Should Sandy Springs rename Roswell Road?
The Atlanta Journal-Constitution
Sandy Springs officials may not be able to fix Roswell Road but they want to give it a new name.
“We’re trying to get the whole Roswell Road corridor upgraded,” Sandy Springs Mayor Eva Galambos said. “So, why not upgrade the name?”
At Tuesday night’s City Council meeting, officials threw out a few suggestions
- Roswell Boulevard (so businessowners wouldn’t need all new stationery)
- Sandy Springs Boulevard (to eliminate “Roswell” completely)
- Main Street
But even officials understand that a name change won’t get rid of the corridor’s clogged traffic or the big box stores
“You can’t just change the name—everything else must come with it,” she said.
So, should Sandy Springs re-name their signature corridor? Do you have suggestions?

They can change the name, but everyone will still always call it Roswell Road… so i don’t think there’s any point in changing it. I vote keep it the same

Sandy Springs Boulevard would be confused with Sandy Springs Circle. I like Roswell-Buckhead Rd. This tells where it goes.

One of my pet peeves is the trend to rename every road, especially when they rename it after a person. I hate that. I think there should be a law, we do not name a road, bridge, building, or any other public property after a person unless that person has been dead for 50 years.
We had a state representative from our small, semi-rural hometown who had a pathological desire to get his name plastered on everything. It’s a running joke around here.
Years ago, when common sense prevailed, people named highways based on where they went. If the highway went to Alabama, we called it the Alabama highway. If it went to Atlanta, we called it the Atlanta highway. Our city streets were named Oak, Elm, College, Main, Broad, etc, etc.
Today, one of the highways I frequent changes name five times within 30 miles. Yep, five different politicians got their name on that one.
Give me a break…….

Yea, yea. Change the name just like the airport. It will always be Roswell Road and it will always be the Atlanta Airport.

Auction it off by sections to give everyone a chance and raise a little money. You could also sell a lot of maps to people trying to figure out where in the world they are

Roads here follow the old British naming convention of telling which town/village the road leads to. This road happens to go to Roswell; hence the name Roswell Road. Leave the name alone. Focus on fixing the problem; not on meaningless bandaides that don’t fix anything.

Life must be good that this is a topic in the paper! It is Roswell Road and always will be Roswell Road…Leave it alone! It’s also US19 which it will always be.

gimme a break, lets not make the crappy atl traffic and road system any more difficult than it already is. Georgia is the only state that Ive driven in where the road will just change names for no apparent reason, not to mention the 1000 Peachtree’s. Gimme a break, don’t our government officials have something else to do?

I’m NOT a fan of constant, or even infrequent, road name changes. It serves as nothing but a point of confusion…especially when a native is giving directions to someone unfamiliar with the area. The natives still use the old name, and a newbie can’t find whatever road they’re talking about.
I do have a question about the comments on naming a road based on where it leads. Okay, Roswell Road makes sense since it leads to Roswell, but what about if you’re IN Roswell? Is it named Roswell Road on the northbound side and Atlanta Road on the southbound side?

We don’t need to be constantly renaming roads. Aren’t there more important things for politicians to worry about? How about REPAVING Roswell Road and making it better to actually TRAVEL on — who cares about the name.

Why is the name being change? Is it because of crime in the area.. It is the people that are being put in the apartments along Roswell Rd… That is what bring The Name Of Roswell Rd Down. Ihave being living on Roswell Rd since 1994 And it has change a whole lot.. CLEAN UP THE APARTMENT COMPLEX.. THAT WILL MAKE A BIG DIFFERENT..

I have lived in Sandy Springs since the 6th grade, 46 years, in the Meadowbrook Subdivision off Roswell Road. I went to North Springs High School on Roswell Road. I shop on Roswell Road. Make changes to circumstances and the surroundings of Roswell Road but the “corridor” as you call it, is the passageway from which it got its name. The road from Buckhead to Roswell, GA.

