Obama: man of many regrets
The Atlanta Journal-Constitution
Writer Luke Boggs comments that Barack Obama is always expressing regrets for his words and deeds- sometimes so quickly it will make a person’s head spin. Most recently Obama regrets allowing his children to be interviewed on “Access Hollywood.” The regret kicked in only four days after the interview. Boggs googled Obama and regret and came up with a million hits.
Does Obama fret and backtrack too frequently?

What this really shows is that Obama has no real work or political experience. He is Jr. Varsity entering a Varsity world. Rhetoric and regrets over reality and respect. Even this new Jesse Jackson “I’d like to cut his n*t’s off” thing shows that he is just a “fluff” candidate. They are only supporting him because he is the first African-American Presidential candidate. McCain may be the “elephant” in the room but Obama is a Trojan “Donkey”.

What a shallow and irresponsible hit piece. The central support for the opinion is that you “googled Obama and regret” and concluded he’s regretted “pretty often”??? Now there’s a firm analytical basis upon which to draw a reasoned conclusion.
Further, when a man speaks publicly several times a day, nearly every day for a year, he is bound to misspeak, speak off the cuff, or say something that he really didn’t intend to say. The fact that it’s only happened 3-4 times in the last year is a testament to how gifted he is. To suggest that admitting a mistake and moving to correct it bespeaks some inability to make tough decisions shows just how callow political commentary has become in this country.
It is impossible to have a reasoned discussion on a such an unreasoned premise. AJC.com readers deserve better than this.
By the way…I have one regret…having wasted 60 seconds of my life reading this drivel. Now that’s a minute I can’t get back.

So Mr. Boggs, was this really a story about “regrets” or was it merely a vehicle to bring up the 3 most embarassing moments from Obama’s primary campaign (that had pretty much been all but forgotten).
So are you saying that when a candidate misspeaks and says something he didn’t mean (which happens all the time), should he not regret it?
Hey, guess what? Googleing “Luke Boggs false logic” generates over 10,000 hits.

I regret that this guy had no experience to be President. He was a community organizer in Chicago …so he helped people pay their utility bills; big deal.
He was a lawyer at a Chicago law firm…but he didn’t make partner or win any big lawsuits.
He was a legislator in the Illinois legislature, but didn’t pass any significant legislation or stand out as a leader.
He is a US Senator but hasn’t introduced any significant legislation.
I regret that this man may be President but not have any credentials other than his skin color.

Some seem to be missing the point. Obama’s whole argument for being president is his judgement. He seems to regret all of the judgements he’s made. Wow, what a crappy story. Why are people being so overly critical of this guy? So he had some regrets. I regreted reading this story. I’m reading headline after headline about Obama doing this and that. And it is nothing of substance, but just an attempt for some jack a* writer to try and put in his two cents. Thanks but no. If you idiots have a problem with how this man handles his PERSONAl life, then come November vote for the old guy. Maybe if you were half as critcal as you are now on presidential nominees, Bush would not have been in the office for eight hellish years. GOD BLESS AMERICA!!

Please tell me how a few mistakes over an extremely long primary campaign translates into “obama regrets all of the judgments he’s made”.
Does McCain regret opposing those bush tax cuts he now seems to love? Does he regret calling Jerry Fallwell an agent of intolerance, then speaking at Fallwell’s school a few years later? Or how about McCain previously opposing the same offshore drilling proposals which he’s now in favor of. How about his initial support of roe v. wade and his “new” opposition to it? How about McCain’s coming out against his OWN finance reform legislation that he pushed so hard to get passed. I could go on, but you get the point.
Both candidates have changed their mind on issues, and both presumably regretted their previous choices. Thats a lot of “regret” on both sides. Don’t try to pan this kind of thing off as exclusive to obama.

Great argument Mr. Boggs! I have never EVER seen such reliable research as a google search to validate a political opinion! Brilliant! Just brilliant I tell you!
Upon further inspection googling “mccain + regrets” generates 844,000 hits. Granted, less than Obama, but compare the ratio of regretful hits to the total number of hits for each candidate. A google search of “mccain” generates 69,000,000 hits; “obama” generates 141,000,000. Obviously very flawed logic indeed.

From the same people who eagerly voted (twice) for a candidate who’s state legislature meets every two years, and who’s main executive duty consisted of being able to correctly sign his name on death warrants. Luckily for him, there was no spelling involved.

