Michelle Obama hit the right notes
The Atlanta Journal-Constitution
Posted 8 a.m. Tuesday
Even in the 21st century, it’s not easy being an assertive and accomplished professional woman, as Hillary Clinton and many others would attest. Throw in dark skin and you’ve got ready made stereotypes, including that of the “angry black woman.”
Michelle Obama’s job last night was to prove she isn’t angry or cold or mean or somehow un-American. She did what she set out to do with a speech that focused on family relationships and was delivered in a warm and casual tone. She waxed sentimental talking of her father’s illness; she also managed to remind voters that she grew up working class, in an apartment so small she and her brother virtually shared a room.
If she keeps that same tone and focus for the rest of the campaign, the McCain camp will have a harder time caricaturing her as Omarosa.

Obama is not selling hope in one’s self he is selling hope in more government. She did not love this country until he was winning. The ultimate in selfishness.

*APPLAUSE* Very well said Mrs. Obama! Here is a woman who is worthy of being the First Lady that I can look up to. Someone who values her God, her family and her country. I’m so excited about Americas future!

Michelle Obama will make the best First Lady for the 21st century in America. As opposed to what we’ve witnessed for the past 8 years — who is Laura, anyway, and what has she done to advance America’s needs during her husband’s regime???

Michelle Obama’s speech was amazing! She spoke from her heart and it showed. If people think Hillary Clinton is great because she’s a woman, try being an African-American woman in the US, and still accomplishing all Michelle Obama has accomplished. She represents the true American dream. I am going to be so proud to have her as our next First Lady!

Last night proved she could read a teleprompter. We don’t reveal character when we know the eyes of millions are upon us. We, and in this case, she revealed her character when she thought nothing was at risk and nobody was paying attention. If giving a speech proves anything, it proves that there still are suckers born every minute.

All Michelle proved was how far she’ll go and how many lies she’ll tell to save her image.
A few months ago, Michelle said “This is the only time I have liked this country” and now she says “…and This is why I love this country…” Talk about flip-flopping and doing anything you can to save your image.

I love politics; it’s seriously so entertaining, and often times confusing. Like who to trust enough to vote in office for the next four critical years? Based on most certainly what happened the last four years! Even if we never read an article about it or watched a TV. show about it. We’ve felt it deeply to the point of causing our soul to tremble with what’s next? America has so many issues; some small and some large but all on a full platter of ideologies that segment us even more. What has history shown us? Have we been tricked or jinxed? Who would have even envisioned the internet even as we blog now? It was a long time before it got on; people just did not understand it. It was the change that really said, “look, we got to change gears here.” Because the world is updating.

Tori, if it takes a presidential candidate or, worse yet, his wife, to make you excited about America’s future, you must be generally unable to achieve any happiness on your own accord.
If you want CHANGE or HOPE for a better future, go out and make your change. Don’t wait for some other person to create it for you.

I feel sorry for all you people that spew hate in this column. You have to give it to Michelle Obama. She did it last night. She was eloquent. She did an amazing job and for those of you that don’t see her as the next First Lady get over yourselves. I am sure by the end of today so many of you will have hateful things to say, to you, I pray for you because that is not God. That’s the devil. I pray for your souls. Don’t hate because the next couple in the White House will be African American, notice the last word is American, they deserve to be there just like 90 year old McCain. Yes, I know he is only 70 something. Too old to be running for president.

It never stops amazing me that when you open up the door for comments under the veil of anonymity the number of CHUMPs (Cowards Hiding Under Malicious Posts) that it will invite to spew hatred…The speech was passionate and well presented. She spoke of her love of country and family. That is it. Had Cindy McCain, and I hope she will, given the same speech then it should get the same response. For the sake of decency people, stop acting like scared children and give due respect where it is deserved regardless of the messenger.

I’ve noticed a pattern with the anti-Obama rationale. You all don’t seem to have anything bad to say about him, outside of racial epithets and bandwagon falsehoods about religion and background. You also don’t really have anything good to say about McCain. So, as long as you don’t have an argument for your side, you simply make Obama look better than McCain.

Ms. Obama spoke with eloquence and from her heart. What is most disappointing are some of the hateful comments I have read regarding what she said. It proves that ignorance runs deep and hate still seems loom ever stronger - which is why even if Barack Obama is the best candidate there are individuals that will not vote for him because of the color of his skin.

Well well well, it didn’t take long for the race card to be played(AJ and MB). It isn’t about race u idiots. It’s about what she said a few months ago “this is the first time I’ve been proud of my country” and now she’s trying to make us forget about what she said.

Michelle Obama did very well speaking on last night. She set the tone about her family and husband. As a black male, I can understand her reference about being proud of her country for the first time. If you have not struggled and understood racial oppression, you could not possible understand. I am proud that a black male is considered seriously for President. I am proud that some Americans have given a candiadate an opportunity to become the most power man in the world. I would have been proud if the canaidate was a woman or Latino. The USA is becoming more and more diverse and our leaders should reflect that aspect. Now, I believe as this blog continues we will see that some people will go over the top and say racial things, both black and white. That is why sometimes I am not proud of the people of this country. If you don’t like him because of ideology then fine , lets keep the conversation civil.

Be nice to see how many of you could survive the scrutiny that comes with being a political figure. Be it McCain or Obama’s camp, the way the media fools us with the “shiny” marble, any comment or lapse in judgement can be twisted to sound anyway that you want to depict the person. Be it Obama or McCain. Stop being stupid!
Please use your heads, do your OWN research, and then decide on who the best candidate is. But please don’t allow the media and 20-second sound bites decide who the next president is for the next 4 years.

If association makes one guilty then how do you explain this current administration and all of the people who have narrowly missed criminal punishment? Wouldn’t W also be guilty under your rule?
Has everyone forgotten the Keaton 5? How is financially corrupt John McCain fit to be president? The Clintons were mauled over White Water. No one has mentioned McCain’s involvement in the Keaton 5 corruption.

I don’t trust anyone who worshipped with Jeremiah Wright for 20 years or who tries to capitalize on their kids, like the Obamas did last night. It’s so sad that they have to script a “goodnight” from their children to their father. When selfish ambition is so powerful that you’re using your children to further it, imagine what you would do to the country to meet that end. It’s a scary prospect.
Sen. McCain has clearly shown his love for his country - throughout his life and not just in the campaign, as the Obamas have done. He may not be the perfect candidate, but I truly believe his motives are more genuine than Obama’s.