Leave it alone! For Pete’s sake, the Sandy Springs government should be doing something more important then changing the name of a street! I admit it is a bit confusing to tell someone in Marietta to go down Roswell Rd., take a right on Johnson Ferry and go until that road ends at Roswell Rd. OH, that is after it crosses Lower Roswell Rd. but it’s no more confusing than any other place I have lived. Seatle and Miami are very big on numbered Sts. Rds,. Circles, Cts., etc. but that is boring and confusing!

Apparently all of that extra tax money is going to good use, on unneccesary road signs and probably a committee to study the affect of the changes of a road name. Keep up the good work Sandy Springs government officials!
Maybe next month y’all can focus on how to attract more low income housing and gang hangouts to your “new” road.

Born and raised in Sandy Springs. Change names all you want, it will still be called what everyone KNEW it as. Perfect example in Sandy Springs. A road that runs parallel to 285 just inside has had a new name for years. For the life of me, I don’t know it, but when I say Copeland Road, everyone knows what I a talking about. Changing the name of that road didn’t solve the drugs and crime problem in the area.

Here we go again. This is about as ridiculous as the idiots that John Weiland convinced to pay 400K+ to build a house off of the former Bankhead Highway and calling it Vinings. It’s still Bankhead Highway (but not Vinings!), but now there are actual people with no brain who spent half a million to live there. I can’t wait to see the look on their faces when the Bankhead community starts to spread into their backyards.

The State of Georgia should learn from Virginia on how to build, repair & maintain road SYSTEMS, rather than being creative about all of this. Hey Georgia, REPAVE your roads using DOT approved white/yellow lines & markings.

I agree Bob K. Parking lot it is. I lived in a townhome off Roswell Road about five years ago and as crazy as it sounds, I compare Roswell Road’s traffic to that of the Big Northern 3 interstates. It’s THAT bad! Except for location to Atlanta, I also didn’t see anything worth the cost of living there. It has it’s issues too and changing the name should not be a priority.

What can you expect from a city that is ran by a bunch of hillbillies which resides in a state governed by a crafty monkey who has mastered the art of juggling. I am from Tempe, Arizona (metro Phoenix) and 90% of our street names remain the same even after crossing jurisdictions. The constant name changing just points to a bigger problem. Monkies and hillbillies (M&H’s) have no business running government. There are very few smooth and well maintained roads in the Atlanta area (that east-west connector is kind of snappy though) but yet the M&H’s would rather focus on name changing. Stop using straw to pick your teeth and pick a contractor to pave Roswell Road.

If they can rename Hartsfield Airport to Hartsfield-Jackson Airport, I wouldn’t put it past them to rename Roswell Road to something just as asinine.
As for my choice, I would name it Thrashers Way.

To Shane Turner (and you too, Allexx): I do not think keeping SS white is a good idea, because lots of white people commit crimes and other bad acts. I think keeping (or making) SS law-abiding would be much much better. People of all races, ethnicities, and religions will be excellent citizens if they obey all the laws!

Alright; I’ll admit that it’s confusing that we have two (or maybe more) Roswell Roads in the ATL metro. But c’mon…renaming it won’t change ANYTHING. Roswell Road will stick just like Bankhead Highway stuck. No one even knows the new name…So why spend the tax money on signs, etc?!

There has not been a single street named after Mrs. Coretta Scott King yet. She was the architect behind the King Center which has drawn billions of dollars into the metro Atlanta economy, including that of Sandy Springs. What an honor it would be to name one of the busiest streets in metro Atlanta after a woman who endured much and after came even more.

I vote to leave the road as is….instead of thinking of something new to do (just for the sake of doing something new) why don’t the city concentrate on fixing up the road. There are way too many bumps in the road. Especially going towards the Buckhead area!!Also, why is race a factor? Please people let’s be mature and stop being egocentric about race!!!

When city councils start on spurious name changes it’s a sure sign they don’t have enough to do! They should devotd their engergy to fixing the potholes in Sandy Springs - that way they will know ALL the street names and will know where they are when next one reports a maintenance issue!

Another change? No. We already have 2 major Roswell Roads that I know of. Go to the city of Roswell and you’ll find streets that change names 3 times every 1/2 mile! Does Peachtree St. sound familiar? Try to find it if not from here!