Actually I think Obama truely thought it was a simple interview with the America people.
The regret came when MSNBC, CNN, ABC, CBS and the AJC began pimping the girl’s sound bites over and over in another corrupt attempt at swaying American voters to their candidate. Only then did Obama realize and admit to the error of his ways. The real question is.., will he learn from it?

Google “Obama+carrots” and you get 437,000 hits. Does this make him a rabbit?. “Obama+snakes” and you get over 2 million hits…does this mean he’s a reptile? The devil? Google “obama+angel” and you get over 3 million hits. Does this mean he’s more good than bad because that’s more than “+snakes”?
No, what this proves is you can google lots of things with the word of Obama and get lots of hits.
Since your premise is you get a lot of hits with obama and regret so he must have a lot of them, doesn’t this remove that logic? and hence your premise? Either that or he also has a lot of carrots, angels, and snakes. Which I’d love to hear your theory on. NOT.
This was a hit piece - why not just write “I think you should not vote for Obama” and give the paper more ad space. You’d be doing everyone a favor.

Thanks to everyone who took the time to share an opinion about my op-ed, even if you were less than thrilled with it.
The parenthetical statement about googling “Obama” and “regrets” was intended as something of a joke. I put it in parentheses because I wasn’t really trying to prove anything with it.
Still, I admit that critics here and elsewhere who have noted that the number really doesn’t mean anything make a good point. And I regret including it.

I saw an empty suit run for office twice and ‘win’, back in 2000 and 2004. I think it’s a knee jerk reflex that some of us find Obama refreshing, after eight years of elitist arrogance in the White House. We may be making a mistake, but at least it’s a ‘different mistake’.
Truly, no one running for office this year, who stood a snowball’s chance, anyway, on either side of the ledger, offered anything in the way of a new vision for this nation, which is in desperate need of a reversal from the dismal W years. Obama is the person who is most hopeful, who reminds us that our nation doesn’t HAVE to act out of fear, seek divisiveness over unity, or take on a ‘them or us’ attitude to thrive.
So, we may be taken for a ride, but no less a ride than we’ve been on the past eight years…and the new direction at least feels like the wind is at our back.
Really, the next President - no matter who he or she is, conservative or liberal, will merely have the thankless job of cleaning up a historic mess. Then, they’ll leave office reviled for having merely gotten our heads above water again, than getting us to the promised land. Bush and Cheney took us too far away from our ideals and principles for us to make it back to ‘the promised land’ in a mere four years.
I admire Republicans who will admit that, just as I, as a Democrat, will admit that Barack doesn’t have many of the answers, and will fail as often as he succeeds. I’ll take that over a president who fails often but finds his own judgment infallible.

Hey all you Obama supporters who claim he misspoke or said something he didn’t intend to say. I got a bridge I want to sell you. He didn’t misspeak, and he meant what he said when he said it. His ‘regrets’ are nothing more than political expediency. I don’t know about the thing with hs kids, but he meant what he said about “…folks clinging to their guns and religion…”, he only regrets that it got national attention. And the same with his dealings with Tony Rezko. And as he kept saying (until now) he was opposed to the Iraq war so I believe he meant it when he said soldiers’ lives were wasted. These are full complete thoughts and sentences, and they are not things you say by accident. He only has regrets when something he says hurts him politically. Barack Obama is nothing new, nothing special, and definitely does NOT represent change. His actions demonstrate that he’s just another politician, like all the rest. The only reason to vote for him is if you want liberal policies, otherwise vote for McCain. At least that will get you policies that are a somewhat less liberal and hopefully constructionist judges (which you definitely WON’T get from Obama)!

Since he was elected he has been running for president..His regrets show lack of experience and sadly lack of knowledge..knowledge he would have had if he had held a few meetings on the committee he was appointed chairman of…
If he is elected President I fear another attack…with Wes Clark as his General in Charge we will not RETALIATE and we will start another series of attacks like we had in the 90’s… Perhaps like Clinton did he will ignore them..I hope so..because if he does anything NASTY his supporters will fade like ice in summer..I do not see many young men joining up to fight for him…and surrender will be the way. In another year our economy will be so weakened b y the High Oil Prices. there will be no money to fight or raise an army…Most of the Northernerrs will have died due to the cold .. and the rest of the folks in the midwest will be “growing” ethanol! And our Military equipment will be OUT OF GAS since the reserves will be drained by Democrats buying votes!