Michelle Obama gave a steady and inspired speach last night. Those who disagree had their mind made up before hand, and may not have even listened to it.
OK BH: She may have used a teleprompter, but her sincere and effortless delivery was outstanding. How about McCain? He can’t read one, nor deliver a speech on any subject without reading notes verbatum. Have you watched him? Oh sure he can make short answers from questions (like his agreement that the draft may be needed), but few are detailed.
Peadawg: Hope all is well; I am not trying to pick on you, but get your quotes right! She said that this was the first time that she was REALLY (with emphasis) proud of her country. Try listening to it in the context it was said!
atlkevin: I do not know about your marital state, but most successful people and families have a strong family support system. Being President is not a whimsical job, as Bush has repeated failed at. Having someone else you can trust to bounce ideas off of, to keep you humble, to discuss your fears, frustrations, and hopes and to help with the other side of the job is required.
Finally I see that Mrs. McCain is off to Georgia. Who elected her queen? Obama gives a speech in Germnay and he is accused that he is alledgedly thinks he is president. While I admire her compassion, what can she do? Besides the almighty Cheney is on his way; are they plane pooling? Is she delivering Budwiser?

Race is not the issue here - it’s about a Democratic candidate that does not have the experience or qualifications for the presidency. Both he and his wife are charismatic and speek very well, unfortunately they lack the necessary experience and have no firm platform on most issues, just “Change”! A “First Lady” is NOT an elected official so she should stay out of the political limelight!

Serious question for Obama supporters and those that love to throw out the “haters” term to anyone that opposes or degrades the chosen one: Name me one bill, one piece of legislation, one example of presidential-type leadership that he has done to prove that he will be able to bring this “change.” Better question - what is this “change” that he speaks of - to me it is nothing but drivel that his minions just drink up like a heroin junkie kissing up to his dealer begging for that next hit. I’m not that big of a fan of McCain but at least you know where he stands on an issue without throwing out hyperboles.
As for Mrs. Obama, one speech isn’t going to make her a saint to most people. She did a great job last night reading the teleprompter but I would like to see her in a few weeks at an election stop to see how she acts. We shall see.

King, you don’t understand racial oppression either. I’m so sick of blacks acting like they’re oppressed. BS. In the 20s and before, blacks were oppressed. Since then, and especially since the 60s, you’ve had plenty of time to cast aside any wrongs that were done to you and your ancestors, quit whining, and get a life. Instead, you’ve created thug kids who think getting an education and staying out of jail is “acting white.” You call success black men and women like Colin Powell and Condoleeza Rice “Uncle Tom” or “house slaves.” You’ll never get anywhere because of the chip on your shoulder, and frankly I don’t give a damn.

Out of all the comments posted yours was the most ignorant. I am Black Republican and have been for years from Califonia to Ohio, New York and now Georgia. Following intense research of all the candidates when they were several running for both parties, I decided that Barack Obama was my candidate of choice. Color had nothing to do with my choice as a matter of fact I spoke strongly about the fact that I wasn’t going to vote for Hillary because she was a woman or Barack because he is half black. I made my decision based on what I felt would be best for the U.S. as well as the World - as we do not live in a Silo, but a global economy.

How qualified was Bush to be president? If I remember correctly, didn’t he say that his preacher spoke to him in church about being the next leader and his mother looked at him glowingly as if to say that the preacher was talking about him. Yes, he was governor. But does that translate to being a qualified president?
We gave Bush a chance. Bush held his own during 9/11, united the country during that chance, and proved that despite all of the criticism he could lead. Ronald Reagan was another example. How much experience did he have before becoming president?
Obama deserves the same respect, and chance to prove himself.

After reading the above responses and commentaries to Ms. Tucker’s clear and poignant observations, with the exception of the level-headed few, all I hear spewing forth is vitriolic bigotry of the worst kind. It’s disgusting, uncalled for, and does not deserve print space. It’s 2008, people; what we need are leaders who can bridge the schisms that exist today. We need leaders who care about all people and not just a select few. We need leaders who can help us rebuild our physical and emotional infrastructure to make America stronger, more competitive, and the resolute world leader. We need leaders who can help build up the disenfranchised so that they become fulfilled attributes to our democratic society. So whoever you believe can fill those leadership roles, commit to it with passion but without the anger and hatred for what someone else might believe. Healthy debate is what this country should be about; I fear what we are, though, is some rendition of the Hatfield-McCoy feud.

How selfish of y’all to knock her for it. This is the 1st time someone that looks like her is running for president - YES that’s something to be proud of and I’m sure if it was the other way around y’all would feel the same way too. unimpressive, unmoving, dull, shallow and pedantic. Those are the words that come to mind when thinking about her speech. This was a calculated attempt to Americanize Michelle and it didn’t work, anyone with half a brain can see right through her. The thing that puzzles me is why is she so angry? She went to top universities, she and her husband are wealthy and famous and yet America is still a downright mean country and she hasn’t been proud of it until Barry became a contender for President. If we elect this duo then we truly deserve the disaster that will follow.

The one constant that I see in these posts are folks dead bent on voting their emotions which is exactly why we’re in the mess we’re in now. I’m neither Democrat nor Republican, but I will be casting my vote for Barack Obama because we can’t afford another 4 years of political gridlock. The fate of our Great Nation doesn’t rest with either party, but in our belief and hardwork towards the American Dream.

The rave reviews of Michelle Obama’s speech are odd, given the near restatement of her “I am proud for the first time” comment from earlier this year. Consider this quote from her address last night: “All of us driven by a simple belief that the world as it is just won’t do - that we have an obligation to fight for the world as it should be. That is the thread that connects our hearts. That is the thread that runs through my journey and Barack’s journey and so many other improbable journeys that have brought us here tonight, where the current of history meets this new tide of hope. That is why I love this country.”
Apparently, she either loves her country because she has found affinity with others who confirm her beliefs that America and the world need to be changed, or she loves her country because the current of history has brought her and her husband to the White House doorstep. Either way, it echoes her earlier comments. Perhaps that is why today’s coverage tends to focus on the appearances of her cute daughters rather than the substance of her speech—a tactic I scarcely believe a Republican could have gotten away with in the media.

