Sandy Springs mayor vows to fight billboards
The Atlanta Journal-Constitution
The city of Sandy Springs released a statement Thursday night from Mayor Eva Galambos vowing to fight the new billboards that could be built in the city as a result of a Fulton County Commission vote this week.
If you missed the story, here it is:
Fulton OKs settlement that would mean more billboards
Here is the text of the statement from Sandy Springs Mayor Eva Galambos:
“The City of Sandy Springs is adamantly opposed to 23 new billboards in our city. The elected officials of Sandy Springs were not invited and did not have input in this decision.
Citizens of Sandy Springs fought billboards when in Fulton County and do not sanction billboards now.
I find it unconscionable and egregious that the Commissioner representing Sandy Springs would vote in opposition to his constituents’ views. Mr. Lowe cast the fourth vote that gave this decision a majority vote. I can only hope that he will reconsider this vote and amend it so as to represent the people who elected him.
We will use every legal means available to fight this action.”

Ha! Just watch. The billboard companies will cram so much money down the city’s throat that they will choke, and those billboards will be popping up like mushrooms after a summmer thunderstorm.

Sandy Springs is not run- or populated- by the same types of people in the rest of Fulton County, so bribing the city of Sandy Springs will not be an issue in their decision. Sandy Springs is, virtually, being held prisoner by the greed incompetence and graft that has for so long dominated Atlanta politics. The water department- controlled by City employees, is just thick with them, not to mention the rest of that government which is nothing more than a cancerous growth that needs to be removed from the decent law-abiding, and family-oriented people Sandy Springs.

The City of Sandy Springs is owned and operated by developers- hence the ability to easily and completely remove trees from lots. Eva will run her mouth a little and then roll over and let those companies do pretty much anything they want. Every decision made by Sandy Springs has only benefited developers or the few very wealthy. Who really thinks things are going to change? Please.

Sandy Springs and other cities are not without recourse. Some thoughts: 1) Boycott any business in Sandy Springs that pays for advertising on one of these billboards.
2) Seek state legislation that bans the issuing of backdated permits. 3) Bring pressure to bear on any advertisers outside the city who might consider renting billboard space. 4) Strictly enforce all other provisions of the law related to the billboard construction, access, environmental considerations and maintenance. 5) Ensure the land on which the billboards are located are fully assessed for tax purposes at fair market value to reflect the billboard revenue potential.
Two years after Sandy Springs broke with Fulton County, the Commissioners are still reaching back from the grave with a backdated permit like some horror movie to remind us of their incompetence. What we need is Milton County and possibly a wooden stake.

Eva, maybe you should have been a Fulton County commissioner instead. You don’t officially have a say in this matter, you know. That’s what the COUNTY does, and the county doesn’t have to agree with you.

Since when does the GA constitution forbid the banning of billboards? Does this sound ridiculous to anyone else?
Billboards are clearly an eyesore and counties should be able to limit and/or ban at their discretion.

Commissioner Tom Lowe is corrupt. His house in Sandy Springs is directly across the street from greenspace that Fulton County purchased for his own pleasure

Oh Eva does not billboards, oh to dam bad, people don’t like going through her speed traps and every other fine she can access on those that have the misfortune to pass through her divine city. I hope a bill board falls on her nice lawn. No one likes bill boards but Gov Potato head and his greedy money grubbing buddies and the way Eva treats others she will soon be one of the buddies, oops men only.

Companies have a right to advertise. We need to allow all businesses including nude bars the right to advertise their wares.

Sandy is right about one thing…Sandy Springs does look like a “glorified interestion” to most people who pass through it on Roswell Rd. Precisely the reason Mr. Lowe’s vote is an unfortunate setback for its residents.
Thank you to Mr. Lowe for making it just a little more difficult for those of us who would like to improve our City.

We the people don’t want those ugly billboards in this area (Sandy Springs, Alpharetta & Johns Creek) why ruin a nice area. They serve no purpose, some parts of Atlanta look run down and cheep with billboards popping up all over, to commerical looking and degrading, these are nice middle to high income areas in the suurburbs (country settings)let alone properaty values decreasing. I’d like to know how much mony or graff Tom Lowe put in his pocket?

Sandy Springs Government doesnt want ANYTHING in thier city. No billboards, no businesses (they are all being bulldozed for residential), no bars or restaurants (how many have we lost?), no traffic - how are the business that do remain on roswell road supposed to profit if you time the lights in an unfavorable manner???? EVA, you ran for mayor of a CITY, and I stress the word CITY. You are not the president of a Home Owners Association. It is not your job to tell someone they cant paint thier house green. Stop thinking only of the “retirees” that want nothing but million dollar houses and antique shops in Sandy Springs. Start thinkin about the average citizens, whose interests YOU are supposed to represent, whose lives you are making miserable. You are taking revenue the city needs and flushing it down the toilet!!!! You are taking away our homes, our businesses, our jobs!!! You should go live on a farm in the North Georgia Mountains so you can have things exaclty the way you want them, leave the running of our CITY to someone who has concern for the interest of all of its citizens, not just the “elders.”
