Bush booed at Braves opener: Appropriate?
The Atlanta Journal-Constitution
During the ESPN broadcast of President Bush’s throwing the first pitch at the Sunday night’s Braves opener at the new Washington, D.C., Nationals stadium, it sounded like there were quite a few boos.
Was it appropriate to give the president a Bronx cheer?

Face it, this president is supported only by a small minority of dead-enders. His poll numbers have been lower than Richard Nixon’s were after Watergate.
Sure it was appropriate. With issues like security perimeters, identity checks, hand-picked yes-men, and demands of loyalty oaths creating a “bubble” of protection around him, it’s seldom that he gets even an inkling of what the hoi pelloi actually think of him. Finally, the people got to speak.
One wonders if he actually heard them though.

Sorry. He is the President… not God, not even a minor deity or of royal blood. Simply a President. But this President has protected himself from any sort of dissent. In fact it is impossible to protest against this man because he hand picks audiences, has local police move protesters far away from the cameras trained on his events, and he does not listen to the American people even after they voted his Republican congress out of office. So yeah… let them boo. In fact boo loudly. This man deserves it. He has erased our rights and made us a weak and hated nation in the eyes of the world.

While I do not defend booing the president because I think it is low class, I might want to remind West Cobb of where the Mason Dixon line is located. It is the border of Maryland and Pennsylvania. Being from Baltimore, I feel the need to defend the lovely people of the mid-atlantic region who are unfairly being judged based on a few low class individuals who confuse sports with politics.

“Confused sports with politics”? Are you serious? He is the PRESIDENT… not a private citizen. He politicized the event by showing up and being announced as the sitting President of the United States. I am glad they booed him. He needs to get his head out of his a** and listen to the American people… not snub his nose at them and act like their opinion on the future of their country does not matter to him and his cronies.

Yes confused. If you knew anything about baseball then you would know that it is tradition for the sitting President to throw out the first pitch. It is a celebration of the “American Pastime” and our freedom to enjoy it. I did not see the President make one statement about political issues on the field and for that matter when he sat in the booth. This is the problem today. People are so busy being partisan about every single sentence and moment in their life that they can’t just enjoy a baseball game for what it is…A BASEBALL GAME. Relax America and enjoy your own life.

One should NOT boo out of respect for the Office he holds. One can think what they like about the man, but one should respect the office. When one boos they show disrespect for the office regardless of what they think of the man. Then again, those that want it all for nothing can’t grasp such a concept. Sad world, sadder for the USA.

Hey Bmore Boy, I am sure the interstate that you rode your soory butt in on, runs north AND south! Hit it looser if you don’t like it here. If we cannot seem to get separation of church and state correct, how do you suppose that baseball and politics be parted. The short of the long is that this ridiculous man that parades as president is at best a diety in his own mind. Just like all of the other freedoms that we have in this country (that he hasn’t stripped away by re-writing the constitution) gives us the right to boo or cheer if we want to. They apparently chose to boo. Regardless of partison politics, you cannot choose WHEN we have the freedom of speech and when we don’t. Head north, Clown!

Bmore boy… if YOU knew anything about baseball, then you would know that in 1951 Truman was booed so loudly, the Air Force band tried to drown out the dissension by playing Hail to the Chief very loudly. And when Nixon threw out pitches the boos were just as loud.
But I guess in the year 2008, dissension is no longer allowed.

Buzzer, I agree with your assesment, however if HE decided to respect the office perhaps others could. With all of our negative conclusions of country such as France.., they at least get politics right. Elected officials work for us, not the other way around. Americans have through history respected the office of the presidency, as you are correct, the office is bigger than the man holding it. However in the current administration this is reversed as bush (little b) has placed himself clearly above the office. America can still be the best country in the world if we remember what makes it great. The Sopranos was tv show, not an expose’ on how to run a country.

He is still shredding the Constitution, ignoring the will of the people, killing thousands and thousands in an illegal war, wasting the treasury and future of the country, lying to us daily, robbing the poor and enriching the rich, etc., etc., etc…. Darn right he should have been booed…vigorously, loudly, and repeatedly. Worst President ever. Boo! Boo! Boo!

Hey James….please put the kool-aid down! It’s a trick, don’t drink anymore. The mothership is not coming! Bush nor his cronies, or their descendants have prevented any attacks. Lest you forget that none have lifted a musket to protect this country. This admin looks at security in the terms of a skittles bag, as a rainbow of colors. Making the orange and red skittles dangerous…..It is the men and women who support this country through military engagement that provide security against intruders. PERIOD. As I remember the only attacks post-9/11 that the current admin take credit for are the ones that they fabricate in order to distract the voting public and citizens from the real issues at hand. You really should take in more news that the 10-second sound bites featured on Fox-Noise, I mean news. Reading really is fundimental. And before you go there, I am neither republican or democrat at this point as I cannot discern a difference. Similar to the way that you are unable to spot a phony when it is presented to you.