Mrs. Obama’s heart felt message to the world was delivered with passionate poise. An honesty & forthrightness that made me so very PROUD of her !! I would be honored to have her serve as First Lady, and more proud to see her husband become President of the United States. They have a tremendous foundation that will absolutely solidify the term ” First Family”.

Mrs. Obama’s message has always been consistent. People that misquote her statement concerning America relied on mistatements by the media. As a person that has heard her speak in person, it is clear that her image has been unfairly tarnished.
If Clinton supporters feel the media misrepresented Hillary, why is it such a difficult transition to recognize the same applies to Michelle? People that continue to harp on that statement by Mrs. Obama, even after she clarified her intent, seem to need an excuse to disparage a stellar human being, not to promote intelligent dialogue that will move our country to more equity and economic prosperity.
Where are the voices of these same people in regards to human rights violations, a current President and Vice-President that throw out the Constitution on a whim, the fact that 25% of American children live in poverty, and an administration that does not provide for veterans that return home from war maimed and economically ruined?
We must focus on issues of substance and not allow all this pettiness to prevent thoughtful and MEANINGFUL discourse. Wake up America!

I guess there’s a lesson in that dark and depressing new Batman movie. It’s just a movie and I thought this sentiment was just part of the drama but, you know, maybe it applies here:
“You either die a hero or live long enough to see yourself become the villain.”
Here we have a black woman from a lower middle class, blue collar, working class family…a loving family…who rose above her beginnings to get an outstanding education and become the darling of a high-paying, glamorous law firm.
Then she turns her back on obtaining her own career success and fortune to help other people…a life of public service, which is truly heroic in this country where no one appreciates that service.
And now she’s sacrificed even more…she gave up her own contribution to public service in order to support her husband because she undoubtedly feels his contribution to this country would/could be greater than hers.
And no one recognizes it. Nope. No one appreciates how wonderful an American citizen she is. She’s been villified.
And that makes me ashamed of those people in my country.

Can’t everyone see she is a racist? She is SO anti-white. I am NOT a racist, I wanted C. Powell as president a few years ago. I just don’t think he is ready to lead with only 147 days of actual experience. I’m not to happy about McCain either, but he at least has experience. If you ask me, America doesn’t have a good choice this year. With all the resouces we have in this country, all the politicians want to do is make sure they “SAY” the things they think we want to hear.. and then not do a damn thing because we consistantly fight each other and fight true change. Believe all you want, Change will not come.

How in fact did Obama get to be named keynote speaker in 2004 at the Democratic Convention? He had not yet been elected to the US Senate; he was unknown except in the Illinois legislature and in Chicago. Was it a plot to insert a Muslim into our politics? Ha! that’s laugh. But there are people here in the South who think he is the anti-Christ; a Methodist man told my wife he is the anti-Christ; see what too much bible reading can do for you? Is he a Muslim? Hardly, Bush has told us anyway that most Muslims are fine people.
People opposing Obama won’t tell the truth: they won’t vote for a black. So they invent all sorts of things. They are hypocrites. Even Bill Clinton was almost honest enough to say that a black could not win.

A quick addendum: Let us not move to swiftly in granting martyr status to Ms. Obama for leaving the money-grubbing corporate sector. Earning over $300K a year to work for a hospital authority is precisely the kind of “public service” work most of us would love to find. Ironically, Pamela Stephenson and Grady comes to my mind.

Let’s all “hope for change and change for hope.” Where’s the substance of leadership?
When will folks get serious about the issues and realize that Obama is nothing but well packaged political rhetoric?
He says whatever the audience wants to hear, lies about his voting record, has no foreign policy or business experience, and is only a freshman senator. Obama himself said two years ago that he does not have enough experience to be president.

I am so sick and tired of being called a racist because I do not agree with Obama being our next president. I am a Republican. I believe in the basic values that Republican’s believe in. I believe in small government. I believe in personal health care. I believe that people should be accounted and responsible for their OWN financial situations. I believe in drilling off our coasts. And I DO NOT believe in taxing the wealthy just because they are wealthy!! This is why I will be voting McCain. I did not vote or support Kerry when he ran last election, and it was because I’m Republican! I’m not voting for Obama this year because I’m Republican. It has nothing to do with the color of his skin or where his family originates from. So, why I’m I and other McCain supporters being called racists. It’s simple….that is what African American’s ALWAYS fall back on when white people disagree with their views. No, it can’t be that we have different ideals, and different beliefs. No, it must be simply because we are white and you are black. Do you see McCain supporters calling every single Obama supporter racists?? It’s really ridiculous and actually embarrassing for the Democratic party.

Obama told the audience he was calling in from St. Louis when he was in Kansas City sitting in a family’s living room. He only realized where he really was after one of his spoiled brat little daughters asked him, “Daddy, what city are you in?”. He’s already confused Iraq and Iran in a speech (maybe we can forgive him here - it’s only one letter different). He is so totally unprepared to be a senator - how can you possibly think he is ready to be president? What a bunch of morons!

That goes for chinese-americans and hispanic americans and all the rest. Michele did a good(not great)job. It’s nice to see a personal face put on all the rhetoric. Well, good luck with all the Change guys, because that will be about all you have left of your paychecks when Obama is done with it. Read his plan! There are no tax cuts for the working class, you will have to apply for exemptions and they will send you a check if you fit the criteria. Knowing that most Americans are too lazy to go through whats needed to get paid, this will amount to a tax increase. So you will pay more for taxes, more for gas when he strikes down off shore drilling, more for utilities because oil will be $200 a barrel, and pay more for medical care unless you want to wait 6 months to get in to see your Doctor, because EVERYONE deserves free health care, RIGHT? That leaves you with your precious CHANGE…ching-a-ling dummies.
What would be a nice change? Someone who does what is in the national interest ALL the time even if it is against his party or against his own political self interest, someone like John McCain. If you take off your Obama Tshirt and really research and scrutinize the voting record and really want whats best for America, you will realized McCain is the only choice for getting things done in Washington.

Hmm…she’s not VP of a Chicago hospital. She’s on the board of directors for Chicago Coucil on Global Affairs, which is a public service council.
She graduated from law school in 1988. In 1993 she began her life of public service. She briefly returned to corporate interests in 2005-2007 when she served on the board of directors for a Wal-Mart food supplier but cut ties after criticism in regards to Wal-Marts unfair labor practices. She did not cease her public service activities during her tenure at this food supplier. in fact, she only earned about 50K each year from that “job”.
Lastly, she is currently on leave from the University of Chicago Hospitals. There she is vice president for community and external affairs, which, uh, is more public service….community outreach by the local academic medical center.

