Should Congress get involved with BCS?

A congressman from Hawaii wants the NCAA to reform the way it picks the national football champion- a method that some would argue robbed the Georgia Bulldogs of the title this year. Read the column here.

Should Congress get involved? Do we need a true playoff system? Were the Dogs robbed?

Congress has better things to do - like approving more offshore drilling, tapping the oil in ANWAR, allowing the building of new refineries for the first time in over 30 years - and building that offshore wind farm at Nantucket Sound that Teddy “The U-Boat Captain” Kennedy won’t support.

Lets see now…Ok let Congress get involved in college sports…and while we are at it let them legislate how kindergarden, elementry school, middle school and high school graduations should be held. The also need to weigh in on how long the grass should be on football and baseball fields. The Congressmen should set forth a menu on what can and cannot be served during halftime to the players and so on and so o and so on…..Geeeeez why shold lawmakers get involved in anything but legisation to cut size of government and protection of the citizens of this country. NO NO NO…not in this lifetime.

Wasn’t good ol’ Lynn Westmoreland in this group as well? Nothing better than a so-called conservative running his mouth about getting the feds involved with college sports. It seems certain ‘conservatives’ are actually that when it deals only with certain things.

By all means, they’ve done such a good job of keeping the IRS uncomplicated and efficient. I’m sure they’ve got just the thing to straighten out the BCS.

Hell NO! Get to work on energy, transportation, the economy, health care and ending the war! While you’re at it, pass legislation to develop jobs and new technologies (energy) and stop the giveaaways.

Congress involved? Sure why not. They’ve solved the deficit, we’re out of Iraq, and gas is back to only $1.50 per gallon. Right? I mean if they have fixed everything else, including the MLB steroid thing, go ahead and ‘fix’ the BCS. Give me a break.

Yes, we need a true play-off system. How can anyone say otherwise.

And UGA, put a cork in that bottle of whine. Win the SEC and then you have a legitimate reason to complain.

By David

They need to take care of the steroids in pro sports first.

Then read the Constitution … The right to life, liberty, and the pursuit of a fair college playoff system.

The government does very few things well, so why does anyone turn to them when things need fixin’?

Congress needs to get to work for the people! That means show up for work 5 days’s a week and balance the budget! I say for every vote missed that they lose pay! If they don’t balance the budget then they don’t get paid. If my company did not have a balanced budget I would not get a pay check. Make them play by the same rules, and also force them to retire at 65!

It’ll never happen

When the u.s. congress gets involved in any civilian activity there is ususally a crime. Or some issue that effect the masses. In h.s. or collegate sports most decision making activity is left for each state to decide. Thats called keeping it simple. People have to learn the real meaning of responsibility, its important existentually. Its really up to us once we understand how government works. We are a government of the people. If our elected officials, in Washington,DC, can keep up with the business of government(state and foreign) without a hitch, we ought to be happy. If you only knew the bulk amount of paper work, inquires, new legislation, human rights issues, complaints from foreign governments or US citizens. Then you would better understand why. It is vertually impossible to have this congress loaded down with the business of state and local government. Its mail by the box car by the day in DC. Take my word for it. Getting involved with college and h.s sport squabbles? That will never happen. Thank you AJC for allowing the general public an opportunity to comment and respond to issues of communal importance. People want to know. Learning can be fun. Its exciting to see everyone getting involved in a civil manner. Reading is fundemental. We love it. MCR

ABSOLUTELY. I think it is very important that our elected government spends their time on such globally important issues as College Football and Steroids in MLB. While they are at it, perhaps they could investigate who shot JR, why water flows down the drain in the opposite direction in the southern hemisphere, and whether or not the moon is, in fact, made of cheese.

Yes! D-I college football is being held hostage by the Commissioner of the Big 11 and it will not change until Congress intercedes. The NCAA will never do the right thing by stepping in and establishing a legitimate playoff. Someone has to order that gang of criminals to change things. Who else has the authority but Congress?

By RealityKing

April 30, 2008 11:59 AM | Link to this

Why?

What makes you think our pitiful 110th liberal Congress could resolve the BCS when they can’t even get a budget out of committee? Much less anything else..

By Hils

April 30, 2008 12:29 PM | Link to this

Absolutely Congress should get involved and redress the inequity of the BCS system. It’s utterly unfair that schools like Agnes Scott and Kennesaw are left out of BCS and the money that flows to “big football” schools. We need more fairness than we have now and Congress is our only hope!

By gwarfan

If you do not like the bowl series then you need to stop watching them, stop going to them, and let the NCAA know you hate in in writing. The demand is there for the bowls and until that starts to dry up some why should they change it.

Hmmm…let’s see.

The BCS, however flawed it is, makes millions a year for it’s member institutions.

The US government loses billions a year running the country.

I would think the US government has their own fires to tend with much more serious repercussions than possibly annointing a disputed national champion!

By xtimastah

April 30, 2008 1:24 PM | Link to this

People need to quit whining. Besides the concrete fact that UGA didn’t deserve to be in the national championship game, they should not be wanting this kind of crap either. The best thing about college football besides the players not being paid is the fact that there isn’t a playoff. Do you think last year would have been as fun with all the upsets and closs losses? I mean look at the NFL- you can lose 8 games and still have a shot at the superbowl. It’s retarded.

Make every game count by rating teams. That was UGA’s problem… they got blown out by Tennessee and lost to SCar and couldn’t even win their division. Get over it. Who care’s how “hot” you were at the end of the season? Can you imagine if UGA won the east and all the sudden Florida jumped over them because they were the “hot” team? You guys wouldn’t stand for it. UGA fans are so full of it and hypocrtical.

I agree that the BCS post season ahould be revamped. However, Those egotistical, power hungry, vote buying, and headline seeking representations of some of the worst examples of elected officials in the USA should be offered only the sign of the middle finger if they take any steps beyond what has occurred to date!!

Absolutely. Apparently they have plenty of spare time on their hands, what with abdicating their authority to responsible government.

Oh yeah, let’s give them time off without pay so they can persue this activity, and with the money saved, we can get more tax cuts!

Charles,

Thanks for telling me something I already know. What does that matter when so-called conservative Westmoreland is right there with him? Obviously partisanship does not matter. What does matter is hypocrisy when a conservative wants to use federal power and influence over college sports ranking systems. Westmoreland needs to focus his time more on learning the 10 Commandments.

Once Congress completes the impeachment of George W Bush and the arrest of Dick Cheney, well then Congress can do anything they want. But of course, getting involved in a false college football “championship” is really nothing they should bother with. If the NCAA can’t figure out that the BCS is a totally bogus way to choose a “champion” then just leave it. All the other college divisions have playoffs, but the poor poor Division 1A teams just can’t sacrifice those incredibly gifted scholar athletes from missing study and test time. Boo hoo.

Congress has no business being involved in the BCS. That is a ridiculous waste of their time and is not an issue that the government should have its nose in. And UGA wasn’t robbed of anything. Its just as ridiculous to suggest that.
