What’s the use of Fulton County now?

Should Fulton County survive? If so, what will it look like? With most of the county now incorporated, what should the county do? In the next few weeks, 16 people will begin answering those questions.

In the wake of the incorporation of four new cities — Sandy Springs, Johns Creek, Milton and Chattahoochee Hill Country — the group must tackle a variety of issues, such as looking at what services should be provided by the county and whether the county’s form of government should be changed.

It won’t be easy.

Because of the new cities, the county has lost tens of millions of dollars in tax money. It’s already had to cut employees and restructure operations.

For the county, things could get worse next September, if voters decide to form yet another new city, called South Fulton.

Enter the committee, which was created through the Georgia General Assembly. It plans to meet several times during the summer and fall before making recommendations to legislators by year’s end.

The group’s recommendations could become law in 2008.

Take a look at the issues

Fulton County should be split into two, with Milton County in the North, and both counties should be providers of secondary services only. Court- sheriff - jail - health department - court and records clerks - water and sewer - those types of services. Let the cities provide the true local government. That’s the way its done in many other states and it works well.

If there were ever a dysfunctional, wasteful, incompetent, and now racist (remember the Eaves ad threatening attack dogs and fire hoses)county government, even a blind man could see Fulton is at the top. Show me ONE Department that functions at an acceptable level Fulton—Jail, Assessments, Tax Collections, health services (GRADY?!?), park services, transportation (MARTA!?!) and within the norms of costs of other counties—afraid not!!. This county needs to be dismantled, obligations commuted, and brought closer to the taxpayers.

If Fulton goes away, how will Emma Darnell build/name more old folks homes for family members at taxpayer’s expense?

Just thought of someting… If Milton County is formed, I will never have to sit thru another week of jury duty convicting a murderer from the City of Atlanta. Or have to pay more money for parking than I get per day for serving on the jury. Or have to navigate thru the homeless nutcases asking me for money. Or get my wallet taken from me at the point of a knife. Or….
