East Cobb, what’s wrong with this sign?
The Atlanta Journal-Constitution

Cobb County has been busy putting up new road signs to point to upcoming intersections along Roswell Road. The sign at Mitsy Forest Drive has a spelling that is at odds with most of the streets in the Mitsy Forest subdivision. For another view, check the map.
Perhaps somebody in the neighborhood knows why it’s spelled Mitsy in the first place. And which sign should be corrected? Hmm?

I’ve got your answer…. This subdivision was developed by a builder named Jack Thompson in the mid to late 80s. His family grew up in Roswell and his two kids were named Whit and Mitsy Thompson. Unfortunately his son (Whit),who was a good friend, was killed in May of 1980. After his death, Mr Thompson decided to name something after his remaining daughter who was named “Mitsy”. Mr Thompson is semi retired today and lives in Forsyth County with his wife Faye. Mitsy is now married (not sure of her last name) and I believe she lives in either Cobb or North Fulton.
I hope this helps answer your question.

I have been looking at that for years and laughing. I say keep it. It’s been so long now. It adds to the neighborhood.

Let’s hear it for the Cobb dept. who is responsible for these signs. The correct spelling is Mitsy and when the county dedicated “Sope Creek” some years ago they proudly uncovered a large bronze sign proclaiming the area “Soap Creek”. That sign came down shortly. Seems the county needs a proof reader for the appropriate department.

Another overpaid, underworked government minion who can’t pay attention to details. Did this worker go to school in Clayton County?

why is these even a featured blog? yes, it’s an obvious screw-up. but it’s not just a case of changing the street sign, but the name of the street, which affects everyone’s mailing addresses as well as all maps. WHO CARES?

Our subdivision in Hall County has a street sign that reads “Serenity” on one side and “Serenty” on the other. This is the same subdivision where there are several houses on different streets that have the same number. Doesn’t take much to work in government, does it?

Thanks to Todd for the local history lesson. The first time you see the subdivision name, you do a double-take, but it makes sense that it’s named for a person.
IMO it’s a much better subdivision name than some silly invented name like Plantation Vistas or something. It gives a sense of local place.
But the new county street signs are wrong.

The correct spelling is Mitsy and when the county dedicated “Sope Creek” some years ago they proudly uncovered a large bronze sign proclaiming the area “Soap Creek”.
I thought “Soap Creek” was actually the correct spelling, but somewhere in history the spelling was changed to “Sope”. When you research Cobb County history, all of the maps and documents from the Civil War era list the spelling as “Soap Creek”. The name was due to the many bubbles created by the rapids, hence making the water look “soapy”.

UPDATE: The forces of good spelling have prevailed. When I checked the signs this evening, the new road signs had been taken down. Not replaced yet, but no longer up on posts where their spelling was visible to the whole East Cobb world.
Stay tuned.

You guys just focus on the street signs. Don’t worry about the swarm of illegals that are pumping drugs, identity theft, gangs and litter into our streets. Don’t worry about the short fat cops that continue to ignore the problem while doling out Mickey Mouse traffic tickets and flying through red lights going 65 in a 45 with no consequence. Don’t worry about the emissions scam when you have to buy your tag. Don’t worry about the anchor babies that your taxes continue to support year after year. Just focus on misspelled street signs.

This isn’t the 1st wrong sign. I remember Sandy Plains Rd was Sandy Planis Rd for years and Cobb Cty said it was to expensive to fix. It finally was fixed after a few years and many complants. Let’s see how long it takes to fix this blunder.

I have one even better! I live in Parkstone, in Cumming. ALL street names and ADDRESS numbers were APPROVED by the COUNTY prior to any CLOSINGS.
Yet, there is a 6620 Flagstone COURT and a 6620 Flagstone COVE - Mail delivery has been a nightmare, not to mention UPS, FEDEx and DHL…NO ONE can get it right. Even when it is specified NOT to deliver to Court or to Cove…
Forsyth County has reconciled this by CHANGING the Cove street name to Flagstone Mill Cove…They have yet to change the street sign and have done nothing but create further havoc.

If I’m not mistaken, Mitsy was the developer’s daughter’s name.

On Sandy Plains Road in NE Cobb there’s a sign I’m pretty sure is new, for Wesley Chapel Road. The new sign, however, reads Wesley Chappel.

Less than 1/2 mile from Mitsy Forest there is a street named Sterling Ridge Chase. The new sign now says Sterling Ridge “TRAIL”. That’s not even close. Do the people who live on that street need to change their address?

I’m still mad that the DOT decided to rename Setten Down Road in Forsyth county as Settingdown Road, which ruins the history of the area. It’s on Settendown creek, which is where ten indian chiefs supposedly sat down on the bank, had a meeting, and accepted Christianity.
