Caucusing: A peculiar process
The Atlanta Journal-Constitution
The Iowa caucuses are the loya jirga of American politics — interminable gatherings of civically active types determined to keep talking and voting until they reach consensus.
What an odd way to pick a presidential nominee! Join me tonight as I try to make sense of this peculiar process, where anything could happen.

Thanks Cynthia,
That lengthy gathering and regrouping into the support group of another candidate when your choice is no longer viable only takes place on the Democrat side. The Republicans basically have a straw poll and go home.

Hi everybody!
I’m a hardcore Conservative and I am deeply in love with the Republican Party and it seems to me that the people who have done us the most good in recent years have been Nancy Pelosi and Harry Reid.
My question is, if I cast my vote for Hillary will she be a good little Republican too?
And if her answer is yes, how can I tell if she’s not lying, as usual?

Iowans are actively involved in the one to one with the candidates and then come together in the caucus to discuss the candidates’ strengths and weaknesses. I don’t think this is odd, rather it is a wonderfully interactive and inclusive process. No power brokers running this show. The people of Iowa are gathering their own facts and impressions, getting their own answers from the candidates and running their own caucuses. I bet that someone will create an online caucus format that the rest of us interested Americans could particapte in.

Dear Rw and Luckaduh,
I love reading and listening to the whack job far end fanatics on both sides of the political spectrum. You both spew the same nonsensical vitriol changing only the party and candidate names. your lies, baseless accusations, and vile mud slinging would be humorous if it were not so heart felt and just down right mean. It is you far end wacko’s that give us these poor candidate choices every year, a moderate (which MOST Americans are) has no chance getting past you weirdo’s in a primary. The good side is though that while your idiot candidates are so busy with their own mudslinging, lies, and attempts to backstab the other party in Washington, the end result is that in their efforts to screw each other, it leaves them little time to screw the rest of us. God forbid that either party should get a 2/3rds majority of the house and Senate AND a Presidency……….

Dearest Fred:
What did RW say that was so objectionable, pray tell?
Perhaps you should loosen your bonnet just a bit, it seems as though you are wound up awfully tight.
Why don’t you kick back, have a drink and let’s just see if the best man, er, candidate wins, eh?

Well, the wingnuts did not learn from the w disaster and will vote for another Governor with no foreign policy experience, Gomer Pyle.
Edwards has been in Iowa the longest and he should win.

getalife,
After campaigning in Iowa for six years Edwards should be on a first name basis with the entire state, except he really hates the actual people in that other America.
If he doesn’t win and win big he should go home and leave us alone.

Funny how the MSM call him angry and if he loses Iowa it is over.
Corporate media are scared of Edwards.

This whole process sounds like the dems waste time talking each other to death while the Republicans just get down to business.
Kinda reminds me of the dems in Congress—all talk, no action.

Like it or not,this is the process by which America picks its presidential nomminees.It is probably as fair,honest, and above board as anything anyone can dream up.Out of this process we get Presidents that are great, according to their party,horrible,according to the opposing party,and somewhere in between,according to history.

What a great night to be an American!
I saw that in what is being called a “key” precinct 2004 82 showed up, this year 267 are caucasing.
I have not been able to find any GOP turnout comparison numbers…..anybody see anything?
Good evening, RW and Duh, I hope we can follow the results together tonight with respect and good humor.
I really disagree with just about every thing each of you stand for, but I will fight always for your right to be wrong!

~~~~~~~~
What’s up with Tim Russert? He just said one Democrat precinct was going to be shut down for being overcrowded, but the Republicans said they were done and gave up there space. He did this to leave the impression there was very little Republican turnout, but didn’t mention that the good guys vote and leave. Very poor journalism, don’t you think Ms. Tucker?
Mrs. G,
Rudy isn’t even contesting Iowa. This truly is a whole new world this year with all the states jammed up close and all the early voting laws. They may already be voting in Florida so you don’t have that Iowa, New Hampshire domino effect anymore.
Luckoduh,
From the looks of the numbers coming in, the few sheep that aren’t in with the top three could be moved into place by one good cutting horse rider.
I have known a surly Fred but I don’t think it’s the same fellow. At least, I hope not.
I do however understand the whole surly thing. I suspect you do as well. When things don’t work out as we would like them to we get surly.
Surly to be, surly to rise. It’s human nature.
Since the Republican vote is a non-binding straw poll (think non-binding resolution) I would think you would appreciate their process more.
After all the Pelosi/Reid Congress is the all time champion of non-binding resolutions.
RW,
While laptops are a new animal for me…political reality is not.
Guiliani didn’t “contest” Iowa because he could not.
We both know smart folks pick their battles. Even smarter folks can read the writing on the wall (which is in really big read letters saying “Ba-bye Rudy”).
The only guy you got that gives me pause is John McCain. He’s too old. He’s too much of a hawk. BUT he is the GOP next in line.
I have a grudging respect for Senator McCain.
I still have not seen any hard GOP turnout numbers…..anybody?
It really is great to be an American.
Frankly if you’re going to be any better to those of us on the right side of history than you have been after taking Congress in 2006, bring it on. The Pelosi/Reid Congress has given Republicans everything they want.
Ribeye - marinated and carefully grilled.
Veal - scalopini sliced, with fresh lemon, parsley, scallions and heavy cream - gently sauteed
Chicken - organic, never frozen, free range, soaked in buttermilk, seasoned and triple breaded then fried golden with our family “give up all our national secrets” mashed potatoes
