Bowden’s return to FSU good news for GT fans
The Atlanta Journal-Constitution
If anybody wants to coach forever, they should. So, if Bobby Bowden wants to coach forever, he should.
Nobody should retire. I mean, if somebody wants to keep hiring you, and if you want to keep working for that person at whatever price they are willing to pay, then so be it.
That’s the American Way.
Here’s my point: The bosses at Florida State just agreed to bring the owner of more career victories in college football than anybody not named Joe Paterno back for a 34th year to coach their team. Bowden will turn 80 during the middle of the upcoming season. That means Florida State is bucking the trend throughout the college and professional game of hiring coaches less than half of Bowden’s age.
Is this Bowden move a wise one for the Seminole Nation?
Well, no. Not unless you’re into the combination of sentimentality and mediocrity.
Florida State hasn’t been a top 20 program since 2004. In fact, prior to the Seminoles’ 9-4 finish last season, they hadn’t won more than eight games during any of their previous three years. Their dip to where they are now came after a wonderful stretch from the late 1980s through earlier this century when they always ranked among the elite of the elite.
It happens: The game has sprinted past Bowden, and it has shown. But Bowden wants to keep coaching, and Florida State wants to keep bringing him back.
Good for them.
It’s also good for Georgia Tech and the rest of the rising contenders in the ACC.

Shoot, it looks like Paterno and Bowden are embroiled in, literally, a struggle to the death for most football wins. One can imagine a scenario that should either of them die shortly a day or so before a game, they would hold the wake on the sidelines to get him credit for the win.

We’ll see how long FSU wants to keep Bowden. The NCAA will soon announce it’s penalties on the FSU program. It will not be a pretty sight for FSU fans.

The man’s still 100 times better at his job than you are at yours Terrence. Fact is, he’s a great guy, done more for the FSU program than anyone else may ever do and shucks, he may even pull off a Paterno like season this year. Wasn’t too long ago that folks in the Big Ten thought Joe Pa had seen his last Rose Bowl. You never know and usually Terrence never does know.

We will see. T. Moore obviously hasn’t done enough research to know that the reigns have been turned over to Jimbo Fisher to bring the program back. As for Tech, call me when they actually do something substantial.

In case you haven’t noticed, Fla St. and especially it’s recruiting has been on the decline ever since Coach Mark Richt left town. Don’t think it’s lack of coaching ability by Bowden just not getting the recruit’s he’s used to. Urban Meyer has a lot to do with that also.

JoePa holds the record and will continue to regardless of how long Saint Bobby coaches. Winningest Division I coach should only count Division I wins. Not counting Bobby’s non-D I wins puts JoePa far ahead.

FSU is through, Bowden should retire, and have one of his many son’s appointed as the next coach…

The dip corresponds to the loss of Richt, beginning with the game in which he had already been hired as UGA’s coach.

2009 will be Bowden’s last year as Seminole head coach. Why? Because FSU will have to pay Jimbo Fisher $4M if he is not head coach by 2010 (not a lot of people are aware of this but it is written in Fisher’s contract). So, the way I see it is that FSU will win the ACC championship in 2009 and Bobby will go out a champion! Go Noles!!

Bowden is nothing but a figure head out there on the sidelines. He doesn’t call any plays and looks lost half the time pacing up and down the field. He’s a length away from being spoon fed pea soup and playing gin in a home.

Hey Bill, what do you know that no one else does? I am an FSU graduate and definitley think Bowden needs to go. But we never get in trouble with the NCAA b/c we take care of everything in house. The penalties we impose are much more harsh than the NCAA would give us.

Not so sure why GT fans should be thrilled. If not for an unforseen fumble into the endzone, GT still wouldn’t have EVER beaten FSU.

If senile old Bobby Cox can stick around forever on a lifetime pass, so can Bobby Bowden and Joe Pa.

I also just want to see Bowden beat out Paterno in the end. Also I believe that if there’s a statue of you at the stadium you should be able to keep coming back as long as you want. 9 wins ain’t bad, and Bowden still has the will to coach and the commitment to his school that he has had since he started. It’d be a travesty of Paterno, Bowden etc. were forced out or fired after all they’ve put into the programs.

Bowden or not, that was a pretty good team they trotted out last year that should be even better this year considering the youth of that team. Yeah they started a bunch of freshmen on the O-line but I didn’t hear them belly aching about it like the folks over in Athens did. Of course TECH lost both starting tackles, started 2 freshmen and a sophomore (that was a TE last year) up front and that didn’t get much press either b/c of all the wining coming from the cesspool. Old Bowden used to be involved but now he rarely even puts the head set on. To be honest the Criminoles could lose every game and that would be fine with me.

Dear Penn State fan Your continuous D-1 dribble is old. NCAA record books only go back so far with divisions, so Bobby’s victories count whether you like it or not. As long as Joe Pa continues to coach games from the press box, and not going to the locker room for pre-game or half time speaches, should his games not count either?

2009 is Bowden’s last year. Jimbo will be in charge after that. Bowden mainly needs to focus on stockpiling talent for Jimbo to work with.

Terrence I’m not sure I buy in to what you have written. It’s possible that Coach Bowden has a significant impact on running this football program. I would submit that he is just a figure head and has NO impact in day to day team operations. I can assure you of this, Florida State has not stood still, they have had to regroup and find themselves recruiting wise. This past year is a confirmation that they are in deed on track in a very competitive business. I can see Florida State back in the mix for league championships and BCS bowls in the very near future.

I’m glad fsu is keeping this old geezer around, riding golf carts and doing no coaching. Tech will be able to grab a bunch of a recruits that a real coach at fsu might get. Great news!!! Keep him around until he’s 95!

Keep dreaming Matt.FSU sent two reports with penalties that were self imposed penaties. The NCAA accepted niether.
If the NCAA was happy with what FSU self imposed, why are they waiting to issue their findings?I’m hearing 3-5 scollies per year for 3 years plus vacting wins that the players that cheated played in.

I really think Paterno’s wins when he’s “coaching” from the press box shouldn’t count. Both of these guys need to retire before the inevitable sideline tragedy happens.

Terence:
We shall assume that you use this same argument to justify your continued employment with AJC. After all, no professional publication with high standards for opinion and composition would employ someone so lacking in both respects. I would use the term “mediocrity” towards your work, but that’s giving you much too much credit.
Seriously, every one of your articles is yet another assembly of the same trite phrases: “Cy Glavine/Maddux/Smoltz; sprinting into; someone not named; he/they blew it; courtesy of; sooner rather than later; that thing; etc.”.
Have you no pride nor imagination? Has the AJC no standards? Clearly not.

I have alot of respect for GTech, but very little for Mr. Moore after this rediculous article. Honestly, FSU has accomplished light years more than GTech(no offense) in less than half the amount of time. I bet when coach Bowden comes to Dalton or Valdosta in the next couple of weeks that you’d be drooling to get a chance to interview him. And I bet that you wouldn’t have the same approach as this article to the conversation.

You mean they actually pay you for this??????
Name one coach not named Paterno that has accomplished more than Bowden. As far as the last few years, college football is cyclical. If you had a clue, you would know that. What had USC or Oklahoma or Texas, etc….. done in the decade of the 90s?

Daniel#12,
When Bowden coached at Samford they were D-1 so those wins should count.
