May Day in Milton means a new police department
The Atlanta Journal-Constitution
The first of May in Milton will be the birthday for the new city’s new police department.
What would you like the police to focus on in their first few weeks. What questions do you have about the new department?

While I am respectful for any individual who holds a badge, be it fire or police, I am bothered that few veteran North Fulton officers were hired. Money can’t be the issue provided the “surplus” that Rep Jones professed was true. What really happened here? When an emergency strikes, seconds matter and the veterans know our streets in and out. While I am sure that our new Milton Police staff will learn them in due time; what about the here and now?
I would like to see the severe speeding that Milton neighborhoods, both open-road and subdivision, experience on a daily basis. It is my hope that Mr. Lagerbloom & staff focuses their efforts on this terrible problem. There is no reason for someone to be going by my house on Bethany at 65mph.
I do want to welcome those who will be keeping my family safe, however, and relay my thanks for their service to our City. Keep safe out there!

Veteran Fulton officers? Have you ever thought that there may not have been a good supply of ‘good’ officers from the county that had the attitude and clear record that was desired? Just because it was part of Fulton county does not mean that the old ways and ideas needed to be present upon rolling out onto the streets. A fresh look may be what is needed to be a ‘NEW’ department with ‘NEW’ ideas.

Dave:
As stated, I hold respect for ALL FIRE AND POLICE; not just veterans.
I am well versed in regards to what was offered to would be Milton Officers and it was not on par with what veteran are making with the county. I am also not asking for 100% veterans nor am I asking for 100% new folk. I am simply saying that when the poop hits the fan, you want some of these individuals to know the roads backwards and forwards as well as know the job in and out. Launching a force with the overwhelming majority not being as familiar with the area veterans is problematic at best.
I am sure you would agree that when an emergency strikes, seconds are as valueable as hours. Possible inexperience in any position is simply not affordable.
By the way, if you are a new Milton Officer, I thank you for keeping my family safe. I have no doubt I nor the majority of citizens realize what folks in your position have to deal with in this job.
In closing, just remember that after you put 15 years into a job, hope that the powers that be realize it and pay you accordingly instead of showing you the door.
Keep safe -

I appreciate the need for Public Safety and the officers who put themselves in different difficult position everyday, but…this is more of a note about the Mayor and Council.
Can someone enlighten us (the people of Milton) as to how many patrol cars were in the Milton area prior to May 1, 2007? Also, could anyone shed any light on the crime statistics for the same area?
Reason being…I suspect we were patrolled by 3 or 4 Fulton County patrol units at any given time. As for the prior crime rate (speeding, mail theft and the underage alcohol consumption) I am sure it is/was pretty low.
With all this said, has the crime rate risen so much that the City of Milton (Mayor and Council) were justified in purchasing 27 or 28 Police cars (some unmarked) at the tune of $700,000+?
Did the crime rate really jump that drastically since December 2006?
Not to mention, they were fiscally irresponsible and leased.
I would love to hear any kind of defense or rationale of the abuse of the dollars we were going to “keep” in our area by becoming Milton. I have spoken with many of the people who have been around the Milton area longer than the folks on the Council have lived in the State of GA and we are all DISSAPOINTED.

I am not a Milton officer but an officer that left a bad department to work for a great new one. I have a map book and good officers to help if I need it BUT it only took me 1 week to learna bigger area than Milton. Your new officers have it under control. I guarantee it.
The above paste from your other post is surprising. If they have 15 years they can still work for Fulton, no one has gotten fired yet just because they didn’t get hired with Milton.

Daver:
Well said. I was just hoping to get some of the officers who had worked the area for a while. Having lost half my family to various tragedies, I am VERY protective of those I have left. Just don’t want any possible errors due to folks being new to our roads. As stated, however, I hold the utmost respect for all officers and firemen. In my view, you folks are severly underpaid and under appreciated. Keep safe out there!

Well let’s see. They have 21 officers. That means they need the proper patrol cars to patrol in?? Guess I don’t understand your concern.

Daver, if you don’t understand the concern, then you are part of the new problem. The concern is that Milton has just spent $700k to patrol an area that just previously cost somewhere (speculating; hence the request for the info) around $85k to $100k.
Your logic is like to old joke “how can I be out of money, I still have checks” Hmmmmm, we have 21 officers, therefore we should have 27-28 cars. How about 12 officers? Or are we scheduled to see a crime wave 7x’s greater than our current rate?

Tim Enloe has a lot of nerve. He is nothing more than an unsuccessful candidate for City Council who now feels like he has to criticize and Monday-morning quarterback every move the City makes. He blogs on this site and on his own as if he has some inside knowledge or authority. The truth is he doesn’t, nor does he have any background on the subject of public safety. He even walked out of last week’s City Council meeting before the briefing to the Council by the public safety director on the mobilization. He would have learned something about the subject if he’d stayed. He probably doesn’t want to hear the truth because then he won’t have anything to criticize.
The truth is, the City mobilized police and fire this fast because it couldn’t afford to keep paying the County the exhorbitant rates that it was being charged for police and fire, especially when the County was not living up to its promises for minimum manning. Milton is doing it less expensively and with better coverage. It was the most fiscally prudent way to provide the needed service for taxpayer dollars.

To “One who Knows”:
First off, you are a COWARD. Posting comments on a blog without putting your real name shows your FEAR of those you choose to question. Grow up.
Second, while I have never professed to have “inside knowledge or authority”, I am well versed regarding the service that our North Fulton Fire and Police provided to us over the years. They kept my and many other families safe. To not offer a compensation plan on an equal playing field is easily questioned.
In regards to your claim that I supposedly “criticize and Monday-morning quarterback”, I ask you, COWARD, to show me where I have critized any fire or police officers. You won’t find it. I even took the small amount of donations I recieved during my “failed” campaign and purchased three dvd-vcrs for the Milton Fire & Police. Ask Chad and Jan about it and they will confirm this as true. What did you do? Nothing, I bet.
In regards to my leaving a meeting early, it was due to my having to be up early for a business meeting. There was no “I don’t want to here what they have to say” mindset. Much like I have proven in times past, I stay as late as I can. I will continue to be huge advocates of Fire and Police; both locally and across this country.
Having lost half my family to tragedies, I was and still am concerned about these new folks knowing the roads if an emergency strikes. This is NOTHING against them even though you try and paint it as such. I also question not these folks, but the claim that the city would have a surplus upon incorporation. If that were the case, then the city could have afforded to hire more than two veteran Police Officers. Then again, they should have been able to offer those they hired more.
In closing, stop HIDING behind a computer screen. If you have issue with me, the contact me. You obviously know who I am. Otherwise, continue to HIDE in corner. You are obviously quite good at it.
All the best -
