh yeah, a tax cut for 95% of Americans. Yeah, sure..
But what Obama didn’t say speaks volumes about his understanding of the change America really needs. Where was his plans to balance the budget, address spending and the national debt, address the looming Social Security and the Medicaid crisis’, a nuclear armed Iran or 20 million illegal aliens???? These are the real issues that face us today…, and a lot of liberal cliches in attack formation aren’t going to change that reality.

Great speech. The experience argument against him is bogus. Experience doing what? Cheney and Rumsfeld had tons of experience, advised Bush, and look at the mess we’re in. More than 4,000 Americans lost in the misguided Iraq war and Osama Bin Ladin is still on the loose. Obama’s intelligence, ability to listen and process information, and his exceptional ability to motivate people is the primary quality needed, and he has it in spades over the current administration or McCain. This is leadership, guys. And slightly off topic: to the Republicans’ criticism of the stagecraft at the Democratic convention, I have two words: Mission Accomplished!

Is was driven home again during the video introducing Senator Obama Friday evening that he really isn’t African-American or Black as so many people like to think. His mother was white and his grandparents who raised him were both white. So, in my humble opinion, if someone doesn’t vote for him because he is African-American or Black, they are making a mistake. The man is surely as white as John McCain or Joe Biden or Hillary Clinton. So, enough already with this first Black presidential nominee crap. Who cares about race as long as he can lead this country out of the depths of despair we are currently in.

It is a historic night and fitting that it comes on the anniversary of Dr. King’s historic speech.
He is great with a tele-prompter. Dr. King never needed one, but Reagan used notes and a prompter as well to be a master communicator.
Nothing he said from his script will get me to vote for him not because of his race. Because he is wrong with his policies. He wants to give 95% of American with a paycheck a tax break. Not possible. Already 50% pay 97% of the taxes while 45% pay nothing and some of those get that ridiculous earned income tax credit.
He has no experience or real accomplishments. No legislation that he has sponsored or co-sponsored. No experience in governing a state or running a business. He has been a community activist (whatever that is), a slick lawyer and a legislator with no record.
I do not agree with McCain on immigration, but he has accomplishments. He is also a hero. No one can deny that. He does not have to say ” I Love my Country” as MyBelle did the other night with such a phony ring of credibility.
It is a night to remember, but he is not a candidate to elect. This year it is time to vote for McCain who is not Bush no matter what Bactrack and Joe Bitem say.
No worries about Iran, it is a little country that poses no threat to us. No worries about Osama as he will invade Pakistan to find him - maybe, maybe not. Depends on which way the wind is blowing and poll numbers are going.
Queen Nancy represents an over-inflated idiot who is “saving the planet” while gas goes up and everything else goes up. I remember that they promised to bring gas prices down now the price of everything is higher with Congress in recess without voting to Drill Here and Drill Now as evidence by the ground swell of American opinion in favor of this policy.
Obamenomics will tax and spend us into a depression. The Republicans will borrow and spend. Not a good choice with either. However, when a crisis happens, I do not want an indecisive (jimmy carter clone) commander. I want a person of integrity, service to country and dedication to our nation answering the phone. Backtrack did not know how to answer questions at Saddleback because he makes it up on the fly. Without a prompter, he is very uncertain. Not the one to have in charge.
As to the idea, that he deflected his lack of experience with this speech and the selection of Bitem, the answer is NO HE DID NOT. Bitem is a blowhard. No experience, radical ideas, associations with hatred religious leaders and marxists make him unqualified to hold the office.
McCain in 08.

All I hear is rhetoric and lame promises. Most of congress make over $250,000 per year and do you think they will vote to tax themselves? What is Obama’s military record? Castro made a lot of promises in 1959 for change in Cuba and the people bought into his charisma and look where it got them. Hitler was very charismatic also. I see lots of big brother if we elect Robin Hood Obama. Be careful of what you ask for, you just might get it.