How has Bush kept this country safe? Less than 1% of flights have air marshals aboard… remember how they were supposed to keep planes out of the hands of terrorists? Under this administration, nothing has been done to secure our ports… our borders… our basic infrastructure. Not to mention that Bush and his friends have done nothing to stabilize the oil industry… Remember how all that Iraqi oil was going to pay for his war? So uh yeah… what were you saying about him keeping us safe for 6 years? The truth is we are safe because no one has attacked us… not because we have a strong president.

I see no reason why he shouldn’t be booed at a baseball game. It certainly is not a matter of State. It’s the President’s Day Out. Period.
In truth, we should collectively boo most every Congressman and -woman, the entire executive branch, and most of our fellow countrymen, who continue to vote idiots into office and then wonder why nothing ever changes.

Not al all. People should have respect for the office of the president whether you like the persons policies or not. There is a thing called having commom decency or it used to be. I don’t agree with the president but if I were to meet him it would still be nice to meet you mr. president. It seems people have lost the skill to be able to respectfully disagree with a person and seperate not liking someone’s view from not liking the person.Sometimes the president is like a NFL QB. It’s not surprising to those of us who know and understand what’s happening in this world that the President was booed by the short-attention-span, American-Idol-obssessed, gee-which-way-is-the-wind-blowing-TODAY? crowd. I agree that Bush is not royalty and is not entitled to respect. Personally, I’d refuse to shake his hand. The only ones defending him are the 30%ers.
It is bad manners to boo anyone at anytime for anything. If you disagree, then simply do nothing. Less is more in this case.
While Bush has lower ratings than Nixon, people have to accept their role in re-electing him. I never voted for Bush once because I could see he was just an empty suit. McCain is an empty suit too. He is too ideologically tied to the Rethuglicon thinking (uberrich good - need more tax cuts, dirt poor servants - keep them in their place).
When you vote Rethuglicon, you vote against your own best interests. And the 30%ers that support Bush are living proof.

How are the people supposed to vent their frustration at Bush? He and his administration have continuously stated that they don’t care what we (The People) think. Bush isolates himself in a bubble of praise from his cronies and ideological hanger-ons. It is indeed disrespectful to boo.
But I can’t quite bring myself to stick up for this clown.
A moment of booing is a mere drop in the bucket compared to the seven years of disrespect he has shown - to other world leaders (nice backrub, Merkel), to citizens of the USA & even the Constitution itself.
I think he can handle a moment of booing, tacky gesture though it may be.

This shouldn’t be about respect for the office, as much as it is free speech. I was delighted that the man who so often attends only staged appearances actually heard what 70% disapproval sounds like. Taliking about respect for office is a comment I expect to hear from the same people who angrily denounced Sheehan for costing American lives when it should be clear to anyone that the proximate cause for the 4000 dead was soundly, and deservedly, booed last night!

I think Bush will likely go down as one of the worst presidents in U.S. history. His middle initial should really be ‘F’. He’s left this country in pitiful economic and fiscal shape, we’ve overextended our military by trying to fight two wars at once and have left our own homeland largely unprotected, and we have absolutely no energy policy at a time when we sorely need one. Anyone who still can’t see that the Emperor Has No Clothes (or even a brain, for that matter) probably wouldn’t score 1000 on the post-1995 SAT.
That said, the office of the presidency does still stand for something bigger than the man occupying the seat, and booing a sitting U.S. president seems quite tacky to me. Of course, as a Southerner, I also think it’s rude to boo the other team on a regular basis.

What would Reagan do? I guess Reagan would do what Reagan did in Lebanon - gather up all the Marines and get them the heck out of there…
(Did someone just say “cut and run”?)
If only the mythology of Reagan matched the Reagan of history… and if only people would crave information as much as they craved a good soundbyte.
PS, not sure what these other hypothetical presidents would have done on September 12th, but I’m pretty sure they wouldn’t have abandoned their pursuit of bin Laden in order to invade a country that had nothing to do with the attack…

They should have tossed pretzels at him in hopes that one got lodged. When else will this president ever be held accountable to the public?? Boo away, my friends.

Blind Homer, As in staged appearances do you mean like the ones Hillary goes to with planted questions from fake audience members? Or, like Obama going to an all black racist church? Those 4000 dead would be ashamed of you. Not Bush. So I guess that 600,000 dead soldiers should be ashamed of FDR. Or 58,226 dead vietnam soldiers being ashamed of Kennedy? Your precious Obama and Hillary will not bring the troops home. They know as well as all the stupid democrats that defeat is not an option. So you can take your antiwar crap and shove it up your anus.

Patrice, you ever heard the word “classified”. What has he done? What hasn’t he done? This guy was a lame duck since he “stole” the election in 2000. He could walk on water and you libs would find fault. Ps. Mr Barrack “good judgement” Obama didn’t get it right from day one cause HE WASN’T THERE ON DAY ONE!! You can say anything when there is nothing to lose!

This man has done more to ruin this country than any terrorist from the middle east. I think a few boos are warranted and quite polite, considering what he has done to us.

Rusty - It’s not about Sep. 12, 2001 for most of us. It’s six and a half years, 4000 lives, a trillion dollars plus, Hussein long since hung and Obama still nowhere to be found later that bothers us.