What? Surely you jest. To think that Obama’s tax policies would be designed to increase taxes to the middle or lowest income classes is to show you have done no homework on these issues at all. Read his BluePrint for Change, go to the website and learn how Obama’s tax plan call for retired folks who make less than 50K per year to owe no taxes at all, and most people will see a net increase in their personal income, when coupled with the $2,500/household decrease in costs of health care.
John McCain talks so much about being a war hero, but he wasn’t really a hero, per se. Yes he was captured, yes he paid a horrible price and served honorably. But he didn’t storm the beaches of Normandy, take a bullet to save a buddy, etc. He might make a decent General, or military man, but finishing 894th out of a class of 899 doesn’t make me feel very good about his intellect. Money and influence has impacted him adversely and he has not distanced himself from those who seek undue influence. He’s part of the problem, not part of the solution.
If you liked the last 8 years and the neocon agenda, you won’t jump ship to vote for Obama, even if Jim Leach is trying to help you understand why you should, and how your party has let you down.
Jim Leach gave a great speech last night, with substance of content. If he had the fire of Zell Miller, the Repubs would be knocked back on their heels this morning, and through Nov 4. Obama-Biden vs. McSame-??? - 341-197, or better. A complete landslide victory for Obama is what we’ll see.

After watching and listening to the monolithic public relations make-over for Mrs. Obama I am now more confused than I was when she first told how she had never been proud of America, in her adult life, until now. As she laid out all her accomplishments as well as achievements and how fortunate she was to have the parents and educational opportunities afforded her that she had, she was never proud? How could she not be proud back then? What does or did she expect? How ambitious is this woman? She scares me. I don’t think I was watching or listening to the real Michelle Obama. I was watching the version of a woman that was made over from start to finish in her contrived and calculated speech. I feel a little better, as a McCain supporter, to see that they’re dead even in most polls and he failed to get a bump in the polls by naming a DC insider such as Biden as his running mate. Anyone who knows anything about Biden knows something big and potentially dangerous will come flying oit his mouth soon. He is a loose cannon, just like Mrs Obama. For all you folks wondering what the “change” that the Obama campaign is promising is all about, it’s about getting the criminals out of the white house. It’s about a change in the administration. It’s about a change in the economy. It’s about changing back to when the rest of the world admired the United States. It’s about changing the rules so that we don’t support torturers. It’s about changing back to supporting those ideals that made this country great.

I’ve grown so weary of everyone (especially on these boards) saying that I “hate” because I don’t like Obama. It’s the typical victim mentality that so many of you share— if you don’t like what I like, I must be a hater. That’s insulting to my intelligence.
I don’t plan to vote for Obama because, and please read and re-read this, he will raise my taxes substantially. If you make more than $42,000 per year, your taxes WILL go up. I don’t want to pay another cent of my hard-earned money in taxes. I don’t want my money taken from me and given to someone else. Period.
So don’t trivialize my opinion and simply label me as a hater. If you only want to be around people who are rabid endorsers of the new messiah, you should be in Denver.
And people who irresponsibly throw out the term “racist” when anyone disagrees with them are setting civil rights movement back decades. You’ve diluted the term to the point that people simply ignore it. You’ve cried wolf too many times. So call me racist if you want. I know I’m not. I could care less what you think about me, but you’re certainly not doing any favors to your cause.

Jean- Welcome to Earth, life is not fair. If Toni’s daddy and Grandpa own a business and don’t want to hire black people that is their perogative. Its not right or smart but its their investment and their business and they should be able to manage it how they see fit. If you don’t like it, make your own job, sacrifice and save your money and open your own business the way millions of whites and non-whites have done for hundreds of years. It has NEVER been easier and less hazardous to your personal finances to own your own business than it is right now. If you have the intelligence and work ethic to compete in the marketplace you will most likely be successful. Quit blaming white America for your problems, I don’t here too much griping from other ethnic groups. They are just glad to be here where they have the opportunity to be who they want to be. They understand that they have to sacrifice to give their children a better life. Before excoriating America, business owners and whites, ask yourself if you are willing to make the sacrifices necessary to build a better life, not for you, but for your children.

The recent puch for black voter registeration is a fraud and it’s being exposed. Nothing is more corrupt than black political churches, the big staging rallies. They get celebs and rappers to show up to get people to register to vote, most do so illegally. Colorado is looking into this now and they plan to file charges. Half of the new voters in Co are convited felons who can’t vote legally. Black churches, stay out of politics and keep to preaching. Jean: No, I don’t understand. I don’t understand how you can blame my daddy and my grand daddy for you and your family not having a job…what…just because we are white?? My grandfather moved from West Virginia to Chicago by himself when he was 13 years with $2 in his pocket. When he got to the big city, he was called everything from hick to hillbilly, but he didn’t let that stop him. He worked his A@@ off and retired when he was 55. My dad started his own company about 15 years ago. He went 8 months without getting paid and we lived off of my mother’s $5.25 per hour job and their savings account. I work full time and attend college full time. NOTHING was handed to any of my family members, and NOTHING was handed to me. So, excuse me when I don’t take a chill pill when we have a candidate talking about taking from me and my family what we worked so hard for. I do not believe that it is our responsibility to make sure you and your family have healthcare. You want healthcare….get a job that offers it!! I do not believe that the people who worked and received an education should pay more taxes to commensate for the people who live off welfare. My family and I worked hard for what we have today, and I will not feel ashamed for it and I should not be punished for it. And, there are plenty….let me repeat that….PLENTY of educated, successful black people in the United States. The only reason why you are not successful is your personal choices, and it is a cop out to blame others!
OH and PS…considering that grandfather hired minorities when he worked, and that my father hires minorities now (and imagine this-he offers them fair pay and health insurance!)….they have probably done more good for black people then you and your family will ever be able to do.

I don’t know why the AJC keeps putting up these blogs to only showcase how ignorant people are. It doesn’t matter how much experience Obama has or doesn’t have, it doesn’t matter if McCain served his country, etc. Point blank! Taxes are going to go up no matter who’s president . Its the only way to fix this mess of a situation Bush has left us in.

