You be the political analyst
The Atlanta Journal-Constitution
While the political pundits are still predicting a fight to the finish over “super delegates” for the Democratic presidential nomination, John McCain seems fairly certain Barrack Obama’s got it.
McCain further cemented his claim on the GOP presidential nomination with a win in Wisconsin’s primary Tuesday, and immediately targeted the freshman Senator from Illinois who was projected to prevail in the state’s Democratic primary. Taking a page from Hillary Clinton’s critiques on Obama, McCain promised to deliver far more than just an “eloquent but empty call for change” and the “confused leadership of an inexperienced candidate.”
So, has McCain got it right, or is this a political ploy to make Democrats think again and tilt toward Clinton? Could it be McCain would rather face the New York senator?
You be the political analyst. What’s going on here?

Does not matter. We will never have a thug/afro-american president in this country. McCain will take care of this. Keep in mind REPUBLICANS are voting for Obama Bin Laden because we know he will get killed by McCain!

If McCain trys the same tactics on Obama as Hillary Clinton, he too will be crushed. The Republican GOP can be counted on to mount a full and vicious campaign to destroy Obama, because that is what they do. It has worked in the past, but it won’t work on Obama, the next President of the U. S. I am a McCain supporter and I realize there is a huge desire for change in this country. I will vote for McCain, but my vote will be meaningless.

It’s about time Bill Richardson endorses Barack and Bill should become his VP. Bill has way more experience than John Edwards, and Barack will need some guidance in the White House. Show your support at www.barackandbill.com

If Hillary were a civil person who cared about the Democratic party and the country, she’d admit defeat and wish Obama the best. It’s over.
But Hillary would never do that. We’ve seen she’ll do anything, say anything, and be anything if it means winning the primary. So let’s get ready for more trash talk, more negativity, and more Bill unleashed.

Makes sense McCain would attack Barack, because Barack is his greatest fear. The opposition to Hillary amongst majority of democrats will revolt if Hillary wins via Superdelegates. Many of which will throw their vote towards McCain in order for the Democratic Party to take serious note.

Difficult to see how Clinton bounces back from another defeat and the roll of momentum into Ohio and Texas. If she loses those contests (and she’s already lost her leads there) will she step aside gracefully? Or will she confirm so many of the criticisms about her?
I won’t conjecture what she’ll do, but it will be illuminating.

I’m a Hillary fan, but it looks like I’ll be voting Republican this year for the first time. Obama Hussein Barack is way to liberal for me. His type of change is not wrong for America, especially in terms of foreign policy. McCain is actually a moderate who I could vote for without holding my nose. Thank you Repubs for not nmoninating Mitt Romney and presenting me with a republican I can actually vote for for once.

As usual, the Democratic party is providing theatrics for the presidential election. You would have thought at such a crucial period, they’d put their best candidate forward and that happens to be Hillary Clinton (not that she’s my favorite). It’s amazing how the Democratic party complained about George Bush being a “novice” politician but we’re attempting to support a “novice” senator for the most important job in the U.S. It seems that the Democratic party again has no defined plan as usual for the presidency and again we will see defeat come November. Barack Obama is a good politician who gave a great speech at the last Democratic convention, but has no real experience when you talk about being the President of the U.S. and just because you’re a past President of the Harvard Review doesn’t count. In reading many of these responses regarding Senator Obama, it’s painful that many Americans cannot see past race or gender and it’s proof positive change will not likely occur in November or at least the one some of us hope for. Look at the last election with George Bush. How many jobs were lost, tax cuts given to his “established base”, jobs sent overseas, the war, etc. and still he got a second term. The mindset of Americans cannot be changed in one year. It will take time. Let’s be honest, there’s a reason why the White House is called and named the White House. John McCain has an established political track record (it may not be one we like) and he’s a decorated war veteran and Barack Obama and Hillary Clinton have no chance against that. It would be wonderful to see either a female or African-American as president but the current racial state of the U.S. would not support this, especially a non-white President. When you have a historically low turnout for voting by Democrats and a high turnout for Republicans, add to that the infamous electoral college and sum up the fact that the popular vote doesn’t previal, who do you think will win the Presidency? That’s right, our new Chief Executive Officer is John McCain. I just hope he has enough common sense not to put Mike Huckabee on his ticket as V.P. My personal feeling is I’m very concerned about the safety, amongst other things, of Americans given what has happened with President Bush and when I compare Senators Obama and Clinto to John McCain, it’s making me seriously consider voting Republican this election (unfortunately, I’m hearing this opinion echoed by many Democrats). The only way it seems it’s possible for a Democratic to win this election is if the winner in the nomination puts the loser on their ticket as Vice President.