Change Change Change,
All I hear though out of Obama is him changing his mind when a different poll comes out showing popularity changed for something he once supported and then he’ll go to the other extreme. People have to realize that ‘no he didn’t vote for the Iraqi war’ because he wasn’t even in politics when the Iraqi war started. Doesn’t that scare you knowing that this guy wanting to run our country on NO experience in anything. A lawyer he is? It shows that his entire legal background only shows 14 cases that he even tried and look at his family members over in Kenya, living and huts we nearly nothing to live on and he won’t help them as he lives in a million $ plus home and he’s going to help us. Give me a break people this guy is wanting headlines along with his wife. Why couldn’t we have gotten our first African American in office that truely deserves being elected. Like Andrew Young or John Lewis, Colin Powell, a African American that would know how to run this country and not put on a show just like this convention was. Bless us all if he gets in office.

He’s just the typical politician….offering empty promises just to get the power he is so greedy for. With McCain, you, at least, have many years of voting records you can refer to. You can see he is a maverick and has angered Republicans many times by crossing party lines to endorse what he believes in. With Obama’s whopping 143 days (yeah, this guy is seasoned and ready to lead this country!!) as a US Senator, you can review his voting records and never has he crossed party lines.

Obama answered his critics????!!!!!!
HUH??????????????????!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!
I’ve not heard why Obama attended a racist church for over 20 years and didn’t denounce its pastor, Jeremiah Wright until it was brought up by the non-mainstream press.
I’ve not heard why Obama calls a non-repentant terrorist, William Ayers of the “Weatherman” a friend, made speeches with him and sat on boards together.
I’ve not heard why Obama got a sweetheart deal on his Chicago mansion (paying $300k less than its value) from convicted real estate developer Tony Rezko, who left taxpayers holding the bag and a boarded-up low housing development in Chicago.
I’ve not heard why Obama says he’s for the poor when his own half brother lives in poverty (living on less than a dollar a day) and he won’t even help him.
I’ve not heard why Obama thinks people in Pennsylvania are racists and Bible-toting fanatics.
I’ve not heard why Obama thinks Bejing, China’s infrastructure is vastly superior to ours and is a model to us - when it was built on slave labor, environmentally destructive practices and displaced thousands of (mostly elderly) Chinese without any compensation or alternative housing.
Those are just a few questions that Obama needs to answer (but won’t since the mainstream press will continue to protect and coddle their anointed selection for the Office).

McSame, you say?
The issues on which McCain and Bush differ are legion:
• McCain fought for campaign finance reform — McCain-Feingold — that Bush fought and ultimately signed because he had no choice.
• McCain led the battle to restrict interrogation techniques of terror suspects and to ban torture.
• McCain went with Sen. Joe Lieberman (I-Conn.) on a tough measure to curb climate change, something Bush denies is going on.
• McCain opposed the Bush tax cuts when they passed.
• McCain urged the Iraq surge, a posture Bush rejected for years before conceding its wisdom.
• McCain favors FDA regulation of tobacco and sponsored legislation to that effect, a position all but a handful of Republican Senators oppose.
• McCain’s energy bill, also with Lieberman, is a virtual blueprint for energy independence and development of alternate sources.
• After the Enron scandal, McCain introduced sweeping reforms in corporate governance and legislation to guarantee pensions and prohibit golden parachutes for executives. Bush opposed McCain’s changes and the watered-down Sarbanes-Oxley bill eventuated.
• McCain has been harshly critical of congressional overspending, particularly of budgetary earmarks, a position Bush only lately adopted (after the Democrats took over Congress).

Obama said, “John McCain has voted with George Bush ninety percent of the time. “
1 - Bush doesn’t ‘vote’, he is an executive, not a legislator. Bush signs or vetoes. And he can only sign when a bill passes the democratic senate (chances are then, that Obama voted on it also). 2 - Many, many of the legislative pieces that do get through to Bush are touchy / feely bills that everyone votes on. So, I guess, Obama votes with Bush too. Example…stem cell research act that McCain and Obama voted for…oh, wait, Bush vetoed, so I guess he didn’t ‘vote’ with Bush…nevermind.By Shawny

Now, here is THE FUNDAMENTAL difference between libs and conservatives that irrates me to no end every time I hear it mentioned…Obama, talking about poor people, said, “Born into poverty? Pull yourself up by your own bootstraps - even if you don’t have boots. You’re on your own.” in reference to ‘ownership society’ principles of conservatives.
No, it is not the governments responsibility to care for the economic well being of its citizens. In the days before the Great Depression, not only was ‘every man for himself’, but that is how everyONE wanted it. They did not want the govt in their lives at all. Just show up if we need protecting from foreign invaders. Along comes social security, now too many are depending on it and other social programs instead of depending on themselves. Govt isn’t a charity organization.
Not compassionate enough? A person living below poverty can get a high school education for free. Many jobs are available to high school graduates. This country needs flight attendants, waitresses, landscaping foremen, assembly line workers, etc. all of which are attainable by people born into poverty WITHOUT the aid of govt.

