Lewis remembers 45 years ago

One of the most sought-after figures at this convention has been Atlanta’s own John Lewis, congressman and revered civil rights hero, whose remarkable career connects the civil rights movement with last night’s awe-inspiring nomination of the first black presidential candidate from a major political party.

I saw Lewis in the lobby of the hotel just now, and he said, “I’ve cried so many tears over the last couple of days that I’m cried out. I gave an interview just now and I just lost it. It was at 1 p.m. exactly 45 years ago,” he said, when Lewis, a student civil rights leader, stood to give his speech at the March on Washington.

Later, on that steamy August day, Martin Luther King, Jr. gave his powerful “I Have a Dream” speech, one of the most awesome pieces of rhetoric in American history, right up there with the Gettysburg address. This is, indeed, a day to just savor and celebrate this remarkable “only in America” moment, to acknowledge the remarkable social and cultural transformation this country has accomplished in a short 45 years.

1) If the world had not been involved in slavery (including Europe) when our country was founded we would not have today’s problems.

2) If the Northern States had refused to sign the Constitution regarding slavery ……………..

3) If Yankee shipping interests had not continued in the slave trade after the importation of slaves was outlawed ………………

4) If “Reconstruction” had not happened the way it did ……………

5) If everyone would just follow the “Golden Rule” as provided in God’s Word …………….

Cynthia, you’re so disgustingly predictable.

Yes, MLK’s “I have a dream speech” is an awesome piece of rhetoric in American history. Your second choice of “awesome rhetoric”? Of course, the Gettysburg address.

Does Regan’s “tear down that wall” speech count? Kennedy’s “ask not what this country can do for you”? Roosevelt’s “day of infamy”?

Of course those aren’t on your list. Why? Because if something doesn’t relate to racism, it doesn’t matter to you. You attempt to make racism the center of every conversation that is ever held. And I, for one, am sick of it.

With each day that passes, your drain on the fabric of Atlanta is becoming painfully clearer.

Way to go kevin, You hit the nail on the head. Ms. Tucker,Cynthia McKinney and good ole Maxine Waters R.Ca. top the list of if it ain’t racist it ain’t right.Lets throw in the two poverty pimps Sharpton & Jackson and we got a stew to stir. And Michael (not Martin) King never wrote his so called famous speach I have A Dream, he stole it.

John Lewis can’t accept the 1960s are over. America has moved forward and he’s been left in the dust with Jesse Jackson, Al Sharpton, and Spike Lee.

His congressional district has had ZERO representation for over 20 years. Lewis has brought no dollars from the congressional pie in Washington to his district. He brokers multi-million deals for the King family; but creates no jobs for his district. Every year he makes an appearance at the Edmund Pettus Bridge, reinacting his 15 minutes of fames.

John Lewis : RETIRE !

Can’t you just smell the hate and venom spewing even from their post. God help these mean-spirited, hate-filled, people on this blog. It’s not about racism it’s about hate. But I always say you get what you breed. The truth as I speak it, they are the ones keeping this racist crap in play not people like Cynthia, Al Sharpton, or Maxine Waters.

John Lewis? He makes the school board of Clayton County look bright. The man is an idiot. On the day he was re-elected he stated that his main goal was to end the war in Iraq. The same week five young men died in his district, each classified as murder. Lewis is too ignorant to realize where his priorities shold be and the hoods and ghetto areas he represents are more dangerous than Iraq. All he can talk about is MLK this, MLK that. He is a disgrace to Georgia! Blacks need to live in the present and not the past and hope to hell they can stop voting anyone in office based on race and think out of the box, but I am afraid that’s far too much of a stretch for the average one.

Kevin….

Get over yourself. She did not say that those were the only two historic speeches in American History. But it would take a blind fool like you not to understand that those two speeches are relative to This historic nomination. Try letting go of the hatred and take this as it was presented, No hidden agendas, no code words, just acknowledment of history as it is played out before us.

Tiff, you couldn’t be more wrong. People like you, Cynthia, Al Sharpton, or Maxine Waters ARE what keep the racial issue alive. This election isn’t about race for most people. It’s about 2 awful candidates and picking the lesser of 2 evils. People like you and Cynthia disgust me.

Gimme a break! John Lewis is a talentless hack that’s been riding the coat-tails of fabricated, zionist media lionized “hero” Michael “MLK” King for 45 years! Like fellow shyster Jesse HiJackson, Lewis has been aboard the MLK gravy train for far too long (just like YOretta Scott King & her grifter kids). Mike King was a communist, subversive, philanderer who’s been elevated to god status by the Zionist media. Whites are constantly expect to bow at the “MLK alter” in reverence of that fraud & all his hangers-on. Lewis & that whole lot are scum!

Way to go Kevin and James! I can appreciate the words of Kennedy, Reagan, and Roosevelt as bastions of change. Why is it difficult for some to appreciate the words of Dr. King? Why is King’s birth name even mentioned? Surely if slave owners changed the names of slaves, a father can change his name and his son’s. Why is a distinction drawn between the words of celebrated whites and a celebrated black? Is the racism that you decry ensconced in your own words.