Sane Jane, I think you are sure what these other hypothetical Presidents would have done so don’t play dumb.”They counted on America to be passive, They counted wrong.” You have a selected memory. He single handedly broke the Soviet Union,he answered Libya terrorism with a trip back to the stone age. I gues we just need to sit down with these animals and have a good ol’ fashioned Obama style Kumbaya fest.

I’VE SAID BEFORE AND I’LL SAY IT AGAIN. I HAVE ALWAYS BEEN BROUGHT UP TO RESPECT THE PRESIDENT OF THE UNITED STATES, NO MATTER WHICH PARTY THEY ARE FROM OR HOW WELL THEY HAVE REPRESENTED THE COUNTRY. AMERICANS SHOULD RESPECT OUR PRESIDENT NO MATTER WHAT. I THINK IT WAS UNAPPROPRIATE AT THE GAMES OR ANYWHERE ELSE. JUST IMAGINE THE OUTLOOK WE ARE GIVING THE FOREIGN COUNTRIES, US BOOING OUR OWN PRESIDENT. BUT HEY, THAT’S IS WHAT OUR COUNTRY HAS TURNED INTO AND I CAN ONLY BLAME IT ON ONE THING….MAYBE 2

Truth - I won’t comment on WWII, but I lived through Nam. Perhaps, like Westmoreland, you will go to your grave swearing Nam did stop the dominoes from falling but from where I sit that was 58,226 of my friends, relatives and peers wasted for nothing! I’ll grant you the jury is still out on Iraq, could be 100 years or more before we see that stable democracy and the wisdom of Bush/Cheney. But I don’t think we ever will, I think it looks to me like another huge waste of lives and money. Fighting for your country is not a waste, as I will be proud to demonstrate as soon as we are invaded. But if you think history has shown Nam to be anything more than a huge mistake and waste, you’re not being patriotic, you’re being stupid.

For those of you who don’t remember your history, the DEMORCRAT President Johnson (largely responsible for the Vietnam War) made a speech in May of 1968 saying he had decided to bring the troops home. Over half, I Repeat OVER HALF, of the 58,000 who died in that war died AFTER that speech. That was criminal and he was never held to account. Anything Bush has done pales in comparison to that debacle.

Yes he deserves to be booed. This was his only apperance in which his audience wasn’t hand picked, such as an Army base or VFW club or some GOP fund raiser. For once he needs to get out and talk to common folks that have not been screened by the Secret Service. 2008 the end of the mistake.

Absolutely not okay to boo him. He’s the president of the United States. He’s driving the car, and has a better view than the rest of us backseat drivers. Those who knock him, make their political decisions like “Monday Night quarterbacks”, basing their decisions from what some newscaster said.

Tommy, Bitter? No, just pointing out the stupidity in some of these people on the blog. A lot of these people blame lifes problems on other people. Blaming the president for the deaths of soldiers is very stupid. Islamic fascists killed the soldiers and not Bush. The other day Owl Gore said that people who don’t believe in global warming are the same people who believe the moon landing was staged. Liberals are deranged freaks who drink the kool aid of people like Owl Gore. Funny thing is, global warming is a scam. Even the founder of the Weather Channel is suing him. Democrats can’t be trusted with anything. I love how Hillary and Osama are destroying the democrat party. Keep it up moon bats. It’s fun watching your party evaporate.

So many Americans confuse freedom of speech with “permission” to act just as classless as possible, hmmm… maybe Mom was right, “if you can’t say something nice, don’t say anthing at all..” NOT A BAD POLICY compared to showing your a%%es and looking like the ill-mannered morons that you very well may be. Have any of you vocal types ever thought that nobody CARES what you think? There’s a remote possibility that your opinions just don’t matter: to W, or anybody else. Now, that makes you angry, doesn’t it?

Blind Homer, You totally missed my point. My point was, democrats such as yourself blame republicans for everything. Democrats have gotten us in terrible situations. Jimmy Carter is the reason Iran is run by a nut job. Clinton DID NOTHING to combat terrorism. His administration is the reason we were bombed on 911. Kennedy got us in to Vietnam and the dems didn’t have the balls to win it. Countries such as China are watching us. They are waiting for the right moment to invade. Yes, Bush has made terrible mistakes and has allowed more government to have power. Big problem. He is not conservative. He’s done nothing about the border or spending. Government is not the answer to the economy.

For those of you that continue to ps & moan and b*h & gripe I have one question for you- What are YOU doing within your own spheres of influence to change things for the better? Stop blaming one person (President Bush), take a good look in the mirror, get of your butt, and make a positive change in the world, starting with you.
Take a look at pictures of ANY president at the start of their term and again at the end of their term, and see how the stress of the job ages them. Would you change places with them? I doubt it. But we live in a country where we CAN (and often do) criticize every move a president makes, where in other parts of the world people are thrown in jail or executed for speaking critically of the government or having thoughts that are contrary to the dogma the current regime is espousing.
Personally, I’m not thrilled with any of the three possible future presidential candidates, and realistically we can’t change a whole lot of what goes on in D.C., but we CAN sure determine what goes on near us, and we usually only get one chance. So smarten the hell up!!