Its funny how ppl will say if Obama (or any Dem for that matter) is elected they fear another attack on the U.S. but the worst foreign attack on U.S. soil in modern history was under the watch of a so called “tough” Republican Prez.
Why does Bush get a pass on defending America just because he actually starting paying attention to threats to the U.S. and used what was at his disposal to prevent another one? Hell even Jimmy Carter would have done that.
I don’t get the Obama is not qualified for Prez talk just because he admits he could have taken a better approach on some matters. Hell Dubya doesn’t admit to regretting anything and he’s had more screw ups than any Prez since Nixon. And Dubya was no more qualified to be Prez than he was to be the Chief Executive of the numerous businesses he ran in to the ground in the past.
Obama is what this country needs and will get as its next Prez. A leader with humility, strong character, high moral standards, and most of all great intelligence. Somewhere down the line a majority of voting Americans got the idea that putting an average Joe, not so bright guy’s guy in charge of the country was a good idea and this country has been on a downward spiral ever since.
McCain while much smarter than Bush is clueless. His military experience doesn’t mean he would be a great commander in chief. Hell again, even Jimmy Carter had military experience.
McCain is out of touch and does not have a clue of the crunch working families are experiencing now. He still goes around claiming that the economy is not that bad as thousands upon thousands are losing their homes month after month, the national unemployment rate continues to rise and most Americans see a drastic cut in their disposable income due to sharp increases in gas prices. McCain is too blind to see what’s going on around him w/ the average American so how can he really know what to do to improve our lot. A community organizer such as Obama has been out in the streets w/ the ppl and knows whats going on and what problems need to be addressed.
It’s gonna be a great day for all Americans when Obama is elected to office this November.

Obama is a puppet of the ultra left, between them and the Clinton stooges running Obamas campaign he has gone mad! He regrets things because he doesn’t know what to say or think unless advised, all a lone he rambles AH OH HM stammer stammer hm ya ETC! It looks to be he can’t handle campaigning, he is cracking under preasure of his overblown ego and the demands of people around him! Could it be he went back to doing lines of cocaine? He started smoking again, he looks terrible and scattered and 10 lbs lighter, he was crying yesterday, if he can’t handle campaigning, what would happen he had to send the military to war, he would loose it, he has never made a tough call in his life, he has never made a multi million dollar desision, he is not presidential material 100 days in the Senate and the rest campaigning for president, I want my money back from both McCain and Barry Obama for the salaries as Senators should be forefited! I have never understood a 100 day senator that is a Muslim never tested with no experience at all with zero experience in the military or any concept of the military can can be allowed to run or be a president! His book defines him he smoked crack and pot and was raised a Muslim, his grand mother was a rabbid racist, his wife is a racist, he has no core of beliefs at all his family was so unfunctional he became the ordained puppet of the ULTRAL LEFT or a Manchurian Communist Muslim Trojan horse sent to the USA to destroy it, can we take that chance? Abosolutely not! We do need Screening on both sides before we ordain the presidential candidates! I will vote for McCain I know he is honest and will defend America, I know he is American and I know he understands the Military and the Economy, Obama gets an f- in every catagory! so he is an egomaniacal failure at life!! Rising taxes is not an economic policy it an economy killer, Raising taxes is his answer for everything and Obamas stance on the economy! Pretty soon you will see Obama in rehab for cocaine, with media gushing over him!!! Can anyone trust him? NO! BARRY SOETORO is his real name as an registered Muslim and and Indonesian citizen!

I regret that we have had eight years of a man with no capacity for self-reflection.
Now we are going to spend four years gazing at Obama’s navel and re-thinking what we re-thought four years ago.
Those who regret, while they may seem a bit shifty and even spineless, tend to make fewer major screwups (look at anything Bush has done) than those who are always certain they are right.

ATLborn and obviously educated.
A platform consisting of nothing more than higher taxes and bigger government does not indicate intelligence, maybe elitism, in the sense that maybe we are too dumb to take care of ourselves, so we need our smart Federal Govt. to help us. Obama is liberal hell bent on using the goverment as leverage to take from the do’s and give to the do nots.
His only redeeming factor is the symbolism he offers to black Americans, however at last check we are still a democracy and 88% non-black.