I was awed, inspired and heartened by Obama’s speech last night. He wants to develop a sound energy policy and move us toward alternative fuels and energy independence, he wants to close tax loopholes to make it less profitable for corporations to take jobs out of America, he wants to make sure that no American goes without health insurance, he wants to give tax relief to the middle class, he denounced the use of torture and wants to restore civil liberties undermined by the Bush administration, he wants to make it more possible for those who want a college education to get one, he pledged to use diplomacy over force and regain the trust and cooperation of our allies, he promises to get us out of Iraq. Can he do all this? Well, he can try, and that’s the main thing. Because nothing can be done without first being attempted. And I don’t hear McCain and the Republicans setting these goals. To the contrary, they try to claim everything is fine as is. I won’t vote for complacency.

Obama said, “Unlike John McCain, I will stop giving tax breaks to corporations that ship jobs overseas”.
Democrats raise the minimum wage. Now it is even more profitable to ship jobs overseas. Democrats want to up corporate taxes (US operations only, since they can’t tax their foreign operations), thus, it becomes more profitable to operate overseas.
In Bush’s first term, taxes on dividends were reduced, and what happened? People began investing in dividend paying stocks by the droves, which INCREASED the govt take overall.
How about legislating so that it is more profitable to operate in the US and companies will do so.

Yep, he sure answered all of my criticisms with his super-duper speech!
I used to think I would vote for McCain, but now that Obama has “answered his critics”, I will vote for him.
Was anyone surprised that Tucker and Bookman loved Obama’s speech? Will anyone be surprised next week to find that Tucker and Bookman didn’t like McCain’s speech?
Partisan pundits like Tucker and Bookman are so boring and predictable. It’s like listening to Hannity.

Obama said, “I will set a clear goal as President: in ten years, we will finally end our dependence on oil from the Middle East.”
Nice. I hope that happens, but we all know it won’t. That is too short of a time frame to be realistic. And guess what, it is just outside of his potential 2 terms, so that if it doesn’t happen in 10 years, then those last 2 years must be someone elses fault for why it didn’t happen. nice.

Obama said, “we will make sure you can afford a college education.”
It is not everyone’s right to go to college. Nor is it the gov’ts responsibility to ensure that it is avaialble. First of all, if it became that accessible, then who is going to do the jobs that don’t require a college education. The labor pool would dry up worse than it is today, wages would escalate, and costs would soar.

I think at this point, if someone choose John McCain it has to be for three reasons. First, you are extremely wealthy. Second, you are a partisan and will support a party blindly. Lastly, you will not vote for Obama based on race. People keep saying he is not experience, they dont know enough about him, is all an excuse and they dont have the courage to come out and say they are not comfortable voting for a black candidate. Obama is clearly more intelligent, charismatic, intuitive, than John MCcain. As for experience, i am willing to choose someone with a clear vision for the future instead of someone who will deliver more of the same Bush policies.

This is typical ignorant and blind partisanship. The notion that anyone who doesn’t support your candidate is morally or intellectually defective is the height of self-delusion. You really think that half of the country is rich, stupid or racist? I feel sad for you and your twisted view of “reality”.
I plan to vote for McCain and none of the above conditions are true. I’m not rich. I voted for Clinton twice. I am choosing to raise my children in a neighborhood in which white folks are the minority. I think that Obama would be a decent President and I would support him if he wins. I think that most of Obama’s supporters are good people who have different policy views and world outlooks than mine.

Let’s hear some more biased reporting. Only a complete fool would have believed the nonsense Obama was spewing last night. We will be off our dependence on foreign oil within 10 years. Only an idiot would think that. He will cut taxes for 95% of Americans. When has a democrat actually cut taxes? It’s a fact that the dems will let the Bush tax cuts expire in 2010 hereby raising all our taxes. The spectacle I saw last night reminded me of a documentary I saw once. The Guyana Tragedy. I saw people so blinded and fooled by someone they wouldn’t care if Obama committed some sort of heinous crime right in front of them. They still would worship him. This man is as mysterious as Austin Powers and is just as make believe. How could we possibly elect someone with ties to terrorists? Someone who’s taken money from convicted criminals such as Tony Rezco. Someone who sat in a raciest church for twenty years. At least John McCain and his profile are laid out for all to see….