It is amazing to see someone using the term thug in reference to Barack Obama. The definition of thug is a cruel or vicious ruffian, robber or murderer. That is not Barack but infact President Bush and the other thugs that have for so longed robbed others and have not been penalized. Prejudice is still very much alive in this country and it is definitely shown here. The sad thing is those who are afraid of Senator Obama’s intelligence and the fear of him moving the country forward. Don’t worry your forefathers had the same problem as African Americans began to invent things that are used in today’s society. Given the opportunity to learn to read after slavery you people became afraid of our superior knowledge and quick understanding. Face it this country wants and deserves a change.

Why do you have to use the word THUG with African American? Obviously a racist sterotype comment. It is so sad to be in the year 2008 and people still have that type of mentality. It is one thing to have a intelligent political comment or political dislike ofr the man, but is it really needed to add THUG and then associate the word with african americans?????

Hillary is toast. It’s time for Don Meredith to sing “Turn out the lights, the party’s over…” This is not only an overwhelming rejection of her, it’s a complete repudiation of her dress-swabbing husband as well. Slick got away with it a few years back. Well, good for him, but people do not forget. This is America’s chance to get even. Hillary must be thinking, “Gee thanks, Bill, your ruined Gore’s chances, and now you’re doing the same to me.” Revenge is sweet. We’re politically finished with anything named Clinton on a national level.

The ignorant voters in the Democratic Party continue to express their fascination with the latest American Idol, Sen. Obama. They’re the same democrats who gave us George McGovern, Mike Dukakis, and Ted Kennedy. The average primary voter spends maybe 10 seconds per primary figuring out who has the best soundbite or whitest smile. It’s pathetic. After all the pride that the guilt ridden Democrats feel about having nominated the first black for President, they will end up with nothing, as President McCain is sworn in. Perhaps Hillary will be around to clean up the mess they make as they self-destruct (as usual). The American people deserve just what they get. After all, this is a democracy and you don’t have to have a bit of sense to cast a vote

Senator Clinton still has a slim chance in Ohio, Texas, and Pennsylvania, but it is becoming more apparent that Senator Obama has the energy and momentum on his side. Senator McCain probably could have won the 2000 election as an independent, but he’s had to make too many concessions to the Christian Coalition branch of the Republican base to have the cross-over appeal he once had. The question is whether Senator Obama’s politics will be seen as too liberal in a general election. Senator Clinton has been positioning herself for a general election for a number of years, taking moderate to conservative positions in areas that democrats are often vulnerable, such as national security. Senator Obama has often avoided taking specific positions, but he will likely have to clarify his positions during a general election. Either race, McCain vs. Obama or McCain vs. Clinton makes for an interesting matchup. Neither Clinton nor Obama are the ‘safest’ candidate the dems could have chosen. McCain, however, is the ‘safe’ republican candidate and their only chance to win.

To Chris who doesn’t understand how a candidate can win the primaries but not the election, remember a candidate named John Kerry. Wanted change and doing what’s necessary for change are two different things. People have a tendency to say one thing, but you never know what they do once they get behind that curtain on election day. It’s sad to hear white democrats who are supposed to be liberals say “I’m voting Republican if Obama wins the nomination.” That let’s you know we really haven’t made too much headway with regards to racism.

Jeff - nice shout out to animal house, but alas - there will be no bluto for clinton to say, was it over when the germans bombed pearl harbor? My prediction - hillary isn’t going to win TX or OH by a large margin to change pledged delegates. If she doesn’t win both TX and OH there will be mounting calls for her to pull out of the race… she’ll be on thin ice and i don’t think she can take that pressure until april and Pennsylvania. That said, the way the democrats lose the general election this year is if 68 chicago occurs in 08 denver. If Hillary continues to lose and doesn’t drop out of the race, she will lead to deep divisions in the party.