I’ll tell you what I regret. I regret that the Bush adminstration has left this nation in such a terrible situation that it is almost impossible to believe it. Worst housing market since the depression, no energy policy with gas prices killing the economy, 43 million without health insurance, a $ 10 trillion national debt (four times larger than seven years ago), and our international stature at the lowest in history. I’ll gladly take my chances with a really smart, inspirational new leader like Obama, even if he does admit when he’s wrong from time to time. The nation needs some new fresh ideas, and the world is praying that this country is smart enough to elect Obama and not this silly old fool McCain. That would really be regretful.

Googling, Obama comes in at 1.1 million hits and McCain has .9 million. I guess he is just as bad. Before Republican idiots point out McCain has been a Senator a lot longer and thus is much better, I would point out that it is likely that neither had many hits before their runs for President. As someone said, it’s a useless article.

Maybe I’m being bowled over with all the re-introduction of the “failure the first time” Jimmy Carter Era equipment, porported to cure Global Warming these days. but Obama has been caught up in this hoopla. Who cares how many times he says “I’m sorry.” If he says it too many times as he obviously has. Then there may be a need for an investigation in to who he’s saying it to….Mrs Obama or the American People or some unknown entity.

You McCain supporters, what do you think about McCain not showing any regret that he called his wife a c_nt for mentioning his hair was getting a little thin on top? That would be worth a half million hits if he had the balls to admit he said it.

This is an unfair article. Multiple times a day headlines are bursting the seams of newspapers and internet sites filled with stories of politicians apologizing for this statement, that action, or some association with an unsavory character. Barack Obama is no different from any of those politicians, journalist, talk show host, network that has made a public statement of regret. Please write about something that is more news worthy.

OK, now that is just silly.
First, I thought the “regret” over his children’s participation was superfluous and over the top as well. It was innocent and ordinary.
However, he IS a politician and in that regard no different than any other. Case and point:
GOOGLE RESULTS McCain and regret - Over 1.4 million hits Clinton and regret - Over 3 million hits Bush and regret - Over 6.2 million hits
Apparently, Obama is nor more regretful than any other modern-day politician.

First he says that families should be off limits in this campaign. Now he is using them for his own gain. He is transparent with no depth whatsoever. He say one thing and does the other when it serves him best. He has no experience and is learning on the fly- which is danerous since he would be the most powerful man in the world (scary).

Luke Boggs hit the ‘nail on the head’. Obama can recite a captivating title, but can’t write an article, thus he is always going back to correct or apologize. Big headlines, but no substantive material. He lacks experience, planning skills, and has so little background other than college and a very short time in Congress. I just hope more people realize how empty his speeches are. His Change is -from what? to what?? - He can’t back up any of his Big Ideas with sound solutions.

Luke Boggs is right on the money about Obama. He makes big speeches, but provides no real solutions to anything. His frequent regrets and going back to ‘clarify’ are indication of his lack of experience and sound ideas. He could never make it as a journalist, as he could only write a captivating title, but no article!

“Has many regrets”..poor man, he does not want anyone to know, what an empty suit he is. Voters need to know exactly what he means by “change”! He is the most leftist of anyone to run, he has zero experience, check out his voting record. OR his recent Bill in Senate (gLOBAL POVERTY BILL) would cost taxpayers 845 Billion, in which this money would go to currupt UN to distribute to “help with proverty in 3rd world countries. equals about 1800 a year per household! His change would put the “elite” in charge of all aspects of citizen’s life, would destroy U.S. economy, destroy Companies, huge regulations, taxes, eliminate choices for individuals, etc. Voters best examine what his “air” words really mean in effecting changing & eliminating choices. HE IS A SOCIALIST PLUS! Q, ? if he is a Christian, why did he chose to be swore in using the Muslin Book??????? IN A WORD, HE IS SCARY !

What’s the surprise? He got his kids on TV and made a good impression among some voters. Then, he said it was a bad idea and made a good impression among those voters who didn’t approve of it. The guy’s a politician… hasn’t anyone noticed? Ready for 4 years of this? You better be. He’ll be all things to all people… how refreshing!

or how about his Christianity…look what he says: more of the same…. n the Falsini interview he said he reads the Bible, although not as much as he wants to, and that prayer is a part of his daily life but not in the formal sense. “I think I have an ongoing conversation with God. Throughout the day I’m constantly asking myself questions about what I’m doing, why I am doing it,” he said. “The difficult thing about any religion, including Christianity, is that at some level there is a call to evangelize and proselytize. There’s the belief, certainly in some quarters, that if people haven’t embraced Jesus Christ as their personal savior, they’re going to hell,” he told Falsini. She said Obama did not believe that he or anyone else was going to hell and that he wasn’t sure he was going to heaven either. “What I believe in is that if I live my life as well as I can, that I will be rewarded. I don’t presume to have knowledge of what happens after I die. But I feel very strongly that whether the reward is in the here and now or in the hereafter, aligning myself to my faith and values is a good thing.”

