Are you better off than you were two years ago?

It seems hard to believe that Sandy Springs is already two years old. And the new kids on the block, Milton and Johns Creek, turn 1 on Saturday.

What are your thoughts on this second anniversary of the experiment in local government that is the city of Sandy Springs? Is the city living up to its promise of good customer service. Are the leaders focusing on the right things? What would you like them to do going into 2008?

While you’re thinking, here’s a snapshot of the city’s accomplishments since it went into business in 2005.

By far, the best department in SS is the police department. The biggest disappointment is the failure of elected officials to follow through on their election promises. We were going to get rid of overcrowded apartments that are centers of crime. Also, they have lowered the quality of the public schools. Moving to a single family home in SS and sending their children to public schools is not an option for many people based on comments from real estate agents.

I think that with the exception of the Police Department, the new city has been a hugh disappointment. With one exception, the city council and mayor have disregarded citizen input, especially on zoning and tree ordinance issues and have routinely favored commercial and residential development. time and time again, we’ve seen public concerns trumped by the city government and the lone voice of conservative interests largely ignored. The famous Tree Ordinance, weak at best is routinely ignored and public comment on reversal of a major rezoning issue has been quashed by the city attorney. Time for a recall of this damaged city government.

I have to agree. Sandy Springs is run for the benefit of developers and businesses. Citizens have no say. We can’t even get our water secured and our streets repaired in a timely fashion.

I do believe we are better off for police protection, but that’s the only improvement I can see among numerous problems over the past 2 years.