Hey Monica - I would just caution you when talking about race and motivations. Just when I thought that we were turning the curve with our race relations, racism rears it’s ugly head again. America will let you know just what they think of you if you’re not “like” the majority. Racism is not something you’re born with, it’s taught.
As far as this presidential race, I support Barack Obama because of his views and ideas. However, I DO NOT have that much hatred in me that if Hillary Clinton gets the nomination, I will vote Republican. I may not agree with everything she say but I agree with her a lot more than I do John McCain.

Hillary Clinton is not dividing the Democratic Party because it’s never been been nor displayed a united front. The biggest problem plaguing the party is that we have no concrete plan. Neither candidates economic proposals are solid. “How can you provide universal healthcare without raising taxes?” You’ve given me the choice of an eloquent senator with empty promises (Obama), a mediocre senator with a questionable past who half-addresses the issues (Clinton) and a senator with a defined political record (McCain). I don’t care if you’re Democrat, Republican, Libertarian, Independant, Progressive, etc. There’s no denying that McCain is the best given who’s been presented.

No, McCain is not the best of the three. His plan consists of continuing a failed policy and making things worse. How is that “better”?
His defined record is that of a corrupt, corporate-owned compromiser. How is that “better”?
It’s fun to CLAIM that Obama and Clinton have no specific plans, but ultimately it’s another dodge from an increasingly desperate right wing who see power slipping through their fingers.
It’s great to see America back on track to liberalism and greatness! Wheee!

During every presidential election I have always tried to research each candidate on my own so that I can make a personal decision on who is best suited to run our country. I don’t think anyone will disagree that if you dig deep enough you will always find something troubling about any of the potential Presidents. This year is no exception, but I did find some information regarding Barack Obama that was particularly disturbing. Barack has been a member of the Trinity United Church of Christ for many years. (http://www.tucc.org/about.htm) While I personally want a President that is a Christian, I absolutely do not want one whose faith dictates that they be “true to our native land” when the land in question is not even our own country. Below is a direct quote from Barack’s church:
“We are a congregation which is Unashamedly Black and Unapologetically Christian… Our roots in the Black religious experience and tradition are deep, lasting and permanent. We are an African people, and remain “true to our native land,” the mother continent, the cradle of civilization.”
As an American, I take offense to almost every word written above and it has nothing to do with the color of one’s skin. As a matter of fact it’s the complete opposite. As a society we claim we want all people treated equally and that every American should equally reap the benefits of being a citizen. How are we ever going to achieve this if some groups continue to stir the pot up and demand to be seen as a separate? Does Barack and his fellow church members consider their selves to be African or Americans? It’s one thing to say that you are an American with a African heritage. It’s quite another to say that you are an “African people.” If we insist on being viewed as different then we shouldn’t be shocked when we are treated different. (I’m getting off the subject here but I really wish people would stop saying they are African American, Mexican American, Italian American, etc. Either your an American or not! If I want to have a conversation about your family’s heritage I’ll ask you.)
What does “Unashamedly Black” mean anyway? I read this and the first thing I think of is a person with a major chip on their shoulder! It would be interesting to see how fast the media would be running stories in the press if they found out that Senator McCain’s church proudly proclaimed that they were Unashamedly White! You and I know very well that accusations of racism would quickly arise and rightfully so. When any person or group sees them self first as a color and second as an American I think they’ve got it backwards and I certainly would not want someone of this mentality running our country.
Rightly or wrongly, when I went to the web site of Barack’s church, I sensed they were a group of people that are still caught up in the past and determined to been seen by others as Africans living in the United States. If you go to their web site you can decide for yourself but the overwhelming feeling that I felt from them was bitterness. I personally don’t want a President who buys into this philosophy. It would be foolish to think that any President did not some times make decisions that impacted our country, based partly on their religious beliefs. If Mr. Obama becomes President will he really be able to unite our country when he and his fellow church members feel the way they do? I don’t think so.
On the surface I admire how polished Barack Obama is but I now wonder what is going on behind that cool exterior? I don’t think I want to find out.