I will never understand those who constantly blame Bush for 9/11. Do you recall the ‘93 WTC bombing, USS Cole attack, embassy bombings, etc.? These all happened under Clinton’s watch. And due to his inaction and lack of retaliation of each of these attacks, we then had 9/11. The 9/11 attack had been planned over the course of many years, well before Bush was elected. It is funny that people are quick to blame him for 9/11 but have nothing to say in regards to not having been attacked since. Obviously his retaliation approach has worked thus far. We need a like-minded candidate who is willing to fight terrorism and protect our country. And in this case, it is John McCain. We do not need Obama jetting all over the globe in order to create a dialogue with those dictators who are determined to destroy us. Those people do not deserve respect or a platform to spew their hate-filled rhetoric. Obama is naive to think that doing so will solve the threats that we face today.

He was a lawyer. I think that about sums it up. He is groomed to be articulate with words, that’s what lawyers do! They paint a picture to substantiate their case, so that they can convince a jury to vote their way. The same with Obama. He paints a picture in order to garner votes, but he has no plan to back up his case.

Do you ever ask yourself when Barry Obama speaks he never says anything of substance? When ever he talks it’s like listening to an anoited Idiot he truely makes no points every thing is generic and generalized without a word of substance, he drives me nuts his arogance an condisending un American rhetoric of nothing is baffling! I think the average IQ of Obama supporters is -65! When you say nothing of substance in a 20 minute Telepromptor speech these people clap and cheer and can’t remember anything of any substance he said! Will the real Obama please stand up? 100% empty hollow shell of a Muslim in Drag trying to be a Presidential with 00000 talent or substance! Do you know he is the lowest Democrat candidate in JULY polls, normaly the democrat is up 20-25%, even Kerry had a 20% lead by now in 04, Obama is even at best and droping daily! If Hillary doesn’t steal the super delegates it would suprise me, Obama looses 57 of 50 states Obama’s ebonic math, he gets 25-30% of the general election voters, I almost think Nader will get more votes than Obama! Boy he is not slick Willie, Clinton was devious creepy corrupt and a rapist and a few other things, but people loved him, not know, But Obama is not getting anyone to stand up cheer for him, every thing sticks to him he is not bright, talented, or charismatic he is a is way beyond an empty suite, he has zero substance and everone knows it including Hillary who is orginizing a million women march on Denver at the convention she will steal the election away from Barrack Hussien Barry plastic fantastic OSAMA OBAMA! JESSIE IS RIGHT OBAMA IS A WIMP AND HAS NO GRAVITOUS or balls ZERO!! I will ask you why is Hillary entire team including Greg Craig running Obamas campaign? May be to to destroy him because he truely the most moronic egocentric, pathetic, talentless, empty suite that should even be a used up car saleman, he would fail, prop him up pull his stings the puppet run by the Clinton puppet masters why? You people that are focusing on the google part of this are missing the point. The article is about questioning Obama’s judgement. There is a serious question here as time after time he shows poor judgement in his decisions, and he also lacks political experience. McCain at least has the experience. And this election has nothing to do with Bush, he is not running and McCain is certainly not a Bush follower. Choose based on which philosophy you want the country to follow. Obama is a socialist, McCain is not. If you want Socialism like a France for example then Obama is your man. Your choice

Just because it was a holiday puff piece doesn’t mean Obama, as a responsible parent, isn’t entitled to change his mind after seeing what all the attention did to his children. He doesn’t want his daughters to turn out like other child stars, and that’s sensible and responsible.
As for regretting the bitter thing? Pfft. He was right. People are bitter about how this country has been run [into the ground] the past 8 years.
As for wasted lives in Iraq? He had a point there too. We sent them over with not enough equipment, and with co-soldiers who are criminals with damaged morality, for a war built on finding WMDs that don’t exist. Sounds like a waste to me.
He only regrets them because people refuse to see the validity of what he says and does.