John McCain is using the democrat’s own words to disparage Obama’s inexperience. Including his own Vice President nominee. How embarrassing!! And with a white cloacked do-nothing liberal Congressonial leader speaking, on vacation, while we suffer through another energy crisis. This campaign is looking more and more like Jimmy Carter’s second term.
But is a Jimmy Carter second term really the kind of change America needs for the future??

His mom is white so dont hate she could have easily been yours. McCain is just to damn old for this. When the debates come up Obama will surely tear him apart. Wow!!!! It is a shame and a little scary what some people will say or do if they think they can remain anonymous. Some of you are so mean spirited and vile. Yet you have the audacity to talk about Rev. Jeremiah Wright. He could not have spewed any more hatred than some of you have done on this blog. In fact, I would hate to think about the children that some of you are raising with your attitudes. God bless America!!! It is possible to be a Republican and not hate all Democrats and vice versa!

The fact of the matter, regardless of clever speeches, is that Americans have a lousy choice this time around. We have a rookie, and a genuine Manchurian candidate. While people try to say McCain will be more of the same Bush politics (totally untrue, McCain has voted against Bush so often he’s been acused of being a democrat), they overlook the fact that surviving with Washington even as a president requires years of carefully cultivated political relationships that Obama simply doesn’t have. If Obama wins the top seat, most educated people will see that it’s just a novelty with no more power or political importance than King Tut. Sure it makes history, but is that the only value?

Uh-Alie-whatever- I’ve read Obama’s tax plan and you don’t get anything unless you apply for it. Sure you may pay less taxes after tax day, but that is assuming you get all the tax credits you will be owed. Thats the oldest trick in the government handbook, making you find out where you can get some of your own hard earned money back. Why do you people want the government to run your lives and take your money!!! For god sakes grow a spine and take responsibility for yourself. All the government does is wrecklessly spend your money. If you want to take away our ability to make war, take the money from the government. If you had to pass a tax increase to pay for a war, I gaurantee you wouldn’t see us in any more “regional” conflicts.

Peadawg if you’re going to quote someone and hold a grudge over what wwas saisd then at lest know what you’re quoting. Michelle said “for the first time in my ADULT LIFE I am proud of America. Which by the way this quote has been taken out of context ad nausem. EyePod, I work with brilliant people who are on the road all the time and they say sometimes they wake up and don’t know what city they are in, so calling him a moron was a bit harsh. The bottom line, whether some of “you people” want to admit it or not, there is not a woman in your miserable lives who can hold a candle to Michelle Obama.

Hey Peadawg, if you are going to reference someone’s quote, get the quote right. Michelle did NOT say “This is the only time I have liked this country.” What Michelle did say was “for the first time in my adult life, I am really proud of my country, because it feels like hope is making a comeback.” I myself have not been proud of many things America has done especially over this so called “war” in Iraq. By the way, have we caught Bin Laden yet? It’s no different than a parent being disappointed with something their child did or said. You can be disappointed with someone or something but still have faith and favor in that someone or something. So, please stop twisting what Michelle said to try and make her seem anti American.

It is really entertaining reading all of these blogs and hearing how the ‘crazies’ come out in masses. Having a “BLACK AMERICAN” would be just as good(or bad) as having a “WHITE AMERICAN” for president.I just don’t care to have a president that is an excellent orator and speaker, but has no substance or background to show us. I’m sure Obama’s wife and family members all love him and think he is great! But the bottom line is,what is this ‘change’ he keeps talking about? I have heard/read that he will increase taxes, push for free heath care, cut out a lot of the $$$ that are ‘wasted ’ on miltary spending (Keeping us free and protected),give all 12 million ILLEGAL immigrants some type of LEGAL status, and various other things that amount to hand outs to the less fortunate(or less productive) members of society..You can look up the numbers and see just which elements or people make up the bulk of this category…. Just don’t be surprised when we see more and more of a hispanic or arabic (Islamic)culture inserted into or taking place of our own AMERICAN culture!!

Face it, folks, you’re just mad because you got to see how she grew up…with her dad getting up and going to work every day despite having MS. How she had TWO parents. A close relationship with her family.
She’s you and she’s me. Way more so than McCain, who was born with a silver spood and then married a platinum place setting, could EVERY be. And you don’t want that to be true.

These right-wingers just crack me up. They act so self-righteous and high-minded as though they’re always right and have all the answers, but yet look what their savior Bush has done with this country. We went from a balanced budget, or even a surplus, to a deep recession. Way to go Repubs! What great leadership! I’m sure you’re so proud, but I’m not and that’s why I’m voting for Obama.
McCain shows no strength or confidence in being able to competently lead this country out of this mess Bush has put us in. At least with Obama, I have hope that things will improve (sure can’t make it worse), wherease with McCain, I know it will not get better (and may even get worse).
All the insults and stupid speculation the republicans spew against Obama is just a reflection of their fear and ignorance. For all their bravado, they keep nominating weak-minded simpletons with a “shoot now, ask questions later” mentality to lead their party.

Obama wants to steal from the “rich” and give to the “poor.” According to him, my husband and I are “rich,” so he wants about 70% of our income in taxes. (See a WSJ article from about a week ago called “Obamanomics.) I wasn’t given anything that has made me “rich” today. I worked hard and went to a college where I had a scholarship. I took out student loans and went to an in-state school for law school. My husband did Naval ROTC to pay for college and saved enough in the Navy to pay his own way through law school. We do make a lot of money, but we live modestly and are currently paying off student loans (the interest on which we can’t deduct - again - because we’re “rich”). Since we’re so “rich,” we both drive 10 year old cars and live in half of a duplex and rent out the other half. We regularly work at least 10-12 hours about 5-6 days a week. I’m eating a Lean Cuisine at my desk right now and am taking a 20 minute break from a long day of work. Someone please explain to me why I should have to share 70% of what I EARN with everyone else involuntarily?
Our current system is totally screwed up. It rewards the opposite values from what America was founded on. The “change” that we really need is hard work, responsibility, and accountability by every American. We all need to provide for ourselves, live within our means, and VOLUNTARILY take care of people who justifiably need help. Increasing entitlement programs is NOT the answer. Everything Obama proposes is a “give a man a fish” entitlement and not a “teach a man to fish” program. I refuse to vote for someone who will rob me of the fruits of my labor so that he can use rhetoric to convince everyone he’s making a difference. Obama’s proposals to increase the welfare state are not CHANGE. It’s exactly what we’ve been doing since FDR. Not coincidentally, our society has been deteriorating since then because most people no longer have accountability or value hard work. I firmly believe that America provides equality of opportunity, for the most part, if you take advantage of the opportunity. I’m an example of that. However, I don’t believe that it should provide forced equality of outcome. What’s the incentive to work hard? Equality of outcome is Socialism, and it doesn’t work.