John: And in the interests of full understanding of this alleged “issue” (really an e-mail smear campaign), people should also read the Urban Legends and Snopes.com debunking of this hysteria:
http://urbanlegends.about.com/od/government/a/obama_church.htm
http://www.snopes.com/politics/obama/church.asp
The “he’s a covert Muslim!” campaign flopped (although some idiots still buy into it), so now they’re onto claiming that Obama is “influenced” by various unsavory forces—from a communist poet in his childhood to an Evil Black Church.
In a way, it’s encouraging to see the Obama-haters having to resort to this… it shows that they haven’t found anything of SUBSTANCE to attack him on.

Copyleft,
Your own link to urban legends confirms that he has belonged to this church:
“It is true that Barack Obama belongs to Chicago’s Trinity United Church of Christ, which he joined in the early 1980s.”
I never said, nor do I believe, that he is a muslim. What I did say is that he belongs to a Church that has some screwed up views. It is so easy for people to make this into a race issue when it has nothing to do with it. The bottom line is that I have to wonder about a person who belongs to a church that is loyal to Africa first and America second. If Obama and his Church feel that strongly about Africa my advice to him and his fellow Church members to to relocate to Africa so that they can live in what they profess to be the “Mother Land”. Re-read the link carefully and draw your own conclusion: http://www.tucc.org/about.htm

I totally agree with John Taylor’s comments. Most Americans (other than native American Indians), are descendants of another country, Ireland, England, Italy, Greece, etc. I do not hear them calling themselves Irish Americans etc., or if we do use our county of origin we are Americans first. I was surprised to hear the language used in Obama’s church and although I consider myself a tolerant and non-racist person, I do not like the idea of members of a church calling themselves Unashamebly black (or white if that applied). I truly hope Obama is not our next President as I think he is more show than substance.

Anyone know his positions on anything (besides the very old cliche of “making the Bush tax cuts permanent” and “Stay the course”)??
LAughable, totally laugable. And before one speaks of Barack not having any experience, they should probably refer to his stint in the IL senate before becoming a US Senator and the hundreds of bills he sponsored between there and Washington.

And I guess it doesn’t hurt that he’s not fat and bald. I hate to sound shallow but he’s candy for the EYES!!!:-)

Copyleft,
Your first response indicated that Obama was not a Muslim when I never said, or indicated that. Your second response said, “Of course he belongs to that church, John. The error is in thinking that there’s some sort of “dangerous extremism” to having a black church.” Once again, you avoided answering the questions that my original posting raised. I don’t care if a candidate belongs to a white, black, purple or orange church. What I care about is when a person’s church pledges their loyalty to another country and calls themselves an “African” people and not an “American” people. You can twist my words anyway you want but the fact remains I don’t want an “African”, or an “Italian”, or a “Mexican” or a “Chinese” person running MY country. I want someone who is “Unabashedly” American who claims our country as his or hers motherland. His heritage, color and where his family came from doesn’t mean squat to me.

John, I’m just pointing out that you’re buying into a shallow smear campaign. “Round up everyone Obama has ever known, and see if they’ve ever said or done anything we can distort” is the right-wing media’s current marching orders.
The fallout has been as predictably pathetic as you’d expect from opposition research… a lot of distortion and speculation, a lot of “what this REALLY means” misinterpretation, and a lot of jingoistic hysteria.
Fact: Obama belongs to a black church that is proud of its identity and ties to Africa. How would this be shocking if, say, McCain belonged to an Irish Catholic church that strongly identified with the Irish community and its Ireland heritage?
Answer: Non-issue. It never WAS an issue, but the talk-radio nuts are desperately trying to turn it into one. Their “He’s a Muslim” tactic failed, and their “he’s a Black Panther” tactic is going to fail too. They have nothing to work with, and America’s not listening to them any more.