Mr. Lewis doesn’t know much about governance. But realistically, he CAN’T bring jobs to the district, nor should that be his job. We should stop looking to the government to solve our problems. They have done a lousy job, and yet, we are still talking about raising our taxes to send them EVEN MORE money. What they need to do is to stop spending so much money, to allow the states to do what they need. The reason the states can’t fix infrastructure, etc, is that people send 40% of their money to washington….then the state can maybe get 3% of income. It’s ludicrous, cause the feds have no idea what needs to be done locally, but they proclaim they do.

In any event, Mr. Lewis continuously reminds us that yes, he marched beside MLK, Jr. Which is great, and I am thankful for all that Mr. King and Mr. Lewis did for this country. BUT IT WAS 40 YEARS AGO. Which hardly makes Mr. Lewis a productive legislator.

Rep. Lewis might do well to stop reminiscing about Martin and sniveling for the cameras and, instead, promote some real dreams for his congressional district.

Something positive like encouraging marriage amoung the many single-parent families in his district. Maybe the BLACK CHURCH should mount a drive to ensure all African-Americans persue marriage. This action would surely bring many impoverished Atlanta families into the economic mainstream along with it’s attendant healthcare and decent housing. And, god-forbid, maybe we’d see the African-American community start voting for Republican candidates (no, that’s not a dreaam!).

If Rep. Lewis could persue that kind of dream, then maybe I’d shed a few tears for Martin and his speech. But then, Rep. Lewis would have to find a real job.

Maybe it’s the black community that needs change.

congrats to Barry O for being the first minority on a major party ticket. I mean that, it is quite an accomplishment is to be looked at as a milestone in the trek toward equality.

that said, he belongs on the wrong side of history, not the right side as slick willie articulated.

Here is a nice piece on why the dems of today have it all backwards. Very well said.

Rep. John Lewis, with Dr. King and so many others, stood up for what was right. Some paid with their lives. No one made up what happened in Philadelphia, Mississippi, Georgia, or so many other places. As evidenced by some of the commentary already posted, and statements made by others, we still have a long way to go.

I am hopeful for this republic, and for the successful campaign of Senator Obama and Senator Biden. This is change I can believe in. May the Almighty bless America, and save us from our own evil, and persistant racism.

Intelligent people, you know what really kills me about the people who spew hate on these blogs. They always use alias name to hide beyond, just like the party they back hide behind there bank accounts. You all need to get a reality check. None of you are losing your jobs or your homes. None of you don’t worry about feeding your kids or paying your bills. The last eight years your bank accounts have gotten fatter and the average American has paid for it. The reason you all are hating so much, because you are scare of the good times coming to an end and believe me they are going to end in November.

Interesting take on things, Shawny. Especially given that the Republicans have been on the “wrong side of history,” as conservatives usually are, for several decades now.

This whole “government is the enemy” crap was tired even when Reagan was still spewing it. Real Americans know that government has its place, just as business does; and that each is needed to check the inevitable corruption and excesses of the other.

How does John Lewis keep getting elected?

Does marching w/MLK & getting your head caved in qualify you to represent a large congressional district?

What has he done except make the King heirs multi-millionaires?

How many government jobs has he brought to Atlanta?

He’s a joke !

Reality,

Thanks for the name calling. I’ll bet you were bullied in school, huh?

If you think Cynthia’s columns have no agenda, then you’re simply not paying attention.

And, please, cut the crap with the “don’t hate” message. It’s so tired. One can disagree with another person without hating. But I guess being hated allows you to continue being a victim.

Let it go.

John Lewis: One-Trick Pony.

Seriously. His only apparent interest is to talk about race relations. Outside of that, he’s just your typical class-envy liberal. Keeping the divide alive has kept Jesse Jackson in a job for decades.

Now, that said, what Martin Luther King Jr accomplished was amazing, and there is no doubt Lewis was a major part of that. Kudos for his work in the 1960s. Darned shame that he keeps falling back on that for everything he does. For him, it’s ALL about race.

Man wasn’t John Lewis the face of “blacks must dump Hillary for the black guy”. I’m not a big Hillary fan, but watching the ENTIRE black community just abandon her was tough to watch.

To Emma:

Just like Cynthia, and Terrence Moore, and Rep. Lewis, it’s all about race and color for you, isn’t it? Those who disagree must be “WHITE people” in your eyes.

Time has passed Rep. Lewis by. He’s done nothing of substance in his elected role, other than continuously refer back to his role in the civil rights movement. and sadly, I think his constituents continue to elect him based on his history from the 1960s, not what he’s actually done as a representative.

Copyleft, how many Republicans are on the Clayton County school board? How many support Obama? How many people who have studrnts in Clayton County are Republicns and how many are Democrats. Copyleft, you will never and I mean never see a Republican majority school lose it’s acreditation…only Democrats can be that stupid and unqualified.

BS,

Anytime you ask the black community to take responsibility for itself you’re missing the point.

John Lewis represents what the black community has embraced - slavery to government. They didn’t march to be free, they just wanted to change masters.

The responsibility of marriage, raising children and caring for the community one family at a time is not the goal of the community.

John Lewis can remember 45 years ago, he just can’t remember 45 mins ago. someone will need to direct him to the airport and make sure he gets on the right plane to Atlanta. HOWEVER, he does have a big taxpayer budget to pay for staff, his salary and court judgements from and now he will have ” CHANGE YOU CAN BELIEVE IT” to make it even fatter