Why if I am white am I a racist if I choose to vote for McCain. Does that make black people and white and muslim people racist if tehy vote for Obama. That is stupidity, sure there are some white people that will not vote for Obama b/c he has some black relatives. Just as there are many black people who will not vote for McCain b/c he is white. There are two sides of the tale. The reason that I am currently leaning to McCain is that I do not trust Obama. He says he is going to change this and that, yet he never tells us exactly how. It does also concern me that he lives in a 1.68 Million dollar home. He got this home while he was supposed to be a community activist. Sounds like the only activity was him taking side money somehow, cause community activist do not make that kind of money. I know McCain does not know how many houses he has, but I know how he, his wife, paid for them. All I am saying is there are some race issues in this election, but that will not be the determining factor of the election. I would also like for people to quit saying that McCain is 4 more years of Bush. His policies seem relativly different, there are some that are the same. I see Obama as just another Jimmy Carter, both of them have in the sky ideas yet reality is a far different thing. Another question I really love, why should the rich be taxed and the poor not so much. Last time I checked this is America meaning you are free to get an education and be as great as you choose. The only one who can truely stop you is yourself. So why should we take more money from the rich who either them or their parents worked extreamly hard to gather their wealth. Then not tax someone who willingly gave up on their education and quit school after whatever level they did. Remember that the richest 5% pays a total of more than 50% of all taxes collected.

I will answer your question. Prior to Barack running for President Blacks supported White Democrats greater than 80% since the 60’s. John Kerry (a white man) received 88% of the Black vote!
The truth of the matter is that this “greater than 90%” number is only an uptick of addtional Blacks who were simply inspired by Baracks candidacy.
You see Rebel Yell someone like you would ignore the facts and just be emotional without expecting to be challenged on it. Well here is your challenge. And I hope others who might read this post will consider the point and themselves better understand that the what you spew is simply RHETORIC.

True John McCain may not be able to read the teleprompter, but he doesn’t need to. He speaks with conviction about what he believes in and is not afraid to take an unpopular stance on a position. Look at the Saddleback videos if you want a good example of how these guys do on their feet. I doubt you’ll ever here McCain say that any decision as President would be above his “pay grade”.

I think she came across as a competant but caring woman. Professional but not scary as Condi. Not as maternal as Pelosi but still came across as a complete woman in the public and private areas. If her daughters are any indication, she’ll win over America.
She’s definitely winning the battle of potential first wives.
Cindy McCain has hardly left a favorable impression in people’s mind. When she does appear in public, she comes across as an aging trophy wife or at best, a lady who lunches.
Not a vibrant, energetic woman who is in touch with today’s reality, more a detached touch a la the Bush ladies. Which is not a compliment. I can honestly see her putting her foot in her mouth like Barbara’s Katrina, war, and other comments.
At the best she’s in the Junior League mold. She really cares, sometimes, when she’s not tooling around in her BMW in her gated community.

Hey LB
Here are a couple of facts for you:
George Bush has been in office for 7 1/2 years. The first six the economy was fine. A little over one year ago: 1) Consumer confidence stood at a 2 1/2 year high; 2) Regular gasoline sold for $2.19 a gallon; 3) the unemployment rate was 4.5%. 4) the DOW JONES hit a record high—14,000 + 5) American’s were buying new cars, taking cruises, vacations o’seas, living large!…
But American’s wanted ‘CHANGE’! So, in 2006 they voted in a Democratic Congress & yep—we got ‘CHANGE’ all right. In the PAST YEAR: 1) Consumer confidence has plummeted ; 2) Gasoline is now over $4 a gallon & climbing!; 3) Unemployment is up to 5% (a 10% increase); 4) Americans have seen their home equity drop by $12 TRILLION DO LLARS & prices still dropping; 5) 1% of American homes are in foreclosure. 6) as I write, THE DOW is probing another low~~11,100— $2.5 TRILLION DOLLARS HAS EVAPORATED FROM THEIR STOCKS, BONDS & MUTUAL FUNDS INVESTMENT PORTFOLIOS!
I do believe that you give President Bush way to much credit. I mean…for one man to be able to put our nation into the state that it is under the House’s nose that is controlled by Democrats, is quite a job!! But no….let’s not blame our nation’s present state on the government as a whole and their poor management. No, it makes much more sense to blame it on ONE SINGLE MAN!

Anyone can read a teleprompter, have a half dozen’s speech coaches and do what all you bleeding heart liberals claimed above.
HOWEVER, talk is cheap AND we have seen how she ‘walks the talk’ with her long association with the Jeremiah Wright (no true man of the cloth would use the language he does), her long association with Louis Farrakhan, Her senior year thesis at Princeton where she stated “further integration and/or assimilation into a white cultural and social structure that will only allow me to remain on the periphery of society; never becoming a full participant.” … NOW, who’s the RACIST
Then we get to Barack Obama and his ‘head start’ program in Illinois, where his district has one of the highest illiterate rate in the country. Is that the Change we can look forward (or is that backwards) to?