Copyleft, I respectfully disagree and I sincerely do me respectfully. I do not hate Obama and I don’t think that he is a bad person. With that said, I do have concerns regarding a President belonging to that type of Church. To answer your question if Senator Mccain belonged to a church that proclaimed they were:
“We are a congregation which is Unashamedly White and Unapologetically Christian… Our roots in the White religious experience and tradition are deep, lasting and permanent. We are an Irish people, and remain “true to our native land,” the mother continent, the cradle of civilization.”
I would never in a million years vote for Senator Mccain. Like I said before I have posted my opinion based on his Church web site that he has belonged to for over 20 years. That is a fact that you and no one else can deny. Each reader can go to the web site and decide for themself what it means: http://www.tucc.org/about.htm

Google Larry Sinclair or search his name on Youtube. He tells of his homosexual drug tryst with Barack Obama. The mainstream media refuses to discuss this because it will derail their plans to put a colored man in office

To all of you who talk about United Church of Christ, I have visited this church; my relative was married there. I am a Chrisitan and yes I am Black. I did not see any of this type of stuff taught at this church.
And to be totally honest, all that you will really see is a bunch of people (especially the large choir) that wears colorful AfroCentric attire (head dresses, garb etc). They teach from the same NKJV/NIV/KJV Bible that my church does. The preaching was not a “Black Power” message. They simply embrace our African roots. My understanding is that the church supports many missions and projects in Africa.
Wake up and stop buying all this garbage rhetoric. I know so many of you would like to make Barack out to be some radical underground thug. I’m laughing because it’s all so silly.. say something enough and it will become truth. That crap is old and the american people are sick of it. People aren’t stupid. Experience? 8 yrs of George Bush who had ZERO foreign policy experience and TWO failed businesses!! Yet 8 years in state Senate and a term in the US Senate counts for nothing???
What hypocrites you are. Keep hating though. Obama shows his strength. He is withstanding attacks from a former President and his wife AND and entire but rather broken Republican party. YET… he stil shines. You can’t touch him. Because he is in fact FOR ALL, not just Black people.
GONE AHEAD OBAMA, they CANNOT stop you brother!!

It’s really sad here to see how far we haven’t come in Georgia. This race for presidency is truly pulling the truth out of many of you.
We golf and dine with each other but the cores of the people are showing now.
So much for a colorblind society. Obama, not once, has pushed his race and yet it’s an issue.
As for Obama’s church, the message preached is that African-Americans support themselves. Within that message it’s all about having a sense of pride and within that, not being a leach of the government.
Now many right(and we see now, left) wingers would say African-Americans should not be about soaking up handouts from the government but rather pull themselves up by their bootstraps, get involved in the American workforce and economy and make a way for themselves on their own. Yet when Obama’s pastor’s message is preached this is turned into an issue of the pastor preaching separatism by folk like S. Hannity.
People of color can’t be too anything but in their place it seems. If you preach self awareness and responsibility then you’re being too radical and getting ahead of yourself. If you preach turn the other cheek and be the victim it’s quit your moaning…”well regardless of what my ancestors may have done I didn’t do it so why should I have to pay or listen to their moaning?”
Pick a position and stick to it.
Do you want people of color to be self sufficient or do you want to control them and for them to stay in their place?
You can’t have it both ways. It’s time for the games to end and for a real HONEST dialog to begin. Can that really happen in Atlanta, Georgia in this progressive, culturally diverse community?
I would love for my doubts to be erased.

Haters of the world, UNITE. You only get one vote, so cast it and then turn your attention to your own communities.
Do you have public water, sewer and heat? Are there parks for your children to play? Is there a library or bookmobile accessible to every home? Do you have paved roads? Do you have streetlights and sidewalks? Do you have excellent schools administrations, parents, teachers and students where people speak English and not the vernacular (redneck, ebonics)? Is your community free of crack, meth and violence?
For any of these to be a problem in 2008, hatred and ignorance must exist. Poverty and lack of funds are just a symptom. The Civil War is over. The Civil Rights Movement has made its mark. It is time for all of us to show-up in the present. To h—- with all that other stuff!
In the words of an anonymous Italian Immigrant: “I came to America because I heard the streets were paved with gold. When I got there I found three things. First, the streets weren’t paved with gold. Second, they weren’t paved at all. Third, I was expected to pave them.”

“I will stay in Iraq for 100 years”…”I really do not know much about the economy” - both quotes of John McCain. These are two of the most important issues our country is facing today and some of you want this man for president? Now that he has flat out denied having an affair, once the smoking gun appears he will have to step down in disgrace. Remember Romney only “suspended” his campaign (are we getting the picture now) and the repubs. will hand him the nomination in a brokered convention. Obama vs Romney in a general election, I will see you at the inaugaration of the first African-American president, January 2009.