I believe McCain’s Cross in the dirt prison story.
Here’s why:
Anne Frank’s autobio relates a story about how she first learned about words representing real things in the world at a pump outside her house with her teacher pumping wah wah and Anne Franks feeling the wah wah on her hands and the teacher signing the letters to the word wah wah. When told that her story was awfully similar to Helen Kellers, Anne Frank turned her parents into the Nazis and became a spy for the Japanese, and today we know her as Whatsa Mata, Harry? (She needled Truman to death before nagasaki, where she was broadcasting her Rushannity like rants when the big one went off).

The party that has borrowed and spent America into financial oblivion — the party that has made our country beholden to the very nations that would like to see America crumble and break — does not deserve another four years.
It is time to STOP sending boatloads upon boatloads of oil money to the Middle East, and time to STOP borrowing money hand over fist from Asian nations.
The Republicans had eight years to work on these problems, but chose only to dig America’s hole deeper.

Obama is once again mis-leading the public. A capital gains tax (abbreviated: CGT) is a tax charged on capital gains, the profit realized on the sale of a non-inventory asset that was purchased at a lower price. The most common capital gains are realized from the sale of stocks, bonds, precious metals and property.
In the United States, individuals and corporations pay income tax on the net total of all their capital gains just as they do on other sorts of income, but the tax rate for individuals is lower on “long-term capital gains,” which are gains on assets that had been held for over one year before being sold. The tax rate on long-term gains was reduced in 2003 to 15%, or to 5% for individuals in the lowest two income tax brackets (See progressive tax). Short-term capital gains are taxed at a higher rate: the ordinary income tax rate. The reduced 15% tax rate on eligible dividends and capital gains, previously scheduled to expire in 2008, has been extended through 2010 as a result of the Tax Increase Prevention and Reconciliation Act signed into law by President Bush on May 17, 2006 (P.L. 109-222). In 2011 these reduced tax rates will “sunset,” or revert to the rates in effect before 2003, which were generally 20%.
IE companies pay income taxes on their capital gains so if you raise my income taxes so in reality, this guy is sharp but will causes taxes on small business to increase and small business operate and create over 70% of the jobs in the US.
If you want to create US jobs, reduce the personal and corporate tax rate, improve the educational system, reduce or elimate unions, get rid of corporate welfare programs lobbyist in Washington love.

It is strange to me that the people who seem to support Obama and his speeches and ideas are the peole who need to listen to them. Last night he talked about self relaiability and picking your own self up. His supporters are the same ones (as is he ) that support more and bigger government. His supporters are the ones on welfare, or are recieving earned income credits. What a joke some people do not pay taxes they get paid by the government for being a loser in life. That is a real good policy, reward laziness not prosperity. So you supporters of Obama need to decide are you actually going to work and listen to what your candidate said last night.(it may change in a week or two after some new polls come out) Or are you more inclined to continue to wait on the government to suckle on the government milk.

Hot chick, everyone is feeling the crunch of the economic situation, however believe it or not there are more important issues than money to some of us out here and that does not make us crazy. It just so happens that many repubs. are just more fiscally responsible than manyof the Obama faithful. Since you want it to be about money it would be in your interst to know that the man claiming to cut taxes for 95% has in the past voted over 90 times to raise taxes and he even supported and voted for a measure that would raise taxes for anyone making over 42,000. That is not matching up with his past record. Unless 95% of us make less than 42,000 sounds like someone is caught in a lie.

I agree…Obama answered his critics with every answer they could want…but they will still not be satisfied. I kind of agree that it was…audacious, but then he understands the ‘audacity of hope.” One of the comments above mentions that the problem will always be racial for some people, and the criticisms which have become ridiculous are just a cover for the racial problem that people feel guilty about and therefore cannot articulate it. Too bad. Let’s hope there are enough people to spare to vote for him in spite of those that will never admit to it.