OK tcoach I’ll offer this.
Do you know that Barack Obama was a Professor at the very prestigious University of Chicago? Did you know that his wife was a corporate health executive before she gave all of that up. You are aware that Audacity of Hope was his second book, correct?
As a reference, I purchased a $200K home on a salary of $85K/year four years ago, so it is not at all inconceivable that they could afford a home even 900,000 given their professions. And let’s face it, business people/political all the time earn consulting/speaking fees etc all the time for fly by night work that they do. I just think sometimes we grasp for the straws too much, that’s all.
As for your other point, perspective is everything, and quite honestly it becomes ever more apparent that there is a fundamental perspective difference between people who support Obama and people who do not.
Here is what I would like to offer..I think it is unfair when an individual would challenge another to recite from the top of their heads a list of “accomplishments” per se for a particular candidate. Not only can I not recall a list for Obama, but I also cannot for McCain, or Romney, or Edwards, or even H.Clinton. And you know what? Most Americans cannot We only repeat that which is given to us through party talking points and media heads. But that is why there is a record at the government websites and the candidates sites as well, and I have visited both. I saw a long list of meaningful legislation that BO sponsored of co-authored.
I ask you..what “real” accouplishments did GWB have prior to reaching the White House? There was one thing he was well known for, signing death warrants. Most of Baracks work was done in the State Senate, which you would have no interest unless you live in his State, nor do you desire to give him credit for that almost 8 years. You only want to make it seems as if this guy just walked off the street. There is no set list of accomplishments that qualify you for President. What makes BO “special” as you say is a simple thing.. this guy has the ability to inspire and lead people into action. You only have to look at the impact his influence since 2004 on the political climate in this country. When in your lifetime have you seen political engagement on this level? Unless you were an adult in the 60’s I would be hard pressed to believe ever.
You may not view this country as being at a crossroads, but many do. And the way we go forward will determine whether or not we remain a true world power or the rest of the world decides that we are a country worth following or respecting any longer. Say what you want, but we owe everyone money, our economy in shambles, our people severly divided and our military might diminished. Kinda like a dog with no teeth.
(No usage or spell check here). I can elaborate further if you desire.

Well Rebel Yell, I guess you have provided a “cute” response without much substantive rebuttal.
But then again, I guess one cannot argue with the facts huh?

The people who already decided to hate Michelle Obama will continue to hate her even after she saves their dog from a burning building.
It’s what they do; it’s all they have. We should not revile them, just pity their obsessive hatred and fear.

Still nothing to tell me what the man has done to recieve my vote. True he was a member of the state senate for 8 years, that does not hold much weight with me my grandfather was a member of the state senate for 12 years in the 60s and 70s and he would himself tell you far does that make you ready for presidency. Also check the record his books were almost failures until he began to run for president. So by your figures 85,000 for 200,000 you are guesstimating by that claim then that him and his wife made more than 380,000 when his wife was only making 250,000. Let me give you one of his quotes. “I was not aware I voted no” This vote he wanted to change on the record that he meant to vote yes. This was a bill that by voting no meant you were stripping millions of dollars from a child welfare office on the west side of chicago. In the nearly 4,000 votes he cast since 1996 as an Illinois senator he admitted to goofing and hitting the wrong button on atleast 6 other times. What does that say for his attention to detail or does it speak more to him wanting to play both sides of the fence. Point me in the direction of how he is going to change things maybe write som emore letters for a slum loard so he can gain 14 million in city contracts and such. The guys in Washington DC already do these kinds of things. All I can tell is that he wants way more government control in our everyday lives and he is looking to vacate each and evry American of his/her responsibility to determine their own sucess and accept that they are responsible for their own failed money and lives.

Not everyone hates Michelle Obama just because they see her as a liar. People are allowed to disagree they may have a reason not to like her. Like I don’t know this is the first time i am really proud of America then to say I love America. Just seems kinda shaky. She seems to only say what is best for her, or her husband. That is when she has had time to prepare. But then again that can’t be true if we are to assume she prepared for her senior thesis. If I said and wrote those kind of things in reverse order as a white male, most likely my teacher would not have accepted the work. How scripted could her speech have possibly been, all the way down to her 1950s aunt b dress she was wearing. I looked and nothing that style or anything close to it has she worn until last night. Not to mention her youngest daughter had on the same style dress. If that is what her handlers think will connect her to middle class America they do not know much about us at all.

Check out the People Magazine Article…When Michelle Learned that It Was Job Biden and Not Hillary She snapped her fingers and yelled out GOOD THAT’S THE RIGHT CHOICE!! Are you going to take this Hillary Supporters? Hillary should have been VP. How can you choose Biden with no votes over Hillary’s 8 muillion votes!!!!!! As a Republican I’m glad its not…that would have been a killer ticket…However Obama snubbed Hillary and her Supporters….Very Disrespectful Michelle HATES Hillary and that’s why she was not on the Ticket!!!! That’s why they have been so rude and disrespectful towards Hillary and her 8 million Supporters….Hillary wants you to vote for McCain to give her a shot in 2012…..if Obama win she will never ever have another shot at the presidency….VOTE MCCAIN!!

I am a 44 year old African American Man born and raised in Chicago. I am educated, well spoken, hard working MARRIED father of 4. I consider Michelle Obama a peer and relate to her and her husband very well. I grew up middle class in Chicago to professional parents, the true life version of a Cosby kid the fictional middle class African American family that Bill Cosby made America see on his successful television show. The black middle class is real but seems totally invisible if you look at the media of today’s society. In the media’s portrayal African Americans have to be entertainers or athletes to be successful or our males are all want to be thugs, tattooed up, or saggy pants nitwits with braids.
Based upon the blogs I’ve seen from various other publications as well as this one the average Caucasian American believes both or those perceptions. They are stereotypes just like the many others any one can make up about another race they have passing contact with but no sincere knowledge of.
Imagine about how ridiculous it would be if your race were lumped under the stereotype of Caucasian women are like the Lohans and Spears families or Real Housewives reality series and Caucasian males are like the trio in the mugs shots caught in Colorado under suspicion for plotting to kill Obama.
The term African American just gives me more of an identity since our ancestors identity was stolen from them. They were labeled the “N” word, colored or many other words used to make sure they were considered inferior. I an a proud American citizen whose ancestors blood sweat and tears helped build this nation despite the racist attitudes and Jim Crow laws of this country used to put us down. We have never been fully understood represented or given recognition for the vast accomplishments we have contributed to this great Nation of ours. The wounds of segregation and southern Jim Crow laws are less than a generation removed and definitely not healed
The audacity that Michelle’s speech had to be teleprompted for her and not sincere shows the ignorance of many. She is a Princeton graduate why can’t she deliver an eloquent self written speech! The talking heads will break her speech down and infer as much negativity they can dream up into it to “SCARE WHITEY”.
It amazes me how many people in this country can be lead around like sheep by those who make a living stirring up negative rhetoric in the media.
Many black folks are very church orientated, it reflects our upbringings from the past where the church was the only safe place you could congregate in mass, hear the local news, fellowship with your community and have your frustrations expressed and given up to the lord to forgive. Many follow their pastors blindly but give educated and sensible folks enough credit that if their pastor gave a fired up sermon it is filtered out as his opinions and not the gospel. We laugh it off or vehemently discuss it and see you next week. If it were a weekly hate mongering thing we’d definitively not return.
If you take any public speakers speeches out of context and sound bite them they could be spun anyway you want. Rev. Wright was good enough to be invited to the White House during Clinton’s administration and patriotic enough to volunteer to serve in 2 separate branches of the military starting in Viet Nam, but now he is a vilified as a hate mongering Pastor. The devil himself should be more revered.
Tell me how Cindy McCain can inherit a fortune form her father and not have the conscious to share any bit of that wealth with the siblings from his first family. Tell me how John McCain can cheat on his dying wife then leave her for the younger rich blonde. How far has the media buried those facts?
McCain and his wife are so out of touch with the reality of the common citizen do you really think he cares how you are going to pay your mortgage if your company just outsourced your job to India, and closed your factory. He has to check with his staff to see how much property he owns.
If Michelle were blond haired blue eyed giving that speech today it would be copywrtten for children’s textbooks next fall or ready to mount in the Smithsonian.
McCain and the Republicans will do their best to Scare America so they can bleed the rest of the wealth out of this country while the common citizens of every race shall suffer!
The job of President of the United States is simply to make decisions based upon the facts that are presented to him regularly by the professionals who are experts in those areas. Those decisions affect our country and the World. Why wouldn’t you want a well educated man who has worked his way up through life with the insight of people from all walks of society and compassion for those less fortunate making those decisions? Or would you prefer another mindless millionaire who inherited his money. Once McCain gets your vote he will forget you exist and continue to p** off the world with out of touch TV cowboy posturing putiing us into another war we cannot afford.

