Update on renaming Roswell Road
The Atlanta Journal-Constitution

A question on the city’s Web site asking residents to suggest new names for Sandy Springs’ main drag (Roswell Road) has started garnering some attention.
Residents have added “Sandy Springs Parkway,” “Sandy Springs Drive,” “Spring Weather Road,” “Terrapin Road,” and “Galambos Avenue” to the already-posed suggestions of “Sandy Springs Boulevard” and “Main Street.”
At their work session, a few weeks ago, the Sandy Springs City Council asked for residents’ suggestions in whether they would want to see Roswell Road renamed in hopes of jump starting an upgrade to the entire corridor.
When NorthSide.Talk asked this question, 70 percent of you said you wanted Roswell Road to keep its name.
You can voice your opinon to the city. But first, let NorthSide.Talk know one thing: are these suggestions moving in the right direction?

Call it “Red Herring Way”
Come on Eva, do some real work. If you’re not up to the task of being mayor rather than playing mayor, resign and let someone with the required skills take over.

DO NOT RENAME ROSWELL ROAD. This is a stupid idea. Changing the name won’t fix anything. Do something about the horrible timing of the lights, the horrible traffic, the jaywalkers in the turn lane and the shopping centers with the awful flow of traffic onto and off of Roswell Road.

Sandy Springs needs better lights and better traffic improvements, not a stupid road name change. this is not a tea party you old bat, this is a Government-now run it or get someone that can!

Oh boy, here we go again. Did you not read the posts from the previous forum? To sum them up: the name change idea is stupid and unneccessary. Get to work on making Sandy Springs liveable. I’m already embarrassed that I spent 500K on a home here!!

Asking for ideas on how to make Roswell Road more attractive was the topic at hand at a Council of Neighborhoods meeting this week. Changing the name of Roswell Road was not discussed. If the look and feel of Highway 9/ Roswell Road is altered through development, then no one will care to change the name.
Do you think that Buford Highway would be nicer if its name was changed to Prosperity Road?
The anti-Sandy Springs comments seem to come from a vocal minority. People within my neighborhood LOVE the things that the city is doing.

I agree, living part of my year in Sandy Springs, driving through the city is unpleasant. There are many poorly designed parking lots, and the fact that a lot of Roswell Road runs through land with a lot of elevation change, it tends to get very backed up. On the other hand, the reason for the name change is not just to help in the beautification of Roswell road, but also to create more of a sense of community.
Being a student and part of the youth of this country, I think community is extremely important. I am also entirely for the renaming of Roswell Road, and it is sort of immature that the simple changing of a name and a few dollars spent of road signs would bother so many people who probably have more important things to be doing than a college kid on his summer vacation.
If for one minute you think that the government of Sandy Springs would be focusing more of its time and energy on changing road signs, and ignoring inherant problems such as the hanous traffic on city roads, then you are dead wrong.

Leave it as Roswell Road. Put the money to better use. They are already making great changes along the road. I’ve seen several once crime-ridden apartment complexes turned into condominiums or bulldozed. (Of course, they need to make sure when they do that they help the good people that live in them find new places to live.) But changing the name is ridiculous. Just put a Sandy Springs sign on top of each street sign (like Dunwoody does) and that will create the sense of Community. When I think of Roswell Road I think of Sandy Springs, not of a bad area.

I just wish they would take roads that change names several times over their length and decide on one name.

The last time I looked, Roswell Road still goes to Roswell! There have been enough hitoric names of Atlanta area streets changed just because someone thought it would sound better, be “newer”,honor someone else more important, etc. I’ve been a resident of Sandy Springs for 44 years and changing the name won’t solve the issues of traffic, ill conceived development, etc. that really need to be addressed. I think that the urban blight along the road just south of I285 on the east side needs a clean up/redevelopment; get rid of the Coronet Club, Flashers, etc and encourage more restaurants like Chicago’s, Longhorn, and the like.

Hey Marc Fellerman, college doesn’t teach you much does it? Like spelling: hanous = heinous.
Anyway, this road name change is unnecessary and expensive. Road signs aren’t cheap and the money and time involved is better spent on other items. I’m still surprised why we’re even talking about this while traffic lights don’t function properly and the Roswell Road & 285 interchange is getting worse every day.

I think renaming Roswell Road is an unnecessary expense, especially when there are other things where that money could be better spent. Everyone knows the main North / South drag in Sandy Springs as Roswell Road, why change?

Sandy Springs is a fantastic area to live in. Roswell Road has been a blight for too many years…once our city “fixes” all the problems that Fulton County brought to us so (roads, lights, etc..)it would be great to rename our stretch of the road to one that represents our pride in our great city. Not to continually be demoralized by others who do not live here or understand what we’re going thru. If you don’t like Sandy Springs or our stretch of Roswell Road….quit using it as a cut-through on your way up to East Cobb!!!

Why does Atlanta have a fascination with changing a road name just for the heck of it. I’ve grown up here and I don’t understand it. I drive about 10 miles to work and the road I drive on changes names 4 times before I get to work. Roswell Road already changes to Atlanta Street at the Chattahoochee and then to Canton Street in Roswell and then to Crabapple Road north of Canton. It’s just stupid. Now you idiots think it’s a good idea to change it AGAIN? Go to hell.
