Are we slobs at the beach?
The Atlanta Journal-Constitution
St. Simons Island resident Tina McElroy Ansa urges Georgians who travel to the state coast to admire its beauty to please not trash up the place.
“Beer and soda cans are thrown from boats and wash up on the shore, along with disposable diapers. Cigarette butts and Styrofoam containers are left amid the granite rocks that line the otherwise pristine beaches.
” All we want to remind us of your visit are your good memories and some footprints in the sand,” she writes.
Are Georgians becoming the coastal version of the Ugly Americans?

This post makes no sense.
Are Ms. Ansa and/or the AJC Editor who posted this stating that visitors from Atlanta are responsible for most of the trash and garbage that is in the water or on the beach?
That is ignorant and illogical. It is more likely that visitors and local residents are all contributing at about the same rate. Except local residents contribute year round.

I think the problem is larger than St. Simons. We went down to the Florida panhandle a few weeks ago and it seems the beach is much more littered now than it used to be. I think it is a cultural thing with younger people who never learned or were not taught to be clean and neat and not to leave a mess for someone else to clean up. And the damned cigarette butts are awful.

The corrected last sentence: “All we want to remind us of your visit is your contribution to our economy.”

Right on, JB!!! And Atlantans aren’t any slobbier than anyone else in the U.S. Never mind the trash on our beaches - take a look at the side of the roads, the banks of rivers, the floor of the forests, and the streches of grass found everywhere in America. You will always see a plastic bag floating in the wind, or a coke can rolling away. We are hurting our planet much more than some of us care to think about.

Thank you , Dennis for pointing out that the littering problem may not be completely atributed to Atlantans. And I feel compelled to add that all who live in Atlanta aren’t necessarily from here…

We could go on all day about the environment, so I’m not going to add anything to that discussion. I’d just like to ask if you guys actualy have jobs. You’ve all commented after 8:00, (except Dennis, who was close enough), and it’s a Monday morning. Go to work! If you are at work, you shouldn’t be using your office’s computer to do this. No, this does not have anything to do with the article. If you don’t like it, you’re welcome to file a complaint.

If you read the actual article that Tina wrote, she does not say “Atlantans” are slobs. She simply notes that many tourists who visit do not clean up after themselves. Nice job spinning the truth, AJC.

Jolie is only a child who is trying to hide her identity with a fake name. She’s my boss’ daughter, and this isn’t the first time she has done this.

Jolie is my best friend. Her father is not the boss of anything; he is the employee in a McDonald’s near my house. Arnold is my brother and he does not like her; please disregard anything he says on this.

Lucy and Jody, please refrain from posting on this website. I know that you are one person (Jennifer, my boss’ daughter). Your father does not work for a fast food company, because if he did, you would not have your own personal computer. This is a place for grown ups. It is not meant for children. Please do not ever post on this website again.

Arnold, this is your father. Please get off this blog right now. You know that you are not allowed on these sites. Please tell your mother what I have just told you, and get back to work on your science homework. This is real; I’m serious.

I’m from ATL and keep the beach clean, thank you very much. It’s not the young people, it’s all the foreigners and fat lazy slobs that can’t walk ten feet to a trash can or just don’t care. Also, it’s not just SSI…it’s everywhere. Look around. People can’t even put their freakin cigarette butts in an ashtray.

I travel all over this great nation on business and I can tell you that Georgia, particularly the Atlanta suburbs (north and south) are the most painfully polluted areas I encounter. Nowhere else do I see people, especially young males, blatantly toss fast food bags, and cups and cans out their car windows like I see here on a regular basis. Add to that the debris that flies out of the beds of pickups and the huge uncovered trash trucks that roll down 75 and 575 delivering trash that blows out all over the place. Oh, don’t let me forget the countless cigarette butts, particularly those strewn at every off ramp. This state is disgusting. Southern pride? Not here folks.

How about we give people incentive (tax break?) for joining clean up crews? Why have the only people who ever are out cleaning up litter be city employees or the occasional chain gang or someone who was forced to do community service? The more citizenry we get out to help, the more vocal they will become about keeping the world a little cleaner - and the way to get someone wanting to help is money (just the way it is).

I live off a main road up in the Buford area, and main thorough-fare to the lake. I walk my two dogs every single day, down this one main road. Sometimes twice a day…….there are beer/soda cans/bottles, fast food boxes and bags, etc all strewn on the sidwalks and grassy areas.
While you all are complaining and passing the buck, I am being pro-active. I actually carry a huge garbage bag, and pick up litter while walking. It’s my community, and I like it clean, so why not pitch in. I will not sit around and whine and hope that people will stop littering. I am doing something for my community.
Now I don’t like picking up others messes, I can’t stand to see the trash on the side of the road, so I simply do something about it. It’s no big deal, just do it.

We need more slobs on the beach. That will keep all the topless sunbathers away. What am I saying? I meant less slobs, more topless sunbathers, but more beer and wine to get the babes drunk, so they only talk like slobs.
that’s it. Okay, everthings cool. Count me as DOWN for less slobs!

“Are Atlantans, becoming Georgia’s version of the Ugly Americans?”
Well, first you have to buy into the myth that Americans are ruder than any other group of travellers. This is another myth perpetuated by an America-hating media. In Atlanta, we see plenty of folks from all over. Guess what? I lot of them are rude boors. A lot of them are polite. Kind of like Americans.
It’s unfortunate that the AJC has to extrapolate their self-loathing as Americans to self-loathing as Atlantans.
It’s also interesting that Ms McElroy is so convinced that the littering is being done by Altantans. I guess none of their other vistors dump trash and that Altanta’s write their return address on cups before they drop them.
Finally, folks need to realize that when you live near a tourist destination, such rudeness is par for the course. That being said, I live near the civic center and I am not going to tag all gay folks as “ugly” because some of them left beer bottles on my porch.

Maybe if there was somewhere to recycle my beer cans and bottles in St. Simons Island, I wouldn’t have to throw them in the ocean or at nesting sea turtles.

All beaches should be Clothing Optional as nudists are more concerned with nature and the environment. They bring little, and leave nothing behind but their footprints in the sand. Those of you in the textile world should take note.