Obama’s speech last night was masterfully written and convincingly delivered. But I ask did he ever say how? Because I am admittedly not good at math but the numbers do not add up. Words that swell with emotions, void of real substance often leave us hungry for real truth.I find it difficult to support a politician that speaks of “change” but has no record of having produced it before. It is utter foolishness to think that life does not begin with conception. Therefore, I could never support the Democratic party, or its presidential candidate that feels that life is a”punishment” out of the right circumstances. Most of us wouldn’t be here today if our parents felt that way. Then, where is the respect for God. The Giver of Life through Jesus Christ. It is impossible for me to believe that one who has no regard for the unborn, can respect, and represent the living with honesty. So, what is this election really about? Power, and the pursuit of money. Each has no boundary of racial considerations.

tCoach You are right the economy is just one part of the platform puzzle; of course there is education; health care; social security reform; the military; immigration issues; abortion issues; gay rights all of these issues were addressed by the candidate on last evening. Candidate Obama gave a brief outline on where he stood on all of these issues. As for the tax hike issue — the precentage of the hike is from the loopholes created by the “repubs” for large cooperations and upper income level wage earners. Tell me this tcoach how is it that a CEO of a cooperation can receive a 5 million dollar raise and the people who actually do the work and out there in the trenches barely recieve a 3% yearly raise. Why is it when a cooperation downsizes and employees are released they automatically loose their health care benefits? If they have a pre-existing illness the premimum for COBRA is more than they can afford. The the “repubs” tell them to go and get another job! “WHERE” Every corporation I know has a hiring Freeze! These are degreed people. Some of them can’t even get a Walmart job. I am glad that you made wise financial decisions that will return dividends to you (I did too); but what about your fellowman, your grandchildren — do you even care! You need to pray tcoach!

They will take his comments at face value and look no further into what he is saying. Example, BO said that he would “…eliminate capital gains taxes for the small businesses and start-ups..” Most of your democratic voters will applaude this until someone explains to them that small business and startups dont pay capital gains taxes, they pay income taxes. unfortunately these people are allowed to vote.

As if George Bush ever communicates to the degree that you have any idea what the F he’s talking about. It’s nice that we suddenly now have standards and expectations of competency from our presidential candidates but since when does a Bush speech contain any real content?
You either like George Bush or consider him an unbelievable failure. You either were impressed and inspired by Obama’s speech, which said everything Democrats have been trying to say for the last 8 years but better and more effectively, or you weren’t.
And please don’t say like him but you still don’t know what he stands for. The man wrote two books, READ THEM!
More than once during his speech I applauded and raised my hand in the air and I’m not ashamed to say I was by myself.
Obama. McCain. Take your pick. I hope it’s Obama but if it’s not, fine. Just don’t let people hear you say you’re still undecided.

I didn’t hear where he explained why he and the jerks in the DNC perverted the primary campaigns; refused to impeach or censure; supported retroactive FISA immunity; abandoned campaign and election reforms; rejected universal or single payer healthcare; supported the Class Action Fairness act; equivocate and deceived on deployment of troops; abandoned marriage rights, women’s control of their own bodies, LGBT issues; repeatedly supported the Patriot Act; fear and refusal to debate other candidates; adulation of the failures RWR and GHWB at the expense WJC and HRC; moving right of and orthogonal to progressive principles.

Isn’t it something. Regardless of whether or not I agree with them, commenters from all over the political spectrum continually demonstrate more analytical skills than the person paid to do it.

Andrew…unfortunately, this IS about race. It will ALWAYS be about race as long as there are different races. Many people (Democrats included) are NOT ready for a “black” president. (Actually, he is not black, but bi-racial.) He should be embracing his caucasian roots as strongly as he embraces his black roots.
This completely explains the stupidity of people.
There is ONLY ONE RACE! it is called the “Human Race”. People are made up of different ethnic backgrounds not races.

@ Andrew August 29, 2008 11:09 AM I’ve gone back over every comment, and see very, very few racist (though still objectionable) remarks — in fact, they swing both ways.
The tcoach comment (using redneck is racist too) is right on the money.
I am going to add that even a person who might be besieged with racist assaults becomes a racist when they make false accusations. That is, they are using racial differences rather than clear reasoning to make some kind of point (like your desperate one).