Race relations between blacks and whites in this country are deteriorating rapidly. If Obama is elected—or, worse, if he is not elected—will result in open warfare between the races. There will be much blood in the streets

Oh God here we go again……
Just a few points about your comments.
The Obama camp pounced on Cindy McCain’s family wealth for the passed few weeks now. But Obama’s wealth is off the table, according to you….typical Democrat. Cindy McCains father was a decorated pilot during WWII and worked hard to build a business after his service. Yet the Democrats (including Cynthia Liberal Racist Tucker) bashed the McCains for their entreprenurial abilities! It’s called capitalism so get over it and deal with it!
As far as Obama’s accomplishments in Chicago, they highlighted a “PJ” on the news the other night that Obama “claims” he was responsible for revitilization! This elderly women said, “Look at this building, does it look like anything has been done to you.”
Then there’s the Resco link! Obama had sweet deals for the property next to his home from Resco. Probably for something we’ll find out in years to come. Resco is now waiting his sentencing for jail time.
Obama and his phoney wife are nothing new!
Final Point. Obama hasn’t inspired anyone to do anything! He’s never managed anyone, never budgeted anything, never led anybody, but as Hilary said, he gave a good speech in 2004! Electing Obama to run the country would be as boneheaded as promoting an Airmen Basic in the Air Force to the position of Air Force Chief of Staff. He might give a good speech but, is he really ready to run the Air Force just as Obama is illqualified to run the country.
You need to wake up and really think about what is at stake for our country.

Well Robert. As luck would have it I hail from and was raised in the projects on the South Side of Chicago, so I am well aware of the conditions there throughout the south side from 22nd street on the north out to the “wild 100’s” on the south; from Lake Shore Drive on the east to Western on the west, that’s basically your “south side”. I happened to attend High School in Hyde Park and my wife lived in Hyde Park.
If you know anything about the area that Barack represented it is expansive. And yes there is much “revitalization” going on there that he had a hand in being the Senator, he’s not lying about that. Much like other major cities, you can have million dollar homes on one block and abject poverty on the next. In Chicago there are still many pockets of slums, though there is regentrification all around it. Barack nor any politician can account for, save or even give attention to every single property on the South Side of Chicago. Anyone who believes that is a FOOL.
Go ahead and suck all that garbage up dude, it suits your purpose. And heaven forbid I stand in the way of that. I will say this to you though, get a clue.

And about Cindy McCain’s wealth..
No one has a problem with Cindy McCain’s wealth, but again to suit your and your party’s purpose you want to make it seem that way.
Here is the position of a rational person such as myself. If you are a son and grandson of an Admiral who got a Naval Academy education who has spent your entire professional adult life in the U.S. Senate; who is worth over $100 million and you have 7 residences, don’t try to paint someone who earned everything they got through grinding it out and earned a little money (which, by the way is less than what you classify as “rich”) actually working as an “elistist”.
Yeah Cindy’s dad worked hard to build the business and she benefitted. That is the way it is and has been in the white community (playing my race card now). You know there was a time when Black people tried to build and run successful business so that they too could build wealth to pass along to successive generations.. want to know what happened to them? At every turn…
As for your last paragraph, it’s absurd. “Never inspired anyone to do anything” huh? Really? You might want to check with Rush Limbaugh on that one. Barack has y’all @$$es scramblin’…”We’ll gotta slow this boy down, OPERATION CHAOS…OPERATION CHAOS!!!”. All this excitement this election has absolutely nothing to do the McCain buddy.
How much money has his campaign raised again? Never managed anyone huh? Seem to be managing this campaign well…
I know exactly what’s at stake for this country. Oh yeah.. I also served 15 years in the military through 2003 (so save the AirForce reference, I wouldn’t allow an Airmen to run water). What’s at stake is we are doomed to continue on with backwards thinking like yours unless we change our direction, ideas and attitudes.

I wish everyone would put the finally I’m proud of my country to bed. First of all, you all leave out one important word. She said for the first time, I’m REALLY proud of my country. There is a difference. I can think of an example in the Bible where Satan told Eve, she would not SURELY die if she ate the forbidden fruit. He added one word which changed the meaning. The same thing is going on here. Are you people that stupid and bigoted? Even Laura Bush came to her defense and said that everyone was leaving out the word REALLY. All it takes is a little honesty. But of course, that would be too much. Our government for the last 8 years has been run on a pack of lies, but you all have nothing to say for that (and that is the truth) What, pray tell, are you going to do when the Obamas get into the White House?
